KansasBack to

the ‘Point of Know Return’

By Peter LindBLad

The iconic Midwestern progressive-rock band, Kansas, is hitting the road again, this time to celebrate the 40thanniversary of their seminal album Point of Know Return.

Singer Ronnie Platt, who took over for Steve Walsh in 2014 following the longtime Kansas vocalist’s retirement, would love to

compile the set list for the tour. It’s probably a good idea, though, to leave that to someone else.

“That’s simply because our show would be six hours long,” said Platt, with a laugh.

Kansas spent most of 2016 and 2017 rolling through its “Leftoverture 40th Anniversary

Page 15: SEPTEMBER 2018 Sebastian Maniscalco PLUS! · Maniscalco who will be appearing in Green Bay and Milwaukee at the end of September. Contributor Todd Whitesel shares his take on our

Tour.” It was a massive success. Platt expects the “Point of Know Return” tour, which stops at the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee on Oct. 12, to be even bigger – a night of hit songs, deep cuts and fan favorites, climaxing with Kansas performing Point of Know Return in its entirety.

“Our preceding rock set, it’s just really cool,” said the amiable Platt. “And then, of course, we open up the show with a five-song acoustic set. We don’t take a break. We go right from the acoustic set into the rock set. So, I think the show’s going to end up somewhere around the two-hour, 15-minute mark;

so, use the bathroom accordingly, strap yourself in, get yourself an Icee and enjoy.”

Kansas has played the Pabst Theater before. It’s a venue Platt and company know well.

“It’s a good weekend for me, because I get to see my north-of-the-border friends,” said Platt,

Kansas (L to R) Richard Williams,

Billy Greer, Zak Rizvi, Phil Ehart, Ronnie Platt,

David Manion, and David Ragsdale.

a native of Chicago. “That’s a beautiful theater, which we have played before and it is breathtaking.”

Platt can’t wait to sink his teeth into the material, which includes the million-selling classic-rock radio staple “Dust in the Wind,” as well as other powerhouse Point of Know Return cuts such as “Paradox,” “Portrait (He Knew)” and one of Platt’s favorites in “Closet Chronicles.”

“I mean for years and years and years, as long as I can remember, I’ve liked ‘Closet Chronicles,’” said Platt. “I mean Steve’s opening delivery … those intertwining parts throughout the whole song, the dynamics and the dramatics of the song … it’s always been one of my favorites – also off Point of Know Return, and I’m telling everyone to zero in on the organ solo, and ‘Hopelessly Human.’ It blows me off my feet every time; what a great tune ‘Hopelessly Human’ is, just like all of them.”

Peaking creatively in the mid- to late-1970s, with shorter, tighter songs, complex musicianship and deep lyrical content, Kansas – now featuring Platt, original drummer Phil Ehart, bassist/vocalist Billy Greer, keyboardist David Manion, violinist/guitarist David Ragdale, guitarist Zak Rizvi and original guitarist Richard Williams – released its highest-charting albums one year apart,

coming out with Leftoverture in 1976 and Point of Know Return a year later. Both records were a big influence on Platt, who especially appreciated the vocals.

“On Leftoverture and Point of Know Return, Steve was at the top of the mountain,” said Platt. “On both albums, Steve … and not only Steve but (past member) Robbie (Steinhardt), also, and Robbie did a lot of singing on Point of Know Return. I really think it’s when they were at their best … I mean, listen to the bridge of ‘Point of Know Return’ … that’s just vocal craftsmanship at its best.”

Throughout 2016 and 2017, Kansas celebrated the 40thanniversary of Leftoverture in similar fashion, playing the whole classic LP and a well-chosen selection of songs from its vast catalog, including their 2016 album The Prelude Implicit.

“[In thinking of doing those kinds of shows], we thought maybe we could squeeze out 15,” said Platt. “I think at last count it was 80.”

Platt couldn’t have imagined such a thing when he first joined Kansas. He’d been a fan of progressive-rock for years, and as much as he loved British prog-rock titans such as Yes and Genesis, Kansas was the first American band he remembers playing that kind of music.

Growing up in Chicago, Platt

listened to radio stations like WCFL and WLS, AM stations for those “clock radios that only had AM,” remembered Platt. He recalls the playlists being very diverse. Platt gravitated toward prog-rock, as well as bands that had iconic lead singers, like Journey and Kansas.

“I attribute the development of my voice from listening to Steve Walsh and Steve Perry, endlessly trying to emulate them,” said Platt.

Still, Platt never imagined he’d get this far, although Platt comes from a musical family.

“I just got wrapped up in music my entire life,” said Platt.

For 25 years, however, Platt drove a truck around the streets of Chicago for work.

All the while, Platt was honing his craft. Opportunities came his way, but for one reason or another, he kept missing out on his big break.

“I’ve had my hardcore disappointments,” said Platt. At one time, he thought he was going to be the lead singer of Survivor, a Chicago national band. Then, in 2004, Platt auditioned for Foreigner, but Platt thinks they had their hearts set on Kelly Hansen, their current singer.

Informed of Walsh’s retirement, Platt heard from Kansas’ Richard Williams, who knew Platt when he was the lead singer of Shooting Star from 2007 to 2011.

It was a whirlwind courtship, as Platt talked to Williams and Ehart on separate days and then was flown to Atlanta shortly thereafter. They held a three-hour meeting, and “talked business for a whopping five minutes,” said Platt, with a laugh. “We were just telling stories and laughing the rest of the time.”

Back home in Chicago, three hours later, Platt was back driving his 18-wheeler. He got an email soon after from Ehart saying he got the job with Kansas. “Talk about things happening fast,” said Platt. “In hindsight, it happened so fast, it was like turning the key of my Kenworth.”

Fronting such a beloved band was a daunting prospect for Platt, who was scared to death initially, especially after seeing a VH-1 “Behind the Music” episode on Styx before his first show with Kansas.

“They were talking to Lawrence (Gowan), who took Dennis DeYoung’s place, and he was talking that he’d been in the band

a year, and some of the people in the audience were … let’s just say, not nice,” said Platt. “Here, I see this right before my first show and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. They are going to skin me alive.’”

The Kansas fanbase was more welcoming. Four years later, Platt has accomplished more than he ever dreamed possible.

From the last tour came a live record, 2017’s Leftoverture: Live & Beyond. To Platt, getting the chance to work with Kansas in the studio on The Prelude Implicit, to play such legendary records as Leftoverture and Point of Know Return in concert and appear on a live Kansas album still feels surreal.

“When I got the job in the band, I never expected this band to be doing another studio album of new music,” said Platt. “I never expected Kansas to be putting a live album out and then to be doing a second studio album … it really is a testament to their love for music to keep the ball rolling like this. There’s really no end in sight.”

Kansas will take January and maybe a portion of February off, before beginning work on another studio album. Platt said it will probably be released by the end of next year. And then, Platt figures Kansas will go out and promote that album.

“Talk about the gift that keeps on giving,” said Platt. O&a

By Peter LindBLad

Answering the doorbell used to be no big deal. Nowadays, it causes a panic. Who’s on other side? Why are they here? Is it a serial killer?

In a bit for his 2016 “Why Would People Do That?” special, hard-working comedian Sebastian Maniscalco describes how exciting it was to receive visitors at home when he was young. His big Italian family would, without hesitation, welcome them with open arms, offering them food and drink in abundance.

Everybody’s more cautious now, more fearful. Maniscalco relishes pointing out the differences between modern-day living and a past that was more innocent and naïve in his stand-up routines.

“The most obvious is technology,” said Maniscalco. “Growing up, I remember going out to a restaurant with my parents and they used to give me sugar packets to play with. Now I

go to a restaurant and it looks like an Apple store. Every kid is on a smart phone or tablet, or maybe even both.”

That makes him feel a little wistful.

“It’s kind of sad when you look at families out in public and see how detached they are from one another,” continued Maniscalco. “My wife and I have discussed limiting technology in our family so we can connect more on a human level. I know technology is the way of the world; however, I think it is best utilized in small doses.”

It is almost impossible to take your eyes off Maniscalco when he’s onstage. Known for his attention-grabbing, wildly physical brand of comedy, Maniscalco will appear at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee on Sept. 27 and the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts in Green Bay Sept. 29 as part of his “Stay Hungry 2018” tour. Being from Chicago, where he was born and raised,

Maniscalco is well-acquainted with Wisconsin.

“Growing up I spent a lot of summers up in Wisconsin in Lake Geneva and Wisconsin Dells,” said Maniscalco. “We shared a lot of great memories there, so performing in Wisconsin is very nostalgic for me.”

The accolades have been pouring for Maniscalco in recent years, as Esquire magazine described him as “one of the funniest comics working stand-up today.” He also made Forbes magazine’s list of “The World’s Highest Paid Comedians.” His success didn’t come easily.

Early on in adulthood, Maniscalco worked as a waiter at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. To sharpen his comedic timing and material, Maniscalco would race over to the Comedy Store while on a break.

“I just remember thinking that I did not want waiting tables to interfere with my stage time, said

Maniscalco. “I was so focused on stand-up comedy that it just seemed normal for me to work in a set during a shift at the Four Seasons. I never wanted to miss out on an opportunity to go onstage, or possibly miss an opportunity that someone was going to be in the audience at any given night who could potentially help me out in my career.”

Famed comedian Andrew Dice Clay happened to catch his act. Clay gave Maniscalco his first break, taking him under his wing and then out on the road. Maniscalco’s career really took off after actor Vince Vaughn put him in his “Wild West Comedy Show.”

Long before all that, though, Maniscalco used to entertain at his family’s dinner table as a precocious kid. He got a lot of laughs, as did others.

“My family was always telling stories growing up,” said Maniscalco. “My parents, my sister and I always had a natural way of being funny. It was never forced or corny or calculated, it was just funny. There were a lot of great memories made around the dinner table and food was always the glue that brought my family together.”

It was good training for the comic, who’s become a masterful storyteller.

“Telling stories is all about timing,” said Maniscalco. “Knowing when to pause. Knowing when to give a facial expression. Knowing how to be expressive at certain times during the story. There’s a lot that goes into telling a well-crafted story. Also, when telling a story, you need complete attention on you at all times.”

That’s usually not a problem for Maniscalco, who is anything

but boring onstage. Over time, he’s become more boisterous.

“I wasn’t always as physical as I am today,” said Maniscalco. “The physicality in my act happened organically over time. I noticed audiences not only gravitating toward what I was saying, but how I was saying it. I never really plan out how physical I’m going be, it just happens naturally as I tell a story.”

It’s a formula that’s working. Other network specials such as 2014’s “Aren’t You Embarrassed?” and 2012’s “What’s Wrong with People?” have made him a household name. Picked as the 2016 Just for Laughs Comedian of the Year, Maniscalco has appeared on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and Jerry Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee,” while also making multiple visits to “CONAN,” “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,”

“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and “Late Night with Seth Meyers.”

Another outlet for his brand of humor is the popular Sirius XM show “The Pete and Sebastian Show,” with Pete Correale. The two have an easy chemistry.

“Every week I look forward to doing the Podcast with Pete,” said Maniscalco. “We are so different and I think that’s why the Podcast really works. He has an unbelievable comedic mind and he adds a lot of colorful commentary to my funny experiences. Pete surprises me every show with something that I never knew about him. I wish Pete and I still lived in the same city because he is as much fun off the show as he is on.”

While Maniscalco continues to have a good time, his work load

is increasing. His memoir, “Stay Hungry,” was published in February 2018, and it includes a series of uproarious essays based on his life experiences.

“I felt I had a lot of stories to tell people,” said Maniscalco. “I wanted to inform people about the ups and downs in my journey to becoming a stand-up comedian. I never thought I would write a book, but when I reflected on the last 20 years of my life I thought people would get a kick out of reading about who I am and where I come from. It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, but I’m glad I accomplished it. My wife and I enjoyed the process and I’m looking to write a second book in the near future.”

Meanwhile, his acting career is also taking off. This year, Maniscalco appeared in the movie “TAG” with Jon Hamm, Ed Helms and Jeremy Renner. Even bigger productions will see the light of day in 2019, when Maniscalco takes a turn in iconic filmmaker Martin Scorcese’s “The Irishman,” along with Robert DeNiro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, among others.

“I grew up being a fan of Martin Scorsese and to be in a movie in which he is directing was very surreal for me,” said Maniscalco. “I like acting specifically in dramatic roles, because it gives me an opportunity to tap in to another side of myself that you typically don’t see when I do stand-up comedy. I’m generally a serious guy, so dramatic types of movie roles do not seem to be much of a stretch from who I really am. I’m super excited to see this movie and I hope to do more in the near future.”

Before that, fans will get a lot more of Maniscalco in 2018.

“I’ll be out on tour through the end of the year hitting over 30 cities across the country,” said Maniscalco. “I also have two films premiering this fall – ‘Green Book,’ which features Mahershala Ali and Viggo Mortensen, will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 11, and on Sept. 28 ‘Cruise,’ written and directed by Robert D. Siegel, the writer behind ‘The Wrestler’ and ‘The Founder,’ will be released on digital and streaming services. This November I’ll receive Billboard’s first-ever Live Comedy Award at the Billboard Live Awards which I’m so honored and excited about. This spring I did five sold-out shows at Radio City Music Hall which we taped for Netflix – that special will be out early 2019.”

It seems there’s no rest ahead for Maniscalco. O&a

The Drift Inn has been making its signature chili from a recipe dating back to 1978. That’s when former co-owner Carol Wilson started making chili here using her own special blend of seasonings. Expect a meaty bowl of chili with just enough spice to perk up your taste buds without setting your tongue ablaze. Get Drift Inn chili by the bowl, ladled on a hot dog, french fries or over spaghetti. (Locals order it

with spaghetti!) You can tweak it with cheese, onions and sour cream. Or add some fire with Tabasco or crushed pepper.

Chili John’s is a Titletown culinary landmark, serving its venerable chili since 1913, when Lithuanian immigrant John Isaac opened his first restaurant. And what a chili it is! Like Cincinnati-style chili, this uniquely seasoned meat sauce is the

perfect topper for a plate of spaghetti. Where it differs is the introduction of spicy chili oil, which gives it the real Chili John’s flavor. Add beans, shredded cheddar, raw onions, sour cream or jalapenos to suit your taste. Like it spicy? More meat=more heat at Chili John’s.

Chili TIME

by toDD Whitesel

When it comes to food, Wisconsin might be best known for butter burgers, bratwurst and cheese, but the Badger State also has a strong chili culture. You’ll find bowls of savory, well-seasoned chili at potlucks, tailgate parties and kitchens across the state. On a crisp autumn day or in the deep freeze of winter, nothing warms you up better than a bowl of chili con (or non) carne.

Don’t feel like cooking? There are many establishments across Wisconsin - from chili parlors and burger joints to cafes and diners - that serve a fine bowl of chili to hungry customers. Here are some top spots to enjoy a rib-sticking cup or bowl of chili.

That’s because this Green Bay burger joint does both to perfection. Diners have been dropping in at Al’s since 1934 for no-nonsense food, including the estimable chili. Get it plain or loaded with cheese, onions and sour cream.

When your name is “Real Chili,” you better serve up some real chili! And that’s just what this beloved Milwaukee parlor has been doing since 1931. Whether you crave mild, medium or hot chili, hunker down for a true taste of Wisconsin. Order the “Marquette Special,” and you’ll get a bowl of spaghetti topped with beans, chili and cheese. Like it hot? Add more meat. Need more toppings? Toss on chopped raw onions, oyster crackers and sour cream. Maybe a splash of cider vinegar? Mix it all together and dig in like a local.

advertisement and other slices of Americana. Mazo’s fresh-ground hamburgers get top billing here, but locals know you can get a tasty bowl of homemade chili (offered in season) here, too. The standard beef-and-bean affair has a taste that belies its simplicity and is worth the trip alone.

Perched along the shore of the Rock River, between the cities of Jefferson and Fort Atkinson, is a small dark building with a large sign on roof proclaiming EDGEWATER. The parking lot is relatively small, and the building itself doesn’t look fancy

from the outside, but please - do not judge this book by its cover.

Once you’ve found a space to park, you open the screen door and walk in through the small entryway to be greeted by a pleasant older gentleman, who turns out to be the owner’s father. He will check you in if

you’ve made a reservation, or let you know how long the wait will be if you have not. If he’s not particularly busy, he may even offer you a tour of the bustling restaurant.

The bar area is dark and windowless, with colorful lighting to provide a fun and

cozy atmosphere. The bar itself is beautifully stained mahogany, and all of the woodwork in the restaurant appears original and in excellent condition.

Plunk yourself down on one of the bar stools, or at one of the bar tables, and let one of the excellent bartenders serve you up a nice drink. The old fashioneds are 100 percent on point here. They’re hand muddled and made with sugar cubes and Door County cherries. Edgewater also has a nice wine list and a selection of bottle and tap beers, including one brewed in-house.

Once your table is ready, you’ll be led through to either the dining room or the enclosed porch. The dining room is dominated by a huge stone fireplace, with the words HEARTH O’ CHEER on it. There are tables in front of the fireplace, but the most unique feature of the dining room are the intimate nooks off to each side of the hearth. These tables are not hidden completely, but they are basically invisible from most angles in the restaurant.

If you are seated on the porch, there are two things you should know: 1) This was, at one point, an actual porch, so the f loor slopes down away from the main part of the building. It’s actually quite charming and won’t cause any issues with your meal. 2) The ceiling seems to slant down at a steeper angle than the f loor, so if you’re taller than about 5’5, you’ll

want to mind your head.During the summer months,

the porch offers the best seats in the house, with front row views of the Rock River from its large windows. There are also hummingbird feeders and regular bird feeders just outside the windows, attracting all types of birds to add to the “out in the country” feeling, even though

you’re only about 10 minutes from civilization in either direction.

Once you’ve been seated, you can take some time to check out the menu. Vicki and Bill Millis, the owners of Edgewater, offer farm-to-table fare, with fresh meats and produce coming from local family farms. Plus, Vicki and her son, Marcus, who is the head chef, use family recipes to ensure

each meal is a home cooked delight. It doesn’t get much purer than that.

In true supper club fashion, there is a fresh vegetable relish tray served before your meal, alongside fresh baked bread with butter.

The usual appetizers are available with cheese curds, of course, coming in at number one. Run an extra mile, do a few more

yoga poses, cycle a little harder in spin class - whatever you need to do to splurge on those heavenly curds.

If you’re fortunate enough to be there on a Saturday, you can’t go wrong with the prime rib. It is one of the best I have personally tasted, and the king cut is approximately the size of a car tire. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but it is literally as

big as my face, and seemed about two inches thick. There aren’t many places that you can find a healthy portion like that anymore.

All of the steaks are award-winning, and the fowl of the day ranges from chicken, to duck, to pheasant. There are also plenty of seafood options, ranging from lobster, to shrimp, to salmon, to the obligatory Friday fish fry.

The side choices include a

Out & About Wisconsin: What did you and your husband do before you owned the restaurant?Vicki Millis: My husband has always been in construction, and we also have a small farm just [north] of Milton. We raise pastured organic chickens, ring-necked pheasants, a lot of produce, and ferment a lot of things. When we saw this building was up for sale, because of all the farmers markets we were doing, we thought, “What a great place to have a hub - and a commercial kitchen.” But once we got inside, it was beyond - any normal person would have lit a match to it. The walls were covered in white mold … one side of the building was a foot and a half lower than the other side - everything was wrong about it. It was a lot of work. But we opened just about three years after the [previous owner closed it]. That was September 2013, so we’re just finishing our fifth year.

O&AW: It certainly seems to be going well.VM: Yeah, it has. What happened was, it seems a lot of the local people came out here a lot [before], so they got excited when they saw action happening. But then - one reason [the former owner] walked away was because he couldn’t afford to be charging what he was - so once they came in and saw the change in the menu and the change in the price structure, they just abandoned us. It was kind of a surprise, in a way. So it’s taken five years, and a lot of our customers come from the Milwaukee, Madison areas... Oconomowoc, Janesville, Rockford areas.

O&AW: It is a nice central location to those larger cities.VM: Right, and it still feels like you’re kind of out away from everything. But that also can be a problem, because it’s hard to give

directions on to get here. County K was the original [Highway] 26, that’s why it was so connected with the mob and everything, because it was a highway coming right out of the south. Then, what’s now Rita Lane was the second Highway 26. And now we have the third 26, the bypass.

O&AW: Where do your recipes come from?VM: A lot of the recipes we’ve had since the beginning, and some of them were just family recipes that were kind of tried and true, and we were comfortable with.

O&AW: So it truly is good home cooking. Does any of your family help out?VM: My son, [Marcus], is the head chef at night during service, and I do a lot of the prep work and gathering.

My dad is the host, and he gives tours. He’ll be 80 this year. This was kind of a healing thing for him, because my mom saw the building when we first purchased it, when it was a nightmare. But then she passed away, so this was his therapy. He came every day, he refinished the bar - there’s nothing wood in here that he hasn’t touched.

O&AW: That’s impressive - this woodwork is amazing.VM: [The bar] used to have copper on it, but it was badly damaged. Our intent was to just repair it and put it back on, but when we took it off we found this beautiful mahogany, and it’s one solid piece. And the cool thing is that it tells a story. You can see where maybe the dice got slammed, or maybe a glass got slammed or maybe a shot glass. There are cigarette burns - even the bartenders would leave them sitting on the ledge.

O&AW: Does your son who is head chef have formal culinary training?VM: My son was a student at Blackhawk Tech, in their culinary program. Chico Pope, who has the

Buckhorn [Supper Club in Milton], was one of his instructors. Marcus, when he was a teenager, worked for Chico at the Buckhorn, too.

O&AW: What are some of your more popular menu items?VM: Steaks and the prime rib are probably our most popular. We just got voted the best steaks in the area. We were second on prime rib, but maybe next year.

O&AW: What kind of dinner specials do you offer?VM: We usually do fowl of the day, and normally the weekends are duck or pheasant, which are both really popular. One of our servers here, her dad is Bill MacFarlane, who has MacFarlane Pheasant Farm, which sells all over the world now. But my husband’s family also had a pheasant farm, and the two families actually knew each other quite well. My mother-in-law was the first female to have a hunting preserve in the United States. After her husband passed away, she kept up with the pheasants and added the hunting. So my husband was raised on a pheasant farm.

Three cool features: 1. Secret trap door from the mob days 2. Pleasantly slanted porch3. Food sourced from local family farms

O&AW: Everyone has a different definition of a supper club. To you, what makes Edgewater a supper club?VM: We’re only open for dinner - or supper. We offer a relish tray at the beginning of your meal. We have a haunting, or spirits, that are here. There was a fire at one time - you can see up in the attic where the wood is charred. We offer bigger portions than what you would have at a regular restaurant. Always some homestyle cooking. And we have our regulars - that’s the “club” part of it. Plus we’re family owned and run, and we have family that work here.

O&AW: How much of your family works here?VM: Besides myself and my husband, we have my father, my son, my grandson, my sister, my nephew, and my other son, occasionally. We have a lot of family working here. It’s kind of entertaining for other people - it makes them feel more normal because they can see the dynamics [between us]. It’s

kind of like a reality show [laughs]. Lots of stuff happening.

O&AW: Can you tell me a little about the building’s history?VM: It’s over 100 years old. This part of the building [the kitchen and bar areas] was brought down from down the road, by horses, and put on a foundation. The dining room was added, of course, and the porch area was put on in the 1940s. And the porch area was an actual porch, which is why it’s slanted. A lot of people think it’s dilapidated, but it was built that way. We figure the people must have been pretty short, because most of us are fine, but one of our taller servers always has to duck [on the porch].

Another interesting thing is that the door of what we use as a closet now, was an entrance for ladies back in the time when it wasn’t proper for women to be in a bar. On the sign on the roof, which is original, it used to say “Tables for Ladies.”

O&AW: That’s crazy. Are there any other interesting features?VM: When my dad was cleaning the fireplace - it was all black, you couldn’t see the stone - all of a sudden he came to this writing on there, and we thought “who would graffiti a beautiful fireplace?” We couldn’t figure out what it said, but before we were open, some of our friends from Chicago came up, and their son, who was a teenager, looked at it and said, “Oh, it says ‘HEARTH O’ CHEER.’” And that’s what it says! The historical society in Jefferson had an old postcard which shows the fireplace with a wreath, and you can see HEARTH O’ CHEER on it. It’s interesting because it sounds Irish, in a strong German community. The first thing I thought of was, after I brought my mom through here when it was still a disaster, she said, “You know, I always wanted to have an Irish pub.” And then all of a sudden, a few months later, we found HEARTH O’ CHEER.

Also, Travel Wisconsin has us listed as one of the top gangster-related establishments. When [the mob] would come in to collect the

loaded baked potato, which could honestly be a meal in itself. First of all, the potato itself is only slightly smaller than a football. It is split open and loaded with mushrooms, onions, smoked brisket (which can also be ordered as a meal) and I believe there was even some sort of cheese sauce. In any case, it’s as delightful as it sounds.

The desserts are, like everything else, homemade, and appear to change on a regular basis. They all sound incredible, but with the size

of the rest of my meal I was sadly unable to indulge. I know, I know - I sound like a quitter. But there’s always next time.

All of the staff members you interact with are a perfect combination of nice, friendly, professional, and efficient. It’s easy to tell that this is a family-run business, and many of the staff are, in fact, family. Everyone goes out of their way to make you feel right at home in this cozy little supper club.

The building itself has quite

money, the owner had a secret compartment in the wall hidden behind a coat rack, and there’s a money-drop there. So when [the mob] went and got the money out of the till, they had no idea there was more.

O&AW: Tell me more about the mob connection.VM: This was considered “up north,” and the owners at that time darkened everything so that it would be very private. There are two areas on either side of the fireplace that, when you’re here, you can’t see that anyone is back there. It was like a private place, nobody could see who was back there. There’s a soffit that goes around the whole outside, and when we were doing a thorough cleaning of it, we found a playing card that was half-burned, so we always thought, “I wonder if someone was cheating…”

O&AW: What are the buttons for on the wall near each table?VM: Those were buttons for people to call

the server. Not the owner prior to us, but the owner prior to him got so fed up with it that he just cut the wires off. There was a box by the bar where the table number would light up, but somebody kept messing with it.

O&AW: You mentioned that you feel the restaurant is haunted. Can you tell me more about that?VM: Well, we’re still discovering this, but we had a guest come in and, unbeknownst to us, she was a sensitive person to things like that. She came up to me after she was finished [with her meal] and she said, “I just have to tell you, you have the strongest presence here.” And she said, “She’s a female, and she’s attached to your father. Wherever your dad is, her presence is very strong, and when he left it was quiet.” And then she came a second time, and she said that the presence was strongest in this area here [the area between the bar and the dining room].

I think everybody that works here can tell you something that has happened that they can’t explain. One time I had run some errands, and one of my guys was here cleaning out the fryers. At that time, you could stand in the kitchen and see all the way to the fireplace. [When I arrived], he was outside and he said, “I couldn’t go back in until you got here.” He claims that he was cleaning the fryers and he just kind of glanced that way, and this image or something was at the fireplace, and it looked at him, and then backed into the booth. Freaked him out.

Our regulars - we’ve got these ladies that have been coming in since we opened - they always sit [at one of the bar tables]. They were just sitting here, and all of a sudden this lamp just fell on the floor. Nothing got broke or anything, but there was no reason for it to happen.

O&AW: Has the presence ever seemed bad?VM: Oh no, it’s a nice spirit.

an interesting history. It was moved (by horses) from down the road, added onto, used as a mob hangout, and, eventually, abandoned. You can read all of the details in the interview sidebar. The most important part, however, is that Vicki and Bill purchased the abandoned restaurant in 2012 and spent a full year getting it back into working condition.

Five years have passed since they reopened the Edgewater, and they don’t seem to regret it a

bit. They have a thriving business that serves local, award-winning food, a staff that is like (or is) family, a historic building with a fascinating past, and even a friendly ghost. What more could anyone ask for in a supper club?

If you haven’t already, don’t forget to join our Supper Club VIP group; you’ll be entered in our monthly drawing for a $50 gift card to an area supper club, and there will be more Supper Club fun to come! O&a
