Vertical CNC LathesCNC Turning Centers
■Two-axis CNC turning lathe.
■Compared with our previous model, thismachine is improved significantly (byabout 20%) in terms of basicperformance characteristics such as themaximum turning diameter, the maximum table torque, the maximum table speed, and the maximum cutting capability. Themachine also ensures high rigidity, high-speed operation, and high accuracy.
■Three-axis CNC turning center.
■Milling and C-axial table indexing areadded to the OMega-M machinefunctions based on turning capabilities. These added functions allow a widerrange of machining applications andimplements the integration of machiningprocesses.
■An optional fully enclosed chip cover
and an optional internal conveyor
scheme are employed. Thus, the
scattaring of chips and coolant is
prevented for minimum environmental
pollution (described on a later page).
■Semi-dry cutting for reduced coolant
consumption can also be achieved
using an optional heat-of-vaporization
cooling system (described on a later
page).

Energy-Saving Measures
■These machines are provided with
numerous energy-saving measures,
including: hardware-related measures
such as the adoption of a liquid-
crystal display unit and an inverter-
controlled hydraulic unit, and
software-like measures such as
automatic lamp-off, automatic screen
off, and automatic spindle fan motor
stopping functions.

Table
Instead of standard independant four-jaw chuck table, various optional chuck tables are available to meet different workpiece
machining requirements. All tables are of a highly rigid design with sufficient thickness.
Column
Column for absorbing all dynamic loads
transmitted through crossrail are required
to be highly rigid. The box-construction
high-grade cast iron column used in every
model of the OMega(-M) Series has high
rigidity to ensure sufficient strength.
(OMega100・120: fabricated steel).

Table Bed and Table Drive
The table bed is made of high-grade cast
iron having a sufficient thickness.
To ensure smooth rotation and continued
high rotational accuracy, the table has
the optimal bearing structure in which
adequately preloaded precision-class
large-size bearings are contained to
obtain the appropriate rotational
characteristics according to the particular
dimensions of the table.
The table drive uses two-speed
transmission and AC
acceleration/transmission motors based
on quench-lapped precision gearing, and
thus allows powerful cutting over a wide
speed range.
Since the table bed, the column, and the
table-rotating motor are separated and
power is transmitted via V-belting, the
table does not directly undergo the
effects of the heat or vibration stemming
from the motor.

■OMega Tool-Clamping Mechanism
■OMega - MThe mounting surface for turning tools,
i.e., the Dual contact surface is completely
independent of the tapered spindle
surface. Thus, the spindle bearings are
prevented from being damaged by any
external force during turning operations.
In addition to the ram that has been
increased in size, a newly developed
auxiliary clamping mechanism is
employed to offer an excellent cutting
capability. Also, protective plate is
provided to prevent
dirt from sticking and deteriorating
accuracy and thus to allow heavy-duty
cutting and highly accurate machining.
(Patent pending)
The tool shank for a rotary tool and the
pull-stud conform to MAS403 and can be
shared between machines. These
sections also support imultaneous contact
BIG+ specifications as standard.
■OMegaThe O-M's own powerful pull-stud and the
Dual contact surface made up of a large-
size taper and an edge ensure highly
accurate and powerful clamping.

Feed Mechanism
Both the vertical (Z-AXIS) drive and the
horizontal (X-AXIS) drive employ an AC
servomotor and a large-diameter ball
screw. Since the feed guideway
(BOXWAY guide) uses a sliding system
consisting of a quench-lapped surface
and a low-friction slide liner, the intended
capabilities of the feed mechanism
excellent in vibration absorption are
developed to their maximum during
grooving, intermittent cutting, heavy-duty
cutting, and finish cutting. Tool head alignment feature is provided to allow
easy alignment of perpendicularity, so this
mechanism is also excellent in
maintainability.
The quench-lapped double-way wide
sliding surface develops excellent wear
resistance, and stable accuracy is
maintained over a long term. The vertical
drive uses 200-mm pitched step plates
and hydraulic locating pins to obtain high
positioning
accuracy and parallelism. The crossrail,
after being positioned, is fixed by strong
clamps.
(For the OMega50/60 Series, the cross
rail is of the fixed type.)

Optional Machine Components and Automating Units
Grinding holder
Designed for horizontal hole machining in the
direction of the table center.
Allows automatic tool changing by an ATC unit.
Angle attachment
This system automatically measures workpiece
diameter and surface level differences and
performs any necessary offset operations. The
system minimizes mistakes in measured data
reading and in correction data calculation and
input, and thus contributes to reduction in
working time, to improvement in machine
availability, and to unattended machine
Part probe
The chips occurring during machining are
carried to the machine exterior by these
units.
Chip conveyor and chip tank
This system automatically measures
the position of the tool nose. If this
position deviates from an offset
reference position, the deviation will be
registered in the ware offset area
corresponding to the tool.
Tool nose wear and chipping status
can also be confirmed.
Tool probe
A semi-dry unit for mixing high-pressure
air and a trace amount of water into mist
form and injecting the mist from the nozzle
located on the shank. Since the heat-of-
vaporization of water is used for
machining, this unit is excellent in
ecological terms and in resource saving.

achievable with conventional wet
machining that uses large quantities of
coolant can be

The ATC tool magazine is mounted at the
right end of the crossrail, and is separated
from the cutting area by an auto-door.
During ATC indexing, the command-
specified location is selected on a random
basis and this unit is indexed to this location
by high-speed shortcut rotation. For
OMega-M, the tool change time is reduced
to about half that of our conventional model.
Stand-alone magazines with a tool storage
capacity of 40, 60, or 90 are also available.
Automatic Pallet Changer (APC)
This unit for greatly improving productivity
employs successive mechanical operation
and an arc acceleration/deceleration
mechanism (patent pending), thus allowing
rapid transfer of the pallet table.
The unit is of a flexible design excellent in
expandability so as to meet FMS
specifications, including a multi-pallet (4-, 6-,
or
10-pallet) pallet table scheme. The pallet
change time is reduced to about half that of
our conventional system (3-station 2-pallet
type).
