Visual Artist and EducatorBeing able to transcend your talent as a visual artist and to recognize the talent in other artists requires an exceptional person with extreme insights. Few people in the art world can claim these as rightly as Kenneth Caldwell. He started his career in the field of visual arts by developing a finely tuned listening ear which later helped him to create a style which reflected what he heard. For Caldwell, a Minneapolis native, the love of art is in his genes. Father, Charles Caldwell, is a mixed-media artist known for his contribution to the Black art community over the past 25 years.

Kenneth Caldwell has learned how important to his craft the continued acknowledgement of exceptional talents among up and coming African-American artists truly is - artists whose works have historically been overshadowed by more established visual artists.

With works reminiscent of Ernie Barnes, and a unique contemporary sensibility, his pieces recreate the energy and spirit of the African- American experience from the Harlem Renaissance to today’s Hip Hop era. Lessons learned from his travels across country to exhibit his work, combined with his own personal experiences, have contributed greatly to the continuous evolution of Kenneth Caldwell and his craft. Now that the pre-season is over its time to get down to business for the Minnesota Vikings. And for any true Vikings fan it could possibly get any better then Vikes and Pack week one on Monday night football. Tarvis Jackson sat out the final two pre-season games to rest his injured knee and he should be 100% percent come opening night. The Viking escaped without any injuries to there core player but the lost of Heath Farwell will effect the special teams unit however at the same time give one of there younger linebackers a chance to crack the roster. Left tackle Bryant McKinnie received a 4 game suspension for his off the field incident and will miss what I think is this years toughest 4 game stretch of the season wk.1 Green Bay Packer wk.2 Peyton Manning and the Colts wk. 3 Carolinan Panthers wk. 4 Vince Young’s Tennessee Titans.

The Twins are still right in the mix after there longest road trip of the season. Still neck and neck with the Chicago Whitesox for the AL central title. Joe Mauer is contending for another batting title and Francisco Liriano has been awesome since his return from the minors going 4-0 with a 1.21 era the season could be on the line when the two teams meet in there final series of the year.

I was struck this morning as I left my home with the thought that even the day changes. Each morning as I walk out of my home I am amazed at how the day chooses to shift itself as a means of providing each of us with a new view. This change is not simply an accidental shift in universal energy, but a reminder to us to be like the day. As the day changes and offers new views, so must we attempt to embrace the change that presents itself to us in each moment of our lives.

One of the most challenging obstacles in many of our lives is our inability to accept change. It is critical to our existence that we begin to develop an awareness of change and its ability to foster human creativity. Therefore, it is a necessity that we seek out change in the world. No longer can we be resistant to the possible power change can have in ourselves and the reality around us.

The source of our creativity exists in our ability to change. So, as you become aware of the changes happening in your life, embrace them as opportunities for creative expression. I am not suggesting that you simply wait for these changes to happen but, more that you become the change agent. There is a multitude of expressive ways to respond to this reality. So, choose to be creative in the meals you prepare. Choose creativity in the way you style your hair. Be expressive in the clothing you wear. Choose to go down a different road simply to see what new possibilities it might offer to you. Choose to engage life and to be the creative entity that you are.

Change is theSource of Creativity

She’s faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap over an “Superdome” in a single bound!

On August 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina destroyed many families’ lives, dreams and any hopes for growing old in the city of New Orleans; however, as a result of the unexpected tragedy many people were given a new outlook on life.

Sheila St. James was up rooted, taken from everything that she had ever known; Hurricane Katrina damaged her city, home, and career goals but it did not ruin her spirit. Helicopter-rescued from a rooftop above 6 feet high contaminated floodwaters, she was suddenly homeless staying in the Texas Astrodome and later flown to Minnesota. Sheila has been in Minnesota for approximately 3 years and when she landed in the twin cities she hit the ground running! You may know her from KMOJ where she gives health, wellness, and fitness advice through the city air waves stating that, “An once or prevention is worth a pound of cure.” Sheila is an inspiration to many young adults who want to make life changes; she understands adversity and is willing to look any obstacle in the face. Sheila is a fitness guru whom holds the first place trophy for The NPC Northstar Fitness championship (11.07, Minnesota) and has devoted her life to helping shape up Minnesotans! She offers personal and group training as well as public speaking on health related topics. For more information on Sheila and how she can help you get in shape, check her out at www.shapeupwithsheila.com.

MUJA MESSIAHMuja has traveled a long way and still has the desire for more. Working day in and day out perfecting his craft creating music that reveals who he is and what he represent I recently crossed paths with Muja and we sat down for a Q&A.

4SEEN: How did you get your name? And what’s the meaning behind it?

MUJA: I got the name from my O.G. Sunny Black. He was the 1st born in minnesota with 5% lessons. Muja is short for Muja-heed and it means “SOLDIER”. Messiah is self explanatory. We’re all in control of our own destinies. Thus hence we’re all Messiahs.

4SEEN: How has the response been after the much anticipated release of Bboy Dboy?

MUJA: The people i know have been extremely supportive! Its to early to tell what the world thinks but as long as I know I put my all into the project, I’m not trippin’ on what people think.

4SEEN: What inspires you as a artist?

MUJA: NEXT QUESTION! Continued on page 9

NASEsco is back! For those of you that still like lyrical content, then this is the album for you. Nas touches on a lot of subjects, such as, slavery and politics and still finds time to give you a hot sixteen bars in the process.

Bun B (Trill 2) Bun is coming with that southern U.G.K. style that got him where he is today. Good beats and that Texas swagger proving that U.G.K is still alive.

Byrd Gang (M.O.B.) Jim Jones brings us Byrd Gang, which seems to be lacking without lyricist StackBundles and “hook man” Max B. The subject matter is your typical money, cars, and women concept, which floods the radio stations today. Despite that, you still find some hard hitting beats and hooks on this project.

Sleeper Album (Trey Day) Compared to Usher and Chris Brown, Trey Songs does not receive enough exposure. He delivers track after track of smooth songs with a taste of hip hop flare. An album in which you won’t want to skip a song!

7 Sushi, has definitely created a buzz among the socialites of the Twin Cities with it’s beautiful atmosphere, great food, and ultra lounge experience.

The dress code is strictly enforced so guys showing up in gym shoes, white T’s, and baseball caps you may as well turn right around. Ladies, the dress code is not as strictly enforced; however, you should want to be on top of your game when you are visiting 7 Sushi. In a nut shell once you visit 7 Sushi on a Saturday night you will never want to go to Karma Night Club again.

There is no cost to enter but the price is made up in the cost of alcoholic beverages with a Long Island costing $12.50, you may want to rethink your drink and then go for sushi!

Visit 7 Sushi at 700 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis, MN.

Does Love Works Academy Work?

With the school year beginning in a few short days parents are hoping to make the right decision about their children’s education; what school is the best choice and will the children be offered adequate education. Never do they think does my child’s teacher have a license to teach! Strikingly, parents of children attending Love Works Academy of Golden Valley have found themselves not knowing whether or not the teachers at the school are licensed to teach. According to an Investigation of KSTP 5 News, Love Works Academy is not in compliance with state laws and have individuals teaching children who are not qualified to do so. Many parents of Love Works Academy are happy with the education that their children have been receiving by the faculty of the Academy and were anticipating their children returning to school this fall. How does a parent react to their local news station exposing this type of informa-tion? The Academy’s principal and founder Patrice Dorrall has stated on several occasions in parent newsletters as well as statements to KSTP that her staff are qualified and licensed to teach. Many of the teachers hold provisional license, which was never disclosed by the reports on KSTP. Whether or not KSTP has become the Minnesota’s National Enquirer or Love Works Academy has some hiring and firing to do; parents must take a few things away from this… Never assume, research everything you hear, ask questions, and make your voice known. Those of us at 4SEEN, wish the best for Love Works Academy staff and students.
