From the Exalted Ruler:
The long hot summer is almost behind us. There is a lot happening at the Lodge and it’s good to
see our members slowly returning. The football package has been purchased and surely everyone
is awaiting the first game. This past month we lost two of our life members, Robert Amos Hawkins
and Thomas Alva Hawkins. Both these men have been very helpful in the growth of our Lodge and
will be truly missed. On Saturday Sept. 14th the Lodge will hold our 1st annual Soccer-Shoot. It is
being held at the Copper Basin Elementary School, just off Hunt Hwy. & Copper Mine Road.
Hopefully this will be a huge event for the Lodge and we can use all the volunteer help we can get.
Then on Saturday the 21st we will be holding our Fund Raiser for the Granite Mountain Hot Shots.
We will have a steak cookout dinner, music, presentation of outstanding service award to a
Coolidge and Florence Firefighter, raffle and silent auction. It will be open to the public, so please
contact all your friends and please come, it’s for a good cause. Note to all members, if you have
anything you would like to see your Lodge do, please let one of your Lodge Officers know.
I remain Fraternally Yours, Ron Metzler

From the Leading Knight:
The recognition of the Eleventh Hour dates back to the Battle of Hastings in October of 1066 when William of
Normandy established a curfew demanding that all watch fires be extinguished at eleven each night. The Royal
Order of Buffaloes, of whom Charles Vivian, an original Elk, was a member, practiced an eleven o’clock toast in
remembrance of this battle. Charles Vivian brought this tradition here. George F. McDonald delivered the first
official eleven o’clock toast at a social session May 31, 1868, while Charles Vivian was out of town. By mid June,
Charles Vivian no longer darkened the Elks door evermore. In earlier days, the social sessions were usually held on
Sunday nights and were concluded about eleven o’clock. As the participants departed, members naturally made
inquiries about the absentees and expressed sympathetic interest in their causes.
While Jolly Corks meetings were held with regularity, apparently no form nor substance resulted, except for the
adoption of a toast to members of the group not in attendance. This was the genesis of the eleven o’clock toast.
Please find below the Jolly Corks toast. I have been an Elk for 40 years and have only met one Elk who gave this
toast to a group of Elks at eleven o’clock. I wish I knew more…
The Original Jolly Corks Toast
Now is the hour when Elkdom’s tower
Is darkened by the shroud of night,
And father time on his silver chime
Tolls off each moment’s flight.
In Cloistered halls each Elk recalls
His Brothers where’er they be,
And traces their faces well-known places
In the annals of memory.
Whether they stand on a foreign land
Or lie in an earthen bed,
Whether they be on the boundless sea
With the breakers of death ahead.
Whate’er their plight on this eerie night
Whate’er their fate may be
Where ever they are be it near or far
They are thinking of you and me.
So drink from the fountain of fellowship
To the Brother who clasped your hand,
And wrote your worth in the rock of earth
And your faults upon the sand.
To our absent Brothers
Fraternally yours, Larry Petersen

We will be hosting a fundraiser on September 21st for the Yarnell firefighter’s families. Along with our
dinner, we will be offering a silent auction to help raise even more money for them. I would like to ask all
our members to help me by volunteering to create special gift baskets for this event. We would like a
minimum of 19 to honor each firefighter who lost their life on that tragic day. If you can commit to
helping me please call at (520) 723-9045 or email me at [email protected]. We deeply appreciate
your help, let’s show our firefighter families that this lodge cares!
Thank you so much,
Pat Metzler
