CORI Verification Days Wednesday, September 9 ● in person

Thursday, September 10 ● Zoom COVID-19 does not remove the requirement for all our volunteers to be CORI certified. What COVID-19 DOES remove is our ability to do it easily and without challenge. But we are prepared to make this as easy as possible for all who need to be verified for the 2020/21 year, especially our Faith Formation catechists.

For those of you with computer access, you can download, print and complete the CORI form ahead of time, but PLEASE DO NOT SIGN, AS YOUR SIGNATURE REQUIRES THE PRESENCE OF A STAFF MEMBER TO SERVE AS YOUR WITNESS. You can bring the unsigned form with you on the 9th for that verification WITH YOUR PHOTO ID. If you wish to schedule a time on the 9th of September to do this, you must email [email protected] with your request by Monday, September 7th.

If you do not feel comfortable with an in-person appointment, the Archdiocese has made accommodations for virtual verification. A Zoom meeting ID and password will be sent as we get closer to the September 10th date. Your CORI form will need to be in our possession NO LATER THAN September 8th. PLEASE REMEMBER TO SIGN THE FORM as the Archdiocese will NOT accept unsigned documents. Please mail to the attention of Rae at the parish offices.

Lastly, you can have your CORI form notarized. If this is what you choose to do, simply mail in the notarized form, again, to the attention of Rae at the parish offices.

ADDITIONAL NOTES:

If you do NOT have computer access, forms will be left in the ‘bulletin boxes’ that are attached to the (1) exit door at St. Mary Church and the (2) parish office door at St. John.

Forms need to be filled out COMPLETELY, including, but not limited to, the last 6 digits of your social security number, your license (or passport) number and your signature. Any incomplete forms received by us will NOT be processed as the Archdiocese will not accept them.

We will learn how Jesus is God Incarnate, fully divine and fully human. Due to the shutdown of Churches for COVID-19, parishes were unable to officially launch the 2020 Catholic Appeal this past March with an in-pew presentation. However, OUR PARISH COMMUNITIES DID NOT LET THAT STOP THEIR GENEROSITY. For an update on how each parish has performed, visit www.chelmsfordcatholic.org/2020-catholic-appeal for a personal message from our parish representatives—St. John parishioner, Libby Often and St. Mary parishioner, Lori McDonald. If you have not yet made a donation, you can do so on that same webpage where you will find a DONATE NOW button, as well as a letter from Fr. Brian.

Every gift, regardless of the size, is meaningful and can make an impact. Your participation in our parish Appeal is very much appreciated by our parish and the thousands that are served through the Archdiocesan

Central Ministries. This is our Church and when you support the Appeal, you support us!

Growing in Faith through Reflection on the Readings... First Reading: EZEKIEL 33: 7-9

The prophet Ezekiel is presented as the Lord’s “sentinel,” announcing both God’s salvation and judgement. How would you react to such a divine command?

Second reading: Romans 13: 8-10

Paul argues that “love is the fulfillment of the Law.” What does this mean to you as a Christian?

Gospel reading: matthew 18: 15-20

Jesus challenges his disciples to confront sin directly even when it occurs with those closest to you. Why do you think Jesus encourages this approach?

Last week we took on the issue of evangeliza"on, and we explored the reality

that through our bap"sm, we are entrusted with the greatest message the world could hear: God loves us uncondi"onally. God loves us without merit. God loves us without reserve. God loves us simply because He has chosen to do so. We are endowed through our bap"sm with the responsibility of sharing this message with the world. God so loved the world that He sent his only Son, not to condemn the world but to save the world. We have the rope that can save a drowning world and that rope is Christ. The problem we encounter is that the world does not know it is drowning. The world is unaware of its need for Christ. We must help the world to understand that having a rela"onship with God is essen"al to living a truly human life.

We are created by God to be in rela"onship with Him. When we choose not to be in rela"onship with God, we are rejec"ng our fundamental nature. As we said previously, Jesus, though fully and completely divine, was also fully and completely human. In his humanity Christ showed us how to live a truly human life; to live contrary to Christ’s example, even in the smallest way, is to reject what it means to live our humanity fully. We have a duty to help people see this and, as we said last week, when we refuse that duty we are responsible for those who may be lost to Christ.

So, how do we come to bring this message to the world? We must look to Christ and see how He did it. Christ’s proclama"on of the Gospel was not about miracles or exorcising demons. In many ways those were, at "mes, distrac"ons. Ul"mately, Christ preached the gospel by living the gospel. His life became the example we are called to follow. How we become evangelizers resides most powerfully in a popular quote of Saint Francis of Assisi: “Preach the gospel and when necessary use words.” Our lives as Chris"ans must become the embodiment of the message of the mission of Christ. Gandhi was once asked why he did not become a Chris"an since he referred to the teachings so o#en. He said, “I like your Christ. I do not like your Chris"ans. They are so unlike your Christ.” Many "mes we become the reason that blocks others from following Christ. We preach what we do not live and that turns people off.

Pope Francis has tried to show us that evangeliza"on is about changing hearts, not stopping ac"ons. We must

try to touch the hearts of those around us. However, we need to also remember that Christ did not change the hearts of all who were around Him, but He s"ll tried. We must remember that God will not measure us by our successes, but by our faithfulness. So, how do we bring Christ’s message to the world through our faithfulness?

We must start by cri"cally addressing our own rela"onship with God; we must look at the choices we make and ask ourselves, “Do my choices reflect God’s will in my life?” All the choices that Christ made were based on one underlying reality, “not my will, but your will be done.” The same must be true for us. If we want to lead others to live a life of salva"on, then we must be living that life of salva"on ourselves. And the life of salva"on is not about being “good” but about being faithful to the will of God. It is about all our choices and rela"onships being grounded in, and being built upon, our rela"onship with God.

To have that rela"onship we must be living a life of prayer. It is impossible to have a truly in"mate rela"onship with God if we do not communicate with Him. We cannot have a real rela"onship with God if we hardly ever speak to Him. And it is not enough to simply pass the "me praying when we are engaged in other ac"vi"es. Although this is not necessarily a bad prac"ce, we also need to set aside a "me each day dedicated to God alone, and nothing else. The Lord gives us 1440 minutes every day. No excuse exists that says I cannot give back 1% of the day—15 minutes—to the Lord. No one is so busy that they cannot find 15 minutes each day for speaking with God. Christ was a person of prayer, and to represent Christ in the world we must be a people of prayer. Simply put, how will you ever know God’s will for you if you do not give Him "me enough to tell you? How can you learn to hear what the Lord is trying to tell you if you are constantly drowning Him out with ac"vi"es? We must stop and listen, and like the prophet Samuel, say “Speak, Lord, your servant is listening.” And then, do just what He asks of you.

If you have any ques"ons about anything, please do not hesitate to ask me directly, or send your ques"ons to me at [email protected].

Please keep me in your prayers.

In Christ, Fr. Brian

Page 8: September 6, 2020 · 9/6/2020  · L ABOR DAY MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7th Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and

I would like to share with you my experience from the last weekend in August. But first let me say how grace filled it was. This column is in no way a diary of how a priest may be “busy” on a given day, but rather this is about how important the Sacraments are; how it is for the betterment of our spiritual lives that we have recourse to them. We read in Romans that “Where sin abounds, grace abounds all the more.” This line from scripture helps put into focus why we need Sacraments and the graces we receive from them.

While not a sacrament, my day began with a burial at 9 am. Even in a situation of grief and loss, the visible presence of the Church brings comfort to those who mourn. The prayers, words of comfort, and blessing of the family received in this situation shows us how important it is in our Catholic tradition that we have funerals.

At 10 am, I baptized a toddler. The great thing about this baptism was that the family was large, and they are a young family! The joy and grace they received from this first Sacrament was palpable. This young one is now beginning the journey of the Christian faith that will please God, one day bringing him to the joys of heaven. Again, the Church was there with this family for such an important moment.

At 11 am, I officiated a funeral home service. Much like the burial at 9 am, the presence of the Church was there to bring comfort and hope in a time of grief. In many cases, a funeral—whether in Church or in the funeral home—is a moment of an encounter. Pope Benedict XVI says that faith is about an encounter with Jesus Christ and that is precisely how

I treat these moments. I find that although families have chosen the Christian rites of burial, many in attendance have been away from the Church for a quite some time. I always see this as an opportunity to reintroduce people back to the faith in a gentle and comforting way, and make this an encounter with the Risen Lord.

At 1 pm, it was a long-awaited joy to Baptize, Receive, Confirm, and administer First Eucharist to our RCIA candidates. These sacraments were to have taken place at the Easter Vigil, but unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we could not celebrate in person. The trifecta of these Sacraments were beautiful and moving beyond words. My prayer for these candidates is that the Grace they receive from these Sacraments builds upon their nature, and helps them more fully realize who it is that God is calling them to be; that their journey in the Christian faith may be sustained and strengthened by returning to the Church for frequent reconciliation and Holy Communion. For me, as a priest, this was a first, and I was blessed to be able to share in this moment with our candidates.

After the celebration of the Sacraments of Initiation, I was called to the bedside of a dying woman. In the seminary we were frequently reminded that the Priesthood is not a right for any

man, but rather, it is a privilege. And what a privilege it was share to share in that moment with the dying and their family. Again, it is in moments like this that the presence of the Church is called upon to assist the dying on their journey to eternal life and pray for the comfort of their family gathered around. As I was leaving the home, the sense of blessing and grace was very much felt by all involved. Again, the Church was there when it was needed most.

After all that, I made my way back to St. Mary’s to celebrate 4 pm Mass. In the Mass, the conferral of the sacraments, and the burials, the Church is there. It always has been and always will be. But it is up to us to seek it out. The Lord does

not invade, but He invites. His love is not coercive. The Grace received in frequent recourse to the Sacraments is available to us freely, and without reservation. Let us approach them with joy and in the knowledge that these celebrations are a sign of the Lord’s eternal love to all of his Children.

Due to the current restrictions and health concerns presented by the pandemic, we have made some temporary adjustments to our adult child protection training requirements. All employees and volunteers who may have contact with children continue to be required to complete Protecting God’s Children training. Since we can’t gather together for trainings, this requirement can be met through ‘attending’ two online trainings: VIRTUS online PGC Training and Massachusetts online Mandated Reporter Training.

ONLINE PGC TRAINING www.virtusonline.org 1. Click on “First Time Registrant” 2. Click on “Begin Registration Process” 3. Select “Boston” from the drop down list Once registration is complete you will be directed to an online PGC training through VIRTUS. Upon completion of that training, individuals will be directed to a link to an additional online training on mandated reporting in Massachusetts. Both online trainings must be completed to be in compliance with child protection requirements.

MANDATED REPORTER TRAINING http://51a.middlesexcac.org/ 1. Send a copy of the mandated reported

certificates to Michelle Gee at [email protected].

2. Please send a copy of your PGC certificate to Heather.

As we continue to practice social-distancing, is there a ‘thought’ or reflection that you would like to share with us? If so, please email it to [email protected].

In the subject line, please reference BULLETIN ARTICLE, and within the body of the email, please let me know if, in addition to publishing it in the bulletin,

I have your permission to share it via Flocknote.

Thanks to all who have submitted and share with us! I believe I speak for all when I say that we truly enjoy reading your words. It is one more way that we are bound together in our faith community—a true showing that we are really more alike than we are different. I continue to invite others to come forward, as the Spirit leads... Keep ‘em coming!

Pandemic

I watch the loneliness erase the world I’ve known from every place. It seals past walls the frail and old to keep them safe though untouched, cold.

No happy space to gather ‘round, no joining hands or hugging found. Beyond one’s household, life is an isle. For those alone, a windowed smile.

Our isolation agony is what I feel, is what I see. Love from afar more lives to save. We must endure. God makes us brave.

And bless those who afford the care in hospitals and places where the sick and dying linger, wait for this pandemic to abate.
