Your Choice of On-Site Sewage Treatment Where no Mains is AvailableSeptic Tanks are a well established option to be taken into consideration where nomainsdrainageisavailable.Itwouldbepreferabletoconsidertheinstallationof a sewage treatment plant or pumping station prior to that of a septic tank or as a finalconsiderationoncethesethreeoptionshavebeenexhaustedtoconsideracesspool installation.

Anua Septic Tanks may also be provided with integral pumping arrangements. This can be a a single pump installation incorporated within the tank itself or by the addition of additional chambers providing single or twin arrangements as required.

Installation • The Septic Tank should be positioned 7m from any habitable building.

• Provision should be made for tanker access for the annual desludge visit.

• Drainage Fields should be designed totherequirementsofEPACodeof PracticeandBuildingRegulations ApproveddocumentH(whichever is appropriate).

• To establish the correct drainage area required a percolation test should be carried out.

The Anua Septic Tank is constructed from GRP as a singular tank for ease of installation and ongoing operation. All units are made from strong, chemical-resistant watertight Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and are backed by Anua’s expert service team.

A septic tank is a separation system, where the clarifiedeffluentisdischarged.

1. Rawsewageentersthefirststageofthetank where solids settle by gravity to the bottom of the tank.2. Sludge levels reduce within this stage with the aid of naturally occurring anaerobic digestion.3. Theflowpassesupwardsthroughfurtherbaffle arrangementsprovidingfurtherclarification.4. Thesettledeffluentisdisplacedfromthetank bytheincomingsewageflow.5. Thepartiallytreatedeffluentthenflowsinto thepercolationareaorothersuitablefilterbed system.Anuamayalsosupplyafilterbedsystem: seeourPurafloproductforfurtherdetails.6. Sludges that build up in the base of the tank are emptied annually to ensure continued efficientrunning.

How to Conduct a Percolation TestIfyouwishtocarryoutapercolationtest,thisistheprocedureassetoutinBuildingRegulationsApprovedDocumentH(oftenreferredtoas BS-6297): To determine the area of land required, a percolation test is essential; the following method should be adopted:1. Excavate a hole 300mm square to a depth 250mm below the proposed invert level of the land drain. Where deep drains are necessary, the hole should conform to the shape at the bottom but may be may be enlarged above the 300mm level to enable safe excavation to be carried out.

2. Fill the 300mm square section of the hole to a depth of at least 300mm with water and allow it to seep awayovernight.Nextday,refillthetestsectionwith water to a depth of at least 300mm and observe the time, in seconds, for the water to seep away completely, between 75% full to 25% full level.3. Divide this time by 150, in millimetres of the water placed in the hole. The answer gives the average time required for the water to drop 1mm. Take care, when making the test, to avoid abnormal weather conditions such as heavy rain, severe frost ordrought.Carryoutthetestatleastthreetimes, in2holes,andtaketheaveragefigure4. Wheredeepexcavationsarenecessary,amodified test procedure may be adopted with a 300mm earth auger. Bore the test hole vertically to the appropriate depth, taking care to remove all loose debris. 5. Makewaterlevelobservationsreferringtoa fixeddatum,usingadipstickandsomesuitable alternative water level indicator.

The value found this way is called the ‘percolation value’ (Vp) of the soil and can be used to determine the area of drainagetrenchfloorsrequiredtodisperseeffluents.

Thefloorareaofsubsurfacedrainagetrench(AtinM2)requiredtodisperseeffluentsfromseptictanksmaybe calculated from: At = P x Vp X 0.25, where P is the number of persons served by the tank and Vp is the percolation value obtained as described.

Vp between 12 and 100 are suitable for this discharge method. The area determined should be used to calculate either a length of land drain, or alternatively, thefloorareaofoneormoreshallowsoakaways.

Drainage trenches should be from 300mm to 900mm wide and areas of undisturbed ground 2m wide should be maintained between parallel trenches.
