DEAR FRIENDS OF BRYN MAWR HOSPITAL,

Bones can break. Appendixes can rupture. And hernias happen. When we

face any of these conditions—or the wide range of other circumstances

that require surgery—our daily lives may be interrupted and our goal is to

repair, restore and resume participation in the activities we enjoy as quickly

as possible.

That means getting the right care the first time, and that is an experience

that many of us have had at Bryn Mawr Hospital. For 123 years, the

physicians and care teams at Bryn Mawr Hospital have been providing

skillful and compassionate care to repair and restore the health of the

people in this community so that we can lead productive and fulfilling lives.

As you will read in detail in this newsletter, Main Line Health is making

a major investment in the Surgical Department at Bryn Mawr Hospital

by building completely new state-of-the art facilities in the new Patient

Pavilion. The new facilities will improve the experience for surgery patients

and their families, and will allow the superb Surgical Department staff to

do their work in an optimal setting. The right care in the best place—for

every generation and for generations to come.

Thank you for your interest in our work.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

New Surgical Suite

S ince its humble beginnings, the Hospital has grown a legacy of surgical excellence

across a wide variety of disciplines including general surgery, orthopedics, spine, otolaryngology, urology and surgical oncology (breast, lung, urology and more).

Our well-established program, that has for years attracted surgeons and surgical support staff at the top of their fields, is now being enhanced through the creation of an all-new surgical suite—a vital component of BMH’s campus modernization project.

With enough operating rooms to run the length of a football field, these new surgical facilities will meet contemporary standards for a high-tech, high-touch care environment with family-focused healthcare front of mind.

Why Build New?By building an entirely new Surgical Suite, we are not restricted by the confines of the existing space. Retrofitting our current Surgical Department would not enable us to achieve the size and number of operating rooms, recovery spaces and ancillary areas, all of

which are needed to support the latest technology and our growing surgical program. The creation of an entirely new space also allows for our busy surgery schedules to continue without interruption during the construction phase.

The new facility also allows us to unite our currently separate inpatient and outpatient surgical departments into a single Suite, creating operational flexibilities and efficiencies as well as improving communication and coordination among our surgical teams.

Lastly, this new construction gives us the opportunity to relocate the Surgery Suites to a more accessible location with greater ease of use. Patients will have a single destination for surgery registration, pre-op, procedure and recovery, just a few steps from the Hospital’s main entrance. Families can wait for their loved ones in a more convenient and open area with easy access to a café and the gift shop. The ground floor location means we can ensure a private post-surgery patient exit, separate from the public and directly connected to our Warden Lobby valet services.

The first patient through the doors of Bryn Mawr Hospital

in 1893 was a 64-year-old merchant from Lebanon, PA

who underwent cataract surgery and, according to the

Hospital ledger, was discharged two weeks later, “cured.”

Continuing the Bryn Mawr Hospital Legacy of Surgical Excellence

“ For many years we have invested in our human resources—attracting

and retaining highly-skilled surgical professionals. Now we are taking this

opportunity to make a significant investment in our physical resources to

equip our staff with the best facilities and tools to do their jobs.”

—TONI ACELLO, MSN, RN, DIRECTOR OF PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES, BMH

“ 25 years ago, when our current surgical facilities were

brand new, laparoscopic and robotic surgery was in its

infancy and not the norm. We have designed our new

operating rooms to meet the vastly different technology

demands of today with the flexibility to accommodate

surgical trends 25 years from now.”

—DAVID ROSE, MD, CHIEF OF SURGERY, BMH

SURGICAL SUITE FEATURES • Surgery reception, registration, and

family waiting area located in the new Pavilion Atrium, directly accessible from the Hospital’s main entrance/ Warden Lobby

• 12 operating rooms with an additional shelled OR for future development

• Pre/post-operative unit featuring 17 private patient rooms with space to comfortably accommodate family members at the patient’s bedside

• Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) with 20 recovery bays, a private room for patients requiring isolation, and two specialized rooms for pediatric patient recovery

• Consultation rooms for family meetings

• Staff support and work areas (additional surgical support services— including a large meeting space for staff education purposes—occupy the entire basement level of the Pavilion)

• Careful consideration of design so that natural light is maximized in all possible areas including patient transport routes and recovery areas

• A real-time monitor that protects patient identity will give family members the ability to track their loved one’s phase of care along the continuum of perioperative services—from pre-op, through surgery, to recovery post-op and hospital room assignment

ADVANCED OPERATING ROOMS • Equipment previously brought

into the OR on rolling carts will be suspended from the ceiling, leaving more open space for surgical teams, reducing clutter, improving safety and infection control, and enhancing functionality.

• State-of-the-art monitors will provide surgical teams with superior views of the surgical field, as well as pre-operative imaging and scans.

• All rooms are multi-use and can support the full spectrum of surgical procedures.

• In-room cameras can transmit a live video feed of procedures for educational purposes. In addition, this direct observation capability enables the surgical control desk to follow the procedure’s progress without having to disrupt staff by calling into the operating room for status updates.

“ For many years we have invested in our human resources—attracting

and retaining highly-skilled surgical professionals. Now we are taking this

opportunity to make a significant investment in our physical resources to

equip our staff with the best facilities and tools to do their jobs.”

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) WORKING CONCEPT

“ Last year on a holiday weekend I suffered a serious injury and was

taken to Bryn Mawr Hospital’s emergency department. I was quickly

able to undergo surgery and transition towards recovery the following

day and I felt fortunate to be in the hands of such a capable surgeon

and attentive nurses. My experience reminds my family how important

it is to have first-class surgical care and convenient follow-up at our

outstanding community hospital, so close to home.”

F or nearly 25 years, Barrie has

been generously contributing

to Bryn Mawr Hospital, inspired

by the great care that she and others

have received. Her son, David, and

his wife, Anne, share her appreciation

for the role the Hospital plays in

the community.

“We have three young children,

professional and volunteer

commitments, and lots of demands

on our time, like most families in this

area,” David shares. Anne concurs and

adds, “With three young, active kids,

it’s a huge relief to know we have

excellent health care right nearby.”

As these two generations of the

Ford family learned more about the

campus modernization project at

Bryn Mawr Hospital, they considered

the impact the new facilities will have

for everyone in the community. And,

just as Barrie’s father worked to give people their health back, the Fords

showed their deep commitment to

giving back to others.

Both Barrie Ford and her children—

including her son Jamie and his

wife Lauren—have made generous

commitments to For Every Generation: The Campaign for Bryn Mawr Hospital. Barrie’s support will be associated

with the Family Lounge on an

inpatient floor in the new pavilion.

Her sons responded to the Major Gifts

Match, which provided them with

the opportunity to dedicate a new

patient room. These gifts have helped

to advance campaign progress

significantly and reflect the multi-

generational appeal of the campus

modernization project.

“Some of the best physicians in the

field are at Bryn Mawr Hospital,”

Barrie concludes. “But what impresses

us most is more than their skill—it’s

the compassion that they give to

patients and their families. It’s

wonderful to be able to help provide

superior facilities for these incredibly

dedicated care teams.”

FROM EVERY GENERATION“I know a bit about surgery,” says Barrie Ford. “My father was a

surgeon and I grew up around conversations about giving people

their health back. I’ve undergone surgery myself (more than once!)

and I have a great appreciation for the skill it takes to operate.”

To encourage individuals to consider a leadership or major

gift to For Every Generation, a private family foundation with strong ties to the Hospital has generously established a matching fund for new commitments of $50,000, $100,000 and $250,000. These new gifts and pledges will be matched dollar-for-dollar, doubling the site-specific recognition value of the donor’s gift.

So far the Major Gifts Match has helped inspire six individuals to make significant campaign commitments.

“We could not be more thrilled by the generosity of these friends of

the Hospital,” says Michael Criscuolo, Executive Director of the BMH Foundation. “Each of these donors has had their own experience with care at Bryn Mawr Hospital. The Major Gifts Match provided the incentive for them to make their campaign commitment now, and have their gift associated with one of our premier spaces in the new Patient Pavilion.”

With these commitments, just two new Operating Rooms remain available, each in recognition of a new gift or pledge of $250,000. There are also seven caregiver stations available for donors who

contribute $100,000; and twenty patient rooms left for new gifts of $50,000.

Please call Michael at 484.337.8187 for details about the Major Gifts Match. The match funds will be allocated in the order in which new commitments are received and until the reserve has been exhausted.
