FAMILY DAY Monday, September 22nd

Archbishop Leonard Blair is encouraging parishioners throughout the Archdiocese to eat dinner together as a family and enjoy each other’s company. More than a decade of research by CASA Columbia (the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University) has consistently found that the more often kids eat dinner with their families, the less likely they are to smoke, drink or use drugs. Family Day is a national initiative launched by CASACOLUMBIA IN 2001. This program reminds parents and guardians that what your kids really want at the dinner table is YOU! To learn more about Family Day and fun activities visit www.CASAFamily Day.org or www.archdioiceseofhartford.org. Take the time to share a meal as a family on Monday. You’ll be glad you did.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

Today Jesus is saying to us: “Why are you idle? Go into my vineyard.” Family, where “the last will be first,” is the “vineyard” entrusted to us in today’s gospel. Successful families are constructed by “laborers,” who work hard on family relationships, and not by couch potatoes.

TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

First Reading: Isaiah 55:6-9 Isaiah expresses an urgent plea that all should seek the Lord and turn to him for mercy. Second Reading: Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a In a strongly personal message from Paul while in prison, he says that he wishes “to be freed from this life and to be with Christ,” but he realizes that he still has much important work to do. Gospel: Matthew 20:1-16a Jesus tells the parable of the owner of an estate who hires workmen for his vineyard. When, at the end of the day, he pays a full day’s wage to those who worked only one hour, those who worked all day complained bitterly. But the owner says, “I am free to do as I please, am I not?” Jesus reminds us through this parable that “the last shall be first and the first shall be last.”

SPECIAL COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND

In response to the crisis in the Middle East where Christians and other innocent victims of violence in Iraq, Syria, and Gaza are struggling to survive, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has proposed a special collection to provide humanitarian relief and pastoral support for our afflicted brothers and sisters. The proceeds will be used to support Church programs, to aid persecuted Christians and to respond to the rebuilding needs of the afflicted. Thank you for your support and prayers for the victims of this crisis.

HOPES COLLECTION Pope Francis tells us that “Catholic schools, which always strive to join their work of education with the explicit proclamation of the Gospel, are a most valuable resource for evangelization of culture.” On the weekend of September 27/28, please support the “most valuable resource” of Catholic school education by giving to the HOPES Collection. Your gift will make a positive impact on those who are the future of our Church.

BOTTLES FOR BABIES COLLECTION On the weekends of October 25 & 26 and November 1& 2 we will be collecting the Baby Bottles. The Knights of Columbus are looking forward to another successful Bottles for Babies campaign. Over the past five years, the Church of St. Peter Claver has contributed over $60,000. Thank You!

Stewardship Corner ~ In today’s Gospel, the vineyard owner says, “I am free to do as I please with my money, am I not?” We are likewise free. Is a generous return to the Lord in thanksgiving for His many blessings among the choices we have made?

SAVE THE DATE!!! How Hyper-Incarceration Has Hijacked

The American Dream Wednesday, October 15, 2014. 7:00 pm

St. Peter Claver will be hosting a program for our parish and the entire West Hartford community addressing an issue which is of vital significance to all of us, criminal justice reform. Did you know that nearly 85% of inmates have drug and/or alcohol addictions or mental health issues? The Office for Catholic Social Justice Ministry of the Archdiocese of Hartford will sponsor a workshop on the need for criminal justice reform, on Wednesday October 15, 7:00 here in our St. Peter Claver Parish Hall. The workshop will feature members of Malta Justice Initiative who will provide insights from their new book “The Justice Imperative: How Hyper-Incarceration Has Hijacked The American Dream”. We will explore the current situation and what opportunities we may take as informed citizens in response. Malta Justice Initiative a sponsored work of the Order of Malta. More information on the Initiative can be found on our website, or at http://maltajusticeinitiative.org/ Advanced registration is requested. Call: (203) 777-7279 or email at [email protected] It is appropriate for our parish to take the lead in this matter. Not only are the Catholic social teachings of Pope Francis directly involved – so are our interests as Connecticut tax payers and citizens.

This weekend we celebrate Catechetical Sunday - a special time to bless the faithful and willing parishioners who have come forth to share the Word of God with His children! The Church asks God to send them on their teaching mission with His wisdom, grace and guidance. Our parish is truly grateful for the gifts each Catechist shares ~ their time, their talents, and especially their Gift of Faith!

It’s not too late to share your gifts with us! Our Faith Formation Ministry has three catechist open-ings in Grades 5 and 6 on weekdays. We are also in need of subs and classroom helpers. Please

call for more information at 860-521-2904. Thank you for being a Gift to your Parish!

Registration for classes ends on October 1st. Please contact the Faith Formation Office this week at 860-521-2904 or email at [email protected]. Registrations cannot be taken at first class sessions. Thank You!

“Grace was given to each of us according to the measure of Christ’s gifts.”

What I Learned in Faith Formation Class

Our students share the many wonderful lessons they learned this past year. This week we present the responses from the students in Mrs. Simplicio’s Grade 6 Class:

I learned about Cain and Abel and the Saints. I liked the Rosary Project. ~ Christopher

I learned to love God’s creation and to be kind to everyone around me. The best lesson was learning about St. Teresa. ~ Peter

I learned about the Bible characters and stories that were interesting and fun. I also learned about the Sacra-ments. ~ Hannah

I learned to be kind and carry on God’s work. I liked when we learned about the Rosary. ~ Sam

I learned about the descendants of Adam and Eve and the Jesse Tree. I liked the Easter project. ~ Andrew

I learned to respect God and Jesus - they love everyone no matter what! ~ A Student

THANK YOU MRS. SIMPLICIO

Catechist Orientation Gathering

Sunday, September 21 (Catechetical Sunday) 9:30am for weekly Catechists (Grades 3-6) 11:45am for monthly Catechists (Grades 1,2, 7-10)

The theme for Catechetical Sunday this year is “Teaching God’s Gift of Forgiveness”. In today’s Gospel, Jesus tells a parable about God’s justice & grace. Jesus is teaching us that we can do nothing to earn His generous love; it is given to any who are willing to accept it. Those who are “first” - those who think that they have done something to deserve God's love - will be last. Those who are last - those who know that they cannot earn God's love - will be first. Jesus gives to all His abundant generosity, compassion, and love!
