Units of Measurement-DAY 1
September 6th and 9th
Warm Up-1
Warm Up-2
International System Units
Derived Units
• When we multiply one unit by another, we leave a short _____________ b/w unit symbols.
• When we divide one unit by another, we use an _____________ ________ or a negative index.
Example 1
Density is defined as mass per unit volume. Write the SI unit for density
Example 2
A Newton is defined as the force which accelerates a mass of 1 kilogram at the rate of 1 meter per second per second. Write down the combination of SI units which defines a Newton.
Other units…
Other units…• Smaller or larger multiples of these units are
obtained by combining the base unit with a prefix chosen from a progression of powers of 10. Most commonly…
Know this!
• When stating the value of measurement, the prefix chosen should give the value as a number between 0.1 and 1,000
Example 3
One nautical mile is written as1.852 km (kilometers)
---NOT ---1852 meters
This is OVER 1,000
Things to know…
• The SI does not allow the use of other units. Imperial units of measurement, as used in the U.S. for example, are NOT acceptable in the international system.
Conversions….
Length
Example 4
Convert 3540 millimeters into meters
Example 5
Convert 258 inches into centimeters
Example 6
Convert 15 knots into kilometers per hour
Example 7
Convert 54 kWh into MJ
Mass
Example 9 Example 10
TIME
Example 8
• Convert 4 hours and 12 minutes into seconds
Temperature
Example 11 Example 12
A short lesson on accuracy….
• When we take measurements we are usually reading some sort of scale.
• When we measure the length of an object, it is likely to fall between two divisions. So when we estimate our answer to the nearest millimeter, we may be inaccurate by up to half a millimeter.
