I must thank all of you that were able to venture out, as many of you provided Connie and me the opportunity to restock our wine cellar. We are amazed at how many captains are able to go speeding directly past Katana and not make even a sideways glance at a fellow boater, let alone the Commodore. Many thanks to those of you who saluted us, it was appreciated. To those of you who missed the dip but unflinchingly paid your debt, we thank you also. On the business side, the following is a brief update of the significant initiatives we have ongoing.

Your BYC/Harbourside Liaison Committee has been working to keep up with recent decisions made at City Hall and the resulting impacts and changes. Kai Kreuchen has kindly put together an update which you will also find in this edition.

Your Breakwater Committee held another Town Hall meeting on September 21, where the committee was seeking assistance from membership on how the committee should proceed. The 70 or so members present felt strongly that there be two motions, one to seek approval to proceed with a replacement program, and the second to define the spending limit.

You will have received in the mail the official notice for the AGM scheduled for November 8, 2011. This AGM will be combined with a SGM to present these two motions. The final decision on which product and vendor is selected would occur after our SGM/AGM.

Given the turmoil of the world’s financial situation, BYC can take great pride in our success in holding the line on costs while offering well maintained and desirable facilities and outstations. These ongoing inflationary trends do impact us however. Therefore, as per the July Budget submission, your Board approved what we feel is a reasonable and minimal 3.6% increase to everyone’s assessment.

We are impacted by such trends as:

• Aging facilities with increased maintenance requirements• Increased costs of materials, specifically building materials and metals and the

effect this has had on roof, anchor, etc replacement programs• Inflation effecting support services and products we receive• Increase to the number of owned outstations

However, considering the scope and magnitude of all these issues, the staff and volunteer labour at our club continue to do an exemplary job of keeping our increases to an absolute minimum. It is interesting to note that the gap in rates between our total moorage costs at the Burrard Yacht Club versus rates for similar private moorage in the local area is significant. Not only do we pay much lower rates, we benefit from and get back so much more. In anticipation of a strong turnout for the upcoming SGM/AGM on November 8, 2011, please note that the venue will be the Pinnacle Hotel in North Vancouver. With the inclusion of this very important SGM and to provide sufficient time for the expected discussion, your Directors will post their year end reports on our web site prior to November 1 instead of the usual reading of the reports. We hope that you will take time to read these prior to the AGM, therefore allowing for a quality question period.

Reminder, BYC will again host Remembrance Day off Cates Park.

2011 Installation Dinner November 19Invitations for the 2011 Installation Dinner are going out shortly. Cost will be the same as last year at $65 plus HST.

Similar to last year, we’ve opted to have the cocktail reception with appetizers as many of you told us it was fantastic and to continue. We’ve changed our meat options to filet steak or fish on recommendation from both you and the hotel. This year, with two options only I am assured things will be much better.

The hotel has offered to us the same “take the elevator home” deal as last. You can call the Pinnacle at

604-986-7437 or www.pinnaclepierhotel.com to get our preferred rate of $129 per night (harbour side) using our Group ID of “BYC Installation Event”.

Parking will also be provided for our members.

As with the past, once invitations are out, you can RSVP through Laura in the office to book your table.

I’d like to assemble a picture presentation of your year on the water. Forward to me a few of your best pictures to my [email protected] email address and I will include them as part of our “memories” from boating season 2011.

Booking Pender Outstation

In an effort to increase the usage of the shore facilities at our Pender Harbour outstation the Board of Directors recently agreed that

the Burrard Yacht Club will offer the use of the Pender Harbour Outstation cabin and shore facilities to Associate members , ( shore facilities only , no moorage ) . Active members will be able to book the shore facilities 90 days in advance and Associate members will be able to book 60 days in advance. This policy will be for a 12 month trial period.

Harbourside Update

On June 17 Vice Commodore Lea Bancroft and I attended the City Council meeting to observe Concert’s presentation. In essence they requested a deferral of their application to engage in further community liaison and to upgrade their OCP amendment application to a fully detailed rezoning application. Council deferred their decision to a future Council Meeting attended by all members.

On July 18 Council resolved that Harbourside be referred to a special Task Force consisting of property owners, business people, neighbours and advisory committees to review material produced to date.

Subsequently, on September 12, 2011 Council resolved that consideration of Harbourside be deferred until January 2012.

Chuck Brook confirmed they are not working on the project at this time.

The yellow fencing around the vacant lot on Gostick Place suggests the City has concluded

its land swap with the owner. The City has its east/west link in exchange for a portion of road, making the parcel rectangular and more efficient.

This exchange means BYC can not now offer any compromise Spirit Trail route except at the foreshore. Richard

White advised recently that the City is looking for an interactive, visually exciting walk-way experience and that overlooking a car park on BYC property does not meet that intent.

We will just have to work harder next year to reach a solution which meets the wishes of all parties.

Pender Grand Opening Party

The Pender cruise was a big success! The rafting of boats med style worked very well thanx to a few members arriving early & stern tying to the north towards the park. The weather was great for most of the weekend & allowed a trip to Jedadiah by dinghy on Friday morning to secure 3 giant buckets of oysters for happy hr. Hence the new oyster beds forming on our beach. After breakfast Saturday everyone broke into 5 teams for one of Dave’s famous treasure hunts & what a hunt! (I’d hate to live in his brain) After the dinghy’s returned lunch was served & the teams went off to practice a skit they had to present later @ happy hour to finish the hunt. What a talented bunch we have! The Commodore’s team were declared the winners but it was very close. Rumour has it the skits may appear on youtube soon. Dinner that night was great thanks to Marco & his crew. The pig & chicken almost disappeared. A 50/50 draw was held raising $540 & T-shirts with a portrait of Pender by Dave Thompson were sold & presented as awards. Sunday saw a few boats make a run for home early.

In spite of some last minute cancellations we ended up with 22 boats & around 70 people. Final accounting is it appears close to breaking even as the 50/50 has not been claimed yet. (some misplaced their tickets)

Many thanks to the volunteers & special thanx to Dave Thompson & Marko for making this event such a success!

Note: One of our lucky BYC members is sitting with a winning ticket from the 50/50 draw - #268974 – Please contact Mike with your ticket stub and you will be the lucky recipient of $240.00!

Fall CruiseSeptember 9, 10, 11

Clementine Outstation“BURRARD’S GOT TALENT!”

Apparently Burrard does have talent! At least 125 members and their families think so on over 45 boats that attended the fall cruise. The weather couldn’t have been better and it felt more like mid–summer than fall. Our dockmaster Gord Kleaman did a great job of fitting everyone in.

“Junkyard Barbie Wars” was a hit with 10 teams building Barbie boats to compete for fastest boat, most creative propulsion, and Barbie with the best personality. Team Nelson won for fastest across the finish line, while Team Jordan won most creative propulsion & Team McGivney for “Goth” Barbie in her PFD. All the teams did a great job and came up with some pretty amazing crafts & we’re proud that no Barbie’s were killed in the competition, in spite of being shot out of a flare gun! Thanks to Maureen Graham for overseeing the event.

The food was fantastic & plentiful with a great breakfast, lunch with burgers, dogs & smokies & a dinner of steak, chicken, salmon, crab, baked potatoes, corn on the cob & salad. Thanks to all the cooks, servers, peelers (corn) & other volunteers including Bill Sherwin, Colin Dunwoody, Terry Bubb, Gary McGregor, Brian McClements, Patrick on the potatoes & John McCallum.

The happy hour cocktails by Desiree & Chelsea Nelson were a big hit, especially making margaritas & daiquiris’ with a gas powered blender! Thanks also to Dave and Penny Thompson for the after-dinner special coffees.

Looks like “A” Dock won the volleyball event (again!) although it was down to the wire in the finals. Marion Lockhead won the Crib tournament (Hosted by Alex Maier), Chelsea Nelson beat the event organizer out of “The Game” finals by 3 points (Hosted by Wendy McGregor). Karrina McGivney & brother Karl picked up the win in Horseshoes (hosted by Zale Martell). The kids seemed to enjoy the fishing derby and crafts too (Hosted by Gary Kleaman). Special thanks to Suzanne & Cliff Taylor for looking after all the kids’ events & prizes. Even our four legged family members enjoyed the weekend with Heather Dunwoody putting on the timed doggy obstacle course on Sunday.

The crowd went wild when Stephen Tyler, J-Lo & Randy Jackson hit the stage as our esteemed judges on “Burrard’s Got Talent”. Craig Seacrest did a great job of emceeing our event! The talent was just too amazing to list everyone & all received a prize. We all enjoyed watching the singers, gymnastics, Karate Exhibitions, dancers, Hula dancing and poetry! A big thank–you to all the participants and to our talent scout Gayle Robson, Emcee - Craig Lockhead, and judging by Mr. & Mrs. Commodore & Mr. Vice Commodore!

Rumour has it there may be a short film coming to our club website soon, so stay tuned. Many, many thanks to all the volunteers that helped pull this event off. There are way too many to thank but special thanks to James, Travis & the boys for all the work they do with getting all the equipment up to Clementine and then back to the club and to my wife Betty who did most of the work.

Respectfully submitted, Mike Davison Fleet Captain

BC Spot PrawnsSpot prawns are the largest of the 7 commercial species of shrimp found in Canada’s west coast waters. The prawns body colour is usually reddish brown or orange with white horizontal bars on the carapace (shell) and distinctive white spots on the first and fifth abdominal segments. While large females can exceed 23 cm (9 inches) in total length, the restricted carapace (shell) size limit for harvest is 33 mm (1 1/3 inch) long. The spot prawn is known for its sweet, delicate flavour and firm texture.

Prawning like a proMy wife and I decided to try our hand at prawning. We bought our trap, line, and buoy, headed out to the prawning grounds, baited it with

all the juiciest cat food we could find and dropped it down. As the pot soaked overnight, we dreamt of the savory delights that awaited us the next day.

Much to our surprise however, the wily prawns completely eluded us. Not to be outwitted by a shrimp, we altered our strategy to use smelly old chicken for bait this time. However, once again we came up empty! Now utterly dejected we headed over to Gibsons for some lunch. One of the more experienced fishermen there took a look at our pots and asked, “How was the crabbing?” - name withheld to protect their dignity.

BYC Poetry(Something to do while you spend 8 weeks cruising)

It's the Burrard Yacht Club family weekend and talent show We are members 5 months old We had no idea what to do So we wrote this poem for you

My name is Bill and my name is LizWe''ll tell our story as part of this biz

Our journey began on an April weekendWhen the Shankey's took pity on us as our boat was on the mend They invited us to Ekins, oh what a delight We thank Conor and Karen for their foresight They knew we"d be a fit...they were right!

At Ekins we met the Goodheart's and some others as well The nicest of folks, it was a quick sell A club where the members welcome you with open arms An outstation like Ekins, with all its' charm Immediately Bill said write the cheque, we belong The cheque was written, the Ap was mailed And we waited, with breath bated, for the cheque to clear

The cheque was cashed, the letter cameWe made the cut, we becameMembers of the Burrard Yacht Club

Hence on, there was no holding us backWe were on a mission, we were on trackTo enjoy this club, that was our mandate We'd throw ourselves into it, it was our fate

We joined in the Saill Past, oh what a spectacle Steeped in history and pageantry It was quite eventful We saluted Peter and Connie, the Commodore and his wife And we thank them for embracing us and sharing their insights

On our first venture out to Bowen we head On the way there our engine went dead The gauge said full...it was not so In we come under tow There on the dock are Burns and Joanne To help us out, to lend a hand There was no hesitation at all on their part That's why being members of the Burrard Yacht Club is so smart

Rod and Gail of PaesanoAre another two we honor

We met them at Ekins one dayThere was only us fourCome for a hike they sayOf course we say, for sureIt was quite a hike we recallLiz bringing up the rearGail making sure that Liz was still there

We met Tony and Edith of Good Day, EhIn his Boston Whaler he makes his wayPutting down his prawn traps, two at a time Better than one, he tells Bill at his side So Bill gets the drill, he's ready to try Low and behold 5 pulls later, 300+ prawns at our feet lie

Larry and Joanne of Delfini fameTwo lovelier people we couldn't nameBill watched 400+ feet of prawn lineGo over the side of our boatHe couldn't catch it in timeLarry came to his rescueNo problem, he says, I'll lend you some prawn line So you can begin Catching those prawns for all to feast Prawns for appy hour - oh what a treat

Tim and Janine, the Bravo Zulu teamAre another couple we met at Ekins one eve Tim with his dinghy ready to show Bill around Janine with her Kindle not making a sound

Last but not least, Alex and Mel, what can we say Generous and fun loving that is their way They gave us a thrill we'll never forget When in Squirrel Cove on a warm sunny day We rode the rapids, hi ho silver, all the way

In Lund one day we run into Alex and Mel again Our windlass had ceased, we were displeased As our vacation would come to an end Alex to the rescue, it"s a fuse he says He has a spare and on our way we were sent With smiles on our faces To Tenedos Bay we went

What began as a limerick became an epic poem Once the writing began it had a life of it's own There are many more people we've met Too many to mention here We"ve enjoyed the ride so far We look forward to next year And meeting many more Members of the Burrard Yacht Club

Bill & Liz Iversen, S.V. Felice Bear

A Note from your Safety Director

I recently received the following message from the Transportation Safety Board.

Awareness of First Narrows Traffic Regulations

On 17 April 2011, the tug Pacific Avenger was towing a barge loaded with 80,000 barrels of diesel oil inbound through the First Narrows entrance to Vancouver Harbour, B.C. As the tug and tow entered the first narrows, the 2.5 knot ebb current caused the barge to veer 90 degrees off the intended course. At the same time, the sailing vessel Namba was outbound in the First Narrows commercial traffic lanes. As a result, a close quarters situation developed between the Namba and the Pacific Avenger and its tow. As the tug attempted to regain control of the barge, while dealing with the close quarters situation, the barge nearly ran aground. The crew of the Pacific Avenger was able to regain control of the barge and continue on its voyage with tug assistance. (TSB Occurrence No. MllW0047).

Information obtained by the TSB revealed that, following protocols for a Dangerous Goods transit through the First Narrows, the Marine Communications and Traffic Services (MCTS)Center had issued a "CLEAR NARROWS" broadcast on VHF channels 12 and 16, advising all marine traffic of the requirement to keep clear of First Narrows to allow for an unimpeded transit of the tug and barge. Despite this broadcast, the operator of the Namba did not follow the rules and regulations governing vessel traffic control within the First Narrows entrance to Vancouver Harbour and proceeded outbound in the center of the commercial traffic lane.

In addition to the Transport Canada Collision Regulations, the Port of Vancouver Small Craft Guide- Burrard Inlet and the Port Metro Vancouver Harbour Operations Manual clearly outline vessel traffic control patterns, communications, and harbour specific rules. Vessels' awareness of and adherence to the requirements outlined in these publications helps to ensure the safe and unimpeded transit of vessels that are unable to deviate from their intended route due to their restricted ability to manoeuver.

The following section from the Port Metro Vancouver Harbour Operations Manual is provided for your information. You can obtain the full Manual at their website www.portmetrovancouver.com.

It is also suggested that you obtain the “Port of Vancouver Small Craft Guide” at www.belcarra.ca/Burrard_Inlet_Small_Craft_Guide.pdf.

3.1.6 Clearing Narrows

The term “Clear Narrows” is defined as the transit of a vessel through either First or Second Narrows, unimpeded and not met, overtaken or crossed ahead of by any other vessel.

The MCTS Centre will issue a “Clear Narrows” clearance upon request by the master of a vessel that requires a clear passage through either First or Second Narrows, provided that traffic conditions allow.

The MCTS Centre will issue a “Clear Narrows” clearance on VHF Channel 16 followed by a broadcast on VHF Channel 12.

Light tugs and other highly maneuverable small vessels may be granted a compliance exemption from the MCTS Centre.

Sagas of Sammy SeagullThe Board addressed the members at the Pender Harbour SGM in winter uniform…in May. Hmmm…the quick thinking Commodore told the members he asked for winter uniform

to avoid him soiling his whites immediately before Sailpast. Soiling? With what? Vin rouge?

That was the worst Sailpast weather since Steve MacDonald’s almost 20 years ago. Did you hear the announcement? Would the owner of a Mercedes convertible put the top up? It was so cold that Sheryl Gowland gave Connie Valkenburg a sweater to wear and the Commodore ended up wearing it while saluting the fleet. The combination of the weather and a Canucks game moved the party from the parking lot to the clubhouse. In the middle of the game Niki Bancroft bumped into the entertainment system and shut it down. Not to be out done Steve Goldie did the same thing in the next period. Steve, by the way, was wearing socks. Mike Davison wasn’t. Tom Hammond was wearing his Mexican navy pants he bought cheap in Puerto Vallarta. One leg is about 3 inches shorter than the other.

Gary Salmon, who apparently hates bagpipes was seen wearing earplugs as the Commodore was being piped along the docks. Only two vessels had fenders hanging down, Mariteem and Delfini while they passed the Commodore. Bad crew. There were a couple of bad skippers too with Wolfgang Duntz’ Wanderer and Jordan Shishmanov’s Sea Witch vibrating the turn boat’s anchor chain. That’s how Nancy Argue described it. Jordan, as many know, is a bit of an electronics specialist so it is a little strange that his VHF hums so bad. Dave Mehain wasn’t seen at Sailpast so no one could ask him about the two times this winter he splashed off the swimgrid of his Tolly.

Jim Dykeman continues to improve his recently acquired Tolly. This time he replaced his ten gallon holding tank with the largest he could fit in the allotted space. After careful measuring he went all the way to Ladner to get the largest that would fit, but it wasn’t until he got it to the boat that he discovered it would fit the space but

not through the opening. Back to Ladner for a new slightly smaller tank.

One would think with all the print Touché skipper Gary Tolly Salmon attracts that Gary would not ask Sammy’s wife to dial his missing cell phone to try to locate it. There it was, ringing in the bilge in a puddle of bilge water.

Staff Captain Steve Goldie told Sammy he missed being in print as he was locking his dinghy to a dock in False Creek. Only problem is he forgot to loop the lock through anything on the dinghy so the only thing locked was the lock itself.

He was sure happy with his purchase. It was Alex Maier’s dinghy and quite an improvement for Fun Time skipper Scott Graham at least until the first attempt to load the heavier dinghy with the dinghy crane. Splash down came the dinghy and the crane. Too heavy, Scott?

Game two of the Stanley Cup final and the struggle was stay home and watch the game or go to Ekins. The sun was out and a number of boats headed to Ekins where Ron Grierson set up his not so big TV on the dock and ran the satellite feed. Trouble was the bright sun and the 5PM start made it nearly impossible to see. Guess it didn’t matter that Bob Robertson and Tommy Simpson were just heading back to the TV for the overtime when the heard the roar 11 seconds into OT. Burrows was just too quick.

They were just leaving for 3 months and Paul volunteered to get the comforter from the dry cleaners. The white comforter Theresa took to the dry cleaners. What did Paul say when he showed up at Balcori with a yellow comforter? “I didn’t look at the colour.” Their comforter was delivered a few days later. Wouldn’t better planning make it easier? They planned their annual Barkley Sound trip well in advance but at the last moment decided they should have satellite TV. Rather than delay their departure they headed Santara to Victoria where Alf Burt boarded a bus and ferry back to Vancouver to pick-up the sat dome. It arrived late so Alf missed the ferry back.

From the EditorSeveral months ago I was talking with Terry and he mentioned that he would eventually be moving to the Island and that I should consider taking over the Trident. My first reaction was, how dumb does he think I am?

I didn’t think too much about it until a couple months later when Terry sounded serious this time as he said, “Cliff, you should take over the Trident.” I told him that I would think about it

but I was concerned about where all the content comes from. No worries, he assured me, members send in the stories and all I would need to do is cut and paste.

That didn’t sound too bad so I gave it some thought. It occurred to me that by taking on the Trident it would become much easier to keep the two main communication tools that we have at the club synchronized, the newsletter and the website (for those of you that may not know, I also manage the club website). So when Commodore Valkenburg approached me about editing the Trident, I had had enough time to fully override my natural instinct of flight.

I do believe that by working on the Trident I have a great opportunity to help keep club members better informed of events, stories, and important news. But I also want to make it clear that this is the first newsletter that I have worked on and I fully realize that I do not possess exceptional wordcrafting abilities. All comments, ideas, and suggestions will be fully appreciated. The Trident is a member supported newsletter. As such it relies heavily on your contributions.

I would like to acknowledge all of the hard work that Terry Murphy and those who preceded him have put into this institution.

So here we are with the September, 2011 BYC Trident. You will notice that the format has changed a bit. I hope you enjoy it. Summer was short and sweet this year but full of interesting stories to tell. The September issue is always a big one because we skip August and there is so much to report after a busy cruising season. Do you have a humorous anecdote or interesting tidbit to share? If so, you can always send it to [email protected] or drop papers & photo disks off at the office in the Trident mail slot. Thanks! - Cliff Taylor
