GEM is the official publication of the St. Charles Borromeo Council of the Knights of Columbus. It is published monthly by Knights of Columbus Council #3960, Randallstown, MD 21133, with an average circulation of approximately 160. Inquiries should be directed to the Editor.
Brother Knights,
I hope everyone had a blessed Christmas and enjoyed time with family and friends. January 22 marks the 41st anniversary of one of the most incomprehensible decisions made by the US Supreme Court, Roe v Wade. One of the events I would like to see occur in my lifetime is the overturning of this decision. As Knights, we must continue our efforts to make this happen. Our continued support of the Ultrasound Fund is very important. We can take pride in knowing our donations assisted in purchasing the 500th ultrasound machine since the program was begun by Supreme. I ask all of you to find time on January 22 to recite this prayer with your family:
Prayer for the Unborn Almighty God, our Father, you who have given us life and intended us to have it forever, grant us your blessings. Enlighten our minds to an awareness and to a renewed conviction that all human life is sacred because it is created in your image and likeness. Help us to teach by word and the example of our lives that life occupies the first place, that human life is precious because it is the gift of God whose love is infinite. Give us the strength to defend human life against every influence

or action that threatens or weakens it, as well as the strength to make every life more human in all its aspects.
Give us the grace... When the sacredness of life before birth is attacked, to stand up and proclaim that no one ever has the authority to destroy unborn life. When a child is described as a burden or is looked upon only as a means to satisfy an emotional need, to stand up and insist that every child is a unique and unrepeatable gift of God, a gift of God with a right to a loving and united family. When the institution of marriage is abandoned to human selfishness or reduced to a temporary conditional arrangement that can easily be terminated, to stand up and affirm the indissolubility of the marriage bond.

Chaplin’s Message
An old saying says, “Charity begins at home.” Another word for charity is love, and love, not only among family members, but also for God begins at home. To begin at home, or anywhere else, love requires thought. For that reason, the words of St. Anselm are important. He urges us to “…escape from your everyday busyness, break off from your cares, and enter your mind’s inner chamber. Shut out everything but God and whatever helps you to seek him…” Teach me,” he asks God, “to seek you and when I seek you, show yourself to me… Let me seek you in desiring you and desire you in seeking you, find you in loving you/ and love you in finding you” (Breviary, vol. I, p.184). Pope John Paul II said: “…prayer is an essential part of being human and the first condition for authentic freedom of spirit.” (Familiaris Consortio). He urged families to pray in common — “husband and wife together, parents and children together”. We might add that it is a good practice for families to go together to confession. Archbishop Lori added: “The family is rightly called the domestic church,/ and the church that doesn’t pray is a closed church” (In Columbia, Dec. “14, pp. 4-5).
When the value of the family is threatened because of social and economic pressure, to stand up and reaffirm that the family is necessary not only for the private good of every person, but also for the common good of every society, nation and state. When freedom is used to dominate the weak, to squander natural resources and energy, to deny basic necessities to people, to stand up and affirm the demands of justice and social love. Almighty Father, give us courage to proclaim the supreme dignity of all human life and to demand that society itself give its protection. We ask this in your name, through the redemptive act of your Son and in the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Vivat Jesu!! Joe Ignatius Grand Knight

Chaplin’s Message continued from Page 2 From another source comes another important point: “The biggest failure, the biggest sadness of so many people of my generation, including parents, educators and leaders in the Church, is our failure to pass along our faith in a compelling way to the generation now taking our place.” Why? One reason is that our faith “really didn’t matter to us. Not enough to shape our lives. Not enough for us to suffer for it.” (Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. “Strangers in a strange land” In First Things. January 2015). Leading our families in prayer together and in going to confession together are ways of bringing our domestic church to life. The Patriotic Degree
For most men who follow Jesus, there comes a time when duty extends beyond our own lives, beyond how we lead our families, and into how we serve our fellow man. That's what the Knights of Columbus is all about. The Patriotic Degree allows knights to take this one step further. "Sir Knight" is more than a title. It's an honor.

33 District Deputy’s Report
We have already reached the midway point of the Columbian Year and I have already gained a lot being District Deputy over the first six months. I have gained over five pounds from all the delicious foods I have eaten during the holiday parties and after meeting meals at the five Councils. My wife wants me to begin wearing a sign that says “Do Not Feed the District Deputy”.
I have also gained a lot of new
friends in my visits to all the Councils across the District. I encourage you to meet these fine men as well by coming to your Council meetings and activities if you have been away for a while. You can also visit any Council worldwide by just showing your membership card. Why not stop by one of the other Councils in the District to share some fellowship with nearby Brothers?
I have also gained a lot more
knowledge about the Knights of Columbus through the various State Council Meetings I have attended. Your Grand Knight and Deputy Grand Knight have the opportunity to attend the State Council Midterm Meeting scheduled for January 3rd. Talk to them after their meeting to see what they learned during the fact filled day. Many of your Council Officers also picked up some information at our District Meetings as well. We can all learn more about the Order by observing the Degree Ceremonials again and again. We have a First Degree scheduled for January 14th at ABP Fulton Sheen Council and a Second Degree scheduled for Westminster on January 20th. Why not renew your pledges by attending these Degrees?
District Warden Dave Johnston and I
wish you and your families a happy and
prosperous New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2015! Vivat Jesus! DD John Trainor 443-744-3609 [email protected] DW David Johnston 443-610-3216 [email protected]
A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, town, city or neighborhood in which you live. However, a successful Knights of Columbus program depends on people taking the initial idea, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, then implementing the program in the way it works.
Each local council evaluates the needs of their community and implements those programs and activities that are most needed in their area. The Knights of Columbus Service Programs activities are designed to engage the council members in various activities across a host of categories.

A special THANKS to Bob Rittie for joining our BINGO volunteers at both CHAPEL HILL & OAKLAND MANOR. We still need another Council VOLUNTEER to join him at Oakland Manor, once a year, in October on the 3rd Tuesday from 7-8pm? Hopefully, this appeal will excite some interest with our NEW membership, in particular, as we could use some more Council VOLUNTEERS for the BINGO every THURSDAY from 7-8pm at Genesis, as well.

The Demise of Abortion Clinics Operation Rescue reports that so far this year, preliminary numbers indicate that twelve surgical abortion facilities have closed along with six medication abortion clinics and five abortion referral centers. More are expected to close as new abortion laws in several states, such as the requirement that abortionists maintain local hospital privileges, go into effect. Last year, a record number of abortion facilities shut down, including 87 surgical centers and six that offered only medication abortions. Presently, nationwide there are 577 surgical abortion clinics, 177 abortion pill clinics, and 839 abortionists. Of these, 19 abortion clinics and at least 17 abortionists are operating in the Maryland.

VOCATIONS
Founded by a parish priest, the Knights of Columbus has always worked hard to encourage young men and women to consider God’s call to service in the priesthood or religious life. Under the motto “Keep the Faith Alive,” the Order’s vocations initiative has a number of programs based on prayer and designed to reach the hearts and minds of young people, as well as to provide financial support during their years of seminary training or religious formation. The heart of the Order’s vocations effort continues to be the Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP) by which assemblies, councils and Squires circles provide monetary and moral support for seminarians and postulants who are preparing for the priesthood or religious life.
Prayers for the Sick and Distressed
Please keep Laura Garcia’s doctor-son, Luis, in prayer. We do not have much detail and don’t know the circumstances that led to his current condition. Please keep Luis, his lovely wife, baby daughter, and all of the Garcia’s in prayer.

33 From Our Worthy Lecturer
David Brantley
They say Michelangelo was busy working on the magnificent ceiling of the Sistine Chapel when he noticed an elderly lady praying her Rosary. He decided to play a trick on her, and, from his perch high above, shouted at the top of his voice, “I am your Lord, Jesus Christ!” The lady was busy with her Hail Marys and did not appear to notice the irreverent artist, so he tried again. “I am your Lord, Jesus Christ!” The old lady kept on praying without missing a bead. Once again, “I AM YOUR LORD, JESUS CHRIST!” This time, the lady answered him, “Be quiet, young man. I’m talking to your mother!”
Devotion to Our Lady is woven, like a silver thread, throughout the history of the Church. Tonight I would like to share with you three Marian images and the devotions that surround them. All three of these devotions are tied in some way to the two living popes, and they each speak in a particular way to the needs of the present day, when our understanding of the nature of marriage is largely forgotten in the general culture and under attack in the political sphere. To begin, we set the Wayback Machine to March 7, 1920, and travel to the small village of Altötting, nestled near the German–Austrian border. This is a town that seems especially touched by divine grace. The Benedictines had a monastery here in the ninth century. The Huns came and did to the the monastery what Huns do everything, but the monastery was rebuilt. In 1489 a boy who had drowned was brought back to life when his mother laid him before the statue of Our Lady at the village church. Now you pick up the local paper, and you see the following advertisement: Mid-level government official, single, Catholic, 43 years old, with an irreproachable record, from the country, seeks to marry in the near future a good Catholic girl who is tidy and a good cook and can do all the household chores and is also proficient at sewing and has her own furnishings. Now this little town is as auspicious a place as any to place this kind of ad, and that week a young lady named Maria Peintner will answer the it. The “mid-level government official”, a police officer, in fact, will turn out to be Joseph Ratzinger, Sr. The Ratzingers were married, not here, but far away, in the Tyrolean village of Absam. Again, it is hard to imagine a more fitting place, for here, again, we see Our Lady’s imprint. So back into the Wayback Machine. We arrive at Absam on January 17, 1797. A young girl is at home attending to her sewing when she is astonished by the sight of a young woman looking in on her from outside the window of the main room. The woman turns away, but her face remains impressed on the glass, as if burned onto the pane. Her head was covered, leaning gently to one side, and her face bore an expression that was somber yet hopeful. It was Our Lady, looking in on our world. She looked with pity on the condition of humanity, yet she appeared hopeful for its redemption, a redemption for which she constantly pleaded to her Son. The skeptics say someone painted the face on the window, but buffing, washing, sanding, acids, nothing would efface the precious image. In the end, the glass will be taken to the church of St. Michael in the town of Absam, where it stands to this day in a splendid golden frame. This is where Maria Peintner married Joseph Ratzinger. Together they had three children. The youngest was given his father’s name, but in due time, the world would come to know him as Benedict XVI. There is one more Marian image I would like to tell you about, but first, I need to talk about knots. I spent three years in Cub Scouts, and I was hopeless when it came to knots. One of the most frustrating experiences for me as a young boy was being unable to untie my shoes. It had taken me longer than it should have to learn how to tie them, now learning to untie them was even trickier. It’s not that hard, right? You take the free ends, gently pull apart, and voilà. Well, that doesn’t work if you’re an impatient eight-year-old. I would just grab one of the ends and pull as hard as I could, and that usually worked. But sometimes I’d end up with a worse knot than what I had started with. In frustration, I would imagine Alexander the Great and the Gordian knot and fantasize about taking a pair of scissors to the laces, but my mother would not have approved. So I often resorted to taking the compass out of my pencil box and using the point to work the tease the knot apart.
GEM Page 9
Knots can be very useful things, but they are not always welcome. In a few weeks most of you will be getting out your Christmas lights and, most likely, you’re going to have some knots to undo there. And of course, we talk about knotty problems, right? Perhaps we don’t know how old this metaphor is. St. Irenaeus, bishop of Lyons, lived in the second century and he spoke of knots. In Adversus Hæreses he wrote, “[t]he knot of Eve’s disobedience was untied by the obedience of Mary; what the virgin Eve bound by her unbelief, the Virgin Mary loosened by her faith.” Now follow me to another Bavarian city. Augsburg this time. We’re at the church of St. Peter. And here, on a large wood panel as tall I am, we see what appears to be a rather conventional painting of Our Lady. She stands with the Moon at her feet and the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove, overhead. She treads on the Serpent, as predicted in Genesis, and she is surrounded by adoring angels. But there’s something odd here. Her hands are busy, untying a knotted ribbon, and beneath the Moon we see a man making a journey in the company of his dog and the angel Rafael. What’s going on here? Perhaps, on looking at these figures, you recall the story of Tobias and Sarah. Sarah had lost seven husbands, all of whom were stricken by an angel of death on their wedding night. (I do not know whether the Herman’s Hermits hit “I’m Henry VIII, I Am” has anything to do with this, but I digress.) Meanwhile Tobias, in the company of his dog and the Angel, makes his way to Sarah’s village, and marries her, and by virtue of a ritual prescribed by Rafael, is able to avoid the fate of Sarah’s previous husbands. So there’s a marriage story there, but what about the ribbon and the knots? Well, sometime in the seventeenth century, well before this painting was commissioned, a village priest in Ingolstadt was consulted by man and woman who were working through some knotty problems of their own, which is to say that ever since they tied the knot their marriage was in knots. The priest prayed to Our Lady on their behalf, saying “I raise the bonds of Matrimony, to untie all knots and straighten them.” Through her intercession of Our Lady, the marriage was saved, and in 1700, the couple’s grandson, remembering this incident from his family’s history, commissioned and donated this image. Pope Francis saw the painting while he was in Germany and he was so impressed by it that he had a copy made and shipped back home. In short order, the Virgen desatanudos, as she is known in Spanish, became one of Argentina’s most popular devotions. In gratitude, the then Jorge Cardinal Bergolio presented Pope Benedict XVI with a chalice, on which is engraved the image of Mary, the Untier of Knots. The Holy Father spoke about this theme a little over a year ago. He said, “[t]he ‘knot’ of disobedience, the ‘knot’ of unbelief. When children disobey their parents, we can say that a little ‘knot’ is created. … At that moment, they break trust with their parents. … Then the relationship with their parents needs to be purified of this fault; the child has to ask forgiveness so that harmony and trust can be restored. Something of the same sort happens in our relationship with God.” (Catechesis, Oct. 12, 2013) The Pope described sin as “a kind of knot created deep within us,” and said, “many knots form a tangle which gets more and more painful and difficult to undo. But we know one thing: nothing is impossible for God’s mercy... [M]ary, whose ‘yes’ opened the door for God to undo the knot of the ancient disobedience, is the Mother who patiently and lovingly brings us to God, so that he can untangle the knots of our soul by his fatherly mercy.” Finally, he lays it on the line, “Do I ask Mary to help me trust in God’s mercy, to undo these knots, to change?” A very good question. Don’t forget your Rosary. Talk to your Mother. She hasn’t heard from you in decades. Vivat Iesus! . Vivat Iesus!
