Members Making WavesLocal Commission Leads ‘Trees for Joplin’ ProjectThe Lee’s Summit Beautification Commission has volunteered to help Joplin by donating and planting flowering trees in a public parkway. The Beautification Commission/Tree Board will coordinate this project, and donors will be invited to go with them to Joplin on October 6 to plant the special Lee’s Summit trees.

Three types of flowering trees will be purchased, using Lee’s Summit donations, from a nursery in Elsberry, Mo. that specializes in an accelerated

rooting system that enhances the growth of young trees.

To get involved, visit treesforjoplinls.com and make a donation via PayPal or credit card. Or mail a check to “Trees for Joplin—LS”, c/o Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce, 320 E. 4th Street, Joplin, MO 64801. Each 15-gallon tree will cost $69, but any amount is welcome. Trees can be given in memory of individuals as well.

Kim Fritchie, chair of the volunteer

Beautification Commission/Tree Board encourages area residents and organizations to join the project. “I know how generous Lee’s Summit people can be, and we look forward to showing Joplin that we haven’t forgotten them. I hope many of you will contribute, tell your friends, and consider going with us to plant the trees in Joplin,” said Fritchie.

Hope House is Awarded Grant to its Mental Health Project

The Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City awarded a grant to Hope House in the amount of $105,875.

“Hope House services available through this project include crisis intervention, group therapy, psycho-educational groups, individual therapy, and substance abuse services.” said MaryAnne Metheny CEO of Hope House. “For those survivors with serious mental illness, they will benefit from assessment, diagnosis, and mental health advocacy. As a result of the Mental Health Project, we know that our clients will increase their knowledge of domestic violence and will reduce their trauma-related anxiety and stress and leave drug free.”

At its August 24 membership luncheon, the Lee’s Summit Chamber of Commerce and its community partners announced the launch of BOOST Lee’s Summit.

BOOST is a new and exciting effort to stimulate economic growth by attracting, creating, supporting and accelerating new and existing businesses within Lee’s Summit and eastern Jackson County. Designed as an online and offline multi-faceted community, BOOST Lee’s Summit exists to inspire, encourage, connect and equip entrepreneurs in our area and help them overcome the challenges of launching their business and getting from a great idea to a great business.

“We believe no one is better prepared to help an entrepreneur navigate through the challenges of launching their business than an entrepreneur who has been there themselves. That’s why BOOST Lee’s Summit is a community-led initiative with a leadership team of some of the area’s most successful entrepreneurs and business leaders,” said Nancy Bruns, chamber president. “This will be a game-changer when it comes to providing direct access and connectivity to resources, connections and capital; it’s an entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

There are numerous opportunities for Chamber members who serve the business community to participate, especially as a preferred resource or business coach.

BOOST Lee’s Summit is offering a free community membership that will allow anyone interested in learning more about the initiative. To sign up, go to boostleessummit.com.

The Value of MembershipAd-Trend is a locally owned and operated billboard plant, specializing also in Grand Opening and promotional advertising. For years, the City of Lee's Summit has had regulations prohibiting many of our promotional items, such as banners, balloons and searchlight. For this reason, Ad-Trend did very little, to no business in the area. However, when approached by the Chamber in regards to a billboard, I strongly entertained the idea of joining. They had a lot of good things to say, and I'm thankful I listened. The results after joining have blown me away and were instant.

After joining, our phone calls from the Lee's Summit area increased by 20 percent over the first three months compared to the year before. Most of the people on the phone cited the Chamber, wanting to take advantage of our Chamber discount.

Clients include Owen Lumber, Marian's Kids, Noe's Jewelry, Lee’s Summit Chamber’sOktoberfest, several others and even the Chamber has booked either a billboard, or an On-site promotion product with us. Some people rented billboards, some balloons, some searchlight or banners.Regardless, the business is always appreciated.

Most importantly, the community has been terrific to work with. It is such a friendly place, full of terrific business owners. I can firmly say that the Chamber membership is one item that is going to be fixed into our budget every year, as we look forward to continuing to work with the community. The people there have been fabulous to work with, and everything is so easy compared to other Chambers in the region.

The Chamber Young Professional events are very productive, and the mailings always helpful. Personally, I have moved to Lee’s Summit since joining the Chamber, and have really enjoyed getting to know the residents around town.

I would personally and professionally recommend the Chamber to anyone who is trying to decide to join. It is easily one of the best investments my business has made in the last several years.

David English, vice presidentAd-Trend, Inc.
