Interactive meeting with NFCSFL team
A joint meeting of ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad and National Federation of Cooperative
Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF),
New Delhi was organised at IIMR
on 16 October, 2018. Dr. SS Rao,
Director in‐charge briefed on the
research activities pertaining to
sweet sorghum at IIMR‐
Hyderabad and its earlier col‐
laborations with private sugar industries. Mr. Prakash Nai‐
knavare, Managing Director of
NFSCF highlighted the recent Na‐
tional Policy on Biofuels 2018 and
the revised lucrative procure‐
ment price of Rs.59 per litre for juice based ethanol. He added that ethanol is the sunrise industry and feedstock’s
such as sugarcane and sweet sorghum are complementary crops which can fit in the sugarcane cropping and milling
system, benefiting farmers and as well as in‐
dustry. Dr. RB Doule, Chief Sugar Cane Advi‐
sor, NFCSF, suggested the mixing of sweet
sorghum juice with sugarcane molasses in
different ratios for higher ethanol recovery
may be viable. Dr. AV Umakanth, Principal
Investigator, AICRP‐Sweet Sorghum show‐
cased the technologies available in the na‐
tional program for exploitation of biofuels
from sweet sorghum. It was decided to go for
two big mill tests together during summer
and kharif seasons of 2019, to assess the fea‐
sibility and economics of biofuel production
from sweet sorghum. Scientists from IIMR Drs. CV Ratnavathi, S Ravi Kumar and B Venkatesh Bhat and Mr. Anil rep‐
resentative from ICRISAT participated in the deliberations.
Finger millet Germplasm Field Day ICAR‐IIMR‐Hyderabad organized Finger millet germplasm field day on 12 October 2018. A Total of 30 researchers from ICAR‐IIMR, AICRP on Small millets and ICAR‐NBPGR participated this
programme. A Total of 2013 accessions of finger millet germ‐plasm were displayed in the field and the participants selected the material based on their desirable agro‐morphological traits. There were 200 selections made by the participants. The germ‐plasm related issues and the technical programme for 2019‐20 under CRP‐AB‐SM was discussed with the AICRP on Small millets, ICAR‐IIMR and ICAR‐NBPGR Scientists.

One-day Workshop on Millets and Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Millets Sector A one‐day workshop on “Millets and Entrepreneurship Opportunities in Millets Sector”, was conducted at VSU Nellore, Andhra Pradesh by Nutrihub, Indian Institute of Millets Research (IIMR) in association with the Depart‐ment of Food Technology, Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU), Nellore on 22 October 2018. About 200 partici‐pants including students, research scholars, academic
staff of the University besides 20 local farmers of Nel‐lore region actively participated in this event.
ICAR‐IIMR was represented by Drs. B Dayakar Rao, Prin‐cipal scientist & CEO Nutrihub, D Balakrishna, Principal scientist, and Amasiddha Bellundagi, Scientist. The other dignitaries on the dais were Prof. A. Durga Prasada Rao, Registrar, VSU, Prof. A. Prasad (Principal) and Prof. G. Vijay Anand (Head, Department of Food Technology, VSU). The other participant from IIMR was: Srinivas B, Incubation Manager, Nutrihub. During the scientific ses‐
sions, Dr. B Dayakar Rao on millets spoke on the Smart
Foods for Future. Dr Rao, highlighted the importance of Nutritional and Health Benefits of Millets. Subse‐quently, Dr. D Balakrishna, Principal Scientist, IIMR deliv‐ered lecture on Overview of Research and Development of Millets and Dr. Amasiddha Bellundagi, Scientist, IIMR spoke about the measures to be taken for successful cultivation of millet crops. A special session on opportu‐nities and challenges in millets sector was conducted by Mr. Srinivas B, Incubation Manager, Nutrihub, IIMR.The above workshop organized as a part of Promotional ac‐tivities of Millet cultivation under National Food Security Mission on Millets in Andhra Pradesh.
Certified Farm Advisor Training on Millets con-cludes at ICAR-IIMR Nutrihub‐The business incubator of ICAR‐Indian Insti‐tute of Millets Research in collaboration with National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management (MANAGE), Hyderabad organized fifteen days training program for Agricultural Officers of Eleven states during 27 September to 11 October, 2018 at premises of IIMR.
A group of 29 Agricultural Officers from Telangana, An‐
dhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Arun‐achal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala,
West Bengal and Odisha. This exclusive training was or‐ganized to boost the value added technologies of Millets at various states. In Fifteen days training, millets proc‐essing machinery were demonstrated and hands on Training were given to trainees on millets product devel‐opment. Trainees visited the Millets demonstration fields and incubation centre at ICAR‐IIMR. Trainees showed keen interest in various value added products prepared from millets and interested to start millets based enterprises. Program was concluded at ICAR ‐ IIMR in presence of Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, ICAR‐IIMR Dr. Dayakar Rao, CEO, nutrihub and Dr. Sangappa, Scientist, ICAR‐IIMR. Eventually, certificates and study material was given to participants on this occasion. Visit of Dr. Mangala Rai Dr. Mangala Rai, former Secretary, DARE and Director General‐ICAR visited IIMR, Hyderabad on 25 October, 2018. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR explained him
about the ongoing research activities, action plans, and monitoring techniques being practiced at IIMR to in‐crease the research and scientific output. Dr. Mangala Rai also interacted with the staff of IIMR and advised them to set realistic targets to achieve the goals in a given time frame. In his thought provoking address, he complimented the work done by the institute including the achievements. But, he reiterated that millets needs to be brought back to food plate to provide alternate

grains to address malnutrition and steps need to be taken to remove the bottlenecks in supply chain, value chain and Farm gate processing. Vigilance Awareness Week observed ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millets Research ob‐
served "Vigilance Awareness Week" from 29 October
2018 to 3 November 2018 for spreading awareness against corruption and to encourage measures to im‐prove the overall functioning in the institute as per Councils instructions. The theme of this year's Vigilance Awareness Week is 'Eradicate Corruption – Build a New India'. The observance of this week commenced with a pledge administered by the Senior Administrative Offi‐cer in Hindi and Director, IIMR in English to all the staff on 29 October 2018 at 11AM in the Conference Hall. To mark this Awareness Week, IIMR organized essay writ‐ing, quiz, poster and debate competitions for all the staff of IIMR and prizes were distributed the winners.
Monitoring of Little millet germplasm A Total of 1800 accessions of little millet germplasm characterization was monitored at ICAR‐NBPGR (RS) –
Akola under CRP‐AB. The agro‐morphological data has been collected. More than 20 accessions with high yield‐ing capability were noted. About 200 accessions are photo sensitive and 50 are drought tolerant lines. The variability on panicle compactness, glume colour, plant height and earliness were prominent traits.
Millet Walkathon in Vijayawada ICAR‐Indian Institute of Millet Research Organisation, Hyderabad in association with Ganay Millet Private Lim‐ited, Vijayawada would organise a ‘Millet Walkathon’ in the first week of December, 2018 to create awareness
among public about Millets and their nutritional bene‐fits.
In this regard a logo was released at the ICAR‐IIMR, Hy‐derabad. Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR appreciated the partners for their initiative and cooperation in orga‐nizing this alertness campaign to mark the Year of Mil‐lets ‐ 2018. He stressed that one should focus on their food habits to transform the country into a healthy na‐tion.M/s. 8 Millet House ownerMr.MV Prasad Raju said that responding to the call given by the government of India, the Millet Walkathon will be organised and about 10,000 people would participate which will begin at BRTS road in Vijayawada. The State and national lead‐ers, Bollywood and Tollywood actors, school and college students, NGO organisations, members of walkers clubs, prominent people of the city would participate in the walkathon.

ties Phule Revathi and M 35‐1 were distributed to the farmers of Godhumaguda and Sarpanapally villages in Tharur Mandal in Vikarabad district of Telangana State Under NABARD Sponsored Project entitled “Promotion of millets technology and entrepreneurial skills among farmers and youth of Vikarabad district of Telangana” on 5 and 18 October, 2018 respectively. In this event a total of 30 farmers Participated and collected the seed. Dr. B Subbarayudu, Principal Scientist briefed them about the package and the practice to be adopted in sorghum cultivation during Rabi season.
National Workshop on Digital Field Book ICAR-NBPGR (RS) – Akola: ICAR‐IIMR‐Hyderabad organ‐
ized National Workshop on Digital Field Book at ICAR‐
NBPGR‐RS‐Akola on 10 October, 2018. A total of 20 M.Sc (Botany) students from Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vishwa vidyala, Akola besides scientists and tech‐nical staff from NBPGR‐ RS participated in this work‐shop. The lecture on Digital Field Book was delivered in the first session followed by hands‐on practical.
NAU-Navsari: ICAR‐IIMR‐Hyderabad organized National
Workshop on Digital Field Book at NAU‐Navsari on 29 October 2018. There were 300 participants from Navsari Agricultural University, Navsari and 5 Agricultural col‐leges under NAU. The workshop was inaugurated by Dr CJ Dangaria, Honorable Vice Chancellor of NAU in the presence of Dr SR Chaudhary, Director of Research, NAU
and other dignitaries. The lecture on Digital Field Book was delivered in the morning session followed by hands‐on practical sessions for the participants. Specific prob‐
lems were addressed using digital field book for Rice. In the afternoon, lecture on Introduction to Apps, Top 10 Agricultural Apps in India and Apps in ICAR. The pro‐gramme was organized by ICAR‐IIMR‐Hyderabad and AICRP on Sorghum centre Surat at NAU‐Surat. The above programmes were coordinated by Dr. M Elangovan. "Rashtriya Ekta Diwas”
National Unity day (also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) was celebrated on 31 October 2018 at ICAR‐Indian Insti‐
tute of Millets Research, Hyderabad. It was celebrated
to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Val‐labhbhai Patel who unified the country. The aim of this event was to enlighten the youth of the country to be aware of, and provide an opportunity for everyone to contribute to the integral strength of the nation. It was also to tell all to realize how national integrity helps in defeating the actual and potential threats for unity, in‐tegrity and security of the nation.To mark this great oc‐casion, various activities and events including “Integrity Pledge” in both Hindi and English,and “Run for Unity” were organised. Staff of IIMR actively participated in these events. Dr. SS Rao, Principal Scientist, coordinated this event. “Hindi Chetana Maas” Valediction Celebration Hindi Chetana Maas was celebrated from 14 September – 23 October, 2018 at IIMR, Hyderabad. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Vilas A Tonapi, Director, IIMR on
14September, 2018. The valedictory function was organ‐ized on 23 October, 2018. At the outset Dr. Mahesh Kumar, Senior Technical Officer (OL) detailed about the programmes conducted and also introduced the Chief Guest. Dr. Tonapi welcomed Dr. Ghanshyam, Principal, Nalgonda Women’s Degree College, Nalgonda and the Chief Guest of the Programme. Dr. Jinu Jacob, Officer‐in‐Change, Hindi Cell presented the report on official lan‐

guage implementation initiatives at IIMR during last year and Dr. Mahesh Kumar presented the Report on various programmes organized during Hindi Chetana Maas.
The Chief Guest distributed the cash awards and certifi‐cates to the winners of various competitions and Dr.
Tonapi gave away the consolation prizes and certificates to the other participants and Mementos to the Chief Guest and judges of the various competitions organized
during Hindi Chetana Maas. In his address Dr Ghan‐shyam stated that Language is the special identity of
Human being, if we forget our languages then our cul‐ture will disappear. In his presidential remark Dr. Tonapi stated that Official Language Implementation at IIMR has improved significantly and it will be further intensi‐fied. Scientists, Technical and Administrative personnel, research scholars and students of the IIMR participated in the above competitions with great enthusiasm. The above programme was coordinated by Dr. Jinu Jacob and Dr. Mahesh Kumar.
New Appointment Mr. Surabhi Naresh joined the Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad as a Technical Assistant (T3) on 29 Sep‐tember, 2018. He has qualified through the All India level examination con‐ducted for ICAR by ASRB. We wish all the best to Mr. Naresh and welcome him to the IIMR Family.
Recognition Dr. CV Ratnavathi, Principal Scientist, (Biochemistry), IIMR has been recognized as a peer reviewer of UK Research and Innovation BBSRC projects on Food and
Nutrition. Congratulations to Dr. Rat‐navathi for this accomplishment.
Memorandum of Agreement M/s Everest Crop Sciences Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad: Memorandum of Agreement between ICAR‐IIMR and
M/s Everest Crop sciences Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad, Hydera‐
bad was signed on 29 October, 2018, for technical knowhow of seed production and marketing of forage sorghum hybrid ‐ CSH 24MF. Dr Vilas A Tonapi, Director – IIMR on behalf of IIMR and Sh. Prateesh Nellolla, Di‐rector on behalf of M/s Everest Crop sciences Pvt Ltd, Hyderabad, signed and exchanged the agreement. The agreement signing was facilitated by ITMU unit repre‐sented by Dr C Aruna, Principal Scientist and Dr. Avinash Singode, Scientist, IIMR.
Exhibition stalls organized
At AGRITEX, Hyderabad. ICAR‐IIMR organized exhibition stall and showcased technologies developed by the institute in AGRITEX held at Hyderabad on 4‐7 October, 2018. More than 7,000 Visitors Interacted and participated in the event. Visitors
across the Pan India visited ICAR‐IIMR stall and appreci‐ated value added products developed by the Institute. They expressed interest in getting trained on Processing & Value addition in Millets and Incubation at IIMR. Mr. Srinivas Bollam, Incubation Manager, Hima Bindu, Prashanth and Trivikram showcased value added tech‐nologies in Millets under the guidance of Dr. Dayakar Rao, CEO, Nutrihub and Dr. Sangappa, scientist, ICAR‐IIMR coordinated this event. At NASC, New Delhi ICAR‐IIMR organized exhibition stall and showcased technologies developed by the institute during Agri‐Strart‐up and Entrepreneurship conclave held at NASC,

New Delhi during 16‐17 October, 2018. Shri Radha Mohan Singh, Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare inaugurated the Conclave. As a part of conclave, various sessions were also organized on several aspects of entre‐preneurship develop‐ment in Agriculture. More than 1,000 Visitors Interacted and partici‐pated in the event. Would‐be entrepreneurs appreciated value added products developed by the Institute. Dr. T. Mahopatra, Secretary DARE & Director General, ICAR also visited our stall. About 10 incu‐batees/start‐ups of ICAR‐IIMR exhibited their innovative products which attracted many policy makers to know the importance of millets. Dr. Vilas A. Tonapi, Director, ICAR‐IIMR, Dr. B. Exhibition Centre, Vashhi, Navi Mumbai during 23‐27 October, 2018. Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Honorable Union Minister of Food Processing Industries inaugu‐rated IUFoST. She highlighted the interventions bringing out significance in Indian Food Processing Sector. Along
with her Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary DARE & Director General (ICAR), also visited the stall and appre‐ciated IIMR’s effort in positioning millets into modern food habit. More than 50,000 visitors Interacted and participated in the event. Dr. Dayakar had an inspiring talk with the dignitaries like Professor K Niranjan from University of Reading, UK, Professor Naik and Sahu from
IIT Delhi, Professor Rao from IIT Kharagpur, Professor Singhal from ICT Mumbai, Dr. Purushottam, Chairman and Managing Director of National Research Develop‐ment Corporation, Mr. Sanjay Chakraborty, Manager, Catering Services to IRCTC etc. Many visitors expressed interest to avail the incubation facility of ICAR‐IIMR. Dr. Soumya Ranjan Purohit, RA and Mr. Sanket Jawal, SRF participated and Dr. B Dayakar Rao, CEO and Dr. San‐gappa, coordinated this event.
At MTNL Perfect Health Mela, New Delhi The 25th MTNL Perfect Health Mela (PHM), a one‐of‐its‐kind event organized by the Heart Care Foundation of India (HCFI) from 24 October – 28 October 2018 at the Talkatora Indoor stadium, New Delhi to generate all‐around awareness on health. In this event ICAR‐IIMR
arranged dinner on 25 October, 2018 with millets. The dinner was completely of millet foods encompassing 5 recipes. Shri Ashok Kumar Choubey, Honorable Minister of State, Health & Family Welfare, Government of India, tasted millet preparations and appreciated the efforts made by IIMR and Hope Blessings Pvt. Ltd. About 500 doctors interacted and discussed about the importance of millets in our daily diet. E. Kiranmai, RA and K. Vijaya Lakshmi, Technical participated and Dr. B Dayakar Rao, CEO coordinated this event with the support of IIMR’s incubate Mr. Philip Ratnam of Hope Blessings Pvt. Ltd.
Millet Germplasm Exploration in Dong District in Gujarat
ICAR‐IIMR has undertook a millets germplasm explora‐tion in the Dong district in Gujarat and collected 37 ac‐cessions of five different millets during 27‐28 October

metadata for decision making support to scientists and governments, to the attending IIMR scientists and Tech‐nical Staff. Dr. Strey discussed the technological inputs
that go into the App and the avenues for collaboration and data sharing with IIMR for all millet crops. It was further agreed that Dr. Srikanth from ICRISAT would further carry forward the process of collaboration with IIMR for getting the information on aspects of millets crop production, protection, and providing access to meta data on millet crops for R&D purposes of IIMR. The meeting was coordinated by Dr. B. Venkatesh Bhat.

The Quarterly meeting of the Institute Joint Staff com‐mittee was held on 23 October,2018 at IIMR. The fol‐lowing staff members were present in the meeting: Offi‐cial side: Dr. Vilas A Tonapi,Dr. SS Rao, Dr. Deepika, Sh. Charles Ekka (SAO); KV Raghavendra Rao (In‐charge FAO) Staff Side: Dr. V Ravikumar, K Sanath Kumar, Ra‐jappa and VSG Parvathi. The Member‐Secretary pre‐sented the action taken report on agenda items. The progress and action taken was discussed by the mem‐bers. Women Protection Committee
The meeting of “Women Protection Committee” was held on 23 October, 2018 at IIMR. The following staff members were present in the meeting: Dr. CV Rat‐navathi; Dr. HS Talwar; Dr. C Aruna; Dr. P Sanjana; and Mr. Charles Ekka (Member‐Secretary). No agenda was received for discussion in the meeting. The committee expressed their satisfaction over the congenial atmos‐phere prevailing in the institute and decided to hold quarterly meetings regularly according to the schedule. Institute Grievance Cell
The Quarterly meeting of the Institute Grievance Cell was held on 23 October,2018 at IIMR. The following staff members were present in the meeting: Vilas A Tonapi, Director – Chairman; FAO – Member; AO – Member Secretary. The Member‐Secretary presented the action taken report on agenda items. The progress was discussed by the members.
2018. In which, Little millet (16 acc), Finger millet (14
acc.), Sorghum (5 acc.), 1 accession of Foxtail millet and Barnyard millet were collected. The exploration covered 27 villages in 4 Taluks in Dong district. The altitude ranged between 161‐526 m above MSL. The exploration was undertaken in collaboration with the All India Coor‐dinated Research Project on Small millets centre Waghai. Dr M Elangovan, Economic Botanist and Dr Har‐ish Patel and Birjesh Patel were the team members of the exploration.
Visitors: Tamil Nadu Farmers: A group of 20 Farmers vis‐
ited ICAR‐IIMR on 25October, 2018 from Villapuram dis‐trict of Tamil Nadu state under Agriculture Technology Management Agency (ATMA) project. Drs. RR Chapke and Sangappa, briefed about the institute activities and later demonstrated Millets processing and value added
technologies at centre of excellence. Mr. Manoj, Techni‐cal Assistant, nutrihub interacted with farmers in Tamil. A group of Farmers grow small millets at their farm and showed keen interest in processing of small millets at farm gate. They were also have given technical Know‐how of millets production. Drs. RR Chapke and San‐gappa, Scientist, coordinated this event with help of nutrihub.
Plantix App : The working team from PEAT, Germany who developed the mobile App ‘Plantix’ (pests & diseases diagnostics App for farmers) visited IIMR on 11th October, 2018 to discuss about their App and look at possible collabora‐tions with IIMR. The team consisted of Dr. Robert Strey, Chief Technology Officer and Ms. Bianca Kummer, Inter‐national Cooperations, from PEAT, Germany, accompa‐nied by their partner Dr. Srikanth Rupavatharam, Scien‐tist (Digital Agriculture), ICRISAT, Patancheru. Ms. Bi‐anca Kummer introduced the Plantix App, its functions and utilities for use by farmers and the availability of
