Business Bulletin n October 21st Saint John was designated one of the world’s Smart21 high tech hot spots by the Intelligent Communities Forum, a New York-based organization that seeks to promote the development of broadband technology in communities around the world. Led by Enterprise Saint John, the Smart Cities application process has already achieved one important outcome; it has enabled Saint John to begin to tell its full ICT story, including: National and international innovations in the development and use of broadband technology; redevelopment of the city’s Uptown into a vibrant urban centre that supports technology companies, their corporate customers and the professional, creative and retail businesses that serve those industries; and development of a community network, led by a core group of angel investors and the entrepreneurs they supported. Our next goal is to be named one of the world’s Top7. This process will further enable us to peel away the many layers of Saint John’s stories of innovation and discovery. This is another way Enterprise Saint John is putting Saint John on the map. Grand Bay-Westfield Quispamsis Rothesay St. Martins Saint John An event to Trump all events On October 6th, Spark, the once-in-a-lifetime gathering of Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani and Danny Williams was held at Harbour Station. Enterprise Saint John was there from the beginning, helping young entrepreneur, Brad LeBlanc, in choosing Saint John as the host city, developing the strategic framework and promoting the event. In addition to attracting business, community and civic leaders, approximately 1,000 students attended, giving rise to the importance of exposing our young people to different ways of thinking, and connecting them through unparalled networking opportunities. Events like Spark are key to defining a new, exciting and prosperous New Brunswick. He received prompt, honest and upfront information about the program and advice about his new business venture. In addition to receiving positive and constructive feedback, we also armed him with results from a needs-assessment we conducted with our contacts in the health and life sciences field. Doug is presently working on a project with Dalhousie Medicine NB for neurology teachings, attending classes and using his illustrations and medical interactions as teaching tools with the students. He was also successful in securing through Enterprise Saint John a $7,500 SEED loan. You could say he has drawn inspiration in applying his unique skill set. “My experience with Enterprise Saint John has been extremely rewarding. They have supported me throughout the whole process from putting my idea into a proper business plan, to getting SEED funding to make it a reality. The knowl- edge gained from Hemant Kumar has been essential in guiding and helping me achieve my aspirations of owning my own business. I am truly appreciative of Hemant and Sara Jones for being a great sounding board for questions or concerns; their input has helped me with my vision, and will continue to do so going forward." That is why Enterprise Saint John took the lead in developing The Think City – a community resource for retaining and attracting technologically-savvy innovators, entrepreneurs and forward-thinking investors. It enables individuals living and working in ICT to congregate and network using multiple social media platforms. Through Think City Ambassadors, this initiative creatively promotes Saint John’s strength in ICT and is quickly becoming fundamental to attracting talent and investment in the creative class. Did you know?Enterprise Saint John’s Workforce Coordinator is working to streamline talent options for employers to help them to tap into an often forgotten labour market pool. This pool is made up of clients of the John Howard Society, Mental Health Recovery Services, Options Outreach, Association for Community Living, the Saint John Multicultural & Newcomers Resource Centre (SJMNRC) and the Saint John Learning Exchange. Together we are working to help strengthen labour participation in our community.

In October, The Energy & Advanced Manufacturing Sector (TEAMS) project advisory group convened for their inaugural meeting. Led by Enterprise Saint John’s Workforce Coordinator, the group has representation from the private sector, organized labour, education, government and industry associations. Group members will provide advice and direction to help strengthen sector relationships and gain critical labour market information speci�c to Saint John’s energy and advanced manufacturing sector needs.

On October 27th, Enterprise Saint John hosted a board appreciation event to recognize our outgoing Board members. Presentations were made by Board Chair, Tony Gogan, to thank Mary Keith (J.D. Irving), Arthur T. Doyle (Cox & Palmer) and Darren Bishop (Bishop Windows & Doors). Activities included an educational and entertaining trolley tour of Saint John by Aquila Tours which showed us a new perspective of Saint John through the eyes of a tourist.

Enterprise Saint John is the regional administrator of the ACOA funded SEED Capital Program. The SEED program provides loans to start, expand or improve a small business, as well as acquire business skills training.
