September 2017

Unaccustomed as I am to writing much these days, the prolonged hospital-isation of the President, David Bailey, necessitates that I fill this space and welcome you all to the 2017/18 Pennant Season.

The Club at Clearview have been busy getting things ready. Our CEO and President have been busy with sponsors, MBA, et al; our saints have been busy getting the Greens, Grounds and Clubhouse ready; and, the nasty elves have been busy shrinking your uniforms1 and tampering with the bias of your bowls2.

Mary Grantham may be able to help you with the first; we have arranged to start practise times and our Club Coaches are awaiting your calls to

rectify the second.

There is much to read is this newsletter and I suggest you watch the notice boards and the web-site for more information. This is going to be a great season and the Club has many things to entertain you. The Club needs your help to keep the programmes rolling so if you can join the army the volunteers, please do so.

May I wish you Good Bowling whilst I try to temp our President away from the most expensive building in the world. My personal thanks to Diana Harder for being my right-hand man and my Rottweiler, herding articles from all that contributed to this edition.

With the end of Winter/Social Bowls coming to an end, I think we are all looking forward to warmer weather, which means our Bowling Pennant Season is about to begin.

New members: Rita Slovenic and John Young we welcome you to our Club.

The Committee this year is consisting of some new faces and will prove an asset. David Bailey (Chairperson of Selectors) is absent at the moment due to health reasons but should be

back on board in the near future.

The new Selectors, have been chosen from nominees by the Bowls Committee. A list of these are on the notice board. The second selectors will be chosen by teams at the second practice match.

With the Practice Matches upon us I wish you all Good Bowling and good health and

ENJOY your bowls that’s the main thing.

Welcome members to the 2017/18 Pennant Season. There has been several changes to the Pennant competition for 2017/18.

Firstly the MBA (Metropolitan Bowling Association) controls all Pennants conditions in our area.

This season, the game break is limited to 20 minutes TOTAL. A notice of motion not to have a break at the MBA AGM was defeated, as a result, our Club will be looking at providing sandwiches at a coast of $6 per person for Saturday and Wednesday.

Ladies Thursday Pennant will have a 10 minute break after 11 ends with lunch to be taken after the

completion of the game.

Prior to the start of the Pennant season, our club will canvass opposing Clubs to see what their intentions are regarding this matter.

Members are advised that under the Club’s constitution, Section 2 (17), annual subscriptions are due and payable by September 1st. As announced at the Bowls Committee Discussion Day, only financial members will be eligible for selection.

On behalf of myself and the President, David Bailey, we wish you the best of luck for the up-coming Pennant season.

Ian Bailey

We have four re-accredited umpires this year Leon Harder, Diana Harder, Campbell Menzies & Jim Fawcett.

Becoming an umpire has changed. Now you need to be an accredited Marker & an accredited Measurer before you can be an accredited umpire.

Clubs can still appoint a competent person to measure or be the umpire if an accredited umpire is not available.

I have noticed during Winter bowls some people are voicing opinions on some aspects of bowls and interpretation of rules. Please ask an umpire for clarification of a rule before giving misleading information. Leon Harder

Persistence A lot of you may have heard the story about when the great orator Sir Winston Churchill was invited to address the students at Eaton College that upon arising he stated with force and conviction ‘never…..never ever….never ever give up’ and sat down.

You know some people never know when enough is enough. Take this man for instance…

He was the son of a bit of a no hoper. He was poorly educated, and his mother died when he was only nine years old.

At the age of 21, he worked in a grocery store doing odd jobs. A year later he opened his own store and promptly went broke.

When he was 23 he stood for a seat in parliament and was soundly defeated. At 25, he tried again to go into his own business and went broke again. A year later, his fiancé died. He then suffered a nervous breakdown. After that, he studied part-time for six years to become a lawyer. During that time at the age of 29, he ran again for parliament and again he was defeated. He tried again when he was 34 and again when he was 37 and was defeated both times.

He married and had four sons, three of whom died. At the age of 39, he tried again for parliament and was again defeated. He tried again when he was 46 and was beaten again. And again when he was 49 and was beaten yet again.

Perhaps he should have listened to what everyone was telling him:

“Enough is enough”

But he didn’t. He kept trying.

Finally, at the age of 52, Abraham Lincoln became the President of the United States of America and went down in history as one of the greats.

The key point is: The number of times we actually succeed is based on the number of times we try. Remember this when you are have a bad day on the Practise Green.

Fowl Humour The Club’s two pool tables are also used during Night Owls...

Two owls are playing in the final of the Owl Pool Championship. It comes down to the last frame. One of the owls is just about to play his shot, when his wing accidentally touches a ball.

“That’s two hits” says the other owl.

“Two hits to who?” says the first.

As I’m writing this, the Off-season Social Bowls is winding down. This year our format was Triples o n b o t h S a t u r d a y a n d Wednesdays and worked quite well.

THANK YOU to all who helped in any way during the Off-season. I think we only cancelled three days due to bad weather.

To all players from both our club and visiting clubs, I trust you all enjoyed your days on the Clearview greens and hope 2017-18 is your year to both shine and enjoy the challenge of Lawn Pennant Bowls.

On behalf of Bev, Mary this is Renzo signing off.

I decided to become a coach this year with the view to learn the ropes under David Bailey. We started together but his illness has sideline David for the time being. At the moment, on Thursdays, we have two schools, seven students from Prescott College in morning and 28 students from Roma Mitchell in the afternoon. This presents a challenge. A. big THANK YOU to our Club members who have given their time to help me. I have been pleased to have been asked for individual coaching. The invitation is there for any Club member who wants to fine tune their skills. I must admit I can see the value of coaching which I did not recognize before.

Page 10

Continuing wet weather has delayed some work on the greens, although being cold and damp has meant that both A & B greens have been great to play on. We have managed to groom both greens which only leaves refreshing the black lines to complete. Consistent spraying of the weeds on A & B greens has kept them in check.

Thank you to the members who have made sure their shoes have flat soles.

Our greens and surrounds are a credit to my helpers Neville Owen for the greens, hedges, lawns and the new area by C green. Diana Harder for helping out when required. Bev & John Cushion for the colourful garden and pots and

Anne Fritsch & Ian Hart for tending the roses.

The problem of “Dumping” when delivering your bowl, particularly at Clubs using a surface with an underlay or any synthetic surface will be closely watched. Their greenkeepers and team managers will be warning bowlers who they consider to drop or dump their bowl. If you are warned seek advice and help from our Club.

We encouraged our members to have extra practice, but if it is (or has

rained) and the greens surface is wet, refrain from bowling or your complaints about straighteners and irregularities well not be met with any sympathy.

Please use our Club Sponsors as they are very important to our Club. Make sure you mention that you are a

member of the Clearview Bowling Club when

contacting them.

The Bowls Committee have introduced a

Suggestion Box

for the Members to share their ideas on how to motivate our Club.

At this stage there has been no response.

Do we want teas after bowls. Do we want fun days.

Do we want to make C green into a Bocce court or where you race model cars.

All suggestion will be considered providing they are signed.

Grace Manie Grace was born in Beulah Park April 29th 1937 making her one of our Special Members joining our “OBE” (Over Blooming

Eighty) club. She started her schooling at Wellington Road Primary School and her high schooling at Norwood. (Hence her

avid following of her great Redlegs Football Club.) She did an apprenticeship in dressmaking and made dresses for David Jones, Judells and many more.

Grace met the love of her life in James (Jim) Manie in 1951, they were married in 1956 and have: two children, Leanne & Brenton; four grandchildren; and, two Great children.

In 1964, James and Grace bought their first hotel in Kaniva, in Victoria. This was followed by: a pub in Daylesford, Vic in 1974; the Blue Duck in Ararat, Vic in 1987; and, then they were asked to trade the Barmera Monash Club, SA out of the red. They achieved this in 12 months; retired, saying “No more hotels” but within six months they had bought the Desmond Deli in Pooraka SA. More hard work!! After two years in the deli they missed the hotels and decided to lease the Uraidla Hotel in the Adelaide Hills.

During their time at Ararat, they sponsored the local bowls club. Both Jim and Grace played their first game of bowls on a Sponsored Day and that started the juices flowing for bowls. Years later they found time to play bowls for Uraidla BC.

When they announced they were selling the Uraidla Hotel, one of their customers, Malcolm Moar, recommended a good bowling club at Abattoirs. Consequently, they played for the Abattoirs BC until it was sold. Then as a club they came to Clearview in 1998, with the two clubs combined there were 280 members.

Since coming to Clearview, Grace has been heavily involved in our club in many ways. She has spent many hours in the kitchen drawing on her hotel trade talents which she passed-on.

She has been a Ladies Selector on Thursdays; Ladies Chairperson for Selectors for four years; and, a selector and player when the Ladies competed in Saturday Triples (that was a good year as Clearview won the Pennant).

Grace has played in many Club Championship Finals with success, winning ladies pairs four times, ladies Handicap Singles and has enjoyed playing Mixed Pairs with David Goodenough, winning three times.

Grace has enjoyed her time at Clearview and has made great friendships. As a club we wish Grace many more years playing with the Clearview Bowling Club. Diana Harder
