MESSAGE FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT

Latoya Lane currently serves as the Director of Reentry with the Florida Department of Corrections. Lane has worked in the

correctional field since 1998, when she was hired as a Youth Supervisor and Correctional Counselor for the Illinois Department of

Corrections, after earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology and a Bachelor of Arts degree in African American Studies from

Eastern Illinois University earlier that year. She subsequently earned her Master of Science degree in Family Services from Eastern

Illinois University, and in May 2003 became Program Director of a foster care agency in Owensboro, Kentucky.

In June 2010, Lane received a PhD with a specialization in Criminal Justice at Capella University.

In her most recent position with the Indiana Department of Correction, Lane served as the Agency’s Deputy Chief/Strategic Planner.

While in this role she developed and implemented a new and innovative process, which involved over 140 staff, to disseminate the

AUGUST MINUTES CHAPTER MEETING

TALLAHASSEE AREA CHAPTER OF NIGP, INC.

Date: August 9, 2011 Location: Tallahassee/Leon County Civic Center Number in Attendance: 44 Call to Order: President Donna Smith called the meeting to order at 12:02 PM. Pledge: Ed Valla, Department of State Invocation: Kathy Hutchins, Department of State Minutes: Ed Valla motioned to approve the July General Membership Meeting Minutes and Janet Garrison seconded. Motion passed. New Members and Guests: No new members or members were recognized. New UPPCC Certifications: No Report. President: No Report Treasurer: The software license, maintenance fee and SSL certificate fee for Chapter Manager (TACNIGP.com website) is one of our biggest expenses. We were one of the first NIGP Chapters to adopt this system, and it has made tracking lunches, meetings, conferences, special events and recertification points much more manageable. However, with finances as they are, we investigated other less costly options. Star Chapter and Cvent are two systems that we examined. Cvent is more of a teleconferencing solution, so this was not an option. Star Chapter is less expensive, but does not track recertification points and has a high, set-up fee. President Donna Smith, Board Member Brenda Wells, Claudia Cooper and myself called NewLinear Group (Chapter Manager), and spoke with the owner/software developer. We indicated that we were looking at alternatives, and wanted to see if he could ‘sharpen his pencil’ . He agreed, and reduced this year’ s price by $1,000 (from $3,989 to $2,989). He also agreed to reduce the price by $1,500/year if we sign a four-year contract extension. The Board will discuss this offer, so please let us know your thoughts on this issue.
