September Motions Passed Lithgow Branch

1
Resolutions adopted by Lithgow branch at its ordinary meeting held on 8 September 2015. Bombing in Syria That the Lithgow Branch calls on the Federal Labor Caucus to oppose any extension to current air operations from Iraq into Syria, namely bombings,. We note that there is No clear legal framework to support such activity, and, No clear objective. Further this branch views this proposal as nothing more than a distraction from the dysfunctional domestic performance of Liberal/Nationals since they have been in government. A more constructive role for Australia would be to focus our efforts on increased humanitarian support for the victims and the rapidly escalating refugee crisis. 457/417 Visas That Lithgow branch calls on a Shorten/Plibersek Labor government to implement an independent commission of inquiry (possibly a royal commission) into the deployment of foreign labour within Australia, particularly the use of 457 and 417 visas and the impact of such labour arrangements on rural and regional communities. Humanitarian/Refugee Intake That Lithgow branch calls on the Federal Parliamentary Labor Party to support an increase of at least 30,000 places in Australia's humanitarian/refugee intake. Further, refugee places should be granted on individual circumstances and such an increase should not preference one religious, ethnic or sectarian group over another nor exclude those currently serving time in off shore “processing” centres such as on/in and not limited to Manus Island, Cambodia or Nauru.
