How does t he f lu spread?Most people get sick by breathing in the tiny droplets made when someone sick sneezes or coughs. A person can also get sick if they touch something with the flu virus on it and then touch their nose, mouth, or eyes. The flu virus can live on some surfaces for up to 48 hours.

Flu season last s f rom Oct ober t o Apr i l , how can I prevent get t ing sick?The most important step is to get the annual flu shot vaccine. The vaccine takes about two weeks to be effective, so get the vaccine as early as possible. Even if the flu season has started, it is not too late to get vaccinated. Other preventative measures are:

- Frequent hand-washing with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when hand-washing is not an option.

- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing or sneezing. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow.

- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.- Clean surfaces with a household

disinfectant.- Avoid or limit interactions with infected

persons.

How do I know if I have t he f lu?While the flu is a respiratory illness, the whole body reflects symptoms which may include high fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle of body aches, headaches, and extreme exhaustion.

How do I t reat t he f lu?If you think you have the flu, contact your primary care provider (PCP) - especially if you are at high risk for complications. Your PCP will determine treatment such as:

- Antiviral medications. Taken within the first two days of showing symptoms, these prescription drugs can lessen symptoms and shorten the time you are sick.

- Pain and fever-reducing medications and nasal decongestants. If you are treating a sick child, always consult with the child's PCP before medicating.

- Rest and drink plenty of fluids.

The flu can suddenly worsen, which is why it is so important to have a PCP who knows you and your medical history. Your PCP can let you know what symptoms to be concerned about, and when a situation requires immediate medical care. Except for seeking medical care, stay home to avoid infecting others.

Cups of applesauce are practical and portable, but the snack

is loaded with natural and added sugars that promote

cavities. Try a small container of cottage cheese instead. To

spice things up, you can toss on some blueberries or sliced

strawberries for extra flavor!

2. Choose real f ru itFruit snacks and fruit leathers are popular among kids, but

not their dentists. These sticky snacks can cling to teeth and encourage plaque. Go for the real deal instead.

Offer slices of banana, apple and strawberries, or try no-prep options like grapes and mandarin oranges.

3. Plain m ilk is bestMilk is a great source of calcium, but flavored options, like chocolate or strawberry milk, contain added sugars

that can cause decay. Swap out these sweet options with plain milk to cut out unnecessary sugar. To make plain

milk more fun, you can try adding a drop of food coloring. If your kids don?t like milk, string cheese is another

good dairy option.

4. Sk ip t he st archy snacksSalty snacks like pretzels, chips and crackers may seem OK for teeth because they?re low in sugar, but don?t be

mistaken. Simple starches can be just as bad as sweets, if not worse. These snacks break down into a sticky goo,

coating teeth and causing cavities. Looking for some crunchy alternatives? Try sunflower seeds, almonds or baby

carrots. Other savory snack ideas include hard-boiled eggs and chunks of cheddar cheese.

5. Choose color fu l veget ablesGive your kids an assortment of colorful veggies. Kids are more likely to eat snacks that look appealing, and the

different colors feature different vitamins and minerals. Red and orange veggies are usually high in vitamin C

(good for gums), while leafy green vegetables are good sources of calcium (for strong teeth). Consider cherry

tomatoes, strips of red and orange bell peppers and steamed broccoli with melted cheese. Don?t forget about

fun-to-eat snacks like snap peas and edamame.

Ingredients

- 1 can of black beans (15 oz)- 1/ 2 cup of frozen corn- 1 cup grated cheese- 1 tsp cumin- 1/ 4 tsp garlic powder- 1/ 4 tsp salt- Corn tortillas

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. 2. M ix the beans, corn, cheese, cumin, garlic powder,

and salt in a bowl. 3. Heat up tortillas in the microwave, placing them

between two damp paper towels to maintain their flexibility.

4. Fill each tortilla with a few tablespoons of the mixture and roll up tightly. Secure with toothpick if needed.

5. Place taquitos on a baking tray covered with foil. 6. Spritz taquitos with olive oil. 7. Cook until golden brown (10 - 15 minutes).
