SEPTEMBER 2012 Save the Date! Brookwood Middle School Welcome Back! It is important to get students acclimated with being on time to school right away. Students need to be at school at 8:25 a.m. which means students need to be in the building before that time. We stress the importance of this for many reasons. 1. We try to avoid interruptions to class. 2. It gives students the time they need to get prepared for the start of the day. 3. Students won’t miss important morning messages from their teacher or from the principal. We do have a tardy policy that states: A detention will be issued to students after (3) tardies to school. Please reinforce this expectation and rule with your child. Principal’s Corner Welcome Back! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to parents/guardians of whom I have not had the pleasure to meet. My name is Onquanette Nowels-Pierce and I am the Principal here at Brookwood Middle School. On behalf of the Middle School staff I would like to say we are very excited about this school year. Brookwood Middle School is jumping up and down about making AYP in Mathematics on ISAT this past spring. There was a 12% increase in our Math scores when compared to last year’s ISAT results. We are very excited to see the students back in the swing of things so quickly. Over the course of the year you will receive monthly newsletters with important information regarding upcoming events, community happenings, students acknowledgements, home-school connections for parents and much more. Our goal is to provide students with instruction that will enrich their minds and enable them to solve problems through higher order thinking. We want to prepare students for real world events that they can apply academic values to become productive citizens in their community and in their professions. With your help we can prepare our students for the future. Remember the old saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”. We here at Brookwood Middle School have our arms and hearts open to be the village that will partnership with you to prepare our students for a bright future. Looking forward to a productive year. Welcome Back! It is important to get students acclimated with being on time to school right away. Students need to be at school at 8:25 a.m. which means students need to be in the building before that time. We stress the importance of this for many reasons.

Reading Strategies Connecting is the reading strategy that we will focus on for September. After reading students will be able to connect text-to-text, text-to-self, or text-to-world. Students will learn a different reading strategy each month and they will be expected to use these strategies throughout the school year while reading in different subjects. Look for ways you can further assist your child with learning the Connecting strategy in our Home-School connections of this newsletter.

SEPTEMBER 2012 BROOKWOOD MIDDLE SCHOOL

We took the first week of school to teach students how to be PAWSome as they rotated through our PAWS stations. PAWS stands for Positive Accountable Well-mannered Students. Each station taught students about school expectations, which are outlined in our Parent-Student handbook. Ms. Pederson (School Social Worker) went around to classrooms to teach Bullying Awareness. Anti-Bullying classroom discussions centered around what defines bullying, students' perceptions of what bullying is, brainstorming different ways to handle bullying when confronted with the situation as either a bystander or victim. Students' shared their experiences with bullying and what techniques have and have not worked for them in the past. Students also signed Anti-Bullying pledges that are displayed in the main hallway of BMS. Students pledged to: Not bully others, To help kids who are bullied, To include people who are left out, and To tell an adult when they see someone being bullied or are being bullied themselves. BMS students have 100% agreed to 'United We Stand, Divided We Fall'! Our theme this year is “UNITED WE STAND, DIVIDED WE FALL”. The BMS Timberwolves pledged to stand together against Bullying. Students participated in a poster contest showcasing this year’s theme. Although we seen many creative posters, one winner was chosen from 5th and 6th grade. Their posters are below. We also had a door-decorating contest showcasing the theme. Again, we saw many creative doors throughout the school. The winning classrooms were Ms. Belka’s 5th grade classroom and

Mrs. Hollimon’s 6th grade classroom. Pictures of the winning doors are featured on the next page.

6th Grade Winner: Jose

5th Grade Winner: Aniyah
