September & October 2018

Dear Highlawn, Thank you for welcoming my family and myself into your fellowship. I would also like to express my gratitude for the overwhelming amount of support I have received in the past few days. I am excit-ed to take these next steps with you in ministering to the people of St. Albans.

Highlawn’s foundation was built on the Christian virtues of generosity, fami-ly, and compassion. Ours is a church that was known for both proclaiming and displaying the Gospel. It forged people that just lived next to each other into truly becoming neighbors. It brought strangers to St. Albans and to Christ into a fellow-ship with open hearts. For many of us, it became our Spiritual home. Highlawn stands as proof that a local church is not built from a desire to entertain or be entertained. We grow through coming together to love God by worshipping Him “in Spirit and in truth,.” “loving our neighbors as ourselves,” and “loving one another.” In the next few weeks, we will continue to build on this incredible legacy by deepening our relationship with those whose life circumstances has caused them to be unable to take part in our fellowship as well as building new connections with those living just outside of our walls. To that end, I ask that you would please keep the office updated on those of our members who are facing difficult times so that we may respond to their needs quickly. I would also encourage each of you that have a heart for our com-munity, to become an active part of the incredible work being done by our Ministry Teams. God has blessed each of us with gifts, talents, creativity, and hope. In the coming weeks, take time to speak with our deacon ministry and our Sunday School teachers to help connect you with a team and grow deeper by being the hands and feet of Christ. Do not let your blessings sit idle. Be part of the work of Highlawn. Lastly, as your pastor I ask that you pray and pray fervently for the minis-tries of our church. We have an exciting time ahead for joining together in “knowing Christ and making Christ known.” We are working to equip and encour-age our brothers and sisters to love God with their whole heart, to grow through sharing His Word with our members, to love others in Christ’s name, and to share the Gospel with those across the aisle, across the street, and around the world. We need God’s guidance and power to meet the challenges ahead. Nevertheless, our church has faced many insurmountable obstacles before and God has always led us to victory. May we always be as faithful. Love God – Share His Word – Love Others – Spread the Gospel “Know Christ and Make Christ Known.” Yours in Fellowship, Pastor Jason

-On Prayer

A few weeks ago, I gave a brief talk on this topic to our Men’s fellowship. I was asked to make this information available so that others could be encouraged by this simple yet profound gift of God, the ability to talk directly to Him. I hope this information will be a blessing that you can share with your families and discuss with your group fellowships. – Pastor Jason

We take a great amount of time everyday to communicate with family, friends, and coworkers. But many of us let countless opportunities slip away for the simple act of talking to God. Sometimes it is because we feel unsuited or unworthy. Sometimes it is because we have not bal-anced the time in our day. However, flowery language or lengthy prepa-ration is not necessary. God has gone to extraordinary lengths to develop a close, personal relationship with you. As our Heavenly Father, He wants to hear from you just as an earthly parent would want to hear from their beloved child. A daily devotional time is an essential part of Christian discipleship. I rec-ommend beginning by taking a moment to relax and reflect on the day you have just experienced. Think about what you are thankful for (what you have been blessed by or any life victories given to you), what you may have a need for, any struggles you need strength and guidance for, your frustrations, and any temptations that may be presenting themselves. Then take those joys and concerns to God in a time of prayer. It is also helpful to include a time of deliberate scripture reading. After you finish your selected passage, think about how what you just read can be applied to your life at work or with your family. Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you. Remember, Jesus Himself lived and faced the challenges of daily living. He desires a two-way communication. The resulting blessing is that more you communicate; the stronger your connection will grow. To help His disciples better connect with the Father, Jesus provided a model prayer that was recorded in Matthew 6:9-13. Jesus included many parts of our earthly walk in this prayer, so that we can better gather our thoughts be-fore we begin:

Salutation (v. 9) Call upon God, recognizing Him for His holiness and identifying Him as the one and only true and living God.

Our Father which art in heaven

Reverence for the Name of God and His place as Lord of our lives. (v. 9-10)

Hallowed be Thy name.

We work for and watch for Your rule to be made manifest with us. “Build your kingdom here.”

Thy kingdom come.

We pray and seek for Your desires for us and your perfect will to be in every heart and lived out on this world just as it is in the perfection of heav-en.

Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Please provide for our necessities. (v. 11) Give us this day our daily bread.

This includes confession and repentance for any sins that may have crept in to daily living and a request for guidance and strength to extend a Christ-like forgiveness to others.(v. 12-13)

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

We recognize that God alone is Holy, that His will is perfect, that this is His world, and that all praise is due to Him for who He is and what He has done for us. (v. 13)

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever.

“So let it be…” Amen.

Discipleship Corner Continued... For those of us who are new to the Christian walk, or for those who pray mostly in agreement with others who lead us during church gatherings, the act of pray-ing can seem like an awkward experience. This is especially true if we are not use to public speaking and are asked to lead prayer aloud. Nevertheless, God desires to hear from us. God desires a personal relationship with us. If we desire a life where we sense His presence, experience His power, and are transformed into His likeness, prayer is not op-tional. Seek God in prayer frequently and know that He loves you and will al-ways be willing to listen:“ For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4:15-16 (NIV)

Remember: -Don’t be afraid that you will say something that you should not. God listens to your heart as well as your words.

-Be true to yourself. God wants a relationship with YOU, personally. -Make time for devotion to God in prayer a regular feature of each day. References: Stanley, Charles.
