Childrens Religious Education We are aiming sky high for the 2012-2013 school year. As we begin another year of religious education classes, you will notice from the list of catechists and parent helpers mostly familiar names from prior years. St. Timothy's Parish School of Religion (PSR) is blessed with extraordinarily dedicated volunteers. We want to thank them for their service to the children of our parish community. We also want to welcome the catechists and helpers who are new to our program, a few of them even new to Kentucky.

There is still time to register for classes. Classes begin on September 23 and this year’s schedules can be accessed on the parish website. Contact Valerie Bresiger ([email protected] or 384-1100 ext 28) for more information. Come and join us where THE SKY IS THE LIMIT!!!

The upcoming Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI is a “summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world. ” In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion – to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. "They called the church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith." (Acts 14:27). The “door of faith” is opened at one’s baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.Source: United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (www.usccb.org)

Meet Our New Youth Ministers

The theme for this year is “BE THE CHANGE”. We will focus on the seven sacraments and how each one of them transforms us to be more like Christ. The sacraments are special moments of grace in our lives and as we deepen our understanding of these gifts we will be more open to the grace that is provided. The change that we seek is to conform ourselves more to

Christ so that the change happens within each one of us and through that change we can reach out to our world and “Be The Change” that Christ calls us to be!

All high school youth ages 13 and up are invited to join us! We meet every Sunday from 6pm-7:45pm in Brodnick Hall / Youth Room. For more info on the St.Timothy Youth Ministry (STYM), contact Tim or Paul ([email protected] or 384-1100 ext 15)

Be the Change: Setting the StageYouth 2000 Retreat! www.nkyouth.comSTYM Fun NightTrick or Treat for Canned GoodsShanty Town

I grew up in Ft. Thomas in Campbell County and graduated from Northern Kentucky University in 1994. Since graduation, I have been in the Social Work field and am currently the Program Supervisor for Kenton and Campbell County Drug Court. I supervise both courts and help felons who suffer from substance abuse and change their lives for the better and reacquaint them back into society. In 2004, my wife Joanna and I moved our family to Union, KY and became members of St. Tim’s Parish. We have three healthy and happy children: Ethan (11), Addison (7) and Harrison (5).

Once I read about the opening of Youth Minister I thought and prayed about whether I was being called to that ministry, because I always knew I needed to do something more for our Church and Parish. After careful

thought, prayer and discussion with my wife, I decided to approach Father Bolte and meet with him to see what he had in mind. When I meet with him, I had a conflict with one of the mandatory meetings he wanted the Youth Minister to attend. On Wednesdays, I could make one meeting but not the other meeting. Well, they say the Lord works in a mysterious way. Tim McGilloway could make one meeting but not the other. The Lord was calling both of us into this ministry! I am so glad that the Lord has called Tim and me into this ministry and into each other’s lives! Now I am calling all of the youth of our Parish to come and join the STYM on Sunday evenings for Faith and Fun!

Paul Dierig

Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised mainly in northern New Jersey, I relocated to the area in 2011 with my family for my job at Procter & Gamble, where I have been working for 14 years in their Global Business Services division. Judeanne and I have been married for 12 years and have four beautiful children: Matthew and Connor (identical twins, almost 11), Anna (8), and Andrew (5).

Joining Saint Tim's in March 2011 was like coming home! Judeanne and I immediately got involved the life of the parish and we love it! Judeanne attended the CRHP retreat last year, then was on the giving team in May. She is now leading The Rosary Guild for our parish. I am an active member of the men's prayer group (I highly recommend this great group of men!), teach in

our PSR program, and was recently trained as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist. I am so excited about leading STYM with Paul Dierig! We have already had several great meetings and a very successful kickoff meeting with almost 50 youth! Youth ministry has a very special place in my heart since it was in high school that I really learned to have a relationship with Jesus and I hope to do the same for our high school students!

The transformation of the church’s lower parking lot into a yard sale “Miracle Mile” is something to behold. In a nine hour time span, it transforms from an empty lot, to one of 73 shopping spots traveled by thousands of bargain hunters all looking for that hidden treasure and back to an empty lot once again. While it may

seem like it all happens with the twitch of the nose or the waving of a magic wand, in the real world, that isn’t so. There are months of planning – filling vendor spaces, table orders, publicity, pricing donations, numbering parking spaces, setting up tents, tables, lining up volunteers, creating volunteer schedules, marking the grounds for parking, shopping for food, etc…. before the day begins for the volunteers at 6am. Then there is the day itself where nothing stands still, no one is idle. Yes, it is a lot of work, but we do it, and sometimes we even complain about it when things don’t go exactly right, but we continue to do it

by Lesley Duggan, Director of OutreachYard Sale Success for St. Charles Academy

year after year. Why? Because we know that our time spent in the planning and on the day itself, in the August heat, is little compared to what the children of St. Charles Academy endure every day. We do it because God blesses us with the gift of our abilities to make a difference. And to show our gratitude for His blessings, we share them for the good of others.

Without the gift of volunteers who choose to share their gifts of time and talent for the good of the children of St. Charles Academy, those children deemed the ‘throw-away’ kids, St. Timothy parish would not be able to make such a difference in the lives of the 190 students who, with our support, will have a better life through their education.

Thank you to those who supported this year’s sale through volunteering, planning or shopping the yard sale’s “Miracle Mile”. Because of your participation St. Charles will receive $7,306! Thank you for sharing your blessing so that others canbe blessed.

The 28 Seminarians for our Diocese are preparing, through prayer, education and service to others, to become the future priests of our Diocese. As the Lord called them to serve, so too are we called to support them on their journey. Estimated Diocesan cost for providing our seminarians with tuition, books, room and board, health insurance, living allowances and retreats for the coming year will amount to over $1.1 million. Our parish tithe for October will be sent to the Diocese for the Seminarian Education Fund. Please pray daily for our seminarians and for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. St. Timothy Parish will be “adopting” certain days during October, Respect Life Month, for parishioners to participate in a 24-hour peaceful, prayerful vigil outside of the local Planned Parenthood abortion facility in Cincinnati. Please prayerfully consider volunteer-ing one or more hours with your fellow parishioners to witness for life. If you are unable to go to Planned Parenthood to witness, please support those who are going with your prayers. There will also be an opportunity for your commitment to prayer throughout the campaign. For more information, please read the parish bulletin and visit www.40daysforlife.com/cincinnati.

by Dave ProfittOctober is Respect Life month. It’s a shame that we have to have a month specific to respecting life since it should be on our minds at all times. We must be careful however not to put the concept of respecting life in too narrow of a view. We often think of abortion or euthanasia when we think of respecting life. I wonder how often we think of the needs of the poor as a component of respecting life. It applies to so many aspects of our lives and I’m afraid that our culture has made it more difficult than ever.

I believe that much of this cultural interfer-ence began when we allowed the government to take over caring for the poor. The safety net that President Lyndon Johnson put in place instead became an excuse for us not to be involved. For generations, the responsibility of feeding the poor fell on our shoulders. The Catholic Church has long been involved in caring for those who are in need. We’ve institu-tionalized that care and now we face the results of putting the responsibility on some-one else’s shoulders. The bill is now due in more ways than one. No government can ever show the same compassion and caring that individuals can. No government can bring a sense of hope to people that a caring person can. Instead, we have created an entitlement society and the results are a shocking lack of compassion from individuals. It is time to take back our responsibility and bring the Good News to the poor and disenfranchised of our nation. A hand up now has become a handout and in order to fix this problem, we have to get involved.

It would be easy to place all of this in the context of fiscal responsibility. It’s true that we can’t afford it anymore as a nation. The future generations of this country are going to be saddled with a debt that no one can pay. The punitive nature of poor fiscal policy has placed a severe strain on an already overtaxed populace. What’s even more troubling is the punitive nature

Our Responsibility to Respect Life in All Phases that poor morals play in the future of America.

Already in two states, Washington and Oregon, we have legalized euthanasia of the elderly. It’s absolutely stunning to me that it’s okay in America to perform “mercy killings”. Where do mercy and killing ever go together? I guess the concept of redemptive suffering hasn’t made it to that part of the country yet. Nowhere are we promised that our lives will be without suffering here on earth. Our reward for living a life of faith is not in this life but in the next. There is value that is beyond knowing when we offer up our suffering for the redemption of others.

It would be easy to turn this into a referen-dum on the upcoming election. It is not the duty of the Church to tell you who to vote for. As a matter fact, it’s a quick way to lose your status as a chari-table organization and don’t you know the current culture would love to see the Church lose that status. Instead, it is our responsibility to know the issues and know how they apply in our lives and even more importantly how they apply to our lives as Catholics in the world today. It’s important we read the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship”, which can be downloaded at www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithful-citizenship/

Respect life means life in all phases and should not be limited to just abortion and euthanasia. It means that we see the glory of God in all people we encounter. It means we shoulder the responsibility for those in need and we must always be aware of our opportu-nities to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. Vote your conscience this November, vote your faith but most of all, vote.

This fall, our community will be uniting with other cities across North America and around the world for a massive coordinated pro-life mobilization – the 40 Days for Life campaign from September 26 - November 4, 2012. People of faith are praying that, with God’s help, this effort will help bring an end to the tragedy of abortion. 40 Days for Life is a focused pro-life campaign that has generated measurable lifesaving results in more than 440 cities where it has been implemented. Some locations have reported as much as a 28% drop in local abortion numbers and hundreds of new people getting involved in local lifesav-ing ministry efforts.

The three components that make up the 40 Days for Life campaign are:

• Prayer and Fasting: inviting people of faith throughout our city to join together for 40 days of fervent prayer and fasting for an end to abortion

• Peaceful Vigil: standing for life through a 40-day peaceful public witness outside of Planned Parenthood,

2314 Auburn Avenue in Cincinnati• Community Outreach: help take a

positive, upbeat pro-life message to every corner of our city through media efforts, advocacy, and public visibility

As Catholic/Christians we are called to work toward creating a culture of life, a future worthy of the human person as a child of God. The United States Catholic Conference of Bishop dedicates the Month of October as Respect Life Month and encourages all Catholics to spend time praying and educating ourselves about the attacks on human life that have become more prevalent and blatant in our country since the infamous ruling of Roe vs. Wade in 1973.

Here are just a few of the facts: We now have two states, Oregon and Washington, where assisted suicide is legal. Embryonic Stem Cell research is being funded by our tax dollars. Female surgical sterilizations and abortifacient birth control pills will now be freely available under our government’s new health care law. Our own Catholic institutions must comply with this mandate from the HHS, even though this coercive federal policy tramples upon our religious liberty. But here is the good news!

• For the first time, over 50% of people in the United States consider themselves pro-life, including the majority of young people who proclaim a pro-life stance.

• More and more women are choosing life for their babies.

• The number of adoptions is inching up. • There are almost twice as may pregnancy help

centers than abortion facilities throughout the United States, which accounts for the number of abortions steadily decreasing (still 3000+ each

and every day).

We must continue our vigilance and our steadfastness in protecting the sanctity of life in our families and community. St. Timothy’s parish will once again provide opportunities for parishioners to pray, to act, and to learn, beginning with Respect Life Sunday on October 7 at our own parish, to our coming together as the Diocese of Covington for the annual Pro-life Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of the Assumption with Bishop Foys on Tuesday, October 2. St. Timothy Parish will once again conduct our annual Baby Shower to benefit various pregnancy centers and agencies in our community who provide help to women who have chosen life for their babies. There will be an opportunity for parishioners to participate with the baby shower, as well as help make baby blankets that will be included in our Baby Shower gift bags. Please read the bulletin for more information about Respect Life Month.

Archbishop Charles Chaput once said that the biggest lie of the modern age is that individuals can’t make a difference. But it is exactly individuals who do make a difference…..Men and women who refuse to cooperate with evil and insist on doing good. Now, more than ever, we need your help in building a culture of life and making a difference in our homes, our churches and in our world!

This outreach was "born" out of a grant project with HealthPoint several years ago. The tradition continues to assist many mothers-to-be, and help them celebrate the arrival of their new babies. Our baby shower now provides “baby gifts” to mothers in need at several agencies that support life. These agencies include, New Hope Center, CareNet Pregnancy Center, the Rose Garden Mission as well as Health Point Family Care.

Gift bags for 100 moms-to-be will be assembled from baby items donated by parishioners. Gift tags including items such as diapers, diaper wipes, baby washcloths and

School Theme for 2012-2013: “Shine on, We are all One”

From the Principal’s Deskby: Kathy Russell, St. Paul School

Each month, St. Paul School has a “Religious Pep Rally” celebrating a particular theme, Bible passages, classroom activities, whole school activities, outreach benefactor, etc. Our students are able to be true witnesses of their faith and celebrate the joy of being Catholic. Here is what is planned for 2012-2013:

On Pep Rally Days you will hear a contemporary song that helps “rev” everybody up for the rally and goes along with that month’s theme. Some of the songs are “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, “Help” by the Beatles, “Baby” by Justin Bieber, etc. Each class will wear t-shirts with the school theme and class color.

Parents can be involved too!• Join in on the fun on the designated days at 8:00 am in the school gym.• After a Pep Rally, ask your child what Beacon is being celebrated for that month.• Ask your child how they would respond to some of the month’s thought-provoking questions. Would you like to be proudest of your accomplishments or your character?

If you had the means, how would you address the problem of homelessness? What has been the most spiritual experience of your life? Have you ever stood up for something you thought was right?

If any parent would like to review this year’s “Shine On, We All Are One” book, please stop by the school office. The teachers worked very hard this past summer writing the curriculum for this year’s theme. Special thanks to the teacher chairperson, Celia Middendorf, who organized this project.

The theme for the 2012-2013 school year is “Rejoice in the Lord Always.” This will be proclaimed during our school masses, retreats, prayer services and brought into action during our everyday pursuits. It is our goal to help each person grow spiritually, academically, physically and emotionally. We are a commu-nity of 116 Freshmen, 139 Sophomores, 104 Juniors, 133 Seniors and 52 staff members. We believe that we will accomplish more success, joy and fulfillment as a faith community than as individuals working alone.

St. Henry District High School has been recognized as a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School!! We were recognized in the first perfor-mance category-“Exemplary High Performing School.” Schools in this category are recog-nized among their state’s highest performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally-normed tests. Of the 269 public and private elementary, middle, and high schools honored, SHDHS was one of only six private high schools in the nation to be recognized this year. St. Henry representatives will travel to Washington DC in November to accept the award.

In September, SHDHS hosted the kickoff to continued on page 9

St. Timothy Preschool and Kindergarten began the new school year with a new friend---Gallagher the Giraffe! Gallagher’s name means, “eager giver” and he has many charac-teristics which we will use as character build-ing lessons with our young students. Galla-gher will teach us about family, sharing, being helpful, prayer, friendship, patience and manners. Each month, we will focus on a different concept and our Service Learning Project for each month will also reinforce our monthly theme from Gallagher. By using Galla-gher, we are introducing the children to impor-tant concepts and teaching that at the heart of all that we do is service.

Gallagher is part of each child’s morning/afternoon circle time and in the kindergarten class, Gallagher takes a trip home with each student. While the kindergarten student has the stuffed giraffe at home, he/she is writing and drawing about where Gallagher goes and what he sees at their house. This is a

great sharing opportunity for our young students and they are all learning that Galla-gher is helping us to Stand Tall and Learn it All, which is our theme for this school year!

This month, our students are learning about family through reading books, drawing pictures, and learning that God is a special part of their family. As part of learning about our families, we are beginning our Babies, Bottles and Blessings Service Learning Project. Each class will listen to “The Berenstain Bears have a Baby” and then each class will talk about all the items that a baby needs. After brainstorming about what a baby needs, each class will generate a list to take home and we will collect baby items to donate to the parish baby

collection. This is such a great opportunity for our little ones to learn about family and to give back to another part of their family—our parish! Everything donated by the preschool families and students will be given to the St. Timothy Outreach Baby Collection and will leave here to help many. We will take any extra donations to The Rose Garden Mission. Stay tuned each month for more information on Gallagher and what he is teaching our preschool and kindergarten students!

Whenever you share your gifts to help others, it is a sign of your love for your Father and your gratefulness for His many blessings. Diocesan Parish Annual Appeal Ministries bring the love and hope of Christ to thousands of your sisters and brothers. Because of your generosity, DPAA ministries can continue to bring the light and love of Jesus Christ to those who turn to the Church for assistance.

Thanks to our generous donors, we finally made our goal. We would like to have higher participation from our parish so do not think it is too late to make a pledge. Any funds received in excess of our parish goal will be used at St.Timothy Parish and is not subject to the diocesan assessment on contributions. Please com-plete a pledge card or contact the parish office. Pledge reminders are mailed on the 15th of the month. Please make your payment promptly.

I graduated from Boone County High School which is where I met my husband, Dave. We have been married 31 years , have two sons, Nick and Alex, and will soon be grandparents. Dave and I were raised in the Baptist faith and joined the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil at St. Pius in 1994. We have been members of St. Timothy Parish since 1998. I’ve been involved in a number of ministries here at the Parish including the Rosary Guild, Christ Renews His Parish, and RCIA Program. Dave is in diaconate training, serves as the RCIA coordinator at St.Timothy, and is a columnist for the Companion. I’m looking forward to working with the people of the Parish in assisting with their needs.

The parish office is now open every weekday from 8:30am - 4:30pm.

Although we have not received enough DPAA pledges for a rebate project, we would still like to add a new set of Stations of the Cross to the church. Sample designs are displayed in the Gathering Space. The estimated cost is $18,000-$25,000. Donations are being accepted and may be sent to St. Timothy Parish. Please list it as a “restricted gift for the Stations of the Cross.”

Runners and walkers of all ages and skill, 140 in all, took off from the parish entrance on US42 and continued for 5K through Union on a mild Saturday evening. There was also a spirited race behind the stage for younger runners at the Kids Fun Run. It’s never too early to start training for next year! Results: www.runningtime.net/Races/st_timothy/home.htm

On the weekend of September 14-16, Oktoberfest festivities were in full swing for our 11th annual parish festival. It was a great time to work together, play together, and bring the

community to St. Timothy Parish. There was something for everyone: live music, great food and drinks, raffles, rides, games, mechanical bull, 5K Run/Walk and Kids Fun Run.

Jim Zdinak has managed the facility aspects of Oktoberfest for the past few years. He shared these thoughts on Facebook. One year ago, I suffered a heart attack while working at our church festival. This past weekend, I ran our festival's 5K race and finished in a respectable 34:10. Yea really slow for a 5K but it was my first one and my fastest time by over 3 minutes. Just thankful that I can even run today and so very thankful for all of the prayers and support my family and I have received over the past year. Thank you. God is truly good.

Julie and Ronny Bass were the high bidders for the Oktoberfest Fun Package at the 2012 Dinner Dance & Auction. The package included t-shirts, mugs, Oktoberfest cash tickets, ride bracelets, parking pass, officiating the "tapping of the keg", and photo coverage of a fun Saturday evening with their daughters.
