When I was in both primary and secondary school in Bogot, I had some
extraordinary teachers, and I also had some really mediocre ones; when I
becamea teacher, I had some marvellous colleagues whom Ive learnt a
lot from (and still do), and Ive also had some utterly embarrassing ones.
Cuando estuve en primaria y bachillerato en Bogot, tuve docentes
extraordinarios, y tambin tuve unos realmente mediocres; cuando me
volv un professor, tuve algunos colegas maravillosos de quienes he
aprendido mucho (y lo sigo haciendo), y tambin he tenido unos realmente
vergonzosos.
Something Ive always wondered about, in any case, is how much
pressure is constantly put on teenagers regarding the ICFES Exam, to the
point that literally thousands of students are outright traumatised by the
prospect, as the motivate through fear approach has gone too far.
Algo sobre lo que siempre me he preguntado, en cualquier caso, es
cunta presin se coloca constntemente en los adolescentes acerca del
examen del ICFES, hasta el punto que literalmente miles de estudiantes
estn completamente traumatizados por el prospecto, ya que el enfoque

Many of the things said by many school teachers about ICFES are either
exaggerated or out-dated or simply false, such as thinking that it defines
and shapes a persons future (the matter is far more complex and deserves its own
research so I wont delve on it here), but there is one aspect of the whole
phenomenon that strikes me as completely hypocritical: how would
teachers perform if undergoing the same situation?
Muchas de las cosas dichas por muchos profesores de colegio acerca del
ICFES son o exageradas o desactualizadas o simplemente falsas, como
pensar que define y da forma al futuro de una persona (esa cuestin esmucho ms compleja y merece su propia investigacin as que no me meter con eso
ac), pero hay un aspecto de todo ese fenmeno que me parece
completamente hipcrita: cmo les/nos ira a los docentes bajo esa
misma situacin?
Secondary school students are encouraged and often even pressured to
know about every subject theyre taught or, at least in this case, about
every subject thats part of the exam (maths, language, physics, chemistry,biology, philosophy, social sciences, English and the one they choose outside the common
nucleus), yet a lot of teachers dont fulfil that requirement.
A los estudiantes de bachillerato se los motiva e incluso a menudo se los
presiona para que sepan sobre cada materia que se les ensea o, al
menos en este caso, acerca de cada materia que es parte del examen
(matemticas, lenguaje, fsica, qumica, biologa, filosofa, sociales, ingles
y la que elijan por fuera del ncleo comn), sin embargo muchos
docentes no cumplen ese requisito.
I personally think that if we got teachers to sit the ICFES Saber 11 tests,
more than three quarters of them would fail miserably on every subject
other than the one they teach; at least one of five would also perform
poorly on their own forte; in fact, at least half dont even pronounce the
acronym correctly (they say ifex).
Personalmente creo que si colocramos a los docentes a que presentaran
las pruebas ICFES Saber 11, a ms de tres cuartas partes les ira
miserablemente mal en todas las materias aparte de la que ensean; al
menos uno de cada cinco tendra rendimiento pobre en su fuerte; de
hecho, al menos la mitad ni siquiera pronuncian el acrnimo

Maybe Im wrong hopefully I am, but itd be nice if one year from now
there could be clear and truthful statistics that would prove so. The
monetary cost wouldnt be excessive: teachers earning minimum wage
and working ten months a year would only need to invest 0.7% of their
income to sit the exam as alumni. A sensible institution would also
consider the possibility of at least partially taking care of those expenses,
as theyd benefit everyone involved.
Tal vez estoy equivocado ojal lo est, pero sera bueno si de aqu a un
ao hubiesen estadsticas claras y veraces que lo probaran. El costo
monetario no sera excesivo: los profesores que ganan el salario mnimo
y que trabajan diez meses al ao solo necesitaran invertir 0.7% de sus
ingresos para tomar el examen como egresados. Una institucin sensata
considerara tambin la posibilidad de al menos parcialmente encargarse
de esos gastos, ya que beneficiaran a todos los que estn involucrados.
For students, itd be motivating to know that their teachers have to share
the pressure, the anxiety and the responsibility involved in sitting those
tests. Itd also prove that all subjects are connected, and that a good
command of the language (e.g. reading comprehension) is useful for every
field, as is having a good understanding of bar graphs (they dont apply just to
maths) and so on.
Para los estudiantes sera motivante saber que sus profesores tienen que
compartir la presin, la ansiedad y la responsabilidad involucradas en
tomar esas pruebas. Tambin demostrara que todas las materias estn
conectadas, y que un buen comando del idioma (por ejemplo, comprensin de
lectura) es til para todo campo, como lo es tener un buen entendimiento
de grficos de barras (no solo se aplican a matemticas) y as sucesivamente.
For teachers, itd be a nice way to revise, keep themselves updated and
have a closer link with the students, as theyd have a clearer idea of the
exams the latter are being prepared for, and theyd work shoulder to
shoulder, which would reduce the teenage view of the teacher as an
enemy (by extension, itd be fantastic ifparents also took the tests, same reasons
apply).
Para los docentes, sera una buena manera de repasar, mantenerse al da
y tener un vnculo ms cercano con los estudiantes, ya que tendran una
idea ms clara de los exmenes para los cuales se prepara a estos
ltimos, y trabajaran codo a codo, lo cual reducira la vision adolescente
del profesor como un enemigo (por extension, sera fantastic si los padres tambin
tomaran las pruebas, las mismas razones aplican).
For schools, itd be an unbiased very professional way to rank their
teaching staff the same way they rank their students, and it wouldnt be
a surprise if very often the former were actually outdone by the latter.
Sometimes students can be a nightmare, but sometimes we are thenightmare for them, and we fail to realise that when those young
impulsive creatures think they know more than us, sometimes they
actually do.
Para los colegios, sera una forma objetiva y muy profesional de medir a
su cuerpo docente de la misma manera como miden a sus estudiantes, y
no sera una sorpresa si muy a menudo los primeros fuesen superados
por estos ltimos. A veces los estudiantes pueden ser una pesadilla, peroa veces nosotros somos la pesadilla para ellos, y no nos damos cuenta
que cuando esas creaturas jvenes e impulsivas creen que saben ms
que nosotros, a veces en realidad lo hacen.
