It's Hard to Believe, Isn't it?

Beware. What you are about to read will probably numb your brain. Perhaps you read the

article in Sunday's Tulsa World by Janet Pearson and Julie DelCour. It reported the staggering sta-

tistics on hunger in Oklahoma.

According to their research, we are the fourth most "food insecure state" in the U.S. Just

about the bottom of the barrel. One in five of our children go to bed hungry at night. In Tulsa

County, 36,680 children don't have enough to eat. 80 percent of the students in Tulsa Public

Schools are eligible for free or reduced meal programs. Food programs are being inundated

with hungry families and elderly Oklahomans, who have to chose: food or electricity.

That's Tulsa and Oklahoma! We've seen pictures of starving children in the Third World with

ribs protruding through their skin until we quickly look the other way. What can we do? They are

too far away for us to make any difference.

But when the Hunger Bird comes to roost on our door step ... what can you do? There IS

something you can do right now! You can decide to join Tulsa's CROP Hunger Walk, October 7,

at 2 p.m. We will step off from Boston Avenue United Methodist Church. Sign up at Bethany next

Sunday.

Or, you can help support one of our walkers from Bethany. Click on this link:

http://www.churchworldservice.org/goto/bethanyCROP. It will take you to a page where you

can donate right now, before you forget.

Twenty-five percent of the money we raise will stay in Tulsa to relieve hunger pangs. The

rest will support a worldwide effort to end hunger.

When God confronted him, Cain wondered aloud: "Am I my brother's

keeper?" The answer, of course, is: "You bet I am, and so are we all!"

An Early Middle East Peace

Genesis 26:6-33

There were few things more precious in ancient Palestine

than water. As Isaac was wandering through the land to find

a place to settle, he dug many wells to water his livestock and

sustain his family. But the Philistines who lived in the land kept

filling in the wells. Trouble ensued, but peace was found.

That's the story our Bible Study class will explore, Sunday,

at 9:30. Join us and see how Isaac and Abimelech did it.
