As part of our 60th Celebration, the Downtown Hy-Vee will be having a walk up and drive up FLU SHOT CLINIC at the NE corner of the CTK McConnell parking lot.

You may drive your vehicle to the set-up and receive your flu shot with-out leaving your vehicle, or, you can walk up. Todd Lundquist, our Call Committee Chair is promoting the Downtown Hy-Vee clinics this year and he informs us that Jairus McBride, the Pharmacy Manager, will be there from 8:30am until all activities are

done to provide the shots. No shots will be offered during the worship.

Their will be question forms to fill out on site. Bring your insurance cards. If you are on Medicare, bring your red/white/blue Med-icare card. Also, there is opportunity to receive one in the series of your shingles shots. If you would like that please contact Todd several days in advance as he wants to review your insurance and the uninsured portion of the cost of the shot with you.

If you don't have insurance, the flu shot is $42.99 for a regular dose (6 years of age through 64 years of age); $78.99 for 65 years of age or older; and, $80.99 for those with egg allergies.

Todd states that if you can't get your shot that day, he will help you at the Downtown Hy-Vee flu shot drive-through/walk up clinics on Mondays from 7 to 11 am; Thursdays from 3 to 7pm; and, Saturdays from 10am to 2pm. If you want to catch up with him there, you can ask how things are progressing with the Call Committee! :)

Shelter season will soon be upon us. Stay at home orders are especially difficult for those without a home and the weather does not pause during a pandemic. So this ministry is more important than ever this year. The plan is to start the season the first week in October using the same rotating church model as in year’s past. Then adjustments will be made as necessary based on the needs and safety of everyone. If you are comfortable volunteering in

bedrooms. We are looking for donations of about $300 to cover some paint touch-up, decor and wall clocks, as well as some interior decorating touches. Please contact the church office if you are interested in donating toward this.

More news to follow but until then please save the dates for our first two weeks of sponsoring shelter:

A Heritage of Faithfulness—Celebrating our 60th Year by Pastor John

On September 13, 2020 we will observe our 60th year as an organized congregation. In prepa-ration of that ob-

servance, I have been reading through the anniversary booklet that was put together ten years ago as we celebrat-ed Christ the King’s Journey of Faithfulness – Faithful Worship; Faithful Members; Faithful Ministry. One of the more inter-esting sections to me has been the Member’s Memories. Here are a few of them . . .

With the guidance of the Home Mission Committee of the Southern Minnesota District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, along with the gift of $10,000 from Bethlehem Lutheran Church and a call to Harry An-derson, a new mission congregation started in the hilltop area of Mankato. This new mission congrega-tion was named Christ the King as a result of that gift from Bethlehem Lutheran Church. It was because of this generosity and because a number of it’s members would be coming from Bethlehem to the church, that Pastor Harry Anderson was inspired to announce the name of this new congregation as Christ the King Lu-theran church based on the words of the prophet Mi-cah – Out of Bethlehem shall come forth one who is to rule in Israel, whose origin is from of old, from ancient times. (Micah 5:2)

Pastor Harry Anderson had a knack for getting people to rise to the need at hand in the new church. When calling on the neighborhood residents to tell them about the new church that would be forming, he elicit-ed information about their work, skills and interests and when the time came, he had a list of carpenters, electricians, musicians and teachers, etc. to call upon to help build and staff the new church.

We were very grateful to St. John’s Catholic

Church for giving us their old pews – that meant that we could get rid of the noisy folding chairs. With a church full of very young children, there was quite a bit of movement and noise on the tile floor.

It wasn’t long before we had realized that we needed to add on as the church grew and more facilities were needed and we have seen many new additions and growth until the present time. Each of those times, there have been new people with new insight and new expertise to help in our mis-sion of – Being a caring community committed to know Christ and to make Christ known to all.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of wit-nesses, let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. (Hebrews 11:1)

That first cloud of witnesses was a small group, but one that was deeply committed to do what they be-lieved God was calling them to. They had a vision and a desire to help build a ministry in which the gos-pel would be preached, the sacraments would be properly administered and God’s people could gather for worship and fellowship. They planted the seeds and today we are part of the on-going harvest, pos-sessing that same vision and commitment – living out a Heritage of Faithfulness.

What a joy to celebrate sixty years of knowing Christ and making Christ known. What a privilege it is for us to covenant together to continue that very ministry of word and sacrament, keeping our eyes fixed on the one who knows and shows us the way.

Ruth Circle Update The CTK Ruth Circle will NOT be scheduled September through December. We all know that long range planning is practically impossible right now. Also, we want all to know there will be discussion after the first of the year 2021 to review health concerns and perhaps consider some future ideas of a schedule for Ruth Circle for maybe 3-4 months.

Covid 19 Stay Safe Plan

We continue to be in Phase One of Christ the King’s Stay Safe Plan. The next meeting of the Stay Safe Planning

Committee will be held some time during the week of September 14. At this meeting we’ll be discussing updated

guidelines from the CDC which continue to change often. If there is any change to the plan, we’ll let you know.

Thanks for your patience!

Faith Formation this Fall

Page 4

As you may have expected, all of our education offerings will be different this fall, but have no fear, we have some GREAT ideas brewing that will allow for everyone to stay safe and healthy while also still helping our children, youth, and families grow in faith. Wendy, Deacon Billie Jo and a Faith Formation Taskforce were hard at work this summer brainstorming over the last couple of months and we are excited about the offerings we will be rolling out this fall.

Families of all ages and stages will be invited to participate in our Make Mealtime Family Time program this fall. There is something for everyone from toddler extensions to grandparent activities. Be sure to read more on the Kids’ Page!

CLUB, Confirming Lutheran Understandings and Beliefs, CTK’s confirmation program for grades 7-8-9 is going hybrid this fall! Our staff, parent leaders, and students all had good things to say about our spring digital learning, but also had fantastic suggestions to improve the experience. As a result, Deacon Billie Jo

will be launching CLUB Campfire Conversations this fall. Each month, students will have an opportunity for face to face discussion around a campfire in the CTK parking lot. CLUB students will also have access to digital learning the rest of the month. Read more about it on the CTK Youth Page.

Outdoor worship is a place children are always welcome! The addition of our outdoor worship kits will make it especially inviting to young worshippers! We plan to roll out our new worship kits for kids on the date of our 60th anniversary celebration, September 13th and 16th. Come early to make sure you get one! Back-to-School Blessing will be extra sweet this year and especially meaningful as we pray over our students, parents, teachers, and all school support staff for a year of healthy and safe learning. Join us at worship on Sunday, September 13th or Wednesday, September 16th to receive your Back-To-School Blessing Bag. If you can’t make it or plan to worship at home, contact us to arrange for pick-up of your Blessing Bag.

Call Committee Update Dear Congregants, Greetings from your Senior Pastor Call Committee. We pray that this message finds you in good health as we look forward to the time this month or in the foreseeable future when we shall see you all at church, including September 13th for our 60th Anniversary Service. Please consider this the eighth of our updates which will continue to be monthly at a minimum. Even as the church building is opening, our ability to gather in per-son is still hindered. We have met almost 50 times since our first meeting on January 9th, and most of our meetings have been by Zoom. When we last reported we were continuing in conversation with two Pastors. After reviewing all of their written information, listening to numerous sermons by both, and interviewing both twice formally and once each informally, we have released one candidate from further conversation. We have invited the other to continue in conversation with us, and they have agreed to do so.

We recognize you may be concerned by the length of the process. Please, do not be. We trust God will lead us to recommend a Call to you at the time the Candidate of God's choosing is prepared to Shepherd our congregation! Please feel free to contact us at our email addresses if you have any comments and/or questions. Please remember while we will do our best to make all aware "where we are" and "where we shall be going", some matters must remain confidential. The Call Committee prays that you all will be safe and healthy, Todd Lundquist, Chairperson Andrea Petzel, Vice Chairperson Kate Hansen, Secretary Amy Baack Darcie Jacobs Tyler Maas Dan Rickbeil

Got Propane?

In an effort to provide a safe and fun way for our confirmation age students to gather this fall, Deacon Billie Jo is launching CLUB Campfire Conversations. Each month, our 7th,

8th, and 9th grade students will have an opportunity to gather around a propane fire in the CTK parking

lot for faith conversations and fellowship. Deacon Billie Jo has been on the lookout for propane fire tables for our small groups to utilize. If you have a propane fire table/pit that you would be willing to loan us, or perhaps you have a spare propane tank you would be willing to donate to the effort, please let Deacon Billie Jo know.

involved are of universal application, nowhere more truly than in the design of humanity itself. The image we bear decides our destiny. Bearing God’s image, we belong to God. Prayer to God is what we were created for. Prayer is part of the wondrous likeness we bear to His Divine original. Prayer is the earthly image and likeness. The more we meditate on what prayer is and the wonderful power with God which it has, the more we feel constrained to ask who and what we are, that such a place in God’s counsels should have been allowed to us. Sure, school and even church look a lot different than "normal", but one thing that hasn'tchanged is connecting through CLUB! CLUB, Confirming Lutheran Understandings andBeliefs, is CTK's confirmation program for students in grades 7, 8, 9, and now 10thgraders. I am excited and gearing up for another awesome year of CLUB and this year isno exception! Different isn't always a bad thing and this year we have some exciting newthings to offer.

Last spring when schools went digital, so did CLUB! We barely missed a beat and have noregrets. Students learned, and so did I! Here are some things I learned about digitalCLUB. 1-Zoom, isn't readily available on many of our students' devices. 2-our studentsand parents had their plates FULL. And 3-digital is great, but we missed seeing each otherin person. Taking all of that into consideration, we have tweaked our plans for fall and weare going hybrid!

Digital learning- Monthly digital CLUB sessions will go out so that you can complete it inyour own time frame and on a Google Platform so it is Chromebook friendly! Want to do alittle each Wednesday? Awesome! Does it work better to knock it out one Sundayafternoon each month? Cool! It is up to you how you work through it.

Face-to-Face- We are so excited to offer CLUB Campfire Conversations this fall! I havebeen gathering up propane fire pits that our CLUB small groups will circle up around thisfall for small group discussions and fellowship time! One Wednesday each month, eachgrade will have a turn to meet in the CTK parking lot. Remember your mask, chair, andcoat! At this time, we are asking all CLUB 7 parents to take turns leading our CLUB 7campfire conversations. Keep your eyes on your email inbox for more details.
