Warm Up: Day 1

At the top of your page, write “Color Theory.”

Draw a horizontal line across the middle of your paper.

Divide the upper part in half with a vertical line.

On the bottom half of your page, write the following:

Today’s Assignment

Today, we are going to make a color slide in our notebooks.

Supplies: Pass out rulers and place colored pencils in the middle of the table.

On a blank page, draw a rectangle that is 10 inches long and 3 inches tall.

Divide the rectangle into 12 sections. Try to keep the sections as even as possible.

Shade in the first square with a PRIMARY BLUE colored pencil.

Shade in the fifth square with a PRIMARY RED colored pencil.

Shade in the ninth square with a PRIMARY YELLOW colored pencil.

What color occurs when you mix blue and red? Place that color in the third square.

What color occurs when you mix red and yellow? Place that color in the seventh square.

What color occurs when you mix yellow and blue? Place that color in the eleventh square.

Today’s AssignmentNow, in the blank boxes, try to add

TERTIARY COLORS that create a smooth transition.

Label Colors as PRIMARY, SECONDARY, or TERTIARY.

If you finish early: Remember the colored pencil blending technique? On the empty space below your color slide, try creating a smooth transition between three colors that are side-by-side on the slide.

Wrap Up

Everyone: Return your colored pencils to the basket.

Supplies: Place baskets on the shelf. Take up the rulers and put them away.

Trash: Make a lap around the table and make sure everyone has cleaned around their seats. Empty the trash can, if needed.

NOTE: Tomorrow will be messy!! Dress accordingly!!!

Warm Up: Day 2

In the upper right column, write “Warm Colors.”

In the upper left column, write “Cool Colors.”

Look at the interactive color wheel and list sample warm and cool colors in the appropriate column.

What do all the warm colors have in common? The cool colors?

In the lower half of your notes, write: 4. Complementary colors—

5. Analogous colors—

Return to the interactive color wheel to define and identify examples of the terms.

Pastel Information

Today, we are going to experiment with mixing and blending colors using soft pastels.

Soft pastels are sticks of pigment held together with chalk and a binding agent.

When mixing colors, you can use a blending stump because your fingers will be very messy!

Pastel Information Remember—you will get messy. I’ll be

going around with baby wipes, but my supply is limited. Make sure you use them sparingly.

You may go to the sink and wash your hands as you draw. No more than two at a time at the sinks.

If the pastel stick becomes muddy, you can wipe it clean with a paper towel or the corner of your shirt.

Pastels are very soft!! If you bear down too hard, they will crumble.

Today’s Assignment Divide the large paper into four

quadrants. In the upper left quadrant, draw a

circle.Divide the circle in half with a

horizontal line.Further divide the circle like a

pizza by drawing an “X.”Using the red, blue, and yellow

pastels, create a color wheel of primary and secondary colors.

Today’s Assignment

Use the baby wipes to remove excess pigment from your fingers. Don’t throw the wipe away until it’s completely used up!

In the upper right corner, try to create a rainbow effect by blending from one color to another.

If you need to wash your hands, keep an eye on the sink. Only two at a time!

In the bottom left quadrant, draw something that is warm!

In the bottom right quadrant, draw something that is cool!

Wash your hands as needed. Remember—no more than two at a time at the sinks.

Clean UpEveryone: Return the pastels to the tray.Supplies: Put the trays back on the shelf.Trash: Make a lap around the table with the

trash can. Make sure everyone throws away wipes and paper towels.

Group One: Line up the sinks and wash up.Group Two: Go to the restroom to wash up.

Make sure you don’t leave a mess around the public sinks!

Once Group One is seated, Group Three line up at the sinks and clean up.

Once Group Two is seated, Group Four may go to the restroom to clean up.

Keepers—Take a wipe and wash the table of any excess chalky dust.
