Light Up Your Lifewith the

Do you want more spirituality in your dailylife? Do you want to feel closer to Allah, feelmore loved by Allah, and feel more love forall of Allah’s creation? Then read Chapter33 Verses 41-46 of the Holy Qur’an to findthe medicine and prescription. Allah com-mands, “O ye who believe! Remember Al-lah in great quantities, and extol His limitlessglory at morning and evening.” Zhikr is likemedicine, and the prescription is to performzhikr at least every morning and evening.Some translators read this as “from morningto evening” which means we should be re-membering Allah at all times. What is zhikr?Zhikr is the spiritual practice of rememberingGod by reading Qur’an, praying extra salat,listening to a khutbha, and repeating beautifulphrases from the Qur’an that glorify God. Try“SUBHAAN ALLAAH, AL-HAMDULILLAH, LA ILLAHA ILALLAAH, and ALLAHU AKBAR.” Tryrepeating some or all of Allah’s 99 beautifulnames. Zhikr can be vocal or silent, donealone or in a group. Zhikr is NOT our 5 obliga-tory prayers. And zhikr is definitely NOT“bida” (an innovation). What did the Prophet(SAW) prescribe for the poor who cannot getthe blessings of giving charity? He told themto repeat 33 times “Subhaan Allah,” to re-peat 33 times “Al-Hamdulillah,” and to re-peat 33 times “Allahu Akbar” after every fard

salat. What did theProphet (SAW) prescribefor his daughter Fatima when she was havingdifficulty? To repeat these same phrases everynight before sleep. One hadith reports youshould keep your tongue wet (or busy) with thezhikr of Allah. Another hadith reports that zhikris light on the tongue but heavy on the scale ofAllah. In Verse 43, we learn the benefits ofzhikr: “Allah bestows His blessings upon you,with His angels (echoing Him), so that He mighttake you out of the depths of darkness into theNur. And Allah is full of mercy towards Hisbelievers!” Nur means light, mercy, success,guidance, an open path to the barakat of Allah.Zhikr removes darkness so we can see clearlyand find our way out of difficulty, to find tran-quility and peace. In Verse 44 we are told “Onthe Day when they meet Him, they will be wel-comed with the greeting, Peace; and He willhave readied for them a most excellent reward.”Zhikr gives us a different status. It raises us tohigher levels in paradise. Zhikr is different fromsalat. Don’t follow a literal hardcore Islam thatdoesn’t offer zhikr as the prescription for peace.Reading Qur’an is zhikr! Recite the 99 namesof Allah! Repeat the beautiful phrases! Zhikrsoftens the heart, removes the rust, and puri-fies the heart.

I believe that a large part of conflict exists in the world becauseof a failure to understand each other. Whether it is in our busi-nesses, in our homes, in our houses of worship, in our com-munities, in government or in conflicts between nations I be-lieve that often the true source of conflict is a failure to com-municate with each other, to listen to each other but more im-portantly to really express empathy to what others are saying.When we speak we usually try to convince someone else whywe’re right. Even when we try to listen to another we stilloften listen to what they say but interpret it in terms of ourown narrow context. We listen to what they say, dissect thethought and argue back to prove that we are right based onwhat they say. We often think that the solutions will be cor-rected if we communicate our own position better so that theyunderstand us better. And then WE decide what OTHERS “re-ally” want and how that what they want is really what WEwant, and then we try to convince them of this fact withouttruly understanding what they really want. While solutions couldbe achieved through better communication, it needs to go be-yond just listening and responding to what we hear. And then you can begin to solve theconflict because instead of trying to convince them and otherswhy you’re right, instead you are understanding that their per-spective is different, and that the solution comes not from con-vincing them that you’re right but imagining what you wouldtruly want if you were in their place. The next time you get intoan argument with someone – try it. Don’t just listen, respondand argue, but stop and think very hard, for a while, aboutwhat they are saying. Imagine that you are feeling the circum-stances leading them to their position. You might just find thatyour conflict is resolved sooner, with less hard feelings, andthe relationship is enhanced by your sincere efforts to under-stand the other. That truly is empathy.

My Dear Friends: Allah (SWT) says in the Holy Qur’an:“Be sure that We shall test you with something of fear, hun-ger, some loss in goods, your lives, and the fruits of your toil,but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere, whosay when afflicted with calamity, “to Allah we belong and toHim is our return (Inna lil laahi Wa Inna ilayhi Raji’oon).They are those on who descend blessings from their Lord,and His mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance”.Further, if Allah (SWT), out of His wisdom, closes a dooragainst you, He opens out of His mercy a door better for youthan the closed one. It is by afflictions that righteous andunderstanding people are increased in rank and reward. Sa’adbin Abee Waqqaas (RA) said: I said, “O Messenger of Allah,who are the most afflicted of all people? He (SAW) replied,“The Prophets, then the righteous people, then those who arenearest to them in perfection and those who are nearest tothem. Man is tested according to his religiosity; if he is strongreligiously, his test is increased and if he is weak in religion,his test is reduced. And a believer will be tested until he walkson the earth sinless [i.e. his sins have been erased by seriesof afflictions that he endured.” (Al-Bukhari) My friends, weare tested in many different ways and in many different de-grees, some may be minor, and some may be major. Hard-ship and afflictions could affect our health, our wealth, oursustenance, our children, our parents, our family and ourfriends. These calamities especially those that are suddenand unexpected wrench our hearts and impact us physically,psychologically, emotionally, financially and spiritually. Whenwe are hit with such adversity, our first reaction, is to reachout to Allah (SWT) for help. We make dua and beg for helpand continue to do so until ease comes. Depending on theseverity of the affliction, we spend the majority of our timebegging Allah (SWT) for help, for relief, for support, for mercy.Sometimes during these tests we repent and we make bar-gains with Allah, that if He brings ease to us, we will be abetter person, we will give more charity, we will pray more,we will be more patient, we will make more effort to do good,we will stop doing all the wrong things that we have beendoing.

accepted Allaah as the Provider, Islam as a way of life andMuhammad as the messenger, tasted the real Imaan (faith)(Muslim)2. Abu Darda (RA) relates that the Prophet SAW said, “On theday of judgment, the heaviest item on the scale of deeds will begood manners”. (Abu Dawood)3. Amama (RA) relates that someone asked the Prophet SAW,“what is Imaan?” The Prophet SAW replied, “when you arepleased by doing a good deed and sad by a bad deed, you havebecome a momin. (Ahmad)4. Amama (RA) relates that the Prophet SAW stated, “whosoeverloves someone for Allaah, becomes someone’s enemy for Allaah,and gave away things for Allaah and them prohibited some forAllaah, has attained complete Imaan (faith). Anas (RA) relates that the one who has tasted real Imaan,will have three features: He will have the love for Allaah and theMessenger SAW more than anything else; whoever he/she loveswill only be for Allaah; and he/she abhors to be a non-believerjust as he/she will avoid being thrown in the fire. Ibn Abbaas (RA) relates that the Prophet SAW said,“whosoever has attained four qualities will be successful inthis world and the hereafter; A thankful heart; A tongue that isalways busy remembering Allaah; Patience in time of adversity;and a wife who is faithful to him about herself and his wealth.(Mishkaat)7.Abu Huraira (RA) related that the Prophet SAW once asked,“Is there anyone who will pay heed to my advise and teachothers?” Abu Huraira (RA) answered the call. The Prophet SAWheld his hand and said, “Stay away from sinning and you willbe salvaged; Be nice to your neighbor and you have become atrue momin; Whatever you desire for yourself, should do thesame for others and you will become a true Muslim; and refrainfrom too much laughter and jokes, because then the heartbecomes insensible”. (Tirmizi)May Allaah SWT Accept this effort. Ameen!

If we really live up to these promises, Allah has now madeus a better servant and lifts us up to a higher rank.Subhanallah!! Allah (SWT) loves us so much, that He doesthis for us. Sometimes we forget and may go back to ourold ways, again Allah (SWT) may allow affliction to happento remind us of our prior promise and His love for us to beof those who are righteous. Allah (SWT) is the One thatgives us the courage, strength, perseverance, patience andhope to help us through our difficulties. Just as when wesee our children making a mistake, we correct them and putdisciplinarian action into place, so that they will learn andnot repeat that mistake again; and if they subsequently makeanother or the same mistake, we again discipline them, sothat they will become obedient. So too Allah (SWT) wantsto keep us in check and make us obedient servants. Afterevery test, their comes relief, Allah (SWT) has assured usof this (Qur’an Chapter 94). Many of us have gone throughdifficulties, tragedies and devastating news, we feel it is un-bearable, overwhelming and unending. We become dis-traught, grief overtakes us, but Allah is there with us to holdus up and eventually show us how to continue our lives andheal. Tests and trials are sent to test our patience, our faithand our love for Allah (SWT). We must be strong at thesetimes and not question Allah as to why it happened. Knowthat Allah (SWT) will always bring us through these afflic-tions and we will be a better person, a better family, oncewe make more effort to worship Allah and do good andstay away from evil.

The background reflects the proposed expansion of Islamic Center of Greater Miami(ICGM) located at 4305 NW 183 Street,Miami Gardens, Florida, 33055. The proposed expansion will add a total of 8,200 square feet (4,600 square feet on the ground floor and3,600 square feet on the second floor) in order to address the growing need of the community. The first floor will provide for much neededspace for the brothers, while the second floor will provide a dedicated space for the sisters as well as class rooms for our children. Looting, destruction of property, assault,and religious desecration all were reported.At least three people were killed andaround 100 monks arrested.2001 : Tension between Buddhists andMuslims was also high in Sittwe. The re-sentments are deeply rooted, and resultfrom both communities feeling that theyare under siege from the other. The vio-lence in February 2001 flared up after anincident in which seven young monksrefused to pay a Muslim stall holder forcakes they had just eaten. The Muslimseller, a woman, retaliated by beating oneof the novices, according to a Muslimwitness. He attested that several seniormonks then came to protest and a brawlensued. One of the monks was hit overthe head by the Muslim seller’s husbandand started to bleed. Riots then broke out.A full-scale riot erupted after dusk andcarried on for several hours. Buddhistspoured gasoline on Muslim homes andproperties and set them alight. More thanthirty homes and a Muslim guest housewere burned down. Police and soldiersreportedly stood by and did nothing tostop the violence initially. There are noreliable estimates of the death toll or thenumber of injuries. More than twenty diedaccording to some Muslim activists. Thefighting took place in the predominantlyMuslim part of town and so it was pre-dominantly Muslim property that wasdamaged.The Conflict in June 2012The Riots : Buddhists started genocidein Rakhine in June 2012, after Myanmar’sPresident Thein Sein has said RohingyaMuslims must be expelled from the coun-try and sent to refugee camps run by theUnited Nations. It all started on 3rd June2012 when 11 innocent Muslims werekilled by the Burmese Army and the Bud-dhist mobs after bringing them downfrom a bus. A vehement protest was car-ried out in the Muslim majority provinceof Arakan, but the protestors fell victimto the tyranny of the mobs and the army.More than 50 people were reported killedand thousands of homes destroyed in fires

THE BEAUTIFUL GIRL Burned homes, shops and entire marketsdot the Buddhist-majority city of nearly200,000 people. Traditionally Muslimneighborhoods, such as Shwe Pyar, NaziKonetan and Mawlike, were deserted,locked up, or living in deep secrecy.Prominent mosques and buildings bearsigns from the municipality reading, “Noone is allowed to enter.” In some areasof Sittwe, the devastation from the vio-lence that peaked in June is comparableto Cyclone Nargis, which struckMyanmar in 2008. Most striking was thealmost completely absence of theRohingya population that once made upnearly one-third of the city’s residents,and the largest portion of its workingclass. The impact of that loss was obvi-ous. The Rohingya who worked as thecity’s ever-present ricksaw drivers andporters at the jetty and markets are nowgone. There are no signs of Muslims atthe airport, the boat shuttles that ferrypassengers to outlying islands, or eventhe local busses that run Buthidaung toMaungdaw, two Rohingya-majoritystates.Mass Graves : HRW says hundreds ofmen and boys were rounded up in massarrests, their whereabouts still unknown.Informal Rohingya estimates put thenumber of missing and arrested in thethousands. On the hushed streets ofSittwe and in the tent city outsideBhumei, Rohinyga speak of the brutalityof the Rakhine and the Myanmar forces,and of the many loved ones still missingfrom the conflict. Anethnic Rakhine soldier from the 352 LightInfantry Battalion claimed he and his com-rades killed “300 Rohingya” fromMyothugyi village near the area of ThreeMile between Buthidaung and Maundawtownships on the night of June 8. “I putthe butt of my gun here at [the right sideof] my waist and shot down many Mus-lims while keeping my left hand on maga-zines so that I could quickly fill up mybullets,” said the soldier, now stationedat a village outside Maungdaw. “Therewere so many dead bodies that we evenhad to call in a bulldozer to make a massgrave.” Another ethnic Rakhine soldierboasted that he and his troops killed anuncountable number of Rohingya in thevillage of Nyaung Chaung in the coun-tryside around Maungdaw during the earlyJune crackdown.Refugee Camps : The United Nations hasestimated that 80,000 people are still dis-placed around the cities of Sittwe andMaungdaw. Outside Sittwe, where thefleeing Rohingya had gathered, the situa-tion was worse. The village of Bhumei, afew kilometres to the west, was overrunby thousands of refugees who said theywere forced from the city, first by mobs,then by security troops. The refugeesendured the current monsoon rains inmud-floored tents, living mostly on bagsof rice provided by the UN’s World FoodProgram. There is no clinic, proper bath-room or clean water. One woman wascrying in the street with her rain-soakedchildren on her lap. She said they weresick and there was no clinic to look afterthem or food to eat.The Real StoryThe country has one of Asia’s biggest oiland gas reserves. It already produces 90per cent of the world’s rubies while itsjade is the world’s finest. Burma’s junglegive 80 per cent of the world’s teak andits rivers have plentiful hydropower po-tential. All these resources assumed greatimportance as Chinese and Indian appe-tite for natural resources grew phenom-enally. Both the economic giants shareborder with Burma.

He has also greatly benefittedfrom the wisdom and teachings of Dr Salah As-Sawy, Dr HatemAl Haj, and his wifes father, Sheikh Husam Mubarak. May Allahpreserve them all. Afterwards, he completed his Bachelor’s de-gree in Islamic Jurisprudence with honors from IOU, Bachelor’sdegree in Accounting from UNO, and is currently pursuing hisMasters degree from the University of Wales in the field of“The Fiqh of Minorities” for which he is authoring a thesis onthe comprehensive integration of Muslims into Western societywithout compromising their faith. He is a frequent lecturer andkeynote speaker at national conferences and conventions on avariety of subjects. He is also a speaker for the Citizen Dialogueprogram of the US State Department which trains foreign dip-lomats and audiences in the study of Islam. He has served asICNA Relief’s Outreach Director in Louisiana since 2005. He isvery active in engaging non Muslim audiences through univer-sity events and activities and several church invitations. In 2008,he helped found the East Jefferson Interfaith Clergy Associa-tion of which he currently sits on the steering committee. Hewas awarded for “Outstanding Civic Achievement” by the Ma-jor and City Council of New Orleans in 2010. HAJJ TIPSvisiting the Prophet’s (S.A.W)Masjid, etc.2. Go with a prepared heart- Hajj is not only a journey ofthe body to the house of Allaah,it is also a journey of the heartand soul. Just as it is impor-tant to know the manners ofperforming Hajj, it is equallyimportant to prepare yourselfspiritually. Remember, this isHajj – a great act of Ibaadah,

the fifth pillar of our Deenwhich Allaah loves.3. Know Salatul Janazah -“Whoever attends the janaazahuntil he offers the prayer willhave one qeeraat (of reward),and whoever attends until (thedeceased) is buried will havetwo qeeraats.” It was said, “OMessenger of Allaah, what arethe two qeeraats?” He said,“Like two great mountains,”meaning, of reward. (Saheeh)4. Don’t get overwhelmedwith the crowd - This is theUmmah of your belovedProphet Muhammad (S.A.W).All of you are there for oneand one purpose only – to wor-ship One God, Allaah. So lovethem, have mercy for themand make dua for them.5. Time is Precious - Do allyour 5 prayers in the Masjid,no excuses allowed! Whenyou pray in Masjid al-Haraamin Mecca, your salaah is mul-tiplied by 100,000 times. Whenyou get to Mina, busy your selfwith making dua, dhikr, read-ing Qur’aan, etc. The Prophet(S.A.W) said: “The best ofdu’a is du’a on the day of‘Arafah, and the best thing thatI and the Prophets before me said is Laa ilaaha ill-Allaah wahdahulaa shareeka lah. -Tirmidhi6. Hajj is not your annual vacation trip - It’s an act ofIbaadah. Remember this is Hajj, not a cruise or a vacation.7. Don’t just say it… mean it -When you recite the Talbiyah,don’t just say it like a parrot, without knowing what it meansand what it implies. You are saying “Labbaik, AllaahummaLabbaik..” What do these words imply? Oh Allaah I am here,here to serve You, here to obey You, here to submit my life, mywants, my desires only to You.8. Be nice - Obviously, everybody wants their Hajj To be‘Mabroor’ (accepted) because the Prophet (S.A.W) said: “Thereis no reward for Hajj mabroor except Paradise.” (Al-Bukhaari)They said: “What makes Hajj mabroor, Messenger of Allah?”He said, “Providing food to people and spreading (the greetingof) salaam.” (Fath al-Bari, 4/446) Thus we see that being kindto the people, being generous and considerate, serving and help-ing them is the KEY to having your Hajj accepted. So go aheadand help that old lady with her luggage, and the older brotheracross the street. May Allah accept all the Hajj of all the broth-ers and sisters, and teach the coming Hujjaj how to best pre-pare and earn a Hajj Mabroor, Ameen.

Most of these resources are, however, in areas that belong tonon-Burman ethnic minorities while the military junta, and es-pecially its elite, is exclusively Burman. Arakan is the regionwhere oil and gas exploration companies from China, India andelsewhere are stationed. Arakanese are a non-Burman minoritythat never had cordial relations with the majority but professesthe same religion – Buddhism; while Rohingyas who are nativeto the same region are Muslims. A violent conflict in Arakan isin the best interest of the military junta. As they side with theBuddhists, it helps them project themselves as pious Buddhistbut more importantly it gives them the reason to intervene anddirectly control the area. Martial law was imposed in the regionfollowing the recent violence. So while Arkans and Rohingyasfight over petty faith issues, the Burman military enjoys theriches of oil. As it stands, the vast majority of Rohingya is de-nied Myanmar citizenship, cannot own businesses, marry orrelocate. Whether this long-simmering dispute is founded inrace, religion or population, matters little to the Rohingya stuckin camps such as Bhumei. Nor to the Rakhine who live in ma-jority Rohingya areas and claim to live in constant fear of at-tack. Some scholars claim the animosity between Rakhine andRohingya began during the Second World War, when Buddhistbacked the Japanese and Muslims the British. In either case,unless the government or international bodies intervene, the vio-lence and discrimination seem destined to continue.

Whoever does so, heacted according to our Sunna (tradition), and whoever slaugh-tered (the sacrifice) before the prayer, what he offered wasjust meat he presented to his family, and that will not be con-sidered as Nusak (sacrifice).” (On hearing that) Abu Burda binNiyar got up, for he had slaughtered the sacrifice before theprayer, and said, “I have got a six month old ram.” The Prophetsaid, ‘Slaughter it (as a sacrifice) but it will not be sufficientfor any-one else (as a sacrifice after you).” Al-Bara’ added:The Prophet said, “Whoever slaughtered (the sacrifice) afterthe prayer, he slaughtered it at the right time and followed thetradition of the Muslims.”Conditions for SacrificeA sacrificial animal should satisfy the following conditions:1. It should be two years old, if it is an animal other than asheep. As for sheep, even a six month old lamb may besacrificed, but it should be fat and healthy. As for a camel, itmust be at least five years old, a cow two years old, and a goata year old at least.2. It should be healthy and free from all physical defects. Itshould not be one eyed, nor should it limp, be mangy, or verythin and weak.Selecting One’s Own Sacrificial AnimalMalik has reported from Hisham bin ‘Urwah and he from hisfather that he used to tell his sons: “O my sons! Do not slaughteran animal in the name of Allah such as you will be embarrassedto present as a gift to a close and respected friend of yours.Allah is the Most Honorable and Most Generous, and He is themost deserving to be offered the best of what you have.” Sa’idbin Mansur reported that Ibn ‘Umar once mounted in Makkahon a nice she-camel, which he liked very much, and said,“Excellent! Excellent!” admiring it. Then he dismounted, markedit as an offering, and a sacrifice for the pleasure of Allah.
