Early Childhood Tooth Decay: Breast Feeding, Bottles and Sippy Cups Many children satisfy their desire to suck by continuing to use a bottle or sippy cup as a pacifier or by breastfeeding long after these habits are no longer needed for nutrition. If the bottle or the cup contains any-thing other than plain water, the frequent sucking or sipping may put the child at very high risk of developing early and extensive problems with their teeth. The more often sugars or other carbohydrates stay in the mouth, the more food they provide for cavi-ty-causing bacteria and the more likely it is the child will develop early childhood decay (also called childhood caries). This early decay is particularly worrisome because it spreads rapidly and often causes pain and infec-tion.

Early Caries are a Bigger Problem than You Might Think The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 28% of children 2 to 5 years old have tooth decay. Some of these children have the severest form of early childhood caries which can cause pain that interferes with eating, sleeping and normal play. Also, some of these children will require such ex-tensive care that they will need to have their teeth worked on while under general anesthesia. This carries its own risks and can cost into the thousands of dollars. How can you spot early decay in your toddler? Look for spots on the teeth that do not come clean with normal brushing. Children’s teeth are very soft and the decay can progress rapidly. You should seek the advice of a dentist as soon as you notice these discolorations. The best way to learn about your child’s risk of early childhood caries is to start dental care early. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests that a child’s first visit should be scheduled around the time the child’s first tooth emerges and no later than the child’s first birthday. Preventing Decay Decay can almost always be prevented by keeping your child’s mouth in a state of good health. This requires healthy eating, good oral hygiene, and regular professional attention. Here are several things parents can do to prevent cavities in their children: Don’t let your infant walk around with a bottle or sippy cup that contains anything other than plain water. If your infant uses a bottle to soothe herself to sleep, fill it with water instead of milk, or substitute a

pacifier. Whether you’re breastfeeding or using a bottle, wipe your child’s gums and teeth with a damp washcloth

or gauze pad at least twice a day.

Tooth Decay is Catching It’s hard to believe, but bacteria that lead to early childhood caries are typically passed from mothers to children! This can happen in several ways. Do you taste your child’s food with a spoon that you then use to feed your child? Do you allow your child to suck on his finger after putting in your mouth? Do you lick a pacifier that fell on the floor before giving it to your child? Sometimes we don’t even think twice before doing something like this. But you could be putting your child at risk for early decay.

The TLC St. George office is looking for a full time receptionist. Hours are 9:00 - 5:30 Monday through Thursday and 8:00 - 4:30 Friday. (Hours include a 30 minute unpaid lunch break.) Duties include: Answering phones, directing calls and fielding inquiries Setting appointments Miscellaneous translating Data entry Preparing mailings and distributing Mail Ordering office supplies Scheduling facility usage of meeting rooms Compensation: This position starts at $20,800 annually and includes a very generous benefit package

This certainly has been a wonderful year for sweet, juicy watermelon! It seems to me that each month the watermelons just got yummier and yummier. What better way to celebrate the last of the crop than this tangy salad? 6 cups of diced watermelon Juice of one lime 1/3 cup of feta cheese 1 small Serrano chili, deveined with seeds removed,

finely chopped Chopped fresh basil Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. If your family is not a fan of spice, leave out the chili. If feta cheese is too exotic for you, you can substitute shredded Swiss or Jack.
