Success built inModern stock management is far more than simply storing and handling of materials,
products and tools. Nowadays, the warehouse is just part of an overall materials flow
system, and is therefore viewed and used increasingly as an active instrument.
Reliable delivery without excess stockBrave new world: Ordered today – delivered tomorrow. That's what customers expect
today. The ability to “deliver the goods” is decisive for a competitive edge. Obviously,
one could meet these demands by maintaining a comprehensive stock – with corre-
sponding capital lockup, but there's no need to swallow that bitter pill – there are other
solutions! Megamat's intelligent controls and software solutions optimize the inter-
actions between procurement, manufacturing, and distribution. This ensures that
surplus materials and dead stock are no more of an issue than unused storage space or
unnecessary routes during order picking.
Open up productive potentialApart from fast access times, the concept of customer service is becoming increasingly
important: Megamat's logistic solutions greatly improve service quality. Even complex
and multi-stage order picking procedures are executed reliably and speedily. The result:
throughput and productivity increased, and savings potentials are opened up – not only
in terms of material, but also in handling and personnel.
More efficiencySearching and running around in the warehouse, manual storage – this method is not
only tiresome but also outdated. In addition to easier working, innovative logistics sys-
tems also provide transparency: Stock-keeping and evaluation of basic data are just as
simple as making inventories. And that's not all: Possible sources of error during stor-
age and retrieval are drastically reduced. Megamat controls and software are self-
explanatory and user-friendly, with simple, clear menus. There's no need for intensive
training courses or costly familiarization procedures.

Sequence control – storage location structure andinformation management
Basic functions WMS
Example of a typicaldistribution center
Really smart
It's the sequence control system, which
puts intelligence into the mechanical
part of a storage system. It determines
the technical performance. It controls
the precise movement of trays, shelves
and bins, monitors all safety-relevant
procedures, and communicates with the
operator via the display.
Refreshingly openand flexibleMegamat has given a modular structure
to all its control systems. You can choose
between a single control system, operate
several interlinked units via a PC, or de-
cide on a sophisticated internal logistics
system with integrated stock manage-
ment. No matter which solution you in-
stall today, your system remains flexible.

EDP – when thingsreally get movingThe pressure to rationalize is growing
continuously – in all parts of a company.
Therefore, the guideline for efficient
stock management must be: as little as
possible, as much as necessary. A re-
quirement that can usually be imple-
mented only with the use of Electronic
Data Processing Systems.
Advantages
Megamat software solutions can signifi-
cantly reduce average retrieval times and
stock levels. Similarly, the location of
stock can be optimized: fast-movers are
stored in the most quickly accessible
locations, slower-moving goods in other
areas. Detailed data is acquired and
processed without delay; all stock move-
ments are registered immediately. This
improves stock control, and permits pre-
cise evaluations that serve as the basis
for planning and forecasting.
A concept for growth
Depending on your needs and require-
ments, Megamat offers both machine-
and PC-oriented software solutions. The
spectrum ranges from simple stock man-
agement up to supervisory host setups
and linked PPS and ERP systems – every-
thing is possible. When required, you can
install additional modules. This keeps
your investments within the planned
limits during every expansion stage, and
you remain open for new market devel-
opments and opportunities.
Everything clear from A to ZTerminology
– ASCII: standard character set used to display texts.
– ERP software: stands for Enterprise Resource Planning, and
is the generic term for a software package that links all de-
partments of a company. For example SAP R/3, Baan, Brain,
NaVision.
– Ethernet: a standardized network system.
– Gateway package: this software package provides a bridge
from one system to another, e.g. also to supervisory systems.
– Host: network computer, whose resources can be accessed by
the participating “guest” devices.
– IDoc: container for the exchange of data between SAP R/3,
R/2 and third-party systems.
– Interface: connecting point between external devices (e.g.
printers) and the computer.
– LCD: liquid crystal display (screen).
– MM 240, MM 260, MM 550: Megamat machine controls.
– ML 650, ML 900: Megalogistik.
– ML Com: Megalogistik Communication.
– PPS system: stands for Production Planning System.
– Remote maintenance: a communication link between the
customer's computer and the computer in our Support Center
is established via the Internet. This permits our experts to
carry out administrative activities, and to correct faults.
– Router: intelligent link between networks.
– RS 232: serial interface between two systems (e.g. barcode
scanner)
– RS 485: serial interface between several systems, whereby
one system controls all the data traffic between all the linked
devices (e.g. a computer connected to several Megamat
units).
– Server: central computer that is accessible for all devices in a
network.
– SM: stock management
– SMS: stock management software
– tRFC: stands for transactional Remote Function Call, and is
used by the SAP function modules for interchanging mes-
sages, and for downloading control recipes.

Makes everything Mega-easy:MM 240/260!
Get on board:MM 240Storing could hardly be simpler or more
convenient: The standard location con-
troller MM 240 with digital path meas-
urement guarantees lightning-fast
access to stored goods. All safety-rele-
vant functions are monitored continu-
ously. The LCD graphic display is easy to
read, and an extra-large keypad simpli-
fies operation. Key layout and key mark-
ing are logical and self-explanatory.
Training requirements and system famil-
iarization time are minimal. This helps to
prevent operating errors and downtime.
Combining, inte-grating, benefiting:MM 260
In addition to the functions of the
MM 240, the MM 260 controller features
an interface for direct linking to the
Megalogistik or any other stock manage-
ment system. This is important, if exter-
nal access is required, e.g. for automa-
tion, production or order handling. Thus,
any number of units can be operated in a
group, with direct control via a PC.

Overall stockmanagementYou need a powerful stock management
system, but without an in-house EDP de-
partment or your own IT expert? The
MM 550 controller is ideal for companies
with small stores and limited numbers of
articles. This controller offers you all the
advantages of a stock management sys-
tem – without a PC. No additional in-
vestments in hardware or software are
necessary. What's more, it also eliminates
any questions regarding EDP know-how.
All storage data athandThe MM 550 controller has its own inter-
nal database. Moreover, the data record-
ing software has an interface for import-
ing article master data in the ASCII or
Excel format. This avoids tedious manual
data entry. And that's not all: You can
also use the controller directly to do your
order handling. If your store grows, your
logistics simply grows, too: the MM 550
can be expanded easily to include the
PC-based stock management system
Megalogistik ML.

Ideal for small tomedium storesThe right software for every store: With
low to medium turnover rates in smaller
storage units, Megalogistik is an ideal
solution. The standard PC software
ML 650 is designed for functional, effi-
cient stock management, even with large
numbers of articles and several storage
sites. Regardless of whether the system is
static or dynamic, articles stored in the
Megamat or Megalift can be managed
with an external PC, including minimum
stock levels and associated unit of quan-
tity. Editing of lists, print operations, and
labelling as needed and each access is
recorded.
Features andbenefits
ML 650 has a modular structure, and
offers all the advantages of a powerful
PC user interface. Several units can also
be operated as a group. The database is

Professional photo printers are
equipped with highly sensitive laser
units, which are stored and managed
efficiently at AGFA by means of Mega-
lifts and the PC software ML 650. The
trays are fitted with special holders for
the laser units, whereby the system
distinguishes between new units and
repair orders. It ensures that the test
time of 3 days is observed. After re-
trieval, every laser unit can be assigned
to a specific printer.
Versatile and convenient:The ML 900 software solution
12

Storage space and retrievalstrategies with ML 900
14
Filling grade/Level display, Stock location occupation Overview of statistics
Should it be static ordynamic? As always, you have a choice: The ML 900
provides flexibility. When deciding for or
against a particular storage and retrieval
strategy, perfect order is not always the
best approach – “Chaos” has its advan-
tages! The decision for static or dynamic
stock management depends on many
factors.
Fixed locationsWith this approach, a specific storage
location is assigned to every article. The
articles can be arranged according to
certain criteria, e.g. weight, size, etc. If
possible, the replenishment source
should be close to the order picking loca-
tion. The locations are assigned and
changed manually. Advantage: article
weights and sizes can be taken into ac-
count during the order picking sequence
(from small to large, from light to heavy).
Chaotic assignmentof order pickinglocationsAll articles are stored without specific
space assignments. Any new storage/
order picking location is mostly situated
in the vicinity of the replenishment
source. Replenishment can be carried out
independently of the storage location.
Advantage: this approach results in high
performance, especially with two-stage
(article-based) order picking. Article
locations can be assigned dynamically –
optimum use is made of the storage
capacity.
15
Space assignment strategies of the ML 900
Strategy Brief description Advantages
Fixed assignment: fixed space assignment Fixed storage location for every article Access security (also in case of storagedata loss)
Zone assignment: free space assignment Storage of articles according to turnover Increased turnoverwithin defined areas frequency
Cross assignment: free space assignment Several storage locations for the same Access security in case one unit failswithin defined areas article distributed among several units
Chaotic storage: completely free space Storage of articles in arbitrary free Improved utilization of storage capacityassignment storage locations
Storage and retrieval strategies
Strategy Brief description Advantages
FIFO: first in first out Retrieval of articles that were stored first Avoids aged stock
Quantity adaption Retrieval of full and opened storage units Less re-storage, but more opened storageaccording to picking quantity units
Residual quantity preference Retrieval always from opened storage units Minimum opening (1 retrieval device / article)first
Route optimization: route-optimized storage Retrieval of articles with the shortest Minimized traveland retrieval access route
LIFO: last in first out Retrieval of articles that were stored most Avoids re-storage with certain storagerecently techniques
Practical example with ML 900Just-in-time retrieval asstandard
The ML 900 has been designed for com-
plex storage structures, as in the fol-
lowing case: Here, the powerful and
versatile software solution handles
standard parts according to the Kanban
strategy. There are no delays: the pick-
ing orders come from the host system.
During order picking, OEM labels are
printed for the article, and shipping/de-
livery is on the same day.
16
The future is here:ML Communication
Perfectly integratedinto all processesIncreasingly, companies are deciding to
combine all their departments in a cen-
tral ERP/PPS system. Megamat has
responded to these developments with
its host machine interface ML Communi-
cation. This gateway package provides
direct links to host software systems.

Practical example with ML ComUnlimited communication andbenefits
For Ferag GmbH, the host/machine inter-
face ML Communication provides unlim-
ited communication: The orders are
generated centrally in the company's head-
quarters, and the ERP system transmits the
data and picking orders online to the com-
puter in the central spare parts store in
Germany. Transcription errors and delays

controlled accordingly. Each order item is
acknowledged by means of the con-
troller's keypad, which simultaneously
calls the next item. If required, processed
orders can be reported to the host (oper-
ating systems: Windows, Linux, Unix,
IBM).

The SAP software provides an overall rep-
resentation and the integration of all
functions within a company. To an ever-
higher degree, stock management is
being viewed as an integral and impor-
tant part of the overall material flow
system, which is why the links to the
store have become a major issue. Mega-
mat offers a standardized host interface
using the SAP IDoc format. Data is ex-
changed by means of transactional Re-

Practical example:Gauselmann Project
A logistics solutionfor “fun and games”adp Gauselmann GmbH is a leading man-
ufacturer of slot machines and entertain-
ment equipment with and without
payouts. To guarantee a fast supply of
spares and replacement parts for their
customers, the company decided on a
sophisticated logistics solution: 6 Mega-
lifts FSE with the latest order picking
technology ensure the highest service
level. Order processing and management
of storage locations is done by means of
SAP R/3. Via the SAP interface WM-LSR
and using IDoc and tRFC, orders are
transferred to ML Com, which controls
the Megalifts.
Summary: Benefitsfor everyoneBefore the new logistics system was
introduced, parts were stored in a 4-tier
tray shelf. Storage capacity was at its
limits. Hard to believe but true: today, the
same floor space is used for storage,
order picking, and shipment – and only
60 % of the storage capacity is being
used! The new storage and order picking
technology has resulted in a 40 % pro-
ductivity increase, because orders can
now be processed in parallel.
Quality has top priority for adp GauselmannGmbH – which includes the commitment forcontinuous improvement in all areas.
ML Com combines several customer ordersinto a single collective picking job.First, an operator scans the customer ordernumber. The associated Megalifts arestarted simultaneously at the push of a but-ton. The employee at the lift display receivesall necessary information such as customerorder number, article ID, storage location, quantity, etc. LEDs in the retrieval equip-ment show the article positions.
