“AND JESUS SAID…” We have chosen a theme for the congregation and its

ministry for the next year, September 1, 2015 to September 1, 2016.

The theme is: And Jesus Said…”

The 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) tell us about the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. The 4 gospels also tell us of the struggle that Jesus had continually with the devil, the world and our sinful flesh. It tells the story of his miracles, the parables he told, the healings, and confrontations with religious leaders.

If you want to study the Life of Jesus and want to read about his birth look in the beginning of the gospels - for his death and resurrection, look in the end of each of the gospels. His ministry in Galilee and Judea is then shared with us in the middle chapters of the Gospels.

The Book of Acts and the remainder of the New Testament was written down by the disciples and apostles not only to tell us what Jesus did for you and me, but also it gives us helpful advice on how to exist in this world until the Lord chooses to take us into eternity.

We thought it fitting for us to consider during this year a theme that would enable each organization, board & committee to build and explore ways to share the life of Jesus with these words:

“And Jesus Said…”

Let me share a few verses of what Matthew’s Gospel says about:

I have shared with you some of what the Bible said about Jesus in the Book of Matthew. The other Gospels are filled with information about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He died and rose for you and me! This is our great Savior! Our prayer for this year is that you will take the time daily to feast on the Word of God. It is a matter of life and death!

Keep your love for the Lord strong so that you might be of greater assistance to others in and out side of the faith.

We are called to be HIS SERVANTS, IN HIS KINGDOM, THROUGH THE CHURCH.

Page 3: September 2015 A Publication of Peace Lutheran Church of ...peacelutheranmn.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/... · The 4 Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John) tell us about the birth,

With great pleasure we announce our Personnel Committee has selected Dr. John S. Moir as our Choir Director.

In addition to excellent references, Dr. Moir comes to us with a broad and exacting résumé containing a most impressive accounting of learn-ing, teaching, performing and conducting.

Dr. Moir earned his Bachelor’s in Music from the United States International University, San Die-go, CA; a Master’s from the prestigious Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY; another Mas-ter’s in Music Education from Silver Lake Col-lege, Manitowaoc, WI; and his Doctorate from Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA.

His musical experience in planning, performing and conducting is vast, covering all of the musical genres from the Popular, e.g., “What shall we do with a drunken sailor?”: Spirituals “Soon and very soon”; Musical Theater, Gilbert and Sulli-van’s “HMS Pinafore”; an entire liturgical reper-toire from the Medieval through Contemporary Chorales; Oratorios, “Messiah”; into the world of the Opera.

In addition he has engaged himself in numerous workshops and continuing-training seminars. Dr. Moir lives in Eden Prairie with his wife Sandra and their two children, Brendan and Diana.

We have noted the decreasing number of our Sen-ior and Bell Choir participants but rest assured in that Dr. Moir has taken responsibility of church choirs having as few as five members, each choir experiencing a decided growth under his tutelage.

It is Dr. Moir’s philosophy and methodology of not only leading, but teaching, understanding “…each singer as a potential soloist, encouraging their individual vocal development and innate musicianship.” It is his belief that a church’s mu-sic also serves as an outreach tool to the commu-nity.

As a related but invaluable tool, he brings with him expertise relating to vocal health and peda-gogy, learned under the well-known Dr. Clifton

Ware, then head of the Vocology Center, a joint venture in vocal health and education between the Univ. of Minnesota Medical School, Laryngology Department, and the University’s School of Music.

A personal note: It is a wonderful experience in any venture to be a part of a whole, accomplishing something we by ourselves cannot.

This is first and foremost true in singing and play-ing. After many enjoyable and rewarding years of singing in the choir, I regrettably had to retire, my voice and its breathing having been effected by two bouts with pneumonia, the loss of range and the development of an old man’s uncontrollable vibrato such as that exhibited by the late George Burns.

However, I encourage the many I have heard in congregational singing to take this opportunity to enjoy and not only enhance and give greater mean-ing to the congregation’s worship, but also one’s own.

Join! Give it a try, learning from an authority what yet-latent talents lie undiscovered or unrevealed.

-- Jerry Benson

A Little Parish Humor A new pastor was visiting in the homes of his pa-rishioners. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. Therefore, he took out a business card and wrote 'Revelation 3:20' on the back of it and stuck it in the door. When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message, 'Genesis 3:10 Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelation 3:20 be-gins 'Behold, I stand at the door and knock.' Gene-sis 3:10 reads, 'I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.'

September Music Ministry Minute

Welcome back, musicians! We are excited to start the new musi-cal season.

This has been a season of change for many of us. We wished Jason a fond farewell and many thanks for a job well done in May and began the search for our new choir/bell director soon after.

We welcome Dr. John Moir as our new addition to the Music Ministry team her at Peace.

Dr. John Moir has been involved with singing since High School, and started conducting Church Choirs while an undergraduate. With Master’s and Doctor-al degrees in voice and conducting, Dr. Moir has taught at the University of Minnesota - Duluth, Sy-racuse University, University of Northwestern, and currently is Professor of Voice and Music Ed. at Crown College.

He also teaches voice near Minnetonka High School, at his private studio.

John and his family are all singers. They just re-turned from the MacPhail Sonomento Choir’s award-winning tour of Germany, and the Interna-tional Brahms Festival/Competition. They jokingly have been referred to as the ‘von Moir Family Singers,’ but all of the Moirs started singing in Children’s choirs at their respective churches, and have never stopped since. Dr. Moir and his family are happy to join Peace’s Music Ministry, and he hopes that we can make music a more vibrant part of the congregation’s worship of God.

The fall schedule that will help us to achieve our spiritual calling is as follows:

Peace Praise Singers-Julia Fahey, Director: Wednesdays, 6:00pm beginning September 16th

Handbell Choir-John Moir, Director: Wednesdays, 7:00pm beginning September 9th

Peace Choir-John Moir, Director: Wednesdays, 7:30pm beginning September 9th

Children’s Chimes, Leah Galaudet, Director: 1st Wednesday of month, 5:30pm beginning,

October 7st

Alpha and Omega Strings/Woodwinds: As needed.

If anyone would like to have their child play in the Children’s Chimes this year , please let me know. Generally, we rehearse the first Wednes-day of every month at 5:30pm starting in October. The chimes will play the Ringing of the Bells at the 9:15am service on the Sunday following the rehearsal. Chimes are open to all young musi-cians interested in trying something unique.

If anyone has any other instrumental talent to be shared, please let me know, and I will find a place or group for you to join. Remember to watch fu-ture newsletters and check out the church website for specialty groups.

I am looking forward to a fresh new season!

Have a blessed fall!

The first Library Book Discussion Group will meet five times during the months of October through December on the second and fourth Sun-days of each month to share our thoughts and reac-tions to a scheduled section of the story (see be-low). And a bit of a wild ride it will be! Spies, con-niving partnerships, terrorism and its violence, cherished friendships and a different perspective on God's interaction in our lives...all included. I will be honest with you in saying that some may find the writing a bit difficult to get into during the first chapters. Set in the 1980's Cold War chaos amidst its fears and uncertainties, the Roman Cath-olic church hierarchy and a collection of world leaders of every ilk, the words and phrases may not be readily understood. I assure you it is "worth the work". Each reader will find sections preferred to skim over lightly while others are worthy of deep pondering and introspection. Even though the scenario in some ways is quite outdated, it is like-wise surprising to find it quite current - not neces-sarily a positive connection! "The characters were very intricately written and the relationships and/or encounters between them so real and full of meaning. There were powerful struggles with faith and doubt in terms of human to human relationships, individual to institution relationships and human to divine. Each character represented a diverse and interesting reaction to the inevitability of the end of the world that had me really questioning what I would do in their shoes. (How DO you plan for the end of the world!?)." [Kari's review in part, from good-news.com]

I am able to purchase paperback copies through Amazon for $10.75 + tax; they are available via e-books or public libraries. I suspect used book stores will also have copies to purchase.

Reading Schedule October 11th - chapters 1-4, pages 1-96 (Book I) / October 25th - chapters 5 - 7, pages 97-189 November 8 - chapters 8-10, pages 191-275 (Book II) / November 22 - chapters 11-12, 277-335 December 13th - chapters 13-14 and Epilogue (Book III), pages 337-392 Jacki Schulze, Resource Coordinator .

Book Two of the Vatican Trilogy

"What would happen, if the members of the Roman Curia discovered that the Pope was about to publicly state that he had received a private revelation that the world was about to end? Pope Gregory XVII claims to have received a private revelation of the end of the world - an apocalypse coming not in some distant future but at any moment. Is he a madman, as his cardinals suspect, a mystic, or a fanatic grasping for an unholy power?

Hello from Children of Peace: It’s hard to believe that summer of 2015 is almost over. It was a busy and exciting summer at the daycare center. The children participated in sprinkler day, bike day and, even a live pup-pet show! We are getting ready for back to school time in just a few short weeks. Thank You, to Diane Mills, for making Va-cation Bible School a success. Thank You to all of the volunteers who generously donated their time and talents. We appreciate you! It was so much fun to watch the children learn about Jesus in meaningful and interactive ways. Thank You to all of you that donated snack supplies and other supplies to the daycare. ing Fundraisers

Fundraising for the National Youth Gathering will be starting again in September.

Keep your eyes open for more information soon!

♦ WHAT IS THE NATIONAL YOUTH GATH-ERING? Held every 3 years since 1980, the LCMS Youth Gathering provides thousands of youth and adults the opportunity to come together as a community of God’s people to learn more about Jesus Christ, the Chris-tian faith, and their Lutheran identity. ♦ HOW DO WE PAY FOR IT? The funds for the youth and chaperones to attend are raised entirely through various fundraisers.

♦ WHEN IS IT? The upcoming National Youth Gathering “In Christ Alone” will take place July 16-20, 2016 in New Orleans.

♦ HOW CAN YOU HELP? You can help raise the funds for each person to attend by partici-pating in our fundraisers as well as praying for our youth and families as they raise the necessary funds and prepare for the NYG.

♦ WHO IS ATTENDING? Cynthia Odens, Haiden Spotts, Brynn Zimmerman, Izzy Ga-laudet, Kyle Johnson, Gabe Allen, and possi-bly more.
