It is the same kind of change experienced by the disciples when Jesus asked those who were shermen to lay down their nets and followed him. As we remember the 10th anniversary of the twin hurricanes, let us remember that change is inevitable, and the most important change is our willingness to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. So much has been accomplished in these past 10 years at First Presbyterian Church. I wish, in the name of the church, to thank all of you who have done so very much to place us in such a positive position for ministry. When adversity struck, our congregation chose not to wither, but to stand strong, and move forward, as we have followed Christ into the future. Today we live in a culture that is as stormy as any hurricane. We will continue to experience change in our lives and in our ministry. As we reject sin and turn to Jesus Christ, let us continue to move forward, be willing to change, and to serve as God wills. Thank you for all that you do for the glory of God and the empowerment of the Ministry of First Presbyterian Church.

A Catalyst for Change

The church, like each one of us, is often driven to change by a catalyst agent. Individually, we might change our diet based on a recommendation from a doctor. We may buy a new car, because our previous car has mechanical failure. We may buy a new house, because our family has grown and the old home is inadequate.

In September 2004, First Presbyterian Church was forced to make new decisions as a result of the catalyst agents hurricane Frances and hurricane Jean. As a result of damage caused by both of these hurricanes, the ministry and facilities of First Presbyterian Church would forever be altered. Many of you remember where you were when these hurricanes struck. Many of you helped in the cleanup of First Presbyterian Church, and many of you gave us all assurances that everything would be okay.

We have come a long way in 10 years. Our congregation has indeed changed. We have new members, and former members have entered the church triumphant. Our facilities have changed. We have raised the footprint of our property where possible. And, it must be acknowledged, several of our buildings are still vulnerable to fl ooding.

Change is never easy. Sometimes, as with hurricanes, it is thrust upon us. Yet, at other times, we have to

make our own decision to change. The Christian faith is bound on the concept of change. When we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we make a covenant where we promise to reject sin and to follow the ways

of God. That is a radical change. It is the same kind of change experienced by the disciples when Jesus asked those who were fi shermen to lay down their nets and followed him.

As we remember the 10th anniversary of the twin hurricanes, let us remember that change is inevitable, and the most important change is our willingness to accept Jesus Christ as our Savior. So much has been accomplished in these past 10 years at First Presbyterian Church. I wish, in the name of the church, to thank all of you who have done

so very much to place us in such a positive position for ministry.

PREACHING SCHEDULE

Dear First Presbyterian Church Family,

I was so touched by your thoughtfulness when I received the large, beautiful blue ceramic planetarium with seven different plants and fl owers. You have fl ooded me with your emails, cards and especially prayers, making me feel so uplifted. I miss you but know I am safer here in Kentucky, in my retirement home of 915 square feet on a laminate fl oor which helps me get around easily in my wheelchair… the right choice, for sure. Both families are close by. I will keep in touch.

Love and blessings,Debbie Eggum

First Presbyterian Church Preschool – Fall 2015

The Preschool Task Force Committee has been working since November, 2013 to provide Session with a Preschool Feasibility Study. At the August meeting of Session, the Preschool Task Force made its fi nal report to Session, and Session approved “the establishment of a preschool at First Presbyterian Church”. The planned opening date for the First Presbyterian Church Preschool is September 2015.

The goals of the preschool are to support families and to extend the ministry of the church, by providing biblical based, age-appropriate education for preschool children. It is also an opportunity to be better stewards of the children’s wing in the Center for Christian Life building. The preschool will be self-suffi cient, and there will be no additional costs to the church’s annual budget. If suffi cient enrollment is not achieved by Spring 2015, the opening of the preschool will be postponed.

Session also approved that the Task Force Committee become the Board of Directors for the First Presbyterian Church Preschool. Letter of Appreciation

Dear First Presbyterian Church Men’s Club,

To all of Georges “brothers” at the Tuesday morning breakfast group, I am not often at loss for words, but it is hard for me to fi nd the right ones to express my feelings for all of the love and care given to me since George fi rst became ill.

He loved every one of you and expressed it to me frequently. When you gave him the 90th birthday party, he was touched beyond anything he ever was able to verbally communicate to you. The remnants of the party still adorn the fi le cabinet. Then when he became ill and entered the hospital, some of you were there, and when he entered hospice, many of you were there more than once.

What a beautiful expression of the brotherhood and love you all felt for him. I was touched beyond words by your presence and support. Since his death, the love and support has continued with daily offers of help. Even if I did not need something that day, it was such a comfort to know I had someone to turn to. Some of you are still fi lling needs and connecting me to people or help sources as things come up.

George was the happiest these last years doing what God called him to do at Vero First. As pastor of Congregational Care he did not have to worry about the budget, the business end of church, most meetings (except deacons, again pastoral care) or preaching every Sunday. He loved to teach and was always overjoyed when Tim asked him to fi ll in for him.

But his fi rst love was just LOVE of all of God’s children, especially the Tuesday morning group and the choir. So, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all your loving care.

Sending you my love in the name of Christ, the One who taught us all to love.

While searching for work in Gainesville, Jane volunteered in the church Vacation Bible School where she met a high school principal and father of children attending the summerprogram. She credits God with making this connection as the principal hired her the next day! Unfortunately after twenty years of marriage, Jane and Virgil had grown apart and divorced. Jane took a leave of absence and moved to be with Beth in Boone, NC. There she met and married Ray Graham, a math professor at Appalachian State University, sang in the Choral Society, volunteered as director of musicals in the local theater and gave private music lessons. Jane and Ray Graham divorced after a ten year marriage.

Jane moved to Atlanta, GA and lived near her brother who was a microbiologist with the CDC. While teaching in the schools there, she met and married Duane Weise, an engineer turned builder and developer, with the understanding that they would move to Florida to be near her children. They settled on Vero Beach in 2001 and as they searched for a church home with a good musical program, they found a perfect fi t with First Presbyterian Church. She and Duane loved Pastor Tim’s sermons and she made a special friend of Judith Taylor, the organist and Minister of Music. They felt warmly welcomed and Jane felt spiritual joy in giving and praising God with her talent. Jane has been active in the music ministry of the church and served a term as a deacon, class of 2007.

Jane is a member of the Vero Beach Chamber Orchestra and performs with them twice a year. She is also a member of the Space Coast Flute Orchestra and gives concerts in Melbourne, FL. Jane plays piano and accompanies the Deacons with their hymn singing at local nursing homes and gives musical performances with Janet Hempton at the IRE.

She is complimentary of our multi-talented music director, Jacob Craig who is such a “gift to our church with the soul-inspiring joy he gives to God.”

Spotlight on a Presbyterian Woman - Jane Weise

“Worship the Lord with gladness, come before him with joyful songs.” (Psalm 100:2) Musician, teacher, sportswoman, wife, mother, grandmother and devoted Christian—we are fortunate to count Jane Weiss as a

member of our church family

Many have witnessed the joy and praise-giving that fl autist Jane shares during worship services, but recently she had a more personal performance.

Jane visited Dr. George Earnshaw in Hospice where she played his favorite hymns as he prepared to enter the gates of heaven and then dedicated her music again for his memorial service. In her quiet competent way, she demonstrated her special love for him, his encouragement and warm smile and her abiding friendship with his wife, Jinny.

Jane and her identical twin sister, Beth, surprised her mother with their births in Bartow, FL and joined an older brother in this close knit family. Actively involved in the Baptist Church, they shared their talents for music at Sunday school by singing in the choir and by playing instruments, Beth on clarinet and Jane on fl ute and piano. Their mother sewed identical clothes for the twins as well as working as a public school teacher and a community leader. Childhood was a joyful time in their home!

In her senior year, Jane eloped with her high school sweetheart, Virgil and they moved from Avon Park to Sebring where Virgil’s father owned a business. With her parents’ help, Jane commuted from Sebring to Lakeland to attend Florida Southern on a music scholarship. She graduated with Honors in 4 ½ years while at the same time adding two children, Susan and Justin to their young family. After graduation, and with a degree in Music Education and English, they returned to their hometown and Jane taught in her own high school. Later Virgil and Jane moved to Gainesville where she taught music in a junior high school, earned a Masters and Specialists Degree in Music Education from the University of Florida. Their third child, Lisa, ws born in Gainesville.

Jacob replies, “Jane’s kindness, willingness, and excitement make her an invaluable member of the choir and musician of the church. She is always ready to host a choir party, always looking to play and improve repertoire both new and old, always full of enthusiasm for any piece of music, any rehearsal, and any performance. Her spirit is contagious, and without fail brings joy to myself and all around her.

And Jane is a golfer! She is a past President of the

Sandridge Golf Association. During her earlier years, she played in local, state, and national championships. In 1971 she played in the US Women’s Amateur Championship. She also enjoyed tennis and racquetball in her spare time before moving to Vero Beach..

” Another of Jane’s favorite Bible verses that sums up her spirituality is I Corinthians 12:13. “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love but the greatest of these is love.”

The Diaconate has returned from recess to plan for a busy beginning of the season. We have begun plans for Rally Day while talking about changes in the Angel Tree protocol as well as the Hope Baskets. The Juice and Cookie Fellowship is also a ministry we are re-evaluating. We are thinking about adding a co-chair to this ministry and increasing the budget for this ministry next year. Stephanie has done an excellent job of putting her “imprint” on this popular ministry. The Diaconate will also, with other committees, be planning for next year’s budget. Hope everyone--including the Deacons in vacation mode--are having a blessed summer.

The Trinity Trio - November 23, 2014 at 3PMThe Trinity Trio has been performing together for the past 5 years. The blending of the fl ute, viola and guitar allows a full range of harmonies that is not commonly heard in a chamber ensemble. Trinity Trio has performed throughout South Florida to standing ovations.
