WELCOME

Welcome to Washwood Heath Sixth Form. As you start to take the first steps on a path which can take

you to an exciting university place and a challenging, rewarding career, we are really excited about

providing you with information about our Sixth Form to help you make that decision.

Post 16 education can be a bit daunting because so much seems to hang on what you achieve at this level.

However, we pride ourselves on the provision we offer and we are confident that if you work hard and

take advantage of the many opportunities available to you here at WHA you will achieve success.

We are proud of the achievements of our Sixth Form, and believe that the quality of teaching, learning

OUR ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

ACADEMIC

A Levels If you are a learner who is targeted 5’s and above in English and Maths and mainly

A’s and B’s in your other subjects, then we recommend you enrol onto our Academic

pathway.

• You must have 5 GCSE’s at level 5 or above including Maths and English.

• Here you will be able to choose 3 different subjects to study

• If you wish to study an A-Level subject that you have studied at GCSE, you must gain at least a Grade 5 or above in that subject. Some subjects require an entrance level of a 6 or 7.

• These qualifications will be gained by sitting external exams at the end of Year 13.

VOCATIONAL

BTEC Diploma If you know the career path that you wish to pursue and want to continue your

education through applied learning, then the vocational route may suit you best

• We recommend that if you are a learner who achieved ‘4’ grade in English and Maths at GCSE, then you should pursue the Vocational route.

• This route will focus on 1 subject and will be gained by completing Coursework and sitting external exams.

• Your final qualification will be equivalent to 3 A ‘Levels.

If you need to resist your Maths and/or English GCSE, you may do so alongside the

Vocational pathway.

Biology

Course Name: AQA Biology 7401/7402 Exam Board: AQA Qualification Level: A-level

Why choose this subject? Biologists are scientists who study the natural world and all the living things in it, from the largest mammals down to our very own microscopic DNA. They try to understand how animals and organisms work (including us humans), how we evolved and the things that can make us sick or improve our health. Biologists use this knowledge to do things like try to stop the spread of disease, track down natural resources, improve public health, animal care and conservation and work out the true impacts of things like pollution. Biology is a key subject for lots of STEM careers, particularly in healthcare, medicine and jobs involving plants or animals. The list is pretty long and includes: nursing, dentistry, forensic science, psychology, physiotherapy, botany, environmental science, zoology, geology, oceanography, pharmaceuticals, energy, teaching, science writing, genetics and research. What will I learn? A-level Biology is a stepping stone to future study, the specifications allow students to develop the skills that the universities want to see. The course will inspire students, nurture a passion for Biology and lay the groundwork for further study in courses like biological sciences and medicine. Biology is fundamentally an experimental subject. Health & Social Care Level 3

Course Name: Pearson BTEC Level 3 in Health and Social Care Exam Board: Pearson Qualification Level: BTEC Level 3 (equivalent to 1-3 A Levels)

Why choose this subject? The health and social care sector comprises two sub sectors, health care and social care. Health care encompasses all hospital activities, medical nursing homes and GP services, for example. The social care sector includes residential nursing care, residential nursing facilities, residential care facilities, domiciliary care and social work. Students are able to progress into work in the sector through degree programmes in nursing, midwifery, social work, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and pharmacy, for example. The Pearson BTEC Level 3 in Health and Social Care is intended as an Applied General qualification for post16 students wanting to continue their education through applied learning and who aim to progress to higher education, and probably to employment in the health and social care sector. The qualification is equivalent in size to 1-3 A levels (depending on the size of qualification you follow). The qualification develops a deep common core of knowledge, understanding and skills in the sector through mandatory content, and allows students to focus on a particular aspect of the sector through a selection of option units, including a route that focuses specifically on health studies. Students are required to undertake a minimum of 100 hours work experience as part of the course, to develop a better understanding of the demands of the sector and for students to demonstrate their commitment and interest in the sector when applying for further study. Health & Social Care Year 12

Course Name: Cambridge Technical Health and Social Care Exam Board: OCR Qualification Level: Level 2 (equivalent to 1-4 GCSE’s)

It is expected that this qualification will be an option for learners if they are unable to take a larger qualification

such as the Level 2 Certificate or Diploma in Health and Social Care, but would still like to study for this type of

qualification. While this qualification will not provide learners with all the skills, knowledge and understanding an

employer looks for in people who want to work in jobs such as Nursing assistant, Care assistant or Support Worker,

it will provide them with a good understanding of two of the most important aspects of this type of role, these are

working in a person-centred way and safeguarding. Having a good understanding of these areas could support

learners to apply for, and gain, employment in the health and social care sector in the future; this could be as a

volunteer or in a non-care role.

This qualification is part of a suite of Cambridge Technicals in Health and Social Care at Levels 2 and 3. Normally, learners would choose one of the OCR Level 2 Cambridge Technical in Health and Social Care qualifications because they are in full-time education but aren’t quite ready to study a Level 3 qualification in this sector at this stage. The Level 3 qualifications are for learners who want to progress into a health and social care-related degree at university or onto an Apprenticeship.

Information Technology (IT) Level 3

Course Name: Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Information Technology 720 GLH Exam Board: Pearson (Edexcel) Qualification Level: Equivalent to 2 A Levels

Who is this qualification for? The BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Information Technology is intended as an Applied General qualification covering 720 GLH and equivalent in size to two A Levels. It is designed for learners who are interested in exposure to a range of IT topics that will enhance their progression to higher education in the IT sector, a complementary sector or a contrasting sector and ultimately lead to employment. Learners will develop a common core of IT knowledge and study areas such as the relationship between hardware and software that form an IT system, managing and processing data to support business, using IT to communicate and share information, and computational thinking skills together with the principles of designing and developing computer programs. What does this qualification cover? The objective of this qualification is to give learners the opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in information technology systems, systems management, social media in business and programming. This will enable learners to progress to further study in the IT sector or other sectors. Learners will study six mandatory units: Unit 1: Information Technology Systems Unit 2: Creating Systems to Manage Information Unit 3: Using Social Media in Business Unit 4: Programming (synoptic) Unit 9. IT Project Management Unit 11. Cyber Security and Incident Management This qualification includes a choice of optional units (two to be selected), including: Unit 5: Data Modelling Unit 6: Website Development Unit 7: Mobile Apps Development Unit 8: Computer Games Development. This will allow progression to a variety of degrees when combined with other suitable Level 3 qualifications. What could this qualification lead to? When taken alongside other Level 3 qualifications such as A Levels, this qualification gives learners the opportunity to progress to higher education to study a BTEC Higher National in Information Technology, a degree in an information technology discipline or a degree where information technology related skills and knowledge may be advantageous, such as business studies. This qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as meeting admission requirements for many relevant courses. As the content is equivalent in size to two A Levels, higher education representatives have confirmed that it is appropriate to allow learners to choose their optional units from a wide range so that they can explore their own choice of areas for further study. The qualification supports entry to, for example: • HNC in Interactive Media. • BSc in Business Computing.

How does the qualification provide employability skills? In the BTEC National units there are opportunities during the teaching and learning phase to give learners practice in developing employability skills. Where employability skills are referred to in this specification, we are generally referring to skills in the following three main categories: • cognitive and problem-solving skills: use critical thinking, approach non-routine problems applying expert and creative solutions, use systems and technology. • intrapersonal skills: communicating, working collaboratively, negotiating and influencing, self-presentation. • interpersonal skills: self-management, adaptability and resilience, self-monitoring and development. There are also specific requirements in some units for assessment of these skills where relevant. For example, where learners are required to undertake real or simulated activities. How does the qualification provide transferable knowledge and skills for higher education? All BTEC Nationals provide transferable knowledge and skills that prepare learners for progression to university. The transferable skills that universities value include: • the ability to learn independently • the ability to research actively and methodically • to be able to give presentations and be active group members. BTEC learners can also benefit from opportunities for deep learning where they are able to make connections among units and select areas of interest for detailed study. Information Technology (IT) Level 2

Course Name: Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Information Technology 360 GLH Exam Board: OCR Qualification Level: Level 2 (equivalent to 4 GCSE’s)

Why choose this subject? We’ve designed refreshing and exciting content, that’s up to date, engaging, fit for purpose and suitable for the needs of your students in 2017 and beyond. To do this we’ve consulted with employers and industry specialists to make sure that your students will gain the right combination of knowledge, understanding and skills required for the 21st century. These qualifications aim to develop your students’ knowledge, understanding and skills of the essentials of IT and Cyber Security. Your students will gain an insight into the IT sector as they investigate the pace of technological change, IT infrastructure on a global scale, and the importance of legal and security considerations. Designed in collaboration with industry experts the qualifications focus on the requirements that today’s employers demand. A wide range of centre assessed units with practical and wider project-based assessment opportunities, as well as examined units on the Essentials of IT and Essentials of Cyber Security has resulted in a range of focused qualifications. Dependent on the size chosen the qualifications can complement a Key Stage 5 study programme alongside other post 16 vocational qualifications. Your students will practically apply their skills and knowledge in preparation for further study, apprenticeship or the workplace.

What will I learn? The content of this qualification has been developed in consultation with business and universities to ensure that it incorporates the most up-to-date knowledge and skills to enable progression to level 3 or an apprenticeship. In addition, employers and professional bodies have been consulted on the content development to confirm its relevance to current industry practice used in IT and related occupational disciplines. Mathematics

Course Name: Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Mathematics (9MA0) Exam Board: Pearson (Edexcel) Qualification Level: A-Level

Why choose this subject? There are many reasons why people choose to study A Level Mathematics. It might be a requirement for what you want to study at university (physics, psychology, economics, computing, and business studies prefer students to have A Level maths if possible). Since maths is one of the most traditional subjects a good grade in maths can boost an application for pretty much every course. Studies have also shown that people with Maths A Level also tend to earn more on average than people without it. Though this itself may or may not be a good enough reason to study maths, the skills it allows you to develop include problem solving, logic and analysing situations, which would make you more desirable for almost any job. The bottom line is, maths is an amazing subject to have at A Level and provided you have a solid understanding of the GCSE concepts before you start, alongside some perseverance and effort, you should be able to do well.

What will I learn?

New AS and A-levels in Mathematics have been introduced in England from September 2017 with the first

examination in summer 2018. They are fully linear. The AS levels will be stand-alone qualifications and can be a sub-

set of the A level content, but marks achieved in the AS will not count towards the A level. Course content can be

Course Name: AQA Physics 7407/7408 Exam Board: AQA Qualification Level: A-level

Why choose this subject? Physicists use the laws they uncover to develop new materials, machinery, and technology to improve our lives and help us explore the universe further, from computers to telescopes and spacecraft. Physicists ask some big questions, but they specialise in different areas and their work can be varied. For example, nuclear physicists study the tiniest particles of matter to discover what the universe is made of, whereas astrophysicists study some of the largest things – stars, planets and celestial bodies. What will I learn? Physics will help you to build up your problem solving, research, and analytical skills. With these skills you’ll be able to test out new ideas plus question and investigate other people’s theories, which is useful for any kind of job that involves research or debate. Psychology

Course Name: AQA Psychology Exam Board: AQA Qualification Level: A-level

Why choose this subject? Psychology looks at human behaviour from various perspectives. This can include social behaviour such as why people conform to more biological aspects such as ‘the schizophrenic gene’. This is a two year A level course which is broadly divided into two sections: compulsory content which looks at the various strands of Psychology (outlined below) and the optional specialised units (a choice of 3 from below). A level Psychology develops a range of valuable skills including critical analysis, independent thinking and research

skills. These skills are useful and transferable for further education and in the workplace.

Psychology opens many routes, including working for the NHS, nursing, social work, police, counselling, teaching or

specialising in an area of psychology such as clinical psychology, forensic psychology or child psychology.

• Paper 2 = 2 hrs 15mins worth 35% of the A Level

• Paper 3 = " hrs 15mins worth 35% of the A Level

Each paper will consist of short answer and extended writing questions.
