Here are a few important Back-to-School reminders:
All students are required to have an updated immunization record
on file in order to stay in school. Updates include Meningococcal
and Tdap for 12 years old.
If your student has a health condition or needs special care during the school day such as
medication, treatments, or monitoring, please inform the school nurse. Individual health
care plans help keep your students safe and healthy.
Create a daily schedule for: waking up, eating breakfast, arriving to school on time, doing
homework, enjoying free time, having dinner with the family, bathing, and packing up for
the next day; and post daily chore list on fridge as a reminder.
Have a great year!

Dear Parents/Guardians,
This year Curtis Middle School is starting an initiative to improve our attendance rate. Our school
has 25% of our students who are chronically absent. Each month we will be sending information
on the effects of students who are chronically absent. This month we will define what is meant by
chronically absent:
If a student is frequently not in school, regardless of the consequences, there are negative
effects.
A student is chronically absent if he/she misses 2 or more days a month.
2 days in the first 20 days of school
10 days in the first 100 days of school
18 days in a 180 day school year
We need your help with this important goal. Because we know that attendance has a direct impact
on academic success, we want to see every student attend school every day and for the full day.
Why is This Important?
We want your child to succeed in every aspect of life and it starts right here with being present at
school. Attending school regularly is so important for your child’s success because it not only
helps your child academically but it also helps them socially as well. While some absences are
unavoidable, research shows that when students miss too much school, regardless of the reason,
it can cause them to fall behind academically. For example, missing 2 or more days per month, or
18 days over the course of the year, means they have missed 10% of the yearly instruction!
Some Great Tips to Get Out the Door
Help your children establish a regular bedtime and morning routine.
Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
Help your children get to school every day unless they are truly sick.
Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.
Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Call on a family
member, neighbor, or another parent to help out.
Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your children feel anxious about going to
school or show other signs of not wanting to go to school.
Other Resources
We want your child to be successful in school and when they are absent, we miss them! Let us
know how we can best support you and your child by contacting your child’s teacher, principal, or
school counselor at 316-973-7350. We look forward to seeing you and your child throughout this
school year!

Standards Referenced Grading (SRG)
If you have any children in Elementary schools in our district, they will
be fully implementing this new grading system this school year. Here
at Curtis, several teachers across grade levels and content areas are
piloting Standards Referenced Grading. This grading system focuses
on what our students can do academically, using proficiency scales
with designated targets. There are several opportunities for the
students to show that they have met the targets or are heading
toward meeting the targets. The targets are based on our current
Standards in Science, Social Studies, Language Arts, and Math.
Thank you in advance for your patience as we integrate the pilot into
our routines.
