Welcome to the fi rst Physician Hospitals of America Executive Summit at the stunning Meritage Resort and Spa, and to Napa
wine country. We are excited for you to experience and participate in this new meeting format for PHA. I am confi dent that you will be richly rewarded by the time that you spend here with your fellow physician-owned hospital executives and physician-owners.
I hope that you will take advantage of new interactive sessions including Lightning Learning Presentations, where you will have the opportunity to share challenges faced and solutions found; and panels on narrowing networks, mergers and acquisitions, and the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement Model.
A fact we are all well aware of is that our industry is facing incredible pressure and opposition from a variety of sources. To that end, we look forward to updating members on both legislative and regulatory affairs, the strides PHA has made over the past year, and future plans for our efforts. Keynote speaker Joe Theismann’s presentation on tackling change and keeping a positive mental outlook will be particularly relevant and inspiring.
Not to worry – this meeting will not be “all work and no play.” I look forward to seeing you on our vineyard tour and at the wine-blending event. Both have been meticulously planned. They will feature hand-selected tastings and pairings to ensure some enjoyable and well-deserved time away from the boardroom.
This event would not have been possible without the support of our Executive, Premier, and Supporting Partners. Please join me in offering a sincere “thank you” to those outstanding supporters of our industry and please take some time to meet with them and learn more about their companies while you are here.
I hope you enjoy your time here in Napa and take advantage of all that the PHA Executive Summit has to offer!

Joe Theismann is an entrepreneur and former star
NFL quarterback. Over his 12-year NFL career, Theismann played in 163 consecutive games from 1974-1985 and holds Washington team records for passing yardage (25,206), completions (2,044), and attempts (3,602). A two-time Pro Bowl selection, Theismann
led Washington to a 27-17 victory over Miami in Super Bowl XVII.
Theismann was selected as the NFL’s “Man of the Year” in 1982 for his community service and dedication to the health and welfare of children. He won the league’s 1983 “Most Valuable Player” Award for leading Washington to an NFL-recorded 541 points and a second consecutive Super Bowl appearance. Unfortunately, his career ended abruptly in 1985 after sustaining a broken leg during a game against the New York Giants.
Theismann graduated in 1971 from the University of Notre Dame where he received All-American honors and led the Fighting Irish to consecutive Cotton Bowls and was runner-up to Jim Plunkett in the Heisman Trophy balloting. In 2003, Theismann was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Theismann began his post-collegiate career in 1971 with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League, after being drafted by the Miami Dolphins and Major League Baseball’s Minnesota Twins.
Today, Theismann is a much sought after motivational speaker, author, and restaurateur, overseeing a popular Washington, DC restaurant that bears his name. He has spent the last two decades working for ESPN on their NFL broadcast and on the NFL Network. Recently, Theismann was named the recipient of the 2013 Walter Camp Football Foundation “Distinguished American” Award.

KEYNOTE PRESENTATION:THE CHALLENGE OF CHANGEJOE THEISMANN7:30 a.m. - 8:30 a.m. Salon II
Drawing from personal experience, Joe Theismann knows how to deal with The Challenge of Change. On November 18, 1985, he was on top of his game – a two-time Pro Bowl player and the most productive quarterback in team history. Later that evening, he found himself in a hospital bed with a compound fracture to his leg, shattering both his career and his boyhood dream. At age thirty-fi ve, he was faced with starting over his personal life and professional career. In this stirring presentation, attendees will learn how to tackle change by keeping a positive mental outlook and committing to a vision that guides you to the top.

As healthcare services, driven in part by the ACA, have concentrated into established networks, often controlled by a large hospital system, it has become increasingly difficult for independent specialty providers, such as physician-owned hospitals, to break into those networks. Networks are narrowing and providers are being excluded. This panel will address that issue and discuss ways that physician-owned hospitals can break into, work around, or otherwise deal with these networks to remain viable.
LIGHTNING ROUND PRESENTATIONS11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Salon X

This panel's goal is to provide attendees with an understanding of Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CCJR) and of the attitudes and tools required to be successful in CCJR. This interactive discussion will highlight the differences between prospective commercial bundled payment programs and retrospective bundled payment programs, both voluntary such as Medicare's Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BPCI) initiative and the proposed mandatory CCJR program. What are the differences between BPCI and CCJR and how can hospitals with physician-ownership thrive in this new environment? How do these programs differ in aligning incentives that might lead towards pay for value?

WINE BLENDINGFriday, October 2 • 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
THE FRANCISCAN ESTATEThe Franciscan Estate is located in Oakville, in the heart of the Napa Valley. Their 240-acre parcel of prized land features loamy, gravely, well-draining soil which adds great structure to their wines. Being located in the center of the Napa Valley allows their Bordeaux varietals to enjoy the cooling marine infl uences while still receiving plenty of sun and heat. When you combine the Franciscan Estate’s location with dry-farming techniques, the vines produce smaller, concentrated fruit, which builds wine of good structure, body, and texture.
During our wine blending challenge attendees will be divided into teams, each provided with the fi ve Bordeaux wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot. With the assistance of Franciscan Estate’s expert winemakers, each team will blend and label their own unique bottle of wine. The evening will conclude with teams sampling all of the newly created wine blends.
