National Presidents Report
Presidents Report Hi TBirders
I attended the CMC Auto Show at Sydney Motorsport Park (Eastern
Creek as most of us know it) on Sunday 16th
August and it is a fantastic
event with over a 1000 cars. The day was great, with sunshine and blue
sky, so overall it was really nice day. I again got to take my
Thunderbird 1994 LX to the CMC event using a permit to move from
the NSW RTA or RMS or is that Service NSW? I had arranged a new
insurance policy with NRMA Classic ($8000 sum assured ). I got a new
battery this time and from Thursday to Saturday I started the car, just so
I knew it would start. On Saturday afternoon I checked tyre pressures,
oils, and radiator coolant etc. I had everything ready!
After all this preparation I GOT TO DRIVE THERE on the Sunday!! I
would have liked to have raced at Sydney Motorsport Park (SMP) in the
Morgan Car Club Supersprint event on the Saturday, however this year
and the entry fee would have blown my budget. I was however able to
show my Thunderbird on Sunday with the rest of the NSW team at the
outdoor displays at the CMC. We had a great display of Thunderbirds
including mine) and I think a good time was had by all. Some of the the
Tbirds decided to do the parade lap of the circuit, seeing it was our 60th
year and that was great fun.
I actually didn’t spend enough time looking at the vendor’s displays in
the garages this time. Steve Springett and I wandered from garage to
garage looking at all sorts of motoring items. We looked at all the
different groups of cars that were on display. The CMC is such a great
event well organised so we are looking forward to next year! A big
thanks to Pat Farrell for his organisation.!
The National AGM
Our National AGM will be held in Wagga this year because this is the
venue for our National Concours. Personally I have been looking
forward to the concours and it is no secret that my personal preference
is for a yearly national event. I like them every year because of the great
9 September 2015
time we have displaying our Thunderbirds and raising the T.O.C.A.
profile as a car club. I also look forward to seeing all our Thunderbirds
and especially at multi state events which are the icing on the cake for
our club. Some of those Victorian cars are just too beautiful to describe.
Of course there is the sharing of a common love of the Thunderbird
Marque and the bonds of friendship. Hopefully we can get lots of
interstate thunderbirds to come over the border/s to be part of this event
Don’t forget that the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and elections will
be held on Sunday 27th
September this is an opportunity for our
members to raise any issues or general business they feel needs to be
discussed and to vote for next year’s national committee. So please
submit the item for discussion at Wagga Wagga and of course come
along and bring your Thunderbird with you.
You can also send me any issues that you would like raised and I will
take them to the AGM for discussion. So please feel free to send the
details to me at: ([email protected] )
I look forward to seeing you all

Treasurer’s Report
Report for August/September. G’day all,
Without much activity in my department as treasurer the next magazine
still seems to roll around very quickly. With next to no membership
renewals and a few new members the workload has gone down
considerably, of course we do have a lot of concours deposits coming
in.
The general TOCA account presently stands at $9,142.11 with
$4,041.00 being concours deposits. The term deposit currently stands at
$8,807.29
All bills are paid up to date.
One thing I would ask is that people sending money into the TOCA
account by bank transfer do put their name or some other way to
identify the sender of the money.
That’s all.
Barry Wright.
New Members.

Club Meeting
December 13th
End of year celebrations. Think about where we can
hold this day. We would like to keep costs down to both the members
and the club and make this another enjoyable day. So put on your
thinking caps and come up with some ideas/suggestions.
Victorian Report JULY 2015 Hello fellow members.
It’s wonderful to see so many new members participate in our events
and meetings along with the existing members. Your input is what can
make this club grow.
We are heading into the busy season as far as events and shows are
concerned with the onset of better weather and I am sure like me you
are looking forward to it.
Recently we had another successful Christmas in July with over 40
members in attendance. The weather was extremely kind to us on the
day as evidenced by the mini car show we had in the car park. It was
great to see so many of the members’ cars out in the winter sunshine.
We had a different venue this time and it proved to be a winner. Our
caterers did an outstanding job of supplying us with good food and big
thank you to everyone contributing to our desserts and the nibbles. A
big thankyou has to go to Lucinda. Her attention to detail with the hall
and table decorations was as always impeccable. I don’t know how she
does it. Thankyou also to all those who helped set up and clean up
afterwards. It’s great to see everyone pitch in and help.
15 September 2015
Our next event is shaping up to be yet another great event. The weather
is promising so our visit to John Egglstone’s should be all the more
enjoyable. We already have over 30 members commit to attending.
For September we have some big events to keep us busy. On the 13th
we have both the rescheduled All American Day at Flemington that was
washed out in April and the Beaumaris Concourse Show and Shine,
both exceptional events. Members need to make their own minds up as
to which event to attend.
And let’s not forget the biggy for this month our very own National
Titles 25 -28 at Wagga Wagga. I urge all of you who are considering
attending to bite the bullet, make the commitment and go. Michele and I
are as are a few other members.
At our last meeting, and I have to admit they are getting bigger each
month, thank you all who can make it your input is most valued, it was
decided that we, The Thunderbird Owners Club of Australia Victorian
Branch, stage a Supper Dance in the true 50’s style or our version of it.
The Supper Dance is open to family and friends of members to help
share the fun and enjoyment such a night should bring and we look
forward to your participation. We have titled it The Enchantment Under
the Sea Dance, just for funs sake, and if the name sounds familiar we
borrowed it from the future. For this Dance to be successful we need
you all to get behind it, tell you family and friends, make up a table and
come along for a fun night. Dress code is not nautical, you don’t have to
dress like fish or sea creatures, not unless you want to. Your best Fifties
gear would be great but not mandatory, neat casual at least. Let your
hair down and enjoy yourself, that’s all we ask just a fun night to share
with friends and have a few laughs.
For any further information on this or any matters you have give me or
Lucinda a call.
Cheers Tony.
Regards,
Tony Buchanan

19 September 2015
Hi my name is Tony
Buchanan and
currently I am the
State Director for
Victoria.
I am happily married
to Michele and
together we have two
adult siblings, our
daughter Casey and
our son Ryan, both of whom are married.
Casey and Chris have two children, our grandson Riley who is 6 and
our granddaughter Matilda, Tilly, who is 3. Ryan and Melis are
newlyweds without children. We also have our little Pug Sallie, who is
two and a half years old.
My love for Tbirds began in the early 70’s when a man who lived near
my parents had a least 5 or 6 Tbirds in his front yard. From memory
they were all Flair birds and the one I remember most was this black
Landau with red interior. That back seat left a lasting impression on this
young petrol head who must admit loved all things car. I used to dream
of one day owning a car like that, that was until I found out how much
they were.
As I’m sure it did with most of us life, work, kids, mortgage etc, etc got
in the way of buying a Tbird and was promptly put on the back burner.
Eventually we found ourselves without some of life’s hassles and had a
few spare cent’s to buy those little things in life we had gone without.
The GFC hit and my Super took a dive and I thought I can’t do any
worse than that is so I thought why not look into getting a Classic and if
I was to lose out financially on the purchase at least I would have had
fun doing so. Tbirds were too expensive here and those that were
affordable weren’t worth looking at so I started looking at importing
our own.
Eventually we found our first bird, a Red 66 Convertible no less. She
landed here in 2008 she is named Candy. She was everything I’d hoped
20 September 2015
and more. Cruising topless on a nice day is unbelievable. Candy was
our pride and joy, and still is.
We joined TOCA in Early 2009. After attending a couple of shows
where we had met and spoken to a few members and thought that they
weren’t the typical car club people that I had remembered from my
younger years, and that these seemed to be friendly people who shared a
love of Tbirds and Life itself.
We decided that we then needed a hard top to use on those days when
the weather is less favorable for topless cruising so we went looking for
a Mustang. We found Amber, our 66 Mustang Hard Top and purchased
her in February 2011. She came home and shared space with Candy.
Thinking I was a lucky bloke having two classics to enjoy, a fellow
member was considering selling his 56 Tbird and when Michele found
out about it she suggested we buy it. We both loved that car but it was
just beyond our reach at the time. Some time had passed and we were
unable to complete the transfer. Through another member who had a
good friend in the States we managed to secure our beloved 56, Miss
Tiffany. She is Michele’s baby that I get to drive.
Our latest acquisition is our 57 Chev Pick Up. We purchased this from a
fellow member after Michele had seen it and asked why didn’t I buy it
when I first looked at it
months earlier. Armed
with that invitation to
add yet another classic
to the collection I
contacted Ross made
the exchange and now
the Truck as she is
called lives with us.
Since joining TOCA we
have made some great
friends and met some
21 September 2015
amazing people. We actively try and participate in as many events as
possible and look forward to many many more. We look forward to the
weekends and find any excuse that we can to get the cars out. We often
take the long way home just to enjoy the experience on the occasions
we don’t have an event to go to. I am extremely fortunate in that I have
a wife who enjoys the experience almost as much as I do. She
especially likes buying and wearing the period dresses to go with the
cars.
Thanks for your time.

Are your 64 ,65 or 66
gauges reading low or
even worse don’t work ,
did you know they can be
easily removed from
your dash and can be
adjusted .
Start by removing the
front cover by removing
one small screw in the
underside of the gauge
housing, and then it just lifts off. Now you can see inside the housing
well. There are two screws at the base of the gauge. Use a magnetic tip
Phillips head screw driver to remove these, be careful as these are easy
to drop and lose in the gauge housing well.
The wires should be long enough to allow you to pull the gauge out
without disconnecting them. You can do the adjustments while the
gauges are still in the housing or you can completely remove it.
Top view of the gauge when removed showing the top adjustment hole.
Bottom view of gauge showing the second adjustment hole. This is the
hole you need to use to adjust your gauges if there are reading to low.
23 September 2015
This photo shows the adjustment gear inside the hole
Use a flat head screw driver to slowly turn this gear. Hold the gauge in
your hand making sure you don’t came in contact with the indicator
arm. When you turn the gear the indicator arm will move either forward
or backwards depending on which way you turn the screw driver.
24 September 2015
I adjusted mine forwards slightly because the indicator arm was not
visible in the gauge window when the car was turned off and always
indicated on the low side when running.
My temperature gauge did not work at all, but I only had a spare oil
gauge. The gauges all use the same mechanism behind the front name
plate and these name plates can also can be remove and changed.
You can see the tabs that hold the front name plate to the gauge
mechanism.
These can be bent up with a screw driver allowing the name plate to
come off and then bent back again with long nose pliers.
Here I removed the oil name plate from a damaged gauge
I swapped the name plate from an old oil gauge for a temperature name
plate and now I have a working temperature gauge to use.
25 September 2015
On this gauge I adjusted the bottom gear to set the indicator arm at
empty and between the dimples seen at the top of the name plate.
This bottom adjust hole can be reached while the gauge is still
connected and if you’re lucky enough the wires pull out easy allowing
the gauge to move forward.
My car had the dash removed at some stage as I found out while trying
to get the gauges out and the wires did not move and the gauge pulled
straight off the connectors with a closer to look I found tape wrapped
around each wire with identification notes written on them stopping the
wire from being extend out the hole. The wire had fallen back into the
dash; what a nightmare to get these back into place. Small hands, being
flexible and being patient is a must when working on Thunderbirds.
If your gauges are reading low have a go adjusting them.
Gauges all spilt up
26 September 2015
Inside the gauges you can see the two small gear ends that can be
adjusted through the hole. Note all internals are the same on each gauge
and rely on those small wires to make them work.
Your editor installing a new roof to his 64 bird another story for next
time.
