Ball State journalism instructor John Strauss, a former Associated Press manager and veteran broadcaster,

has been named interim general manager for WIPB Public Television and Indiana Public Radio, filling the roles formerly held by Alice Van Dyke of WIPB Marcus Jackman of IPR.

Strauss is the host of IPR’s award-winning Indiana Weekend, and he produced and hosted WIPB’s FAITh, hoPe & CoMMunITy, an hourlong public forum on race in 2012.

“While Ball State prepares a national search for a manager of the newly unified public broadcasting operations, John will look for ways to grow our service to the community and collaboration with academic departments on campus,” said Dan Lutz, associate vice president for information technology at Ball State university.

“In particular, we’ve asked him to explore new immersive learning opportunities that could leverage our broadcast facilities to the benefit of both the students and our community partners,” said Lutz.

Strauss has a background that includes 10 years as an AP manager in Indianapolis, nashville and new york City, experience as a reporter and weekend anchor at nBC affiliate WnDu-TV in South Bend and several positions at The Indianapolis Star, where he covered government and politics, and most recently was a digital news editor.

Strauss earned his master of arts in telecommunications-digital storytelling from Ball State and has a business degree from the university of notre Dame. he and his wife, Martha, have two grown daughters.

WIPB honoring local education championsWneT new york Public Media has awarded WIPB Public Television a $10,000 grant to participate in the American Graduate “Stories of Champions” national production initiative.

This community engagement campaign, produced in conjunction with American Graduate Day on Sept. 27, will feature short television segments profiling champions in our community who are working to keep students on the path to graduation, and a special day of programming dedicated to education.

The local education champions WIPB will feature include: Jud Fisher, Ball Brothers Foundation president and chief operating officer and chairman of higher education for the State of Indiana; Mary Dollison, Motivate our Minds founder; state Rep. Sue errington of Muncie; Carrie Bale, Muncie B-5 executive director; and Dixie Denton, faculty advisor for College Mentors for Kids at Ball State.

In September, IPR’s Community Connections program will feature Teen Works, a local nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower teens to achieve excellence in college, career and community. Community Connections can be heard on IPR Thursdays at 11 a.m., Fridays at 5:45 p.m., and at noon on Saturdays.

Frontline “Ebola Outbreak”Tuesday, September 9, 10 p.m.From the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak, FRONTLINE follows health officials tracking the deadly disease and trying to stop its rampant spread. With special access to teams fighting Ebola in Sierra Leone, the film shows how the outbreak is endangering health- care workers, overwhelming hospitals and getting worse. FRONTLINE

also investigates accounts that members of the Nigerian military have been committing atrocities in the fight against Boko Haram, the Islamist

militants who kidnapped nearly 300 schoolgirls in April.

THE ROOSEVELTS: An Intimate HistorySunday, August 17, 9:30 p.m.Ken Burns’s seven-part documentary weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The 14-hour series marks the first time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative. THE ROOSEVELTS follows the family’s story, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president.

Ford Oval of Honor Saturday, September 13, 7:30 p.m.

In partnership with the Central Indiana Ford Dealers, WIPB Public Television is proud to present the FORD OVAL OF HONOR. Tune in for this special television tribute honoring four local veterans — SSG James Dolan, Army, WAR; SPC Christopher Gonzalez, Army, WAR; 1ST LT Johnathan Mann, Army WAR; and SGT Jessica Robinson, National Guard, Operation Iraqi Freedom — who answered the call to serve and defend our

country and went above and beyond their call of duty. The recipients will be awarded during a halftime presentation at

the Ball State home football game Sept. 13 at 3pm.

Robin Williams - A Pioneers of Television SpecialTuesday, September 9, 9 p.m.ROBIN WILLIAMS - A PIONEERS OF TELEVISION SPECIAL will feature one of Williams’ last full-length interviews for the series, including never-before-seen comments on his life and comedic and dramatic work, as well as tributes to Williams by those who knew and worked with him, along with clips from moments throughout his career.

Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., continues his journey into the past to illuminate the familial histories of 30 of today’s most recognizable names in sports, music, film, television, theatre and literature. The 10-part series explores the heritages and ancestries of 30 of today’s leading entertainers, athletes, chefs and media personalities, including: Ben Affleck, Jessica Alba, Khandi

Alexander, Tom Colicchio, Tina Fey, Sally Field, Derek Jeter, Stephen King, Nas, Anna Deavere Smith, Sting and Courtney Vance.

PBS Arts Fall FestivalFridays at 9 p.m. beginning September 26The PBS Arts Fall Festival returns in September with 11 weekly programs featuring classic Broadway hits, music from around the country and a theater performance. Hosted by award-winning actress and singer Kristin Chenoweth, the festival highlights PBS’ ongoing commitment to giving audiences a front row seat and a backstage pass to the best of the arts on-air and online. Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel star in LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in Concert with the New York Philharmonic” on Sept. 26.

MAKERS Season 2Tuesdays at 9 p.m. beginning September 30Six new doc umentaries in the MAKERS project feature groundbreaking American women in different spheres of influence: war, comedy, space, business, Hollywood and politics. Each program will profile prominent women and relate their struggles, triumphs and contributions as they reshaped and transformed the landscape of their chosen vocations. The first episode, “Women in Comedy,” features Contemporary comics, including Joan Rivers, Ellen DeGeneres, Jane Lynch and Kathy Griffin, among others.

American Graduate DaySaturday, September 27, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.

“American Graduate: Let’s Make It Happen” is a “call-to-action” event, featuring national community partners, and locally-produced segments profiling community partners in Central Indiana. The telethon includes a dynamic mix of long-form programming, live breaks and pre-taped segments. It will tell

the story of community partners and how they provide support, advice and intervention services to at-risk students, families

and schools. WIPB will broadcast a total of 7 hours of education programming, including the stories of local organizations.
