Mr Q at The Club Hotel
There has been a bit of talk lately, both online and in real l ife, withsome claiming that our local music scene is dying. Is it? Really?Or is it not just working out for those making these statements?
Let’s take a look at the local scene as it presently stands.
Firstly, the clubs: the larger clubs in town such as The Waves,Brothers and the RSL have live music 4 nights a week, every week– and sometimes multiple acts on one or more of those nights. Allcan certainly claim to be supporting local musicians too, amongst agreat variety of visiting acts. The smaller clubs, such as CQLeagues Club, Easts, Burnett Bowls, Innes Park, Bargara Bowls,Bargara Golf (the availabi l ity of l ive music in Bargara is a topic foranother time) and more have live music on a regular basis as well ,usually 1 – 2 nights per week.
Then of course, there are the pubs. The town pubs – The ClubHotel, Sugarland Tavern, The Central, The Metro Hotel al l have agreat l ine up of soloists and bands every weekend, both local andvisitors al ike. The Grand is having a crack at getting music up andgoing again, The Queenslander has acts sporadical ly, TheMelbourne Hotel has kicked off l ive music every Friday and justtake a look at the Railway Hotel since it reopened – live musicevents every weekend, and averaging more than 1 0 every month.
Outside of the CBD and Bargara, there is no shortage of l ive musicoptions either. Bucca Hotel, The Lighthouse Hotel in Burnett Heads,Avondale Tavern, South Kolan Hotel, Gin Gin Hotel, Wallavi l leHotel, The Federal in Childers, Apple Tree Creek HotelHand theseare just the first names that spring to mind.
Add to these the other offerings from local restaurants and cafés,the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre and festivals such as TheLighthouse Festival, Childers Festival and many more and it seemswe have a pretty vibrant l ive music scene week in, week out.
For a region with a rough population of 70,000 people, looking atthe l ist of l ive music providers above makes me feel spoilt forchoice, rather than a perception of a “dying scene”. Per capita,Melbourne or Sydney would struggle to keep those sorts of ratiosgoing. Certainly Canberra (where I am original ly from) couldn’t holda candle to what is on offer in the Bundaberg region – and it ratesas one of the cultural epicentres of our great country.
So is our local music scene dying? From my observations, not inthe least. I f anything, it is going from strength to strength, andmaintaining its momentum nicely. For those that assert that ourscene is dyingHmaybe have a think before you yell that from thetreetops – you may be doing more harm than good in the long run.
Let’s keep it going! Get out and check out what’s on offer.
