Researchers Uncover Genetic Variants Linked To Blood Pressure In African-Americans : Findings May Point to New Avenues for Treatment, Prevention A team led by researchers from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) today reported the discovery of five genetic variants related to blood pressure in African-Americans, findings that may provide new clues to treating and preventing hyper-tension. The effort marks the first time that a relatively new research approach,

called a genome-wide association study, has focused on blood pressure and hypertension in an African-American population. Hypertension, or chronic high blood pressure, under-lies an array of life-threatening conditions, including heart disease, stroke and kidney disease. Diet, physical activity and obesity all contribute to risk of hypertension, but researchers also think genetics plays an important role. About one-third of U.S. adults suffer from hyperten-sion. The burden is considerably greater in the African-American community, in which the condition affects 39 percent of men and 43 percent of women. "This work underscores the value of using genomic tools to untangle the complex genetic factors that influence the risk for hypertension and other common diseases," said Eric Green, M.D., Ph.D., scientific director for the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of NIH.

"We hope these findings eventually will translate into better ways of helping the millions of African-Americans at risk for hypertension, as well as improved treat-ment options for other populations." In addition to NHGRI researchers, scientists from the Coriell Institute for Medical Research in Camden, N.J.; Boston University; and Howard University, in Washington, D.C., collaborated on the study, which was published in the July 17 online issue of PLoS Genetics. To produce their findings, researchers analyzed DNA samples from 1,017 participants in the Howard University Family Study, a multigenerational study of families from the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area who identified themselves as African-American. Half of the volunteers had hypertension and half did not. To see if there were any genetic differences between the two groups, researchers scanned the volunteers' DNA, or genomes, analyzing more than 800,000 genetic markers called single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs).

Rochester Democrats Call on GOP to Disavow Gubernatorial Candidate Carl Paladino Local Democratic candidates have called on their opponents to disavow Republi can gubernatorial hopeful Carl Paladino in light of his record of racially charged statements and erratic, offensive behavior. Paladino has admitted to sending e-mails featuring bestiality and racist images. He has also drawn strong rebukes from editorial boards and prominent Jewish organizations for making comments with anti-Semitic overtones.New York’s Republican Party Chair has said that Paladino’s emails are “com-pletely” inappropriate and “do not represent the views of the Republican Party.” In an open letter to all New Yorkers, former Republican US Senator Alphonse D’Amato recently called Paladino’s campaign “disingenuous” and accused the Buffalo-based millionaire of practicing “a destructive brand of politics that will divide our state.” “Mr. Paladino has acted with contempt and disrespect for his fellow New York-ers. People in government have an obligation to air their grievances in a way that is respectful and tolerant of others,” Monroe County Democratic Chairman Morelle said today. “Local Republicans should not stand idly by while the leader of their ticket spews hateful, inflammatory and racially charged rhetoric disguised as political debate.”“It’s hard to imagine that an individual hoping to hold the highest elected office in this state would demonstrate such a lack of judgment and decency,” said Matthew Zeller, now seeking election in the 29th Congressional District.

Bills Show Some Heart in Loss to Patriots The Bills played an inspired game in a 38-30 lost to the New England Patriots. Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick was 20/28 for 247 yards, but still showed us why he is an NFL backup signal caller. He has trouble making certain throws and both times when he needed to be precise and accurate , he threw an interception.

Fritzpatrick should not be starting at QB for any team in the NFL. Coach Gailey said, “Hopefully we can temper Fritzpatrick to continue to make plays, but not turn the ball over.”

“C.J. Spiller can make plays on offense and special teams, and showed you today what he can do.”

“Our defense could not stop Brady; we gave him too much time.” Why did the Bills not blitz him or shoot the gaps are a mys-tery to me. Donte Whitner was beat on both Randy Moss’s TD’s and to add insult to injury was run over by a Patriot back picked up earlier this week on his way for a TD (David Moorehead). Donte should be benched and traded before the deadline in order

to get an additional draft pick for next year. Why is John McCargo not dressing for the games after having a very good pre-season? Trent Edwards has finally been released. I’m picking Bills in a upset of Jets 24-21.

Michigan Street African American Heritage CorridorCommission to Meet The Michigan Street African American Heritage Corridor Commission, Inc. will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, 5 at 6 p.m. at the Frank E. Merriweather Library, 1324 Jefferson Avenue. The Commission was established by New York State statute in August, 2007 to develop a management plan for the corridor. The heritage cor-ridor is located in the vicinity of Broadway, Elm, Eagle, Pine and Nash Streets in downtown Buffalo, and includes the J. Edward Nash House, the Michigan Street Baptist Church, and the Colored Musicians Club. The meeting will be chaired by Commission Chair, Karen Stanley Fleming. The primary purpose of this particular meeting is to elicit public input, ideas and suggestions for the Commission to consider as the Management Plan is being created.

Block Club Community Council Announces Neighborhood Clean-up The Block Club Community Council will lead the effort for a community clean-up when the blocks of Winslow Avenue, Wohlers Avenue, Glenwood Avenue, Roehrer Avenue, and Storz Avenue are cleaned as a kick off to their Reclaiming our Neighborhood, Reconnecting our Community School #53 Initiative. The first annual clean up will take place on October 9 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Participants will gather at 9 a.m. at the Community School #53 gazebo, 329 Roehrer Ave. The Block Club Community Council was created by Charlene Caver- Miller and Maritza Ramirez of Winslow Block Club # 2, and Roger Wandji of Woodlawn Avenue Block Club. The catalyst for this effort is the reconstruction of Community School #53, 329 Roehrer Avenue, located in the heart of the community. Work is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2011. Mrs. Caver-Miller, along with the other founders, recognized the need for the neighborhood to be redeveloped in order to provide a safe environment for the students of Community School#53 and to make the neighborhood sustain-able by improving the quality of life for its residents. The Block Club Community Council is seeking volunteers to assist in this initiative. Organizations and individuals are welcome to sponsor this worthwhile project. For more information, please call Ms. Caver-Miller (716) 874-1709.

Buffalo, NY – Two MILK NOT JAILS Campaign Organizers Tychist Baker and Lauren Melodia , were arrested late Saturday night on Allen Street after a successful day of serving ice cream and popular education to the people of Buffalo. Members of the organization were standing outside of a local business when a police officer approached the group with marijuana in his hand, looked at the one African-American in the group, Tychist Baker, and said, “You dropped something.” Regardless of a lack of evidence con-necting the drugs to Mr. Baker, the arrest-ing officer asked for identification from everyone in the group, called for back up and proceeded to frisk Mr. Baker. Lauren, one of the other campaign orga-nizers, intervened, questioning what she describes as Officer Lorenzo’s unlawful targeting and investigation of the group and was arrested for so-called obstruc-tion of governmental administration. After searching Mr. Baker and finding

What Happened to the Ryce Campaign? Len Lenihan was re-elected Erie County Democratic Chairman by more than 1,000 committee members who voted during the party’s reorganization meeting last Saturday in the Hearthstone Manor. But Sundra L. Ryce, the person who had earlier announced that she was challeng-ing Lenihan, was not in attendance and was never nominated. Her major backers, including African American Democrats who endorsed her such as Mayor Brown, Assemblywoman Peoples-Stokes and Legislature Chairwoman Barbara Miller Williams – were absent as well. Arthur O. “Champ” Eve Jr., the Democratic Party’s vice chair, was among Lenihan supporters who questioned the legitimacy of Ryce’s campaign. He speculated that the whole thing was orchestrated by a small group including the Mayor. Others linked Ms. Ryce, a 35-year-old successful business woman and president of SLR Contracting & Service Co., to Republican County Executive Chris Collins.

MILK NOT JAILS Campaign Organizers Arrested on Bogus Charges in Buffalo

McLeod Shows Sensitivity, Fairness, in Recent Acquittal This is why we love Judge McLeod, and why it so important to have him as an Erie County Judge. Words like “sensitivity” and “fairness” are not unusual to hear during a campaign. But Mr. McLeod demonstrated recently that he is in fact that kind of judge when he found Enoch “Edsil” Cook not guilty following a run-in with the transit police after he parked his bicycle to use the men’s room in the downtown bus terminal. Judge McLeod said convicting Mr. Cook, 65, would have been a “miscarriage of Justice.” A witness who disputed the police claims that Cook became “unruly” on July 13 told Judge McLeod that Mr. Cook in fact acted “politely” after the officer claimed he had illegally used the restroom before pushing him violently to the floor. The Judge also praised the witness – Dorothy Fuller – for coming forward to dispute the police claims during the recent half-day non-jury trial. Judge McLeod won the September Primary in the race for Erie County Judge, but still face his opponent in November. A huge voter turnout in the community will be critical to his win! Don’t forget to vote. And if you’re not registered, you have until Friday, October 8th!

McLeod

no illegal substances, the same officer arrested him for unlawful possession of marijuana. One of the other officers called in to provide back up said to Mr. Baker, “If your friend hadn’t acted like a lawyer we would have let you go.” “Neither standing on the sidewalk nor asserting your rights is illegal,” said Lauren, MILK NOT JAILS Co-organizer. “A criminal justice system that unlaw-fully targets people or arrests people who have not committed crimes is unjust, unnecessary, and abusive.” Mr. Baker, MILK NOT JAILS Co-organizer, said, “Regardless of my posi-tive work in the community, at the end of the day cops still approach me as a criminal because of the color of my skin. Innocent until proven guilty is non-existent in today’s criminal justice system.” Earlier that day, the MILK NOT JAIL-Steam had traveled to Buffalo from New York City to host an ice cream social with local organizations Prisoners are People Too and the Massachusetts Avenue Proj-ect. The team served free ice cream to over 300 people outside of the Frank E. Merriweather Library and introduced

attendees to the M I L K N O T JAILS campaign, a new statewide initiative looking to create a new urban-rural rela-tionship, one that is not dominated by the prison system. The two were brought to Erie Coun tyHold -ing Center and released Sunday morning. They must appear before a Judge on Monday October 4, 2010 in Buffalo City Court, Part 2, 50 Delaware Judge Fiorella. MILK NOT JAILS is a political campaign to advocate for crimi-nal justice and agricultural policy reform that will bring about positive economic growth. It insists that bad criminal jus-tice policy should not be an economic development plan for rural NY. Come out and show your support !For more information visit www.milknot-jails.wordpress.com.

WORLD NEWS ROUND-UP

NAACP Seeks Freedom for Sisters The president of the NAACP urged Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, a Repub-lican, to pardon two black sisters who are serving life in prison for their role in an armed robbery that netted $11. Benjamin Jealous said the punishment did not fit the crime. Jamie and Gladys Scott were 20 and 19 respectively, when they lured two men down a road in 1993, where three teens struck both men in the head with a shotgun and robbed them, court documents say. The Scotts were convicted of robbery with the use of a deadly weapon. The teens made plea deals and served several months.

Black Farmers Rally :Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) joined the National Black Farmers Association at a rally on Capitol Hill, urging the Senate to fund the $1.2 billion settlement that the Departments of Judiciary and Agriculture announced after years of discrimination against black farmers by government agriculture officials. The House has already passed spending bills that include the funding, but the provision has been repeatedly stripped out by the Senate. September 23, 2010.

Tea Party Survey Show Black Voter Support EL SEGUNDO, CA -- PJTV’s Tea Party TV has unveiled the results of a special Tea Party poll, which revealed that about one-in-three (32%) African Americans who are likely voters would vote for a candidate supported by the Tea Party move-ment. “Questions of racism within the Tea Party have been raised for months now,” said Vik Rubenfeld, PJTV’s Polling Director. “Our survey found that more than one-in-three African Americans support the movement. Moreover, the data revealed that 32 percent are also likely to vote for a congressional candidate whom the Tea Party supports.” “PJTV’s Tea Party poll shows that, for many Black voters, race no longer serves as a rationale for supporting policies that undermine their economic interests,” said Joe Hicks, PJTV’s host of the Minority Report and a former Executive Director for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. “Democrats and leftists have attempted to define the Tea Party movement as a collection of angry White bigots. However, the PJTV poll of Black voters shows the wheels on the race card bus are beginning to fall off.” Poll Highlights: *35 percent of likely voters who are African American support the Tea Party movement and 17 percent support the movement strongly. *38 percent of African American respondents who support the Tea Party endorse the movement privately. 34 percent publicly support the Tea Party. *32 percent of African American respondents are more likely to vote for a congressional candidate who is supported by the Tea Party, including 14 percent who are very likely.

SOUL SOLDIERS: A new multimedia exhibit “Soul Soldiers:African Americans and the Vietnam Era” is currently at Western Reserve Historical Society, 10825 East Blvd. in Cleveland, and runs through Nov. 27. Call 216-721-5722 or visit the museum’s website for details. Just one month after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. publicly expressed his opposition to the South East Asia crisis in April 1967, Time magazine published groundbreaking articles based on interviews with Afri-can American GIs in . These two events helped frame the African American social and political perspective of the 1960s that went beyond civil rights. Soul Sol-diers demonstrates that was no isolated battleground; it was a crucible for African American soldiers’ emerging political and cultural consciousness.

5 Things You Can Do Now To Protect Your Immune System (1) Sleep deep, and enough: Lack of sleep may cause inflammation in the body, which can challenge your immune system. (2) Exercise more, stress less: Some studies show that even 20 minutes of exercise, three times a week, can increase the body’s immune function. Chronic stress leaves your body susceptible to stress hormones, which suppress the immune system. (3) Eat an apple instead of drinking a soda: Boost your immunity with more antioxidants (fruits, vegetables, and mushrooms such as reishi and maitake). Pro-cessed sugar suppresses your immune system. Did you know that just one soda can reduce your body’s ability to destroy bacteria? (4) Swap your cocktail for a green tea: The catechins in green tea are powerful antioxidants. In contrast, more than one alcoholic drink per day makes it difficult for your immune system to kill bacteria. The more you drink, the weaker your immune system. (5) BEFORE you get a cold or flu, ask your healthcare provider for an immune-support supplement: Both vitamin C and zinc increase immune cell activity. Consuming an array of mushrooms such as reishi, shiitaki, and maitake are good for a stressed immune system.

“Superbug” Beats ‘Last Resort’ Antibiotics Bacteria that are able to survive every modern antibiotic are cropping up in many U.S. hospitals and are spreading outside the USA, public health officials say. The bugs, reported by hospitals in more than 20 states, typically strike the critically ill and are fatal in 30 percent to 60 percent of cases. Israeli doctors are battling an outbreak in Tel Aviv that has been traced to a patient from northern New Jersey.

The cause has not been, as Western media would have us believe, inscrutable African ethnic conflicts, but the West’s hunger for their country’s vital mineral resources, which power our aeropsace, automotive and information tech industries. This October 17 thru the 23rd is the 3rd annual Congo Week.Congo Week is a project undertaken by thousands of Congolese exiles along with their friends and allies, in cities, towns and university campuses scattered throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and beyond. Students, labor unions, libraries, churches, local governments and community groups are showing videos and photo exhibits and hosting speakers to help break the walls of silence and disinformation around the Congo. Six million Congolese have lost their lives since 1997 to fuel the West’s hunger for their country’s mineral riches. Besides vast amounts of gold, uranium and diamonds, the Congo possesses 90% of the mineral called colombo-tantalum, or coltan. Coltan is vital to the production of capacitors, jet engines, power generation equipment and computers. Every PC, every Mac and iPad, every cell phone, game

No African American or Latino endorsed for State Supreme Court Monday, September 27th, was indeed a miser-able day in more ways than one. First off, the weather was cold and wet. Things were not too much better inside of Erie County Democratic Headquarters where the atmosphere for African American and Latino State Supreme Court candidates might not have been wet but it certainly was cold. The 2010 Delegates of the 8th Judicial District con-vened to nominate and vote for five democratic candidates for State Supreme Court. There were a total of seven candidates nominated: incumbents State Supreme Judges, Fahey and Dillon, City Court Judges Hank Nowak, E. Jeanette Ogden, and Betty Calvo-Torres, Lancaster Judge Mark Montour and law clerk Catherine Nugent-Panepinto. The ethnic makeup of the seven is four White males, one White female and two persons of color; a Latina and an African American female. Guess which two individuals did not get the nominations? You are right! It was the two minority females. At a time when Andrew Cuomo, who by the way, chose to run with an all White, male statewide slate, is now busying snoozing with Black voters in Harlem trying to get their support for what is considered to be a very close race, the powers that run Erie County Democrats are putting a political distance between the African American and Latina voters by ignoring the candidacy of their chosen candidates. It also makes it very difficult for these voters to align with Cuomo when there is no 'color' in the statewide tickets for Governor, Lt. Governor, Comptroller, Attorney General, and now, the five endorsed State Supreme Court candidates. Mr. Cuomo and his running mate, Mr. Duffy, were in Western New York over the past weekend. It is a shame that neither one of them whispered the words diversity and inclusion in a certain County Democratic Chairman's ear. Or, maybe they did and Lenihan failed to heed it. In any case, for more than a few inner city voters, the newly formed Freedom Party is looking better and better as a political alternative. One goal of the Freedom Party is to nominate qualified community candidates for statewide offices such as Governor, Lt. Governor, Attorney General, State Supreme Court Judges and, endorsing President Barack Obama in 2012; giving him an additional line to run on for reelection. All of this can be a reachable goal if the Freedom Party attracts over 50,000 voters to vote on the Freedom line in November. With a Freedom Line in place in 2011 and later, Judges Betty Calvo-Torres and Jeanette Ogden will not have to worry about being ignored or passed over, ever again.

Dear Editor: A friend saw a government van full of army guys (in uniform) go down Allen Street last week and rip down all of the posters for The March to End Imperial-ism protest. They didn't take down any other posters and one guy even re-affixed a poster that had come loose when he took the other down. A guy from the Pink came out and asked them what they were doing and they said they were taking down some "slanderous material". There's nothing especially crazy about the poster. It's an anti-war protest poster. The crazy thing is that a van full of army guys, in uniform, are removing protest flyers from poles. And that's OK? The last thing I knew, we had something called freedom of speech. As if the state of the U.S. government isn't enough reason to protest, we can now add the army trying to control what we see on poles in Allentown. When things like this happen we need to respond. We are going to have urgent meeting to extra organize andpromote for the week coming up. The March to End Imperialism! Will be held on October 1 at 3pm from Johnson Park and ending up at Lafayette Square. Come One and All! k of good jobs and corruption! We invite you to join us in mobilizing and marching to herald the truth that another world is possible! -T. Baker

Dear Editor: Thurman Thomas recent endorsement of Carl Paladino doesn’t IMPRESS ME!! Thomas is rich, he has a ‘microphone’, and he is looking out for his OWN pocket. Paladino will NEVER look out or govern for Working & Middle Class New Yorkers. If you think this man who is a Republican Tea Party will ever stand for us average folks, you are dreaming. I’m not rich, and I don’t have a ‘micro-phone’..but I do have my VOTE, AND PALADINO WILL NEVER GET THAT VOTE PERIOD.

-S. Miller

Friday October 8 is Last day to Register to Vote in November 2nd General Election The upcoming November 2nd General Election is one that people should not miss for many reasons. For starters, this is the first time in the history of this country that an African American and Latino-led political party is on the ballot and has an excellent chance to garner 50,000 plus votes to become a certified minor

political party in New York State. The Freedom Party also has a good chance of becoming the third largest political party in New York, behind the Democratic and Republican Parties, if enough of us vote on its line. Local Democrat and candidate for Lt. Governor, Eva Doyle, is heading the ticket along with Democrats Charles Barron of Brooklyn and Ramon Jimenez of the Bronx. We are asking voters to vote for our local Demo-cratic candidates such as Antoine Thompson, Judge James McLeod, Kathy Hochul and the nominated State Supreme Court Justices and then we are asking them to vote for Eva Doyle on the Freedom Line. New York State has almost 6 million Democratic voters. We know that most of them will

probably not be voting on the Freedom Line and therefore Andrew Cuomo will have more than enough votes, especially since the 6 million voters is twice the number of registered Republicans. We are also not limiting our request for votes to strictly Democrats. We are lobbying fair minded Republicans, Independence and Conservative voters to vote the Freedom Line this year. 50,000 votes for the Freedom Party and the election of Democrats this November will give all African Anmericans and Latinos something for the history books and something our chil-dren, grandchildren and their grandchildren can look back with pride. They will have been given by us, a future in New York State politics and a political legacy that they will have forever. But, in order to secure that lagacy or to vote in this year’s general election, one must be registered by October 8th. This means that the Erie County Board of Elections will have to have your voter registration application in its office and stamped by that date. If you do not have a blank application, you can register in person at the board’s office at 134 W. Eagle Street across from the city hall park-ing ramp or you can get a form at most post office branches, the Merriweather Library or you can call my district offfice 894-0914 and I will personally deliver one to your residence. Those of you who have not voted in years because you felt no reason to, please reconsider this year. Judge McLeod is in a very difficult race this time around because he is facing the same opponent he faced in September; however, for this election, this gentleman has four political lines:Republican, Working Families, Conservative and Independence. Judge McLeod only has the Democratic Line. It is going to take everyone of us who are reading this plus a lot more who aren’t, to get him elected. And remember, we have a rich and controversial candidate from Buffalo, run-ning for Governor. The beauty about elections and the democratic process is that he can only vote once, the same as you; and when he does vote, his vote is tallied as having the same worth as your; one vote! On Tuesday, November 2nd.,General Election Day, make voting the first time you do that day for yourself, your family, your community and our political legacy.

SPEAK OUT!

We Should be Mad as Hell Too… This year’s race for governor is fast becoming one of the most exciting races in history. I’m just upset that Governor Patterson didn’t stick to his guns and run for re-election; why he would allow his party to dictate to him to withdraw. But no matter who becomes the next governor, hard decisions will have to be made.

Paterson’s party along with other parties really did a job on him just so a Black man wouldn’t remain the head of New York State. I strongly believe that the Democratic Party along with Black leaders, preachers, civil rights organizations etc. all had a hand in letting him be hung out to dry. President Obama was dead wrong when he came to New York City and snubbed Governor Paterson and everybody thought he was open game after that move. Truth be told, Mr. Obama himself inherited a mess from former President Bush, and he’s (Obama) still trying to dig the country out of one of the worst economic conditions in history or since the great depression. Did anybody tell the president to step down or that he should resign ?In case some you have political amnesia, Andrew Cuomo is the

same person that threw his hat in the ring when H. Carl McCall ran for governor. Cuomo stepped into the ring and allowed George Pataki, a White Republican win instead of a top ranking Black man. And now he’s done the same thing against Paterson in allowing his hitch men to attack Paterson and his family only to get him out the race so he (Cumo) can run again. Makes you wonder what kind of IOU’s he has out on Black community leaders. Are we going to allow them to take the State Senate seat from Antoine Thompson because he’s getting too much power? Will he be next? See how they are coming after him lately? And no one is really speaking out for him either. I guess I’m the only one who sees this coming. And one has to ask, is he also being targeted by the organization he has been loyal to all of his career? Will he be thrown under the bus next while we act like we don’t see it coming? Will we go to sleep at the wheel in November or in the next two years as he gains more power and be able to bring more funds to our community? Not if I can help it. So despite the “Cuomo reality” – here’s a man who disrespected the community with the McCall double cross, and who is now running on an all White, all male ticket for governor - watch how all these Black folks get behind Cuomo in this year’s race, regardless of how he did and will continue to do us as a people. When are we going to wake up? Here’s a good indication that we’re ready to back massa. Last week a bunch of Black folks protested against Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino over those emails that he sent a few months back. But in the final analysis, it’s not about those ignorant emails, its about who will get us out this mess we are in. Who will really help the Black community and not the hand picked leaders that they think they can pick for us. Every time we need to be used the Democrats come to our community, pick a chosen few and give them permission to protest and holler racism. Well look at our community and tell me, is it racism that we are in the shape we are in? Was it racism when our Black mayor and others choose not to elect our first Black female family court judge or allowed our Black brother to be over looked for County and Supreme court a few times (only now to endorse him this time in the last hour). Was that a real endorsement or did it take him that long to get the ok? Is he really campaigning for him for real? And how many press conferences is the mayor going to have about murders in the inner city before he really steps to the plate? How many jobs has he provided for the Black youths for real - not 4 hours a day 7.25 an hour jobs. Mr. Paladino should not be the only one who is “mad as hell.” We should be mad as hell too but we’re too scared to speak. We should be mad as hell when the major media disrespects us; when the police disrespect and abuse Black men, women and young people; when our kids are being killed everyday; mad as hell because there are no jobs, a failing education system, no training programs and billions of dollars being spent on construction jobs right in our front and back yards and all we do is look silly. Where were last week’s protesters on those issues? Just keeping it real again.(Darnell Jackson can be reached at 570-9165 )

The Calculated Assault Continues You will remember that the Millions More Movement family has been advo-cating for justice on the part of the Quinn family, who have been targeted for the kinds of injustices that have always been dealt to our collective family.

You will r e m e m b e r our report of the successful operation of their day care facility for 10 years without any complica-tions, until it appeared that they might be

experiencing a measure of success. This is a torrid tale of jealousy and sabotage, and a 10 year vendetta carried out by officials in offices whose assignment is to support the efforts of those who choose to provide child care services. We began with a factual summary of events, which we will continue, in order to substantiate what appears to be one of the most blatant vindictive, criminal campaigns against a single family that we as advocates have yet to witness. On Friday we’ll be in court at a sen-tencing hearing in support of one of the Quinn family children, a hard work-ing and enterprising young man named DeMario. He is one of the young people in the Quinn family who was given a good work ethic, and a good example of self sufficiency in his mother, grandmother, and aunties. Alongside 27 year old Olga Casiano, he is one of the youths targeted by prosecutors who have allegedly filed false charges against them, claiming that they submitted false records for their family day care sites. Prosecutors say that they claimed to be giving care to children who were not on the premises, or to more children than were actually present. They have already convicted both youngsters of the salacious act of “bilking taxpayers,” a charge not likely to gain much sympathy in harsh eco-nomic times. Unless of course, it’s not true. From the testimonies that we have heard from the family, and from our own examination of the facts of this case against the backdrop of the quiet war being waged over daycare dollars, the Millions More Movement has found this family to be credible. We have found that elaborate plans are afoot to expand the daycare industry in conjunction with brand new downtown development, bringing a deluge of new employees, most of whom will be parents of day care aged children. You would have to witness the asser-tiveness, the knowhow, and the busi-ness savvy of the family matriarch, Ella Quinn in order to understand the drive to neutralize her in the theater of business warfare. In fact, the Quinn children have been targeted because they refused offers for leniency by prosecutors on the condition that they would say that Ella was the mastermind of a criminal operation. She is a mastermind, but not a criminal. It appears that in the wake of Olga and DeMario’s refusal to cooperate with such treachery, prosecutors made

good on their despicable threat to target and destroy the family’s children. The fact is, Ella Quinn and her hus-band have had the gall to raise children with the same assertiveness and kno-whow, making the family a formidable factor in the exploding daycare industry. They can go into an empty building, strip it, renovate it, and have it up and running in short order. –And if they can do it for themselves, they can do it for the members of their collective family as well. They can provide the kind of entrepreneurial support system for Black folk that whole agencies are charged with providing, but never give. Therein lies the threat. The Quinns are,

in fact, community minded. They have already set up after school and other programs that went above and beyond the call of day care duties, because they are not working a job. They are mothering our children. These trials are our trials. As the Millions More Movement continues to labor for our suffering community, we hope you have found us credible. We hope you will respond to the call to sup-port DeMario Quinn on Friday, October 1st at (9:00 am, on the second level of the county building- 25 Delaware in the chambers of Judge D’Amico. No matter what the judge’s decision, we hope you

box, every TIVO, VCR and flat screen TV contain coltan. The global automotive, information technology, aerospace industries, and of course the Pentagon will grind to a halt if their supplies of coltan suffer the least interruption. The rarely told truth is that driving millions at gunpoint from their farms and vil-lages in eastern Congo, and with them, any government that might protect their rights has created the ideal business climate for Western mining and minerals corporations and their suppliers. Wages, environmental concerns, local taxes and regulations in, and exporting the entire profits out of the zones ravaged and depopulated by invading Rwandan, Burundian, Ugandan armies and their private militia allies, are no problem. It’s a piracy and slave labor zone, the ultimate free market.

Congo Week continued

Running to Win New York State Senator Antoine Thompson has a reputation for working hard. But the rising young political star plans to “reach deeper” and pull up even greater energy going into the November 2 general election. All this at a time which

normally would have been considerably quiet on the political front after having won a decisive Primary. But as Thompson explains, in this unpredictable, often times vicious anti-incumbent political climate, anything could happen, and he’s not taking any chances. He still faces an opponent in November. “As the only progressive State Senator in Western New York and one of the rising leaders in the Senate, this elec-tion is about making sure that working people and diverse communities have a voice in Albany,” said Thompson. “Democrats are in control of the State senate for the first time in 43 years. We are finally securing funding for housing, youth and senior programs. I am very concerned that if people don’t vote that with gubernatorial candidate Carl Pala-dino running a campaign of hate, my Republican opponent has a chance.”

Overall, returning the Democratic majority to the Senate is critical. For almost half a century, Republicans controlled the state senate with an “iron fist” - cutting the Democratic Minority out of power and locking the people of New York out of government The Democratic Majority, of which Sen. Thompson is a key member, lists among its accomplishments for the 2009-2010 term: *The creation of 400,000 jobs through Power for Jobs, Green Jobs/Green NY and other targeted employment efforts. *Support for small business through a reformed and expanded Small Business Revolving Loan fund to provide $50 million in new credit for small businesses to create jobs all over the state. New initiatives to boost fair access to contracts and credit for minority and women-owned small businesses and reduce health insurance costs for all small businesses. *Rockefeller Drug Law Reform in the passage of historic sentencing reforms to reduce recidivism, increase access to treatment for addiction and prevent crime and save money for tax payers. *Empowered homeowner and neighbors to fight foreclosure and required repairs. *Created structure and strong funding to ensure more equal access to the courts and to justice for the people of New York State. In addition, the Democratic Majority has successfully fought for property tax reform, pension reform, and divorce law reform by breaking a 50-year block to make proceedings less complicated and more fair. They have successfully fought for Managed Care reform and reform in education; they fought to keep state parks open, get tougher laws on drunk drivers, women’s rights, domestic violence, and a Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. The Democratic Majority also credits itself with closing $31 billion in budget gaps in two years with “real cuts” to state spending for the first time in decades. Locally Sen. Thompson has consistently delivered to every community within his district and he urges voters to go to the polls on November 2 and return him to Albany so that he can continue the work he loves; governing for the people.(Sen. Thompson’s campaign headquarters is located at 20 Court Street and 1047 E. Ferry St. in Buffalo; and in Niagara Falls, 619 Pine Avenue. Volunteers are needed! Call 856-6030 for more information.

The nation-wide suffering for African Americans has just intensified with the recent unemployment data delivered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. It’s most recent report showed that while White unemployment only went up from 8.6 percent to 8.7 percent, Black unemploy-ment went up from 15.6 percent to 16.3 percent. This increase is at a rate that is 700 percent higher than the increase for White Americans. The numbers tell an interesting and sad story about the forgotten economic hard-ships being felt by Black people all across America. First, Black unemployment is nearly double that of White Americans. While the rest of America finds itself screaming in pain over unemployment rates between eight and nine percent, Black America is asked to remain silent about unemployment rates as high as 15 - 16 percent. While U.S. govern-ment officials are not acknowledging African American economic hardship, the United Nations is. As of April, the UN announced that it is investigating whether consistent Black unemploy-ment in America is a human rights viola-tion.
