Series IIProfessional Papers and Photographs

2 legal-sized manuscript boxes (1 cubic ft.)6 photo boxes (1.5 cubic ft.)

Series II: Professional Papers and Photographs contain printed and manuscript material, artwork, and photographs produced or collected by George Owen. The MIT MuseumGeneral Collections has several files of photographs, articles and biographical materialrelated to Owen’s MIT years (1915-1941) that are not represented below. For access tothose items, please refer to the “General Collections” page (under “Research andCollections”) of the MIT Museum’s web site.

The first portion of Series II consists of two manuscript boxes holding 72 folders ofpapers dating from 1903 to 1968, and four pieces of artwork. Almost all of this material, including correspondence, clippings, specifications, vessel data books, and other designinformation, was produced or collected by Owen during his career. Segments of this seriesrepresent later donations and are not formally part of the Owen Collection. For example,a significant addition to the collection was made in 1999, when Chris Morehouse (Owen’sgreat grandson) donated papers and photographs that had been retained by his family.Subsequent donations are identified by accession/object numbers beginning with a year, rather than the prefix GO.

The second portion of Series II consists of approximately 725 photographs dating from1889 to 1957, with copies of older photographs from the 1860s and 1880s. Photographsof Owen-designed vessels comprise the bulk of the series, but another significant group ofphotographs demonstrates Owen’s interest in the work of other yacht designers. Manyof the early photographs were taken by Owen, which suggests that he developed his life-long photography hobby at a young age. The first Morehouse donation provided asupplement of 39 additional photos. A listing of photographs follows the list of papers.

Note on OrderThe printed and manuscript material was assembled from various museum files andorganized by the project archivist. The original order was not known. Therefore, theproject archivist grouped material by subject and created descriptive folder titles. Folderson specific Owen-designed vessels and named vessels are filed first, then correspondence, then subject files. The Morehouse donation is filed at the end.

Each folder has a unique object number, such as GO.2.56. “GO” indicates that it is part ofthe George Owen Collection, “2” indicates that it is part of Series II, and the subpoint, inthis case “56,” indicates a specific folder. An additional subpoint, such as GO.1.56.1,indicates that the material in the folder is a photocopy. As a separate donation, theMorehouse material has object numbers starting with 2000.003, to show that they are

Series II: Professional Papers and Photographs 2

part of the third gift to the MIT Museum in fiscal year 2000. Again, subpoints indicatespecific folders.

Note on Photograph OrderThe arrangement of Owen’s photographs are by his design numbers, and all of thephotographs relating to a specific design are filed together. Photographs of non-Owenvessels are arranged alphabetically by vessel name.

Each photograph has a unique object number, such as GO.2.65. “GO” indicates that it ispart of the George Owen Collection, “2” indicates that it is part of series II, and thesubpoint, in this case “65,” indicates a specific photograph. An additional subpoint, suchas GO.1.65.1, indicates that the photograph is a copy or duplicate of another photograph.Since they were donated separately, the photographs given by Chris Morehouse haveobject numbers starting with 2000.003. Again, subpoints indicate specific photos.

The photographs in Series II are arranged in five subseries:• Morehouse donation• Owen vessels• Non-Owen vessels• People• Objects

MicrofilmAll of the printed and manuscript material was microfilmed, on reel #GEOO.2.1R. Thephotographs were not microfilmed. An appointment must be made to view microfilm.

Photograph List

The list of George Owen’s photographs from Series II was created from the largerprimary Owen database (see Appendix A in Introduction and Owen Design List PDFfile). Seven fields were selected for reporting and are sorted alphabetically by the photosubject field (numbers sort before letters).

Explanation of FieldsObject # = Object number of the photo, created by the project archivist. Each photo has aunique object number. Photos that are subpointed, such as GO.2.65.1, are copies orduplicates of original photos.

Box # = Location of photograph.

Photo Date = Date when the photograph was taken, if known, entered in year/month/dayformat. If the date was unknown, three dashes were entered.

Photo Subject = Description of the photograph subject, by the project archivist. Namesof vessels are in caps.

Caption = Caption written on the photo, usually by Owen. Over the years, many otherpeople have written on the photos. Their identities and the sources of their informationare usually unknown. In many cases, long captions are edited and shortened in order to fitinto the database. Therefore, additional information may be present on the photographs. If a photo has no caption, three dashes are entered in this field.

Photographer = Photographer’s name if known.

Des. # = Owen’s design number for the vessel featured in the photo. If his design numberis unknown, the field is blank. When a vessel or object was designed by someone else, three dashes are entered in this field to indicate that it is not Owen’s.
