WORLD FIRST BLOCKCHAIN SECURITY ON THE ARDNAMURCHAN 2017/AD BOTTLE TO ENSURE TRACEABILITY, TRANSPARENCY AND AUTHENTICITY At the end of this month, we launched the much anticipated 2017/AD (which has now stared making its way to the shelves in the UK, and will be making its way to our overseas stockists shortly). This next edition of the Ardnamurchan Distillery’s mature spirit (a little more peaty than its predecessor, the 2016/AD) highlights the promise and quality of what the distillery is producing with an exciting new development piloted on the 2017/AD bottle itself. The Ardnamurchan Distillery has teamed up with digital tech firm, Arc-Net, to create a bottle that champions traceability, transparency and authenticity. Every single bottle of the 2017/AD will have its own unique identity and whisky fans will be able to discover every detail of the spirit’s journey, from the field where the barley was farmed, to who bottled it and when. The bottle’s information is stored on a digital platform using Blockchain software developed by Arc-Net and can be revealed by simply scanning the bottle’s unique QR code. Alex Bruce, MD of Adelphi and the Ardnamurchan Distillery has said: “In addition to a growing number of countries, globally, recognising Scotch Whisky’s Geographical Indication [GI], we also believe it to be essential that the consumer is able to understand the craftsmanship of making it, and for the producer to ensure the security of their route to market. In addition, the arc- net platform will give us the opportunity, as a nascent distiller, to share and communicate our love for the brand and ensure our customers have the ability to visualise and validate our products as they move across the globe.” Right, photo of 2017/AD : Copyright photograph by Tina Norris. ADELPHI’S FIRST APPREARNACE AT MALTSTOCK

On the 8th of September, Lucy headed for Overasselt to represent Adelphi in their first appearance at Maltstock, which prides itself on being the most ‘relaxed’ whisky fair – a weekend of whisky masterclasses from an array of different companies and coming together to enjoy drams from all over the world. The Adelphi masterclass (and Lucy’s first ever masterclass in the Netherlands) took place on the Saturday and was one Maltstock’s most subscribed. Queues of people waited eagerly outside hoping to secure a place at the tasting, with chairs even being added onto the ends of tables to accommodate all the attendees. The Adelphi tasting featured 5 drams: The Glenborrodale Batch 4, the latest 10yo Breath of Speyside, a Bunnahabhain 11yo, a Laphroaig 20yo and those who participated also got to try the Ardnamurchan 2017/AD Mature Spirit as a sneak preview before its release. A great weekend and thanks to all the Maltstock team for organising the event and their help.

ADELPHI SINGLE CASK BOTTLING OF LAPHROAIG PRESENTED TO HRH THE PRINCE CHARLES, DUKE OF ROTHESAY DURING ROYAL VISIT TO CHARLESTOWN’S LIME CENTRE

On Friday 8th September, Prince Charles HRH Prince of Wales (Duke of Rothesay) visited the Lime Centre in Charlestown, Fife, marking it the first Royal visit since the village was laid out in the reign of George II. Invited by the Lime Centre Trust and welcomed to Charlestown by Lord Elgin, Prince Charles presented a certificate to the 20,000th trainee to have completed a course in traditional craft skills. An Adelphi bottling of Laphroaig was also gifted to HRH The Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay during the visit. It was felt that this might be a suitable replacement for the bottle that was used to christen the hull of the HMS Prince of Wales earlier that day.

ALEX BRUCE RECEIVES ‘DAIMYO AWARD’ AT THE SCOTTISH SAMURAI AWARDS 2017

The Order of the Scottish Samurai (OSS) seeks to recognise, celebrate and connect those who have achieved excellence in their field and/or who have made a substantial contribution to their community. The Award also recognises the longstanding friendship between Scotland and Japan and seeks to build upon the shared values of the two nations and cultures to enable deeper friendship and shared initiatives, inspired by Lord Elgin (James Bruce, 8th Earl of Elgin) signing the Treaty of Amity and Commerce (1858) and the subsequent endeavours of Thomas Blake Glover (‘The Scottish Samurai, also commemorated in Adelphi Distillery and Fusion Whisky’s ‘Glover’ range). This year, Adelphi’s Alex Bruce received the ‘Daimyo’ Award, recognising his services to the relationship between Scotland and Japan. The event took place in Aberdeen, home to Thomas Blake Glover, and was held at the Marcliffe Hotel. Previous recipients include Sir Billy Connolly and Joanna Lumley. Congratulations Alex!

WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF DISTILLERS INAUGURAL SCOTTISH CAR TOUR

Co-hosted by Adelphi MD, Alex Bruce, the inaugural Scottish Car tour took place from 11th-13th of September and included visits to distilleries in the borders, Speyside and Fife. The host of cars that took part in, and completed, the tour included 2 Bentleys, 1 Alvis, 1 Porsche, 1 Sunbeam, 1 Jensen, 1 Triumph, 1 Morgan, 1 Alfa Romeo and 1 VW. The three day tour started with a visit to Annandale Distillery, the route went on to include Kingsbarns, Daftmill, Morrison & Mackay, Ballindalloch, Glendronach, Dalmunach, Aberfeldy and finished with a dinner at Broomhall (the Fife home of the family of King Robert the Bruce) situated next to Adelphi’s offices and warehouse. In two years’ time, a tour of the West Coast distilleries is planned. All money raised from the tour went to the Worshipful Company’s chosen charities.

GETTING TO KNOW THE TEAM: GORDON MACKENZIE

WHAT’S YOUR POSITION WITHIN THE COMPANY?

I’m currently Production Manager at the distillery

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING AT THE ARDNAMURCHAN DISTILLERY?

I’ve been here since the end of February 2014 WHAT BROUGHT YOU INTO THE WHISKY INDUSTRY?

After driving the Kilchoan to Fort William bus for nearly 17 years, I felt I needed a change! As I drove by watching the distillery grow, I plucked up the courage to apply for a job. When I was given the position, I frantically read up everything I could about whisky as I knew next to nothing!

DESCRIBE A DAY IN THE LIFE AS THE ARDNAMURCHAN DISTILLERY’S PRODUCTION MANAGER?

This week I’m on the mash so when I come in at 8:00, I recirculate the sparge and prepare the yeast before mashing at around 8:30. When the mash is done, I’ll start the grind and heat up tank 2 for the second water. In between waiting for tanks to heat/fill/empty, I’ll do some paperwork or clean up. Sometimes I’ll do a Manager’s Tour for visitors who are wanting a more in-depth tour of the distillery.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR FAVOURITE ASPECT OF YOUR JOB?

Production is probably the most satisfying part for me as you’ve created something, but it’s also enjoyable working things out at the end of the week, especially when it’s right and Fraser doesn’t come in waving a piece of paper with corrections on it!

WHAT DO YOU DO TO UNWIND OUTSIDE OF WORK?

I ‘enjoy’ DIY, watching football, and reading.

HAVE YOU GOT A FAVOURITE WHISKY THAT YOU’VE TRIED?

My favourite whisky out of the ones that I have tried is the Glendronach 21 year old.

The fleet of cars that took place in the tour, lined up outside of Broomhall.
