September 14 Exaltation of the Holy Cross Early in the fourth century St. Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor Constan-tine, went to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ's life. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over the Savior's tomb, and her son built the Basili-ca of the Holy Sepulcher over the tomb. During the excava-tion, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. The cross immediately became an object of veneration. At a Good Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table togeth-er with the inscription Pilate ordered placed above Jesus' head: Then "all the people pass through one by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the inscription, first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, after kissing the cross, they move on." To this day the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the September anniversary of the basilica's dedication. The feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh century after Emperor Hera-clius recovered the cross from the Persians, who had carried it off in 614, 15 years earlier. According to the story, the emper-or intended to carry the cross back into Jerusalem himself, but was unable to move forward until he took off his imperial garb and became a barefoot pilgrim. Comment: The cross is today the universal image of Chris-tian belief. Countless generations of artists have turned it into a thing of beauty to be carried in procession or worn as jewel-ry. To the eyes of the first Christians, it had no beauty. It stood outside too many city walls, decorated only with decay-ing corpses, as a threat to anyone who defied Rome's authori-ty—including Christians who refused sacrifice to Roman gods. Although believers spoke of the cross as the instrument of salvation, it seldom appeared in Christian art unless disguised as an anchor or the Chi-Rho until after Constantine's edict of toleration. It is the wood on which the Lord, like a great warrior, was wounded in hands and feet and side, but healed thereby our wounds. News From The Streets… She Scoffed!!

By Monica Jones, co-worker Today after ministry my friend asked me what I did today. I told her about the portable shower for the homeless, the food, and prayers we offer. She scoffed, “You know they are prob-ably just taking advantage of you." My mind quickly went back to our talk this morning with one of our co-worker’s - Regina, who told us her discouragement when she had been deceived by a man she had helped. Yet, this did not stop her. Regina sat sweating early one Saturday morning with her car filled with valuables, real valuables like socks, underwear, and shoes! How they were all so neatly packed in those boxes by size, which must have taken her hours to do. I thought about Mother Teresa's words--if I didn’t pick up that one person, I wouldn’t have picked up 42,000. Also running through my head were words I had jotted down in my bible, "unless you care for the oppressed or poor then you are not really doing God's will." I recognized how the devil was trying to deceive and discourage us, and how he is often successful mixing our pride in with his lies. I thought about the very essence of Christianity summed up by Mary in Luke --"My soul pro-claims the greatness of the Lord - The mighty one has done great things for me and holy is His name." Isn't Christianity after all, to remember God and thank Him by doing His will? Yes, all of these deep thoughts passed through my head, but what came out of my mouth sounded not near as deep or phil-osophical. I simply told her, ”Jesus instructed us to feed the hungry and when we do it for others; he counts it as done to him. Lucas 15, 1-32 Reflexión.- Las tres lecturas de hoy son muy ricas y aparecen uni-das en un tema común: la misericordia de Dios. En la primera lec-tura (Éxodo 32, 7-11. 13-14) Moisés invoca para su pueblo infiel la misericordia de Dios. Y el Señor se arrepiente del mal que pro-nunciaba contra Israel. En la segunda lectura (1Timoteo 1, 12-17) San Pablo se muestra como un testigo excepcional de la Misericor-dia infinita de Dios: “Yo era un blasfemo, un perseguidor y un violento; pero Dios me trató con misericordia”. En el Evangelio, Jesús nos cuenta las tres parábolas de la Misericordia: la de la ove-ja perdida, la de la dracma perdida y la del hijo pródigo. Sobre todo la tercera parábola la del hijo pródigo, es un testimonio mara-villoso de la Misericordia de Dios Padre. Por eso queremos refle-xionar ahora, un poco más, sobre esta parábola y su riqueza. La primera parte de la parábola muestra la conducta pecadora y penitente del hijo menor. El camino del hijo es descripto en todo su proceso evolutivo, desde su salida de la casa hasta la miseria y la vuelta a su padre. Hay que ver que fuertes fueron sus pecados contra el Padre. Por la pretensión de recibir la parte que le corres-ponde de la fortuna paternal, rompe sus relaciones filiales con el padre. Porque según las leyes judías esta pretensión era imposible e insolente. Al hijo pródigo le falta así totalmente el amor y la obe-diencia a su padre. Y después emigra con su parte de la fortuna paternal y la malgasta hasta el último centavo. No es sorprendente que él así caiga también en una miseria exterior. Bajo el peso de esta culpa y miseria, hay que ver la actitud del padre: el padre no deja que el hijo haga todo el camino, sino que sale a su encuentro. Tampoco le deja terminar su acusación, ni le reprocha nada, sino lo besa como signo del perdón; le da sandalias, que distinguen al libre del criado; hace vestirlo con el mejor traje como honor extraordinario; y le regala, aun, un anillo - expresión del poder que le confiere. Así le sigue considerando como hijo y celebra con una fiesta su “vuelta a la vida”. En el padre de esta parábola Cristo quiere mostrarnos la imagen de Dios-Padre. Y esta actitud del Padre celestial se puede comprender sólo desde su amor paternal. Porque sabemos que todo el actuar de Dios es llevado y conducido por amor y mediante amor. Pero nosotros, quizás, con-fiamos demasiado en el amor justiciero de Dios: que Él nos ama en razón de nuestros esfuerzos y méritos propios. Contamos con nues-tro ser “bueno”, para recibir el amor de Dios, para recibir nuestra recompensa bien merecida. Pero cuando somos sinceros debemos declararnos como “siervos inútiles” (Mt 25,30). Así, debemos conocer siempre de nuevo, que somos pecadores, que quedamos con nuestras limitaciones y debi-lidades, que no logramos superarlas a pesar de todos nuestros es-fuerzos. Entonces comprendemos que tenemos que vincular nues-tra miseria con la misericordia de Dios. Y además sentimos: lo más profundo y lo más lindo del amor paternal de Dios es su misericor-dia. Es la imagen de Dios Padre misericordioso: Él ama a sus hijos no tanto por sus méritos, sino porque es Padre; Él no quiere más que amar a sus hijos sin límites. Un verdadero padre no abandona, cuando uno de los suyos está en la miseria. Al contrario, entonces

lo ama en primer lugar, porque sabe que necesita del padre, sobre todo, en esa situación difícil. Así, lo hace el Padre en la parábola con su hijo perdido; así lo hace el Padre celestial con nosotros, sus hijos. No quiere decir, que nosotros mismos no debamos esforzar-nos; pero no tengamos por demasiado importante nuestra propia obra. En el fondo sólo es importante la Misericordia de Dios, su amor y su perdón paternal. Por eso también la parábola del hijo pródigo debiera llamarse mejor parábola del Padre misericordioso. El Dios misericordioso exige de nosotros una condición; así como el hijo lo hizo en la parábola: que conozcamos y reconozcamos en humildad nuestra culpa; que nos arrepintamos de nuestros pecados y faltas; que confiemos en la misericordia de Dios; que volveremos a la casa del Padre. Es la misma actitud que el sacramento de la confesión pide de nosotros. En este sacramento se hace realidad la parábola del hijo pródigo; se muestra la cara misericordiosa de Dios-Padre a cada uno de nosotros. Así entendemos que la parábo-la del hijo pródigo y del padre misericordioso es la parábola, la historia de la vida humana, la parábola e historia de nuestra vida propia: de nuestra miseria y de la misericordia de Dios con noso-tros. Y meditando esta parábola, se despierta alegría, esperanza y consolación en nuestro corazón. Tenemos un Padre tan bueno en el cielo, quien nos ama a pesar de toda nuestra debilidad, más aún: quien nos ama a causa de nuestra debilidad. El testigo eminente de la misericordia infinita del Padre es Jesu-cristo. En Él se puede ver, como en un espejo, los sentimientos del Padre hacia sus hijos, sobre todo su amor misericordioso. No sólo enseñaba su maravillosa doctrina sobre la misericordia y el amor a todos los hombres, sino que también se compadeció de toda mise-ria, física y moral. Así Cristo manifestó en su vida una predilección por todos los pecadores, porque, como el mismo dijo, “no son los sanos que necesitan médico, sino los enfermos” (Lc 5,31). O como dice en el Evangelio de hoy: “Os aseguro que habrá más alegría en el Cielo por un pecador que se convierta, que por noventa y nueve justos que no necesitan convertirse”. ¡Qué así sea! En el nombre del Padre, del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo. Amén.

RECORDAR EL 11 DE SEPTIEMBRE Hace quince años la cobertura continua que la televisión hizo del derrumbe de las torres gemelas del Centro Mun-dial de Comercio en Nueva York fue algo intolerable para mí, y de igual manera fueron los choques y destrucción en Washington y en las colinas de Pensilvania. La incontable destrucción de vidas humanas era incomprensible. Visitar el sitio en Nueva York casi cinco años después reabrió heridas dolorosas y una gran tristeza se apoderó de mí. Un ataque en nuestra tierra, cuidadosamente planeado y lleva-do a cabo por individuos extranjeros, destrozó el sentido halagador que tenía de seguridad, y me provocó una sensa-ción horrible de ausencia de Dios. ¿Cómo podría mi fe católica ayudarme a sobrellevar esta tragedia? Yo sabía que ni la venganza ni el rencor eran opciones para mí.

Pero nos aplastaste… y nos cubrió la sombra de la muerte. Nos arrastramos por el polvo. (Salmo 44:20, 26a)

¡Oh Dios de los ejércitos, restablécenos, haz brillar tu faz y sálvanos! (Salmo 80:4)

El salmista grita un lamento que expresa luto por el pue-blo israelita, el elegido de Dios, el cual se cree intocable y por encima del reproche, y que ahora está en la miseria. El lamento es la agonía de una nación que se atreve a quejarse en contra de su divino protector, quien puede ser en parte responsable de esa miseria, pero al final clama a Dios por su liberación. En medio de los lamentos, la fe de Israel sufrió, como le pasa a la nuestra. Somos tan vulnerables como lo fueron ellos a la violencia y al odio que parece rodearnos. Nues-tra exigencia por una explicación de la divinidad caen en saco roto. Más aún, aprendimos del sacrificio altruista y heroico de muchos, dando testimonio de lo mejor de nuestra nación y herencia cristiana. Morir por los amigos de uno es el tema sagrado de nuestra historia personifica-da por Jesús, nuestro Salvador, y prolongada a través de los siglos en las acciones nobles y extraordinarias de hombres y mujeres en todas las circunstancias. En el 2001 nos unimos como una sola nación, compar-tiendo el dolor, la desilusión y la promesa de reconstruir-nos. Así como hoy lloramos y honramos a los muertos y heridos, ¿debemos interpretar esta emoción dolorosa en una búsqueda perseverante de paz y reconciliación en el mundo?
