Boardwalk Talk

S&J, the board and volunteers on various committees are working on projects to improve Turtle Shores. Listed below are some of the projects being considered.

Please prepare for strong winds, remember yard ornaments, plants, toys become flying hazards. Please secure all items.

The pool will be closed on Sunday, for the impending storm. During wind storms, the gates remain open. Lock up your homes and cars.

The Seawall Committee has been working hard to continue the process to build a seawall to protect the Turtle Shores tunnel. As of the end of August we have had 2 contractors out to review our seawall needs. A third contractor was to be here the week of Dorian so we have move that contractor back a week. We are looking for the bids from these contractors so we can determine a price.

The cost of replacing North Gate and costs of adding "arms" to only allow one car at a time through.

Adding a street light for security. The landscape committee including Karen Doyle, Chris Rich and Nancy Francis

worked with landscapers to fine tune common areas by weeding and laying pine mulch.

A new book shelf was purchased for clubhouse first floor. Feel free to drop off books and take books for your enjoyment.

Message from the Turtle Shores Board

Page 8: September 2019 In This Issue - Sovereign & Jacobssovereign-jacobs.com/wp-content/themes/sovereignjacobs/images/show_pdf...Boardwalk Talk S&J, the board and volunteers on various committees

Important community updates:

A request from our Turtle Shores turtle patrol people if possible.

Residents on Atlantic breeze east facing the ocean try to keep their A1A lights lowered/yellow soft, so Not have confused baby turtles heading for their lights. There are several empty lots where the Turtle Shores lights are visible on the beach and it is causing a lot of wondering baby turtle hatchlings. Thanks.

Also a huge thanks to Patty Smith Michelle Simonds Norm Allman & all our Turtle Shores Turtle patrol people there's been a huge number of Nest this year Which is wonderful but a lot of work on their part. It's only $50 to sponsor a turtle nest and they totally depend on these donations.

Gators in our ponds. DO NOT FEED. Stay away from water. Please only take one car per home to beach on weekends. We have

only 27 parking spots for 298 homes. All guests should enter through NORTH gate.Must inform vendors. No children with diapers or swim diapers in the spa area. The spa

was shut by health department. Spas are not made for that material and your children are not safe in the spa. Their temperature can raise quickly.

Prevent Thefts. Keep your garage doors closed. Lock your cars.

PLEASE clean up after your dogs. There have been numerous reports of poop in common areas, walkways, and at the beach. The waste attracts other animals.

Please wear reflective or bright colors with flashlight while walking or bike riding in the dark. It is difficult to see people wearing black at night. Let's keep our neighbors safe.

Do not walk or climb on any dunes. Do not disturb turtle nests. Do fill in holes and knock down castles.

Please obey speed limit of 15 mph and watch for fellow neighbors and children on the road. Parents please talk to your children about road safety.

Please remember we have a leash law in Turtle Shores and on the beach. For safety reasons, do not let your dogs roam free.

Please help keep our neighborhood safe. Because pedestrians and motor vehicles share our roads, safety is of high priority.

Page 9: September 2019 In This Issue - Sovereign & Jacobssovereign-jacobs.com/wp-content/themes/sovereignjacobs/images/show_pdf...Boardwalk Talk S&J, the board and volunteers on various committees

Tree limbs and bushes that hang over the streets have contributed to some near missed accidents. For everyone's sake, please trim vegetation in your yard that vehicles would have to swerve to miss.

Put debris in containers for pick up in front of your home. Do Not put debris in road, it blocks the view for drivers and neighbors.

Please note: You must get approval from architectural committee prior to making any changes to your home or property. This includes color changes to any exterior portion of your property. Questions should be directed to Sovereign and Jacobs.

No parking on the road. If you need an exception, you must send request through S&J.

Please put down umbrellas by the pool before you leave. We need to take care of our facilities.

There are no Life Guards, so please monitor your children in and around the pool area. No Diving or climbing on waterfalls.

St. Johns County Civic Roundtable

A link to The St. Johns County Civic Roundtable (http://sjcroundtable.org/) will be in The Links section at the top of the

newsletter in future issues of the Turtle Talk. The Civic Roundtable is an organization whose members are St Johns County HOA's, civic

associations and other community groups interested in advancing and protecting the unique quality of life we enjoy in St. Johns County. Rick

Lofgren is our representative from Turtle Shores and is currently President of the organization.

The site contains the minutes of past meetings, contact information etc. It will provide information to our residents, who are interested, on activities

in the county that may directly or indirectly effect them. Land development, variance requests, road changes are some of the topics covered. Each month a guest speaker gives a timely presentation and

material from that talk is capsulized on the web site.

Turtle Patrol Update

South Ponte Vedra Beach Turtle News

The SPV beach runs from the Exxon station to the Usina ramp. (

Reef restaurant).

Our current Nest/False Crawl count on August 24th is of:

Page 11: September 2019 In This Issue - Sovereign & Jacobssovereign-jacobs.com/wp-content/themes/sovereignjacobs/images/show_pdf...Boardwalk Talk S&J, the board and volunteers on various committees

Loggerheads. 182 nests 121False Crawls ( non-nesting crawl)

Green Turtles. 7 4FC

Leatherbacks. 0 0 FC

Number of hatchlings that emerged so far:11,865 . This may seem

like a lot, but don't forget only one in a thousand makes it ot

adulthood!

Follow us on Facebook : Sea Turtle Patrol of South Ponte Vedra

Beach.

We have been very busy with nest evaluations. It is a very important part of our

data collecting. You probably have encountered surveyors emptying hatched

nests contents and counting eggs. Or maybe you were lucky enough to see a few

hatch-lings heading for the surf, it is always a privileged experience!

So far, hopefully the tropics cooperate, the success has been about 85%

emergence.

Unfortunately, the very high tides and rough surf of the last week of August, have

washed away a few of our nests. Let's hope Dorian stays clear of our beach.

It will inevitably have an impact of the success rate.

Remember -do not leave chairs or beach gear on the beach overnight.

-fill holes and flatten sand sculptures before dusk.

-do not disturb and keep your distance from nesting females.

Page 12: September 2019 In This Issue - Sovereign & Jacobssovereign-jacobs.com/wp-content/themes/sovereignjacobs/images/show_pdf...Boardwalk Talk S&J, the board and volunteers on various committees

-do not use flashlights or cellphone lights, keep the beach dark.

Do not let outdoor lights shine on the beach.

For adoptions and/or donations, you can either:

-send a check to: SPVB Official MTP Inc. (charitable nonprofit)

PO Box 1884 ST. Augustine FL.32085-1884

We are now in Hurricane Season. Please have a plan to have all outdoor furniture and trash cans moved inside if storm is forming. IF you are not going to be here, have someone designated to do for you. Do not wait until last minute, we do not want flying objects causing damage. Clean up your yards pre-hurricane, branches and trees that are dead, should be removed. Clean gutters. Protect what you have, they recommend hurricane strength windows to meet current building codes.

Condolences

Kimberly Morris, long time resident of Turtle Shores passed away August 24. Kim was the daughter of Carol Houston and the late John Houston, past president of the Turtle Shores HOA board and esteemed president of SPVCA in 1993. She had been in critical condition since suffering cardiac arrest a few weeks ago.

As many residents of Turtle Shores can testify, Kim was an animal lover and a wonderful pet sitter. You knew your pets would not only be well cared for in your absence but also loved. She was a very caring, kindhearted person and did not hesitate to go above and beyond the call

Page 18: September 2019 In This Issue - Sovereign & Jacobssovereign-jacobs.com/wp-content/themes/sovereignjacobs/images/show_pdf...Boardwalk Talk S&J, the board and volunteers on various committees

of duty. She was also a good friend to her neighbors, often helping out with gardening and other chores. Kim was creative as well and enjoyed trying her hand at gourmet recipes which she often shared with friends. She also served as a devout member of the Turtle Patrol years ago.

Please keep Kim's mother Carol and her daughter Meghann in your thoughts and prayers.
