BOXTED PARISH COUNCIL/ BOXTED VILLAGE HALL
With effect from the 1st August Boxted Parish Council took over running the Village Hall and will be taking over as Trus-tees of the Boxted Village Hall Charity. Nothing will be changing for hirers apart from some small changes to do with invoicing and paying. The Parish Council as Trustees of the Charity will ensure that all existing reserves built up by the Village Hall Charity are ring-fenced for use by the Village Hall and also that all opera-tional income from all hiring charges in the future is likewise ring-fenced solely for Village Hall use. Any other rumours circulating about increased charges, groups being evicted, etc. are exactly that - rumours.
If you have any queries please contact The Clerk to the Council Boxted Parish Council
Denise Humphris on 01206 329019 The parish council is utilising the services of the Community Halls In Partnership project (CHIP) http://www.hythecommunitycentre.org.uk/trustees-a-staff with some of the responsibilities for the administration of the hall. DOG FOULING
Unfortunately the incidence of dog waste left in public areas appears to be on the increase again around Boxted and Lang-ham. Langham Parish Council has ex-pressed particular concern about the state of Perry Lane. Dog owners are reminded that a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) against the anti-social behaviour of dog fouling in public areas has been in force across the Colchester Borough since 31st October 2016. Under the above PSPO, own-ers are required to clear up after their dogs in all public land, along with all loca-tions where the public has permission to access private land. Failure to do this will result in a fixed pen-alty charge of £100 or a fine in court of up to £1000. Apart from the legislative obligation to ‘pick up’, leaving it in situ has an impact on other people; the problems summed up in this poem submitted by a local frustrated dog walker. Poo bags are available from Langham Community shop. As well as using desig-nated dog waste bins, it is acceptable to dispose of wrapped dog waste in ordinary litter bins – or you could take it home!
Oh, poo! Thank you to the people who leave it on the path, So when we’re home the family have to give our feet a bath. Thank you to the people who hang it in a tree, With no thought for others, the environment or me. Thank you to the people who leave it on the Rec For the children or the footballers to slip and hit the deck. Where’s your consideration for the world outside of YOU? Enjoy an outing with your dog but don’t leave us your poo!
JOB OPPORTUNITY
BOXTED HISTORY GROUP
The first of the group’s summer visits was a guided tour of Colchester’s Roman cir-cus where chariot races were regularly staged. Traditionally the Romans built a circus at most of their important strong-holds but Colchester’s is the only one, so far, discovered in Britain. In contrast, July’s meeting back in the vil-lage hall was an illustrated talk by Roger Kennell on the history of Hadleigh (Suffolk) from 1900-2000.

YOUR PARISH CHURCH NEWS How fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful part of the country, surrounded by the wonders and variety of nature. For the last few weeks, we have been aware of harvest all around us – farm-ers and gardeners have been gathering in the crops from the fields, gardens and trees, and we have seen the abundance of God’s creation and provision. We have the opportunity to give thanks at our Harvest Festival on Sunday 17th September at 9.30 at St Mary’s Church Langham. It will be a family service and will include an ‘Open the Book’ presen-tation of a parable, which featured a while ago in a school assembly at St Peter’s School. It tells the story of a farmer who built increasingly large barns in which to store his harvest for his own use. Unfor-tunately he died before he could enjoy it. We are challenged to share the good things we have with those in need. The Harvest gifts that are brought to Church at the Harvest Festival will be given to Colchester Foodbank, so pack-ets and tins of food will be gratefully received. Then on Sunday 24th Septem-ber at 6pm there will be Harvest Even-song at St Peter’s in Boxted. Our monthly family Services alternate between Langham and Boxted and are on the third Sunday of the month; there is always teaching and craft for our chil-dren at the 9.30am Services. We report two lovely occasions that took place in June and July: the Wed-ding of Thomas Johnson and Amy Turner at St Mary’s Langham and the Baptism of Rhys Sidney Christopher Pearse at St Peter’s Boxted.
Celebrated 100 years of Essex W.I. with a Garden party /BBQ. Thanks to Victoria Brown for the anniversary cake and to Jill Graves for her hard work in hosting the super event on a lovely evening which resulted in a large turn out. The children assisted the ladies in creating a scarecrow (their interpreta-tion of Betty Potter, a significant wom-en from Boxted past) for entry into the Essex WI show. Boxted WI members also enjoyed a trip to the Summer Spectacular at the Westcliffe, Clacton.
There is still time to volunteer as a
marshal for the races.
If interested please contact: [email protected]
LANGHAM LADIES
Our launch party on 13th July was a great success with almost 60 ladies en-joying a fun evening with prosecco and delicious canapés. 51 people joined on the evening with several more having paid their subscrip-tions since. Our September meeting on the 14th, is a pop up fashion shop We shall be giving further details of fu-ture events and outings at the Septem-ber meeting and are currently planning an autumn supper at Langham Commu-nity Centre for Saturday 21st October We should like to thank all those ladies who have given us such positive feed-back and joined our group, which we hope will go from strength to strength, providing fun and friendship for many years to come. For more details contact Gill Brown on 01206 273286 or email [email protected]

Spotlight On…… LANGHAM CARPET BOWLS CLUB
Langham carpet bowls club has been in existence since 1989, when 43 villagers became members. Some of those original members are still playing today which hopefully says something about the appeal of the club and carpet bowls as an activity. Although the club has reduced in size; we now have 25 members, it has remained one of the few clubs in Essex to restrict membership to those who live in Langham or have strong connections to the village. Essex County Carpet Bowls Association loaned a carpet to allow the club to get started. The club were able to pur-chase their first carpet in December 1989, followed by a second in February 1991 and a third in November 1991. In 1993 the club became affiliated to Essex C.C.B.A. and joined the winter league in the 1994/5 season. In 2003 the club first played in the summer league. The club has had just four Chairpersons since its formation, 28 years ago. Although we have been very successful as a club in the Essex league and cup competitions, members enjoy the friendly social aspects of the club sessions on Tuesday afternoons and Friday evenings at the Community centre, as well as the bowling. Several members have represented Essex and/ or won County singles, pairs, triples or fours championships. In 2005 three members of the Bushe family won the English National Triples Championship and in 2009 a team of four from the club won the English Fours Championship. The club has won their winter league on 13 occasions and been overall County Champions 6 times. We have also won the Ferris Cup, an Essex knockout tournament on six occa-sions. The game can be played by virtually anybody. You can sit down between turns or whilst waiting for your next bowl. You can play against your children (as long as they are adults), you can even play with your grandchildren. If the bowls don’t always go where you intend them and you get a little frustrated you can always have a chat and enjoy a cup of tea! Don’t be put off because you might hit the middle block or bowl off the mat, we all do it and share the laugh! This is what happens every Tuesday afternoon and every 2nd and 4th Friday evening. Why don’t you come along and see how it’s done? You all know where the Community Centre is. If you want further information please phone David (271079) or ask anyone who plays.
