At the end of June, on a pleasant Sunday afternoon was theTimsbury v Michelmersh cricket match. The HallCommittee served tea in the hall, with a delicious selectionof homemade cakes. It was good to see people sit in thegarden and enjoy not only the cricket, but a cup of tea aswell – how English does it get?….July brought Fun Day – or the Village Fete. This is whenVillage organisations join Timsbury Preschool to make asocial occasion. Now with practice from the previous month, even more homemade cakes were produced and the ‘Hall’had the kettle on again for tea. It was hot, and we probablyserved as many cold drinks as hot. But it all added to Hallfunds. Our third fund-raiser of the summer was The Village BBQ,in August. This year was a little different. From the start itwas to be a proper ‘Village’ BBQ with the funds raised beingshared between the 2 churches and the Jubilee Hall.Representatives of all three groups were involved withorganising, cooking and clearing up – a real team effort, thanks to you all, you know who you are. 130 peopleattended, which may be a record, the weather was kind andthe chefs were on top form – so a good evening wasenjoyed by all. The raffle was, as always well supported, with both ticket purchasing and gift donating. At the end ofthe evening £1006 was shared between St Mary’s, StAndrew’s and the Jubilee Hall – must be another record.Looking forward – we are having two Film Evenings, withthe help of Moviola, the company who show films atRomsey Town Hall. On Friday 11 October, it is The GreatGatsby and on Friday 22 November Promised Land. Seeadvertisements on page 14 for details. On Saturday 4 Jan2014 Forest Forge Theatre Company bring us Anne ofGreen Gables, their Christmas Show. This is always wellsupported, so make a note to order tickets, at the end ofNovember. Tickets for all events may be ordered [email protected]

CANTATRICE AT ST MARY'S

Harvest Festival this year is being put back by a week, as we have a wedding on the weekendwhen it would normally be. Thus, in a change to our regular pattern, Harvest Thanksgiving willbe at 6pm on Sunday 6th October.

Clarissa Smith has indicated that she would like to step down as our treasurer. If there issomeone out there, with a degree of ability in bookkeeping, and who would feel able to help, then we would all be very grateful to hear from you.During the summer we have been busy and successful in fundraising at various events. Most

recently, church members have been providing the teas at The Island, Greatbridge, when the gardens were openfor the National Gardens Scheme.Recently the PCC re-affirmed its adherence to the Winchester Diocese churchyard regulations. These basically saywhat sort of monuments and memorials are allowed in churchyards locally. (It varies around the country, dependingon what the local stone is.) If you are in the position of installing a memorial stone, both the local stonemasons thatpeople usually use are aware of the rules. The PCC members are aware that this whole issue is a very sensitive one, however.

ST. ANDREW’S CHURCH TIMSBURY

In the evening of the 28th June over 100 people enjoyed the hospitality of John and Fran Drake. They toured thefarm on trailers pulled by tractors whilst John gave a commentary on what was seen. Fields containing cows andsheep were visited, but for the young children the highlight must surely have been seeing the new born calves.Afterwards there was a tasty barbeque. Thanks to the generosity of John and Fran together with their sponsorsSCATS,Burges Salmon,Kite and LKL a goodly sum of money was raised for St Mary’s Bell Restoration Fund.

Day off Friday

Begin with the end in mind

In his book The seven habits of highly effective people Stephen Covey emphasises the need to begin withthe end in mind.

He illustrates this by suggesting that in your mind’s eye you picture yourself at your own funeral service in 3year’s time! Your family, friends, work colleagues and church members are present to honour you. In theservice, four people each give a brief eulogy about you – someone from your close family, a friend, a workcolleague and a church member.Covey poses the question: ‘what would you expect each one to say about you?’ and then ‘what would youlike each of the speakers to say about you and your life?’

He then presents a powerful challenge: you now have 3 years to work towards being the person you want tobe remembered as! Now is the time to change your priorities and to become that person before it is too late. What is true for individuals is also true for churches.

What would people say of our local church communities today? What would you want people to say?

Since I’ve been here as Rector I’ve continually encouraged people to think about ‘vision’. To have vision is tohave a view of the future as God wants it and as God can make it. Vision sees beyond the present and itsrealities to the future and its possibilities. It means having a clear God-given sense of direction and purpose, coupled with a commitment to complete the journey. The visionary Christian is one who appreciates thepast, lives in the present but thinks in the future

Vision is vital for leadersA key role of those in leadership is having a vision then sustaining it. A leader is someone who influencesothers, inspires them towards vision, and enables them to fulfil their potential.

Lack of vision can lead to initiative overloadWhen you lack a clear sense of purpose and direction, you can fall into the trap of just busily doing things. You are not sure why you are doing them but you just think you should do something! It’s been said “a visionwithout a task is a dream, a task without a vision is drudgery but the two together are the hope of the world.”

Outreach is central to what we are about as local churchesFundamental to the Christian church is the communication of the good news of Jesus Christ in the power ofthe Holy Spirit by deed and word. We need to be committed to doing this sensitively and effectively in ourparishes.

The President of the Coca Cola Company between 1922 & 1955 had this vision “that no-one on the face ofthe earth should die without having tasted Coca Cola.” That’s a big vision! But in the Christian gospel wehave something far bigger than Cocoa Cola for people to taste! ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good.’(Psalm 34 : 8)

MICHELMERSH AND TIMSBURY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYThe 2013 Annual Show was held on the evening ofMonday 8th July. That popular judge Chris Bird, a muchexperienced lecturer at Sparsholt College was onceagain invited to judge Society’s show. The college wasset up by the Hampshire County Council in 1899 andoffers a wide variety of horticultural degrees. Chris isalways a most welcome visitor and painstakinglyexamined the various classes of entries in the showwhilst many of the 40 members present collectedoutside the hall to watch the careful weighing of entriesin the “Potato in a Bucket” class. These were beingrevealed from their containers by John and Richard Huntwhilst Peta Hunt meticulously recorded the weight ofeach entry, the weighing being ably assisted by BobBone. The gift of a bag of Potato Crisps went to thewinner Richard Hunt!Members gathered in the hall once the weighing wascompleted to both hear Chris Bird’s experienced viewson the entries and his choice of winners. Hecongratulated members on the abundance of entries butwhilst judging with humour he was not reluctant tocriticise and give his reasons for one or two that did notcome up to standard! The Lady Newton Cup for the best flowers he awardedto Ann Dowland whilst the Mrs Helie de Cailly Cup forvegetables was shared between Jill Mansbridge & JohnChambers. The best in show picture awards for flowers andvegetables went to Marj Donahue and the annualphotographic contest for “My Favourite Flower(s)”wentto Anna Hunt.

The Harvey Children’s Cup for ‘under 7 year olds’ at theFun Day went to Matt Wall.

A beautiful summer’s evening on the 23rd July, enable25 members to enjoy an interesting tour of the GreggSchool garden in the grounds of Townhill Park House. We were welcomed by Rosaleen Wilkinson who is headgardener but a volunteer. She gave us a potted historyof the house (built in 1790) and all it’s owners in one ofthe beautiful rooms. The gardens were designed byGertrude Jekyll in 1912 and the bones remain.Unfortunately due to the ravages of deer and rabbits theplanting is not authentic! Rosaleen can only plant thingsthey won’t eat. The garden had fallen into a state ofdereliction until it was rescued by The Friends ofTownhill Park House. Now it is absolutely lovely and acredit to all the hard work put in by the volunteers. Afterthe tour we enjoyed refreshments and looked at manyphotographs of the garden being restored. A magicalevening which we all enjoyed. - Peta Hunt

After the summer break Society events will restart with atalk on Monday 9th September “The Search, Selection,Trial & Introduction of new, rare and unusual plants” byKevin Hobbs a senior grower and plantsman at HilliersNurseries followed by a members competition for thebest “Jug of Flowers”. On Monday 14th October JohnBaker will describe the care and cultivation of ‘LovelyLillies’.

PARISH COUNCILPlanningThe Parish Council has reviewed a number ofplanning applications during the last two months. The Council considers all planning applications fordevelopments in the parish and reports to TestValley Borough Council or Hampshire CountyCouncil (on applications relating to minerals orwaste) who determine the applications.

Planning ApplicationsThe Parish Council raised no objections to thefollowing planning application:

13/01151/ FULLS Proposal: Single Storey rear extensionincluding a replacement garden shed. Site: 4 Waterworks Cottages, New Road,Timsbury.

13.01087/CLPSInstallation of a grid-connected solar

photovoltaic system on roof of dwelling.Site: Havencroft, Stockbridge Road, Timsbury

Decisions on previous planning applications arerecorded in the Parish Council minutes or can befound on the Test Valley Borough or HampshireCounty Council websites.

Proposed Gypsy Site - Bridle View,Stockbridge RoadAn application for a gypsy pitch on land off ManorLane was refused by Test Valley Borough Councilin January, and the applicant has appealedagainst that decision. The Appeal will be heard ata Public Inquiry at Crosfield Hall, Romsey on 29th

October 2013. The Parish Council will support theLower Timsbury Residents Association in makingrepresentations to the Inquiry, opposing thedevelopment. Parishioners are encouraged toattend the Inquiry.

Community Issues

New LengthsmanMr. Richard Wheeler has been appointed as thenew Village Lengthsman. He has been trimmingback nettles and brambles along several of thevillage footpaths. He is scheduled to clear the restof the pathways during August.

Community Pay Back SchemeBob Davis and I, with Kath Davis representing theJubilee Hall Committee, met with Sharon Annell

from the Probation Service 'Community PayBack'Scheme to discuss potential projects. Theseincluded repainting the lines on the Jubilee HallCar Park, decorating the Jubilee Hall toilets, general gardening tasks, work in the ‘Pocket Park’and refurbishing benches. This seems to be anopportunity for the Parish Council and villageorganisations to have work done at very modestcost, whilst giving work experience and a chanceof developing new skills to people who have beensentenced to a Community Order.Any suggestions for tasks that could usefully becarried out by an organised (and supervised) team,or any comment on the Scheme (perhaps basedon experience of making use of it, not necessarilyfrom direct involvement!) would be welcome.

Housing Needs SurveyAt June's Parish Council meeting, CatherineKirkham and Charlotte Bassett gave acomprehensive presentation of HARAH(Hampshire Alliance for Rural Affordable Housing). The presentation outlined the aims and benefits ofTVBC conducting a housing needs survey onbehalf of the Parish Council to establish the needfor affordable housing in the parish.

If a need was established, the parish could decideto promote an affordable housing scheme. Thedecision would depend on a suitable site beingavailable, and on general approval from the parishfor such a development. Only people with localconnections would be able to occupy these houses.

The Parish Council will be calling a public meetingto discuss the issue further with parishionersduring the autumn. Date to follow.
