On July 14 th Soke Kubota hosted seminars at IKA Headquarters in Glendale, California. Seminars on kata, kumite, Kubojitsu, and Kubotan were taught. In attendance were students from Poland, New Zealand, and Mexico. Attendance was fantastic and the seminars were all very “high energy” and were enjoyed by all. Soke would like to thank all those that attended and also to all the instructors and staff that assisted in making this event possible. As the All Star Tournament has been discontinued in Los Angeles, Soke is planning on having the seminar as an annual event. It is an especially good deal for students as the seminar fees include one week of unlimited training at IKA Headquarters. Hope to see you all next year!!! UPCOMING TOURNAMENT AND SEMINAR IN UKRAINE Soke is planning on going to Sumy, Ukraine on October 12-14, 2018 to teach seminars and to oversee the IKA Tournament that will be hosted by host Shihan Dai Anatoliy Lozovoy. It has been over five years since Soke last travelled to Ukraine. The trip is still in the planning stages. We will release more information as plans become finalized. You can contact Shihan Dai Lozovoy at his email for more information at: [email protected] SOKE HONORED AT THE NISEI WEEK PARADE On August 12 th , Soke was honored at the annual Nisei Week Parade. NIKKEI GAMES TOURNAMENT On August 5th the annual Nikkei Games Karate Tournament was held. This event is co-hosted by several dojos in the Southern California area including IKA Headquarters. It is a fantastic event which is held at the Long Beach Pyramid. It is about the same size as the Luxor Pyramid shaped hotel in Las Vegas and is big enough to host the Budo tournament which is a karate, kendo, and judo tournament being held at the same time in the same room. An amazing site to see and the only event like it in the entire world. Thank you to all the volunteers that made this event possible. Osu! MASTERS FORUM The Masters Forum is dedicated to increasing the knowledge of the IKA Family. Each month we will try to cover a new topic on a multitude of facets of the art. This month Kyoshi Kuratomi has written an article titled:

What Have You Done for Karate Lately? Traditionally, karate was only taught to the chosen few that were able to be prove that they were worthy to be taught karate. This often times meant being assigned to clean the dojo for weeks or months without a single karate lesson being taught to the prospective student as a test of worthiness. The assignment of cleaning was to test if the person had a responsible character and the proper temperament. Teaching karate to someone that had anger management issues, were bullies, were unable to demonstrate dedication, or would use karate for criminal activity had to be weeded out. After all, if one of our primary rules was to build character, teaching a thug or irresponsible person karate was to put a lethal weapon in his or her hands that could be used for evil purposes. Traditionally, in Japan the students are responsible for cleaning not only the karate dojo but in any school or place of learning. This includes the bathrooms. It is part of the character building process that teaches humility. In karate, we call this, “Soji”. In the Japanese culture, teaching is among the most highly revered professions. It did not matter if you taught grade school, tea ceremony, flower arranging, or martial arts. Teachers or “Senseis” are given the utmost respect because they shape society for the better. The translation of “Sensei” is “one who was born before”. This means one that started learning or training in a particular discipline or study prior to the student. After many years of dedicated training and teaching the person earns the highly respected title of “Sensei”. In this day and age, children and many adult students consider their training a right, not a privilege because they pay for their training. The fact is that most teachers and assistant instructors are not paid and the money paid by the student goes to pay for the overhead like rent, utilities, and insurance. Teaching is done voluntarily as a way to give back to the art and to propagate karate for future generations. After all, if there are no karate students that are dedicated enough to become eventually

become Senseis there will be no future instructors and no future karateka. Karate would eventually become a lost art.

We recently hosted a karate tournament. We were struggling to find volunteers to help do the timekeeping and scorekeeping so we asked a junior black belt that was high school age if she would assist with scorekeeping. She refused. We had to remind her that volunteers and helpers in the past enabled her to become a black belt and to compete in the past and it was now her turn to help. She finally relented and reluctantly agreed to help. As a student of karate, helping out is an essential part of our development. We owe it to our dojo, our instructors, and to ourselves to help out in any way possible. This is one of the primary ways we develop our character. We have to learn how to give more than we receive. In this day and age of materialism and self-centeredness, this lesson is often lost or overlooked.

A wise person once said, “The real test of a person’s character is to see how a person treats those that can do nothing for them in the future”. In karate, we strive to be a person that treats all persons with respect and dignity regardless of what that person can do for us. This character trait is developed in the dojo through the teachings and practice of respect and discipline. As karate students and teachers, we must constantly think of what we can do to help our dojo and instructors. The one that really receives the benefit of helping is not so much the dojo and the instructor but rather the student whose character is built in the process. This also builds a good work ethic and discipline which is invaluable in life outside of the dojo. Hence, karate is not just something we do. It is something we are. It is a way of life that carries into everything we do both inside the dojo and out. Karate-Do is “the way of karate”. This refers to living life with karate as a guiding influence to attain spiritual and character improvement. Karate-do permeates all aspects of our lives if we practice it correctly. For the upper black belt ranks, character is as much a factor in promotion as is technical skill and ability. As a black belt, you must be an example to your students, not only with your skill but more importantly with your attitude. It is no coincidence that the title of “Hanshi” means “model”. So, what have you done for your dojo and instructor lately? If you are not helping, you are hampering your own development as a karateka.…...

“In the old days we trained Karate as a martial art, but now they train Karate as a gymnastic sport. I think we must avoid treating Karate as a sport – it must be a martial art at all times! Your fingers and the tips of your toes must be like arrows, your arms must be like iron. You have to think that if you kick, you try to kick the enemy dead. If you punch, you must thrust to kill. If you strike, then you strike to kill the enemy. This is the spirit you need in order to progress in your training.” – Choshin Chibana
