Success Story - Darrell Hewitt

Darrell Hewitt began coming into OhioMeansJobs Stark County after being laid off from Timken Steel in April 2019. Darrell came in quite often, getting assistance with filing

for unemployment, creating a resume, and targeting his resume to specific employers.

Darrell had some interviews but wasn’t getting any job offers and was becoming frustrated. In speaking with resource room staff about applications, he realized that in order to get interviews he needed to change his status for Timken from laid off to laid off, no recall status. This resulted in him almost immediately getting three interviews.

Resource Room Specialist Melissa McKissick recommended he take the” Ace the Interview” workshop when she found out about the upcoming interviews. Darrell attended the workshop and came in the following day to get some more interviewing support to make sure he was prepared.

On August 22, 2019, Darrell came in to let the staff in the resource room know that he had received job offers from 3 different employers. Allowing him to choose which job was the best fit for him. Darrell accepted the job at PCC Airfoils with a starting rate of $16.50.

Darrell stated that OhioMeansJobs helped him with his resume, interviewing skills, and confidence. He shared that he hadn’t been aware of OhioMeansJobs previously but now would do everything he could to share with others the great services and assistance he received. He said, “I couldn’t have done this without OhioMeansJobs. You’re the best kept secret in Stark County. If you’re looking for work, you need to be here.”

One-Stop Staff Attend Fire Safety Presentations

On Friday, August 9, 2019, OhioMeansJobs Tuscarawas County staff had an opportunity learn about fire safety from Lt. Mike Pearch of the New Philadelphia Fire Department. Lt. Pearch stated that fire safety

should be more about people exiting buildings safe and sound than it is about putting out the fire. Lt. Pearch then shared a 15-minute video on operating a variety of fire extinguishers and what they are made of and used for. He then gave attendees the opportunity to ask questions about fire safety.

The group then exited the building and went into the adjacent parking lot for a live fire demonstration and to learn how to use a fire extinguisher to put out a fire. The demonstration gave staff and partners the experience of properly using a fire extinguisher. Lt. Pearch lit a pan of diesel fuel on fire and each attendee was able to use the P.A.S.S. method to put out the fire. P.A.S.S. stands for Pull, Aim, Squeeze and Sweep. The importance of using this method is to eliminate the cause of the fire, not the flames. Lt. Pearch pointed out that the vapors, especially with diesel fuel, associated with most fires, are what continue to engage and enhance the fire. By sweeping the fire retardant at the vapors the fire can be more easily extinguished rather than merely pointing it at the flames.

OhioMeansJobs Stark County staff learned about fire safety and fire extinguishers from City of Canton Fire Inspector Chris Snyder and Inspector Everett Hill on Friday August 23. Inspector Snyder discussed the importance of having fire extinguishers available, both at home and at the office. He stressed that once you use a fire extinguisher, it is important to leave the building. Inspector Snyder shared that even though the OMJ center has sprinklers, it’s important to know how to operate a fire extinguisher He explained that a fire extinguisher is not only helpful for putting out fires, it can be used for self defense if you’re being attacked as they are heavy.

Along with covering the P.A.S.S. method of putting out fires he said it is important to aim at the base of the fire, not the flames. Regular fire extinguishers are able to be disposed of in the trash, or you can take them to any fire station and the fire department will dispose of them. Inspector Snyder noted that some fire extinguishers are able to be recharged once they’ve been used or if the contents have expired.

Stark County staff then had the opportunity to go outside and operate a fire extinguisher to know what it felt like to use an extinguisher.

All OhioMeansJobs Stark and Tuscarawas County staff appreciated the opportunity to learn more about how to safely use a fire extinguisher.

OhioMeansJobs Begins New Visitor Policy

In an effort to be more safety aware, staff assigned to work either full or part time at OhioMeansJobs Stark and Tuscarawas Counties will wear staff badges. The badge identifies the wearer as staff with their name

and photograph on the front, and a overview of basic safety on the back. Badges are required to be worn at all times while in the OMJ centers.

In addition to staff badges, all guests from other agencies using the facility will sign in and wear guest badges while on the premises. Visitors to the center who are accompanying a friend or family member using OhioMeansJobs center services will continue to sign in at the front desk.

Resource Center Manager/One-Stop Officer Amy Miller states, “having visitors to the center sign in will make sure everyone using the OhioMeansJobs centers can be accounted for in case of an emergency. “ The OhioMeansJobs centers completed a safety evaluation by the Ohio Highway Patrol, who suggested having badges for all staff assigned to the center, as well as a clear method of tracking visitors to the center.

Darlene Gannett worked full time as a home health aid making $10.00 an hour for the same company for seven years without much of an increase in pay or benefits. She drove a lot for her job, which

costs a lot in gas, as well as wear and tear on her vehicle. Darlene wanted a new job with higher pay and more benefits and was interested in trying work as a housekeeper. She'd spoken with a couple of people that knew of open positions but to apply she would have to use a computer. She decided to come into OhioMeansJobs Stark County to see if someone there could teach her how to apply for a job.

Darlene met with Resource Room Specialist Melissa McKissick when she arrived at OhioMeansJobs . Melissa remembers Darlene saying, "I don't have much experience on computers but if you can point me in the right direction, I am a quick learner.” Melissa showed her how to find the company website that she knew had an open position and had her begin filling out the information. There were a few times that Darlene would raise her hand to get a little more guidance, such as when she needed to upload her resume and to write a cover letter.

Darlene came in a week later to let Melissa know that all of her help was appreciated and had paid off. Darlene had gotten an interview with Aultman hospital as a housekeeper. A couple weeks later Darlene came in again to thank Melissa and let her know that she had gotten the job! Darlene was so excited. She said that she would not have been able to get the job without the help of the staff at OhioMeansJobs.

Darlene starts her new position on September 9th. She will be making $12.50 per hour and has been offered many benefits including vacation time, holiday pay, and 401K, which she had never had before. Darlene says that she plans to continue coming to Ohio Means Jobs just to learn more skills that will be useful for her.
