During the 2018-2019 year ahead we will be celebrating our rich history and recognizing those who have carried out the important work and mission of our organization since 1958. We began our celebration this summer when the Board of Directors hosted an afternoon tea for our 50 Year Honorary Members...Pat Bitzer, Peg George, Louise Heath, Mariana Hoffman, Amy Lancaster, Mary McCaw, Lois McClintock, Becky Powers, Jo Page, and Shirley Richardson. Nine of the ten honorary members attended and shared lots of fond memories of years gone by. It was a delightful afternoon! Our celebration will continue on Saturday, September 8 th , from 2:00 to 4:00pm with a garden party at the home of Mary Jo Buckwalter. This will be a Shape the Future event to welcome prospective members. See the invitation in this newsletter and plan to attend with a guest or two. For the new year, we have chosen the topic of “Education...Educating Ourselves and Others,” as a focus in selecting programs and establishing goals. Mary Bachman, Vice President of Programs, and the Programs Committee have worked diligently this summer to plan many interesting mission-based programs, including a spring trip, that will stimulate our minds and engage us in meaningful learning opportunities. The Membership Directory, which will be handed out at the garden party, will include all the details for the upcoming programs. Supporting the importance of being Life Long Learners, we are pleased to begin a new study group, Great Decisions, for our members. Organized by members Morgan Pickands and Diane Bridi, Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs. Participants read a briefing, watch a video, and meet for discussion. Continued from Page 1 Additional details regarding dates and location are highlighted in this newsletter. Please join us for this enriching opportunity! Educating our community about AAUW will be part of our education theme this year beginning with our participation in the Bucks County Book Festival in October. As AAUW members, we are the best ambassadors to spread the word about our mission. To that end, we will host a tabling event at the Bookfest on Sunday, October 14, as an outreach event in our community and in support of children's literacy. Local children's author, William Bentrim, will join us at our table to sell his books and support our branch. For every book Bill sells, he will donate $1.00 to our local scholarship fund. You can find more information about Bill and the books he has written online. This is just a glimpse of the exciting year ahead! I encourage you to attend all the meetings, programs and fundraisers we have planned and show your support of our mission. And by the way...

YOU ASKED.....WE LISTENED! Over the past few years, members have asked for more daytime programs and events and fewer night meetings. This year we are pleased to announce that in addition to the new study group that will meet during the daytime, we will have six (6) monthly daytime meetings and four (4) monthly evening meetings. I look forward to seeing you at all the meetings!

YOU COUNT! WE CARE ABOUT OUR FUTURE! Election Day is only a couple of months away. It’s essential we all vote, but with all the rhetoric how do you know what your candidates really stand for and against? The Bucks County League of Women Voters is holding two candidate forums so you can hear directly from the candidates. Both forums will be held at:

Delaware Valley University Life Science Auditorium

700 E. Butler Ave Doylestown, PA 18901 Friday, October 19, from 8-9:30AM Candidates for 1st Congressional District Brian Fitzpatrick(R) Scott Wallace (D) Steve Scheetz(L) Thursday, November 1, from 7-8:30PM 10th District Senatorial Candidates Marguerite Quinn(R) Steve Santaserio(D)

Your vote counts! October 9th is the last day to register in PA to vote November 6th.

Scholarship Fundraising Our fundraising committee has planned several events for the upcoming year that will support our scholarship funding. In May, our Branch awarded two $2,500 scholarships to deserving women who graduated from Bucks County Community College and enrolled at a four-year institution. Since our Branch achieved 501(c)3 status 18 months ago, 24 members have contributed $1778 which qualifies each donor to receive a letter for Federal tax purposes. All members are encouraged to consider writing a check to AAUW Doylestown Branch to support our scholars and enable the Branch to fulfill its Mission. Honor a friend on her birthday by making a donation of $10 or more and the Financial Officer will send an AAUW birthday card. Birthdays are listed in the membership directory. Cards can also be sent to non-members if the address and birthday are provided. This past year six members sent Happy Birthday greetings to 19 other members while contributing $285. Mah Jongg players donate their winnings that included $141.25 during the past year. Are other study groups willing to make a commitment? Watch the Forecaster for additional activities including frame-a-favorite, shopping at Ten Thousand Villages, dining at Panera’s in Warrington, Holiday raffle, silent auction and a wine tour/tasting. With your support, we will reach our fundraising goal of $5,000.

Meet, Greet, and Eat Celebrating 60 Years By Mary McCaw

Peggy George and Lois McClintock remember the second-floor community room in the Swartzlander

Building at the corner of Main and Oakland that was our meeting place in the late 1950s. It was

fitted with rows of folding chairs, hot and stuffy, and when the windows were open, the noise of

trucks passing by made it hard for speakers to be heard. Peggy recalls being amazed by a science

professor’s talk that included DNA and its findings that represented the development of molecular

biology.

In the early 1960s, one noteworthy meeting was held in a courtroom of the newly constructed

county courthouse to hear home-towner James A. Michener during his unsuccessful run for U.S.

Congress.

The Branch has had seven or eight homes in the past, but one requirement for a suitable meeting

place was that it have kitchen facilities. Post-meeting refreshments were lavish, and our pot-luck

dinners and teas always attracted members, their guests, and guests from other branches. Some

things change, but food always seems to have its appeal.

Education Topics Update AAUW Pennsylvania is not planning any education budget action alerts. If you wish to sign up for

Education Voter PA action alerts you may do so at http://educationvoterspa.org/. Briefly:

• Budget -- no indication the education budget amount will change; some talk about increases for school safety

• Senate Bill 2 -- Education Savings Accounts probably won't be voted on in the full Senate; AAUW collective advocacy worked!

• HB97 -- the bad charter bill isn't being discussed • EITC/OSTC--tax credit programs that provide scholarships (vouchers because it depletes funds to

public schools) to private/religious schools will probably have an increase in this budget. AAUW-PA will get educated on this program.

• School Code is the omnibus bill that aggregates many pieces of legislation on education-related subjects. Tricky to track because there is no telling what will be added and it is voted on so quickly. It usually contains legislation that we support, so there is the good with the bad.

• Possible HB 1198 will be included in the school code. Click here http://educationvoterspa.org/?s=1198 to see the Education Voters PA action alert.

Voting officially closed the evening of Saturday, June 9 on the three proposals for AAUW bylaws amendments

presented to the membership. In summary:

• Proposal #1 to create staggered board terms passed. Staggered terms will affect elected and appointed

AAUW Board members starting terms in 2019.

• Proposal #2 to allow non-AAUW member eligibility to Board did not meet the percentage required to

pass.

• Proposal #3 to remove the educational requirement to AAUW membership did not meet the percentage

required to pass.

We encourage branches and members to continue discussing these issues with fellow members and with valued

community stakeholders to ensure voices and ideas are shared. Because our organization is a democracy,

members may raise these proposals again, as well as other ideas for membership vote.

If you have any questions about the vote, please don’t hesitate to reach out at [email protected]. You can

also always reach the AAUW Connect team at [email protected].

Recently, Governor Tom Wolf signed an executive order ending the practice of state agencies requiring job

applicants to provide their salary history during the hiring process. When employers ask candidates about

previous wages and use the information to set pay in a new job, this practice can have major repercussions.

AAUW-PA was in attendance and Barbara Price, the Public Policy Co-Chair, spoke at the signing. AAUW-

PA was the only outside organization asked to speak. To view the ceremony:

Barbara Price.
