On September 11 we begin our fall minis-
try schedule. It is a combination of Rally
Day and Heritage Sunday. This is an im-
portant day in the life of our church for
several reasons:
We dedicate the year to God and ac-
knowledge our dependence on him
We celebrate our heritage with spe-
cial music and ceremony in worship
We rally our Sunday School Classes
and kick off our Christian Education
Ministry
We join together for food and West-
field Fellowship.
This year we are also going to honor the
Fife Sunday School Class as they cele-
brate their 70th year. The Fife Class was
started in 1946 by Reverend John
McMillan Fife. As far as we know it is the
longest running Sunday School Class in
Westfield’s history or at the very least
the longest running of our current Sunday
classes. Imagine the dedication and desire
for learning and fellowship that it takes to
carry on as a group for 70 years!
Current class members, pictured here

Randolph, Hazel Pence, Russ & Judy
Bryan; bottom row: Andy Williams,
Libby McCullough, Hazel Harriger, Ha-
zel Hassig, Harry & Pearl Jolley, and
Ann and Don Fox. Congratulations to
the Fife Class!
Psalm 145:4 says, “One generation shall
praise your works to another.” Join us
on September 11 as we come together -
young, old and in between - to praise the
Lord and celebrate his works.
Hosts Needed
Coffee and Conversation, offered before and after
Sunday School and Worship, returns on September
11. This casual gathering gives us a time to chit-chat
with friends while enjoying a cup of MoCo House cof-
fee and a few other offerings. It’s a wonderful way to
start off Sunday mornings! Please consider being a
host. Volunteers are needed. There is a sign-up sheet
in the Parlor.

We have an evening planned that is full of
games, food, prizes, and information on
the upcoming semester of YO! This is
happening on Sunday, September 11,
from 6-8 P.M. YO! kids and family mem-
bers are invited to bring an ethnic dish to
share for the potluck.
Throughout this fall we will have our an-
nual events like 5th Quarter Bonfires after
Mohawk football games, our annual Fall
D-Now retreat in
November, and
our fall party in
October. Stay
tuned for more
details on our
upcoming events!
I want to thank you for all the help, sup-
port and prayers you provided to the
youth and family ministries program
throughout this summer. It was truly a
great summer full of amazing events.
My hope is that we can continue this
great momentum of youth ministry into
the fall semester!

Giving Your All
Christ says, “Give me all. … No half-measures are any good. … Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked — the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.”

Join us for a hearty breakfast
followed by a continuing study of
the book of James. Contact Bob
Wigg or Chester Mace to find out
more.
In July we welcomed Kevin & Wendy
Mason who are on home leave from Hun-
gary through August, and are staying on
Wendy’s family farm. Their two older
children are establishing themselves in the
states with jobs and schooling. Kevin asks
for prayer to seek out high quality partner-
ships through which he will see many
come to Christ in Asia.
Mission & Outreach is holding an appre-
ciation picnic on September 8 for all our
hardworking township workers and first
responders.
Juanita Rug, pictured here, has returned
from her mission trip to Belgium and is
grateful for the prayer and financial sup-
port you provided. She comments, “This
whole journey has been an adventure as
well as a huge blessing.” She worked
with children of missionaries at the Zav
Center in Brussels, as well as a hospital-
ity group (washing dishes for every-
one!), and a church team. Juanita is
now considering an offer to work in an
orphanage in Peru from September -
November. Since she lived in an orphan-
age for the first 8 years of her life, she
has a special interest in this work.
A Great Way You Can Help a Hurting Friend
The CORNERSTONE September 2016
Women’s Bible Study
Marcia Votaw invites the women of the church
to join her for a study of Genesis. The group
meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the
month at 7:30 P.M. All women are welcome as
we resume on Tuesday, September 6. Invite a
friend!
Shoes and Socks for Students Thank you so much for your over-whelming generosity with the shoe & sock project! Thanks to you, we were able to supply over 60 students with new shoes and socks for the upcom-ing school year! They were all so excited to have something special just for them! Your kindness towards our students is greatly appreciated by the Mohawk Area School District and me. Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
God Bless, Phyllis McCullough
Mission & Outreach Update by Deborah Replogle
Do you have a friend, neighbor, coworker,
or relative who has suffered a loss or is
going through a difficult time? Here’s a
great way you can help them—tell them
about our Stephen Ministry! Stephen Min-
isters are members of Westfield Church
who have received special training to pro-
vide high-quality, confidential, one-to-
one, Christian care to hurting people.
Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their
care receivers to listen, care, encourage,
and provide emotional and spiritual sup-
port. (Males are matched with males, and
females are matched with females.) The
caring relationship lasts for as long as the
person needs care. It’s free, and it’s a
powerful way you can help a hurting
friend.
To learn how to connect someone you
know with a Stephen Minister, talk with
one of our Stephen Ministry Leaders -
Lorraine Book, Linda McBride or Evan
Ernst.

The CORNERSTONE September 2016
At the mention of miracles, we often pic-
ture the biblical kind: a dead person
brought back to life, a small amount of
food feeding a crowd, sight restored to a
blind man. Yet even today we look for
unexpected healings or an earthquake
victim found alive after days amid rubble.
But consider someone born with poor
eyesight who, thanks to technology, can
work as a professional proofreader or cre-
ate intricate digital paintings. Consider
someone with a prosthetic leg who can
run and even win races. Consider some-
one who, thanks to a donated heart, kid-
ney or blood, continues to live. Consider
friends in the United States and Europe
who can connect in “real time,” offering
support during a crisis.
Technology — whose source is the hu-
man brain created by God — makes pos-
sible a new, modern-day type of miracle.
When used for good,
it can overcome barri-
ers, allowing us to
celebrate life and
serve one another.
Miracles, indeed!
Modern Miracles
Food and Fellowship at Community Meal
September’s Community Meal is set for Wednesday, September 28, from 5-7 P.M. To volunteer, please contact Lorraine Book or any Deacon to find out more about our greeting, cooking, serving, set-up and clean-up teams. If you’re not volunteering, why not invite a friend or neighbor to join you for an evening of fellowship and great food?
Wanted: VBS Directors for 2017
We know you have a heart for Christ-
centered ministry to children and an atti-
tude of servant leadership. That’s why
we want you to volunteer to be one of
our 2017 VBS directors!
Our 2017 dates are tentatively set for
June 12-16. Won’t you take a moment
to prayerfully consider if God is calling
you to this vital ministry that our church
provides for our children and others in
the community? Please talk with Marcy
McClymonds or Linda McBride soon to
find out more about this exciting oppor-
tunity!
Women of Westfield Welcome You by Mary Mikesell
Join Women of Westfield (WOW) on
Tuesday, September 20, in Fellowship
Hall at 10:30 A.M. for Bible study and
fellowship. The study this year is “Who
is Jesus? What a Difference a Lens
Makes.” We will explore the Gospels,
Hebrews, Paul and other cultural inter-
pretations to “see” Jesus through these
different lenses. Won’t you join us?

After taking the summer off, our P3 Chil-
dren’s Ministry is getting ready for an
exciting year. We will be changing things
up a bit this year by adding more games
and activities and fun for all ages: pre-K
through 6th grade. Our evenings will still
consist of Praise, Bible Point and Prayer,
but we will be singing more contemporary
songs, meeting in different areas of the
church and exploring many ways to talk
to God in prayer.
We hope to engage in several activities
outside of the church building with possi-
ble field trips and perhaps interact with
YO! occasionally. This fall we will begin
our lessons on “ the Armor of God.”
Tell your elementary children, tell your
friends… Come out for fun, fellowship
and learning about God. Our first evening
is September 18, from 6:00 - 7:30 P.M.

The Christian church has long been sym-
bolized by a ship. While the Old Testa-
ment tells of Noah’s ark preserving right-
eous people during the flood, the New
Christian Symbols: Ship Testament recounts Jesus calming the
storm that battered the disciples’ fish-
ing boat. St. Ambrose described the
church as a ship with the cross as its
mast, and others have compared salva-
tion to being drawn out of the sea of
death into the safety of the church
(ship). Indeed, many large churches are
constructed to represent a big boat, with
the main worship space called the nave
— Latin for ship.
