from tHe Pastor

Dear Friends,

This weekend at the 9:30 Mass we will be recognizing and commissioning our great catechists. Think of the many, many areas that members of our parish participate in this ministry. While the first that come to mind for many of us are teachers, our school teachers and PRP, there are so many others that enter into this important work, who all share the faith.

There are those involved in RCIA, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, and the RCIC, the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children. There are those involved in preparing for other sacraments, as well; namely, preparing families for baptism, preparing our young people for confirmation, and preparing our couples for marriage. There are teams of people involved in this process, which often includes our families as mentors and sponsors. Our 2nd grade teachers, in school and PRP prepare our children for the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, which truly involves our families in a year-long instruction.

In addition, we are blest by so many who serve as catechists through Bible Study, Faith Formation, training our servers and liturgical ministers of the Church teaching behind why we do what we do. Our Social Action provides instruction on current and pressing issues from Landato Si to immigration. Our Health Ministries provides instruction on current health issues such as “end of life” concerns and organ donation.

Our many people involved in Eucharistic Adoration, Sacred Heart Enthronement and True Devotion to Mary provide information to us all, which is, at its heart, exercising the role of a catechist.

I would be remiss if I neglected to mention a particular group which has their collective hands in many of the ministries mentioned above—our deacons. Thank you to Deacons Bill Mullaney, Dave Shea, Dave Shaffer, Mike Cassani, Russ Feldkamp, Mark Johnson and Graham Galloway. Your catechesis efforts are a blessing to our parish.

Clearly, we are blest by so many who help to provide instruction in so many areas of the faith. Thank you all for all you do to help make our parish ministries such a great gift to us.

God bless,

Fr. Tom

Due to Bishop Dan Conlon’s travel and family commitments, he will not be able to stay after Mass for our dinner and reception. He would still like to visit with any parishioners and friends, if possible. So, we are setting aside Heritage Hall from 3:30–4:30 for him to receive people and visit on Saturday, September 21 prior to Mass.

IHM was Bishop Conlon’s first assignment when he was ordained in 1977. After serving as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati and authoring the procedures for Child Protection in our Archdiocese, he was named the Bishop of Steubenville. He is now the Bishop of the Joliet Diocese in Illinois.

4 Immaculate Heart of mary ParIsH We are a welcoming Catholic community centered in the Eucharist,

Fathers TeamCome to Fathers Team at the IHM Welcome Center (2d floor of the South end of the Bldg) at 6:03AM on Friday, Sept 20, as Team 3 will have a surprise topic in our “open mic” session. This session will be worth your attendance.

WOW! Bible Study, facilitated by Sharon Johnson, will be starting up Tuesday, September 17th from 9:30–11:30 a.m. with a study of Daniel followed by The Book of Revelation! Apocalyptic literature at its best! If you’ve ever wondered about these mysterious texts, please join us for great conversation and great fellowship! No prior knowledge needed. Registration forms are in the Faith Formation Office, or you may call 513-388-4093.

Parish Breakfasts Resume! Our monthly Parish breakfast, prepared and served by the members of our Knights of Columbus, will be resuming this Sunday, September 15. Council members will prepare and serve breakfast after the 7:30 AM and 9:30 AM Masses on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Menu choices will include eggs, sausage, pancakes, hash browns, goetta, Servatii donuts, coffee, and juices. And of course, made-to-order omelets are always a big hit! (And we should note that the breakfast team includes some hard-working IHM students – sons of our Knights, who may someday be Knights themselves!)

Many of our Parishioners have discovered that the monthly breakfasts are not only a delicious way to start their Sunday, but also a great opportunity to enjoy the company of fellow IHM Parishioners.

Annual Christmas Day DinnerDecember 25 may seem like a long way away, but our Knights’ Council is already planning for our annual Christmas Day Dinner. As in previous years, Our Council will prepare and host a Christmas Day dinner for members of the Parish and the community. The dinner will be open to all who want to join us for a holiday meal. (Last year more than 130 meals were served or delivered on Christmas Day.) Please consider joining us; our Council members are always happy to have Parishioners join us in hosting and delivering Christmas dinners. Contact Bob Hilmer if you would like to help, 477-4250.

Women to Women in Faith and FellowshipMonday, September 16th at 6:30pm in the St.Matthew room. Contact: Candi Rinderle and Susie O’Neil.

Like to cook? Dinners for the Priests ministry prepares meals for priests three days a week and delivers them to the parish office. Each volunteer prepares meals approximately once or twice monthly. You pick your day. Interested? Call Mimi Frey 513-225-4600

Altar Server Training Our next training for the Altar Server Ministry will be September 24, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the church.

We invite all young people in grades 5 and up and adults who want to join this ministry to the training. Please allow 90 minutes for the training, which includes walking through the Server’s roles and duties before, during and after Mass. Deacon Shaffer will commission the newly trained servers at the end of the evening, enabling them to serve at Mass as early as the next day.

You will identify a weekend Mass time you most often attend or prefer to be scheduled for, but please understand we may occasionally ask that you serve at a different Mass time. While we look to grow this ministry at all Mass celebrations, we have most critical needs for Altar Servers at 5PM Saturdays, 7:30AM and 6PM Mass Sundays. We ask that you commit to serve at a minimum of one weekend liturgy each month and more often if possible. Students that attend IHM’s day school will be scheduled to serve weekday Mass. PRP students will have the opportunity to serve weekday Masses during school breaks and the summer months.

To reserve your place at the training, or for more information, please contact Ed Bayliss or Gloria Ann Castleman using the Altar Server email address [email protected] You may also call the Parish Office at 388-4466.

See you in church!

Fair Trade Seller Needed After the 1:30 MassCan you spare 30 minutes of your time after the 1:30 PM Sunday Spanish Mass once a month? The IHM Fair Trade ministry needs someone to help sell these delicious products (coffee, chocolate & olive oil) on the second Sunday of every month. This is an excellent opportunity to add a little social action ministry to your life. Or, for the aspiring Spanish speaker, a good chance to practice your Spanish. In either case, it is not necessary to speak Spanish. Please call or email Jim Burridge to volunteer or ask questions. 474-3850 [email protected]

Food from the HeartMany Thanks to all the parishioners who brought food to “fill the shelves” at the SEM Food Pantry. Thanks to our team of volunteers who pick up food from Kroger, transport the food, fill the shelves and transport food to the disabled at SEM Manor. Many of the disabled at SEM Manor cannot get to the pantry so appreciate the delivery. If you would like to help on Monday after the collection, please call Sherrie Heyse at 513-843-7188.

Fall is a time of harvest so if you have extra garden veggies, please bring directly to the SEM Pantry. Food insecurity does not take a vacation so remember to bring a few items for the shelves of the SEM Pantry to the third Sunday Food from the Heart Collection. Due to possible breakage, please do not bring items in glass containers. The Southeastern Ecumenical Ministry Pantry is now located in the basement of the “old office” building at IHM. Clients enter the pantry from Columbus Street. If anyone would like to volunteer time at the pantry, call Charlie Gentry at 513-300-8173. Monetary donations may be sent to the SEM Pantry at 1260 Columbus Av. Cincinnati OH 45255. Additional donations can be made during open hours of Monday-Wednesday-Thursday-Friday 10 am-2pm and Tuesday evening 5:30-7pm.

Welcome! Christ Renews Is it time for you to take a retreat? Our lives are very busy and the many burdens we bear dominate our hearts, minds, and actions. IHM’s Welcome! Christ Renews Retreat (formerly Christ Renews His Parish or CRHP) offers an opportunity to leave the burdens behind, to disconnect from the noise that surrounds us and to reconnect with God who loves us. It is a chance to recognize that we all carry similar burdens, that there is a brotherhood and sisterhood among us that connects us as a Christian community.

What is Welcome! Christ Renews? It is a day and a half long retreat experience, from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon, and is held right here on IHM’s campus. It is free of charge, a true gift of the parish. What is asked of you? Just come as you are.

If you have not yet attended a Welcome! Christ Renews weekend or have previously attended at another parish, we invite you to join us on our next retreat weekends. If you have attended a previous CRHP weekend at IHM but it has been many years, we invite you to attend again, to refresh your experience and renew again your relationship with Christ. Book Sharing Offered by the Sisters of Charity Spirituality Center on three Tuesdays: Sept. 17, Oct. 15 & Nov. 19 from either 1-2:30PM or 6:30-8PM. The book we will be using is Wrestling with God: Finding Hope and Meaning in our Daily Struggles by Ronald Rolheiser. In this book, Ronald Rolheiser offers a steady and inspiring voice to help us avow and understand our faith in a world where nothing seems solid or permanent. Drawing from his own life experience, as well as a storehouse of literary, psychological, and theological insights, the beloved author of Sacred Fire examines the fears and doubts that challenge us. It is in these struggles to find meaning, that Rolheiser lays out a path for faith in a world struggling to find faith, but perhaps more important, he helps us find our own rhythm within which to walk that path. The program will be held at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse, 5900 Delhi Road. Free will offering. REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Please contact the Spirituality Center 513-347-5449 or [email protected] for additional information.

Gathered and Sent In the life of the Church, the community is “gathered” for worship, word and Eucharist and is “sent” to spread the Gospel message. Included is a short reflection on these topics to remind us of the Dismissal Rite announced by the Deacon at the end of the Mass. In a metaphorical sense think of “Gathered and Sent” as the breath (inhale and exhale) of the Spirit of Christ living in the Church.

GatheredCome to me, come to us, you who are burdened. Come to the work, come to the meal. (740 Gather Hymnal)

SentGo in peaceTurn from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it. (Psalm 34:14)

The Spirituality of Aging

There are spiritual tasks in later life, attitudes and habits that enhance meaning and purpose. We may be called to forgive, to soften our judgments, to adjust to cultural changes, accept limitations or find reasons to hope. If you are between the ages of 60 and 95, come consider the options we all have to make this period of our lives a blessing and a promise.

Marie and Brennan Hill have been facilitating groups on this topic. Social Action Commission invites you to join us for our fall social forum as we celebrate the life and dignity of the human person.

Wednesday, October 92-4 p.m., St. Matthew Welcome Center

If you have any questions, please contact Sue Keefe, [email protected].
