Cambridge Minnesota Kennel Club Meeting August 6, 2012

Call Meeting To Order by President Tim Bergeron at 7:10 p.m.

Attendance: Tim Bergeron, Wayne Harmon, Michelle Gainsley, Gretchen Hofheins-Wackerfuss, Cheryl Zaic, Carol Wirk-kunen, Nancy Bergeron, and Theresa Goiffon. Approval of the Agenda and Minutes: A motion to approve agenda as read made by Grechen, seconded by Carol Wirk-kunen. Treasurer's Report : No report Standing Committee Reports President's Report: Tabled Secretary's Report: Request received via email from Tricia and Jeff Anclam asking if we might know of a breeder willing to let their singleton, Nupak, Alaskan Malamute be reared by another litter. Knowing it's not easy to raise a singleton. Contact them at [email protected] Tim suggested I send out the request. I have sent out the requested email to all CMKC members. Tim Bergeron has agreed to be interviewed for an article in the next Howler. Theresa will call and set up a time with Tim and Nancy with interview questions. AKC Delegate Report: Wayne will be attending the next Delegate meeting on September 10th and 11th. There will be a vote on the proposed change in Major points with respect to Reserve Winner at a National Breed Specialty. The proposal is to give major points to the Reserve Winner at one National Show per year, if the entries are double that of a 5 point major. Motion approved by Cheryl and seconded by Michelle. 4 CMKC board members in favor, 1 CMKC board member, Gretchen, opposed. Cluster Conformation 2013 No new specialties will be added. Specialties will be in Newfoundland and Nova Scotia Duck Trolling Retrievers. Chow Chow club may be dropping the specialties. We are not at this time seeking other clubs for specialties, however if we are asked we will consider it. We are still in need of Judges, so continue to send in names. We are hoping for younger/newer judges for our panel, but several that have been contacted are unable to participate. This is the list of judges so far: Houston Clark Toddie Clark Faye Strauss Sergio Capps * John Newsome-Reeves Fred Bassett * * contract not returned yet Financial Report: We received our refund check from Onofrio. There were only 2 entries pulled due to majors no entries were pulled due to Judge changes. There were many great dogs represented at the show. Obedience & Rally 2012: Scheduled: August 18 and 19 Stewards are needed at least 1 or 2 more for Saturday and 3 or 4 more for Sunday. Please help if you can. Ron Halling

Minutes Continued…

Spring Obedience and Rally 2013: Scheduled for April 6 and 7 at Total Recall. Judges not hired yet, trophies and catering set. We need each club to have stewards. This will be Gretchen's last year of Obedience Chair, as her job duties have expanded. Agility: Glen needs 2 checks for the agility match by Friday. One made out to On the Run and the other made payable to the Sec-retary of their organization. If not could Glen mail the bills to CMKC to be paid? The paper work is all set for AKC. We are trying to meet the needs of our members interested in Agility. Special Committees: Old (unfinished) Business: None 2nd reading new members: Jane Gronli, Harper Gloria Jean. Holmquist Jennifer, Johnston Jennifer, Ketola Toni, Krause Grete, Kurlander Joan, Nelson Mike, Olson Sue, Olund Catherine, Pearthree Deborah, Williams Norman, Williams Sandra, Wojtowicz Sally. Motion to Approve: Wayne, 2nd Gretchen. Secretary to send out Welcome Letter and Constitution. Isanti County Deputy K-9 Officer: We will invite the Officer to our Annual Picnic and Match on October 28th to make his presentation at 1:00 p.m. just prior to the start of the Match.This K-9 Officer is looking for funds and is willing to do a presentation for us to consider his needs. We can set up a meeting at one of our events and invite him. The match in October would be a good option. Cluster Committee: Nothing to report Request: 1. Boy Scouts Fund Raiser: They will not be selling at this function because they would need to purchase an additional license. 2. Report from Eileen Bowen for Spay/Neuter program: No update on this. CMKC has provided funding for $1,000-2,000 in our budget to the East Central Veterinary Clinic to-ward their puppy pack up to $50 per puppy for this service. New Business: Membership: New member requests: None New Networking Opportunity: Wayne is working with a former CMKC member, Jan MacKimm to help retired police dogs with funds needed. Wayne is hoping to make a connection and be introduced to the Police K-9 unit, so we have a way to work with the Police Federa-tion in a positive way. We will be asking Jan if we can interview her for one of our next newsletter articles. Upcoming Events: October 27th at 2:00 p.m. Annual Picnic and Match at Total Recall December 16th (first choice) or December 2nd Annual Christmas Party to be held at Running Aces. I finished my Pekingese bitch, H.T. Satin Doll, "Dolly", at the Albert Lea

shows. Dolly went WB,BOS on Saturday for a Major.

Then on Sunday "Dolly" went WB, BOW, BOS for another Major! Judges

were Janie Bousek and Toddie Clark.

Also at Albert Lea on Saturday my 8 year old Pug, Ch. Hugapug Ready To

Rock "Rocky" went BOB over a much younger Special! "Rocky" was thrilled

to get back in the Group ring that day after a 5 year absence!!

I decided to bring Rocky back out at our June Cluster shows, to get his

Grand Championship. "Rocky" did get Select Dog 3 out of 4 days at the

Cambridge shows.

Ch. Hugapug Ready To Rock "Rocky" went BISS at The Heart of Minnesota

Pug Dog Club show Friday at Lake Elmo.

Judge was James Frederiksen. I was so very proud of "Rocky" winning a

Pug Specialty show at the age of 8!!

"Rocky" also took BOB on Saturday at Lake Elmo under Judge Jose Luis

Payro and Select Dog on Sunday.

It was a very exciting weekend, one I will never forget!

Obituary Former Club member

Linda Dowdy

Linda Dowdy of Bethel, MN, crossed the “rainbow bridge” into eternity on Monday, August 13, 2012, at age 72.

Linda touched and impacted the lives of many people from all walks of life. Her professional life began with a degree in electrical engineering and a career as a software engineer for Unisys in White Sands, New Mexico. Linda transferred with Unisys to Minneapolis in 1979, a pioneer as one of very few female engineers at that time.

After retiring, she embarked on a fulfilling second career as a flight instructor. She served as chief flight instructor for Anoka-based flight schools, and was named a Master Certificated Flight Instructor and the 2009 Minnesota Flight Instructor of the Year. Her last enterprise, Sim Flite Minnesota, is a premier simulator-based train-ing company. Linda’s gifts as a teacher and mentor helped countless men and women seize the sky and earn their wings.

Such passion characterized her love for animals throughout her life as well: Her home was shared with Malamutes, other breeds, and formerly homeless cats, and she could be found at AKC events as an expert on structure and form, judging sweepstakes classes at Malamute specialty shows. She also took her dogs to competitions in sledding events. Linda held an honorary lifetime membership in the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, was newsletter editor of the Minnesota Malamute Club for several years, and headed AMCA’s chondrodysplasia testing program.

She is survived by her sister, Helen Baumgartner, and “special sister” Sharon Scholl. Linda is also greatly missed by her many friends.

Thank you Vicki Palmer Nielsen, Stacy, MN for letting us know about Linda passing. She will be missed by many.

Positive Reinforcement Dog Training in 5 Simple Steps According to Healthy Pets

The goal is to use very small-sized treats (pea sized is good, and you can even use frozen peas if your dog seems to like them) and verbal praise and affection to encourage desired behaviors in your dog.

Come up with short, preferably one-word commands for the behaviors you want to teach your pet. Examples are Come, Sit, Stay, Down, Heel, Off, etc. Make sure all members of your family consistently use exactly the same command for each behavior.

As soon as your dog performs the desired behavior, reward him immediately with a treat and verbal praise. Do this every time he responds appropriately to a command. You want him to connect the behavior he performed with the treat. This of course means you’ll need to have treats on you whenever you give your dog commands in the beginning.

Keep training sessions short and fun. You want your dog to associate good things with obeying your commands. You also want to use training time as an opportunity to deepen your bond with your pet.

Gradually back off the treats and use them only intermittently once your dog has learned a new behavior. Eventually they’ll no longer be necessary, but you should always reward your dog with verbal praise whenever he obeys a command.

Continue to use positive reinforcement to maintain the behaviors you desire. Reward-based training helps create a range of desirable behaviors in your pet, which builds mutual feelings of trust and confidence.

A Little Veterinary Vaccine History

Vaccination is one of the most hotly debated topics in veterinary medicine today. The reason is because while on the one hand we want to protect companion animals from deadly infectious diseases, we are also very concerned with the problems created by over-vaccination.

When humans are vaccinated against diseases like measles, mumps, rubella and DPT, the immuni-zations given in childhood provide lifetime protection. They are not given again in that child's entire life, much less repeated every year.

When I worked at a humane society 20 years ago, our protocol was to give puppies a five-way com-bination vaccine at 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and 16 weeks, followed by an annual booster every year for the rest of their lives.

When I got to veterinary school and learned vaccines never wear off, I became quite confused about why vets recommend yearly re-vaccinations. So I asked Dr. Schultz how dogs and cats de-velop immunity.

Dr. Schultz explained that my questions were the same ones he asked back in the 1970s – how of-ten do dogs and cats need to be vaccinated, and what vaccines are really required?

In the 1970s there weren't a lot of vaccines available for pets, so according to Dr. Schultz, every time a new one became available, it was added to the syringe.

By the 1980s, there were 12 or 14 different vaccines being delivered as combination products. As an immunologist, Dr. Schultz knew that was not a good idea. And vaccinated pets were beginning to develop adverse reactions, so their bodies also knew the combination vaccines were a bad idea.

In 1978, Dr. Schultz and a colleague, Dr. Fred Scott developed and published a vaccination proto-col. It called for pets to receive puppy or kitten shots, be vaccinated again at a year of age, and then be re-vaccinated every three years or less frequently thereafter.

Change is often a very slow process, and it wasn't until 1998 that the American Association of Fe-line Practitioners issued guidelines very similar to what Dr. Schultz and Dr. Scott published 20 years earlier.
