September 27, 2016 FEAST DAY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL

The Congregation of the Mission, known as Vincentian Fathers and Brothers or Lazarists, is a community of priests and brothers founded by St. Vincent de Paul in 1625 for the evangelization of the poor and the formation of the clergy. This year the Vincentians celebrate 200 years of service in America. In 1816, 13 Vincentians landed in Baltimore with everything they needed for ministry packed in 80 bags of luggage. They were destined for St. Louis to help in the newly created diocese of Louisiana. They traveled by foot, wagon and crossed rivers and streams by horse and foot. The groups primary purpose was to establish a seminary, at first in New Orleans, and later they learned in St. Louis instead. It took the missioners more than a year to reach St. Louis, passing through Pittsburgh, Louis-ville and Bardstown, Kentucky. They arrived in St. Louis in October 1817, a town of 2,000 residents who had no resident priest. They began the work of building the new seminary, St. Mary of the Barrens, 80 miles south of St. Louis at the Barrens Settle-ment, presently called Perryville, Missouri. During the 19th century, St. Mary of the Barrens Seminary functioned as a lay college, a Vincentian seminary, a dioce-san seminary, a parish, working farm and a small academy. Over the last 200 years the Vincentian Community has served Jesus Christ in the spirit of St. Vincent through their care of the poor, seminary work in over 30 seminaries, their work in three uni-versities, and in parish churches, schools and high schools throughout the country.

LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES

The message found in today’s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch. We learn clearly in today’s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love, gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don’t notice their suffering. God’s call to us is much too clear to dis-regard for even one more day.

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Woe to the complacent. Their wanton revelry shall be done away with (Amos 6:1a, 4-7).

Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146).

Second Reading — Compete well for the faith. Keep the commandment until the appearance of the Lord Jesus (1 Timothy 6:11-16).

Gospel — The parable of Lazarus and the rich man (Luke 16:19-31).
